    I've watched this vid 20 times with 100 pauses. I bought the 4+1 kit. I assembled it & plugged it in. It worked like gangbusters. I'm using all 5 cobs spread to 12.5in on center. The 4 edges are cantilevered out slightly & should bounce off the 3x3 tent walls; like I saw them do in another of your excellent PAR reader viddies with the light mover rig. We'll see how that evens things out. I sure appreciate your content, Sir. Thanks for the forum posts also. Cheers

      Was trying to figure out how to configure 8 COBS per 4' x 4' spacing and then I had an idea... Three strips of (4) COBS more evenly distributes light.. 12 COB setup likely not too overboard either if you were to crank em down but maybe too much??.. How is your 12.5" spread working out?? That spacing would allow me to stick with my potential 9 COB layout.. You getting good par readings with that spacing??

    • @Panurgent
      @Panurgent 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your question, Atrociteeshirts. I couldn't be happier with the spacing. I don't have a meter, so I was going off of Growmau5's figures. Six months later I've had a chance to adjust the cantilevers & take notes & pull a harvest of good size satisfying buds. I would build it the same way if I had to do it all over again. Cheers!

      Hey excellent!! Been pondering an adjustable system down the road.. Not something like a track system.. just something that would allow some adjustment and expansion of maybe 3-5 inches per cob to accomodate some experimentation.. Glad everything is working well for ya brotha!!

    It looks as if two of these assemblies with the longer aluminum and cobs spread out in a 4' x 8' tent with reflective walls would be a kick-ass setup. Great work and can't wait for the next video.

    Growmau5: Awesome video! I built this. 1/16" stock is just fine. You need to take some leftover stock and put gussets ( 4 each ) 1 in each corner where the center light and materials join. I would recommend that even if you build it out of 1/8" stock. Once you cut the slots, there is no more support for the crossed piece. Love your videos!!

    I'm a total 100% newb and i've been seriously thinking about doing a grow now for about a year. I was going to go with a 400w hps in a 3x3 until i stumbled onto your channel. I knew diy led was a really good way to go, but never would have thought of attempting it myself without you walking me through every step on this channel. I really appreciate that, and i think that i am going to be happy that i went this way when i get my first power bill. I am trying really hard to stick to a budget. I was only going to drop $150 on the hps, i realize that now i have to stretch that a bit, but i would still like to keep the initial investment as low as possible. It seems like something that would be easy to upgrade once i had a few successful grows under my belt. One area that i think i may be able to trim off a few bucks is on the chip. Is there any generic or non cree brand chip that i could plug into this system with similar results? I am also interested in what kind of setup i would need to run in cxa2530 or cxa2540 to obtain similar results to this 200w 5 cxb3070 set up. My last concern is with color temp. The cree cobs seem to cost way more in 3500k than other color temps. What kind of dropoff in results might i see from using a 3000k or 4000k vs a 3500k?

  • @chuckgreen330ify

    Something to put into your calculations would be the intensity of the light to depth of plant penetration. I believe LED lights have very weak light penetration power to penetrate a canopy thicker than 12'''-18'' and they have to be very close to the plant roughly 6-12'' to get the most out of them. If they are not spaced perfectly you will get hot spots and other areas with very little light. I have a great idea to try with LEDs to help fix this problem I just dont have the money right now to try it myself, hit me up if you are interested.

    I know it's old and probably you won't answer but for a 2.6 x 2.6 (80 x 80cm) grow tent with a similar 5 COB setup, what do you think about making the bars about 27" long? The heat dissipators are huge too!
    Thanks again!

    Hey...I'd like to mount the driver on the angle rather than remotely. I've got a 30" x 30" personal grow box I'm building and I was going to leave about an inch of space between the fixture and the walls of the box so 29" long. Do you think that would be possible off the top of your head? I like the 5 light fixture. What is the HID equivalent of this configuration? Which cobs would be best for veg and flower? Thanks!

  • @MrBoxcarfan97

    Hey brother! Given your experience with these COBSs, would you object to a 9 COB on a mover over a 4x4 area. Basically a slightly rectangle shaped fixture. Gonna have some cash on hand here pretty soon!

    Yo Growmau, Do you get a advantage if using a lens vs a reflector? I would like to see a side by side lumens test at same drive current. Are there other advantages other than protecting the cob? Do you need a larger heatsink due to the lens retaining heat inside at the cob? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

    do you think that 6 cob in 2 rows of three would be effective in a 4'x4' and would it be comparable to a 600w HPS? I as because there are companies selling similar arrangements but with older type cobs. what would be the main difference/s between cxb3070 and cxb3590 cobs? Also I have noticed some supplement with other diodes like far red/blue and IR diodes. is that actually necessary? thanks and top notch channel btw

    Would it be better to sacrifice some efficiency and use higher drive currents to increase photons. COBs are much cheaper now and you really do not need 50,000 hours at the cost of fewer photons.

  • @jamieright4801

    Why do you wire them in series? This divides the voltage by 5? Why not in parallel? So you get a driver at 36v that gives 600w and put a bunch of cobs on for example the Cree if you wanted to run them at 100w you could put 6 on one driver as when you wire in parallel you divide the watts.

    • @xnukutuc
      @xnukutuc 4 года назад

      use a combo of 200-300w led and 70w hid, use white leds or a color combo, dont use just purple, plants like the whole light spectrum, led is very efficient, but hid is very good for plant because of the far reds and ir, but white leds also output IR so you are fine with plain cold white leds, also warm white is better for flowering stage, for veg cold white is best
      you can use only 400w led cob chips, if you buy a cheap grow led (chinese) please please see the reviews because they tend to show higher power in the description than it really is

      great video M5 on your season 3 , you used far red leds, i just got my 4ft deep red led bars from BML. Can you tell me whats the difference between far red like yours and deep red is the one BML recomended for me? and also do the reds have to be on same time as the 3590 or just few hours of the flip cycle?
      Basically my set up consist of 12 cxb3590 one meanwell HLG 240h-c1750b per four cobs and 2 deep red BML led bar gonna be sitting between each of the cbx bar in a 4x4 space. The whole room is set up like that in a total 10x40 space.its been a couple months following ur page and its been a great help.
      thanks for all your help and knowledge.
      Also i remember you email me aout my power consumption with this set up in a 4x4 space,is their another setup config that can be used to save on power consumption but wont degrade lumens to much and will save me on power consumption?
      Thanks bro

      Led life is determined by several factors, drive current, temperature etc. These kits are design to operate at 50 watts, well below their specifications of 130 watts so 100000 hours is totally reasonable under these operating conditions

    "+Josh MedLogics hmmm, same price as a mars, not really, that is a cheap light putting out maybe 1.7 µmol/J (or PAR per watt). these cxb3590 are putting out 2.7 µmol/J of plant usable photons. so you gotta spend the bux to get the efficiency. but 4 or 5 cobs in your space mounted in a S config, or staggered configuration would work quite nicely."
    Hi growmau5, at the first tanx for your videos, you re on busines with his kind of light but also help a lot diy grower...and thay s sound really generous from you!! Now, why did you raccomand an "s"configuration? Should not good a "cross" ike in this video? Finally i saw your test (pin Vs fim heatsink)...pin heatsin seem good, i know the datasheet and they are designed for low W light, less than 50w as you know but seem really good, 50 celsious is an unbelivelable performance! How do you think would be with a 1050mA cob VS an artic alpine cpu with fan? Many many thanx!! One love.

      +haribo stinky (Mr stink) The drivers accept anywhere from 110-240V, the kit is universal, you just have to get your country's plug-end.

    Could you use one of those "driverless cob led" which actually have the drivers integrated?
    Can they be wired in series just the same?

    • @GrowMau5
      @GrowMau5  6 лет назад

      Ad A If the driver was integrated and powered by standard AC wall power, then it essentially becomes like a desk lamp. If you had 4 desk lamps in your office, would you wire them in series before plugging them into your wall?
