Hard to believe someone would take a light with a spectrum that has set multiple world records for the highest yield on a single cannabis plant, and then replace that spectrum with a generic white COB LED that puts out 1/3 the PAR per watt and runs over 100 degrees hotter. Congrats on taking a great product and making it junk.

Hey Growmau5! Glad you're back on YT!! Very usefull video for those who didn't have the chance to meet you a month before cxb3590 was released 😉😁! This kind of light changed the way I grow! I remember asking you about how to spread my COB the best way then asking you if hundreds of diodes wouldn't be better but it was too many soldering at this time! Now it is different so I don't know what to do for my next DIY built!??? What is the best DIY led now? Is it always Cree cxb3590? Is Cree will release CXC??? What would you build today!??
Have a lifted one and lots of good vibes from France

Martin Gailhofer hi! Thanks! You talk about the Samsung I guess! It is pcb with 288 small mid power led? How many watt is this ? How many mA? And the size of the pcb!? I saw 220lm/w!!! Wow my 180lm/w seem poor in comparison! I guess it is 0.2w diodes so 288x0.2 = 56w??? If I am correct and if i can add a potentiometer I will use one over each square meter! I saw it for 43 €! 144€ for 2 with the driver and everything else is it sound fair?
Have a lifted one and lots of good vibes from France growers!

Home Grow Homie its not really dangerous if you know what you're doing on the dc side.
For folks with little knowledge take the safe approach and use clips 👍

    • @GrowMau5
      @GrowMau5  6 лет назад +16

Jim is right, for the un-initiated , aligator clips or even electrical tape is recommended. But its the current that kills you. Think of a tazzer its 20-50,000 volts but only 2-5 milliamps. Worst case, you poop your pants and pass out.
      But, safety first.

If your not grounded or touching the return you are safe. The key is not the voltage but the current and the current needs to have a path through you before you will be hurt.
Search for a video if repairing high voltage lines, they use helicopters and connect directly to the power line.

Dude... the dangerous side when it's unplugged is not the AC side... it's the DC side with that fukken HUGE capacitor. If what you said was correct, over 800 V DC voltage at over 0.1 amps that cap will blow your heart into next week. That kind of amperage and voltage means you have little to no resistance in your skin over that capacitor... You really should be discharging it before messing around... Don't make a connection like that with your multimeter and the neutral while it's running...

I have an old fixture that houses a single cob. I opened it up and put the meter on it.
95v dc output from the driver.
    .47 amps
Verified with a kilowatt that it is pulling 45 watts with the active cooling unplugged
Active cooling pulls an additional 1.1 watt
What is the best single Cob I can put in this fixture that will be compatible with the unmarked driver I have?
    I want to run a cree cxa3590 72 volt 3500k or a free cxa3070 3500k
Please make a recommendation on an efficient cob that will work with my current driver if the two listed above will not work. Preferably 3500k
    Thank you!

hello...would I regret taking the reflectors off my LED light? (the plastic cone strips on the bottom of the light base) does it help the LED at all? will humidity damage the insides if I remove it? the led strip seems to be coated. Also the LEDs (96x2) doesnt seem to have a heatsink on the back...just a loud fan inside, should I set heatsinks? do you have recommendations to replace fans for quieter ones? (this is 12v x 0.15a apparently) or do you have tips to silence cheap fans maybe... any help would be great

Growmau5 buddy, you probably won't read this but I need your help. Im concerned. I have a led light, I won't say the brand but it has 6 panels and 6 cobs. The panels are filled with smaller red and blue LEDs. It's white and rectangular. Sold by a popular RUclipsr. When I turned it on the other day One of the color led panels died. It's now making a clicking noise. It's not the fans. My question is if I need to be concerned with continuing to use the light in its current condition?

Hello, i have an issue with my grow light,
I have a 480 2100B meanwell driver with dimmer knob and when i turn it past halfway it started to flash on and off,
So i took the dimmer off to check if that was problem and the light did not come back on but just flashed only,
So i put the dimmer back on it so i could at least us some light at the moment,
Any help will be much appreciated thanks very much.
I have it on 15amp wall plugin alone, and it did not do this until like the second day it came on with timer and as fine also at that point but about an hour later it started flashing above half power?

I'm wanting to mod my burned out leds with quad/triple/double or even single 5w diodes. I want them amped up though. I need a little guidance on power supply units. I have all kinds of power supplies for 3d printers, they appear to be the same ones but its hard to tell. The power supplies would have to be quite large and it looks like it goes from these adapter looking ones into 3d printer looking ones when you get higher power.

there's two drivers one labeled A other is B - both go to the board and both go one fan each
the A says DC 55v - 86v, .67-.69A (95-100v max i think) , the B says DC 150-190v, (201v max i think) 12v-.3A -- why were they both soldered to the board? And which can I use for the cob hack, and the other just for the fans -- very much an electrical noob - please help me bud

hey guys I have a sol 9 series from the led company u did a remodel on this penetrator. just curious what your thoughts were about there sol chips they have in there new generation series. btw hydro grow led sucks don't buy there lights , there customer service is shit and they may decide not to refund u. btw this video is super helpful an I guess my main question is I have like three chips go out in the 9 light fixture wondering if its a driver issue or a chip issue. I'm gonna get this baby apart and run the multi meter through it to see if I have a driver out or if the chips went bad. any thoughts on the sol 9 series chips should I keep them or use cree??? could I just rewire with less lights on board???? thanks again for making this video and bringing useful information to the people.

I'm looking to build a 4 LED setup into a high bay reflective hood (16 inches in depth). Been looking around at different LEDs on the web and amazon then came across this video. Broadened my view on these newer chips (I build my own first LED grow light about 4 years ago with 10W red/blue chips). It worked but the chips started flashing; 'Im assuming due to heat or just low quality chips. This application is for a 4 x 4 grow tent.
I also considered 60 or 10 degree lenses for better light penetrating, but settled on the metal reflector instead ($25 out the door on walmart website) and want to use 4 x 100W chips. I'm constantly going to the drawing board to find a good way to get good light penetration from a single light source/focal point.
    I enjoyed this video!

I did for once when I bought it did buy the insurance offered thankfully i did they paid me back in full less taxes so I still came out okay but I won't ever buy another cob but would build one because of growmau videos if I am doing well enough health wise that is i am losing the use ok my right hand due to arthritis so doubtful that will ever happen having my eighty second surgery the 30th my personal feelings if you don't ever build the education is priceless THANKS GROW

hey Mouse i have a technical question. Is it possible to solder leds that have varying voltages to the same PCB board? I was looking at the CREE xp-g3 specs and i noticed the reds function at a lower voltage. would that be a problem when soldering the reds to the same board as the whites and blues?

Hey how about adding some thermal grease to the contact surfaces? some regular PC grease (I think everybody should have some at home) should help getting your chip temps down even further. Oh and since we're at it, a CRI of 80 does not seem to be very good in emulating sunlight. Is there an improvement to be had over a CRI 80 LED, if I was using a like CRI 98 LED chip?

Hey I'm having a problem with my meizhi 600w LED light for some reason the veg lights on one side of the light stopped working the flowering lights are still working on both sides but for some reason the vegetative lights are not do you know of any quick reasons why this would happen

    • @GrowMau5

Sounds like one of the led drivers inside the light has gone bad, or a connection is loose. Your best bet to figure it out is: get a $7 ,red, harbor freight multimeter and check the DC output of each driver (as demonstrated in this video). Cheers & good luck .

@@GrowMau5 it's weird because this light has four boards two of the boards are working perfectly and two of the boards are only working with the flower lights not the veg lights I would figure if a driver would be bad either none of the veg lights would work at all or something like that if that makes any sense to you I do have this light opened up and I don't see any bad connections I just don't have the money to buy another LED light and I'm in the middle of a flower run right now

@@GrowMau5 hey I got a question again when I took the LED light apart one of the black wires ground wires coming out of a driver seemed loose may be pulled out could that of burned out all the veg lights on that side because all the drivers seem to work I've swapped and back and forth and made him run different stuff for the drivers are all working it's just the veg lights on those two boards by that ground wire backing out could have burned out all those veg lights on that side because the flower bulbs on that side still work with those run off a different driver please let me know

Hi. I'm hacking some import led I was able to fit some cxb3590 replacing led clusters just like you did on this video, tho my optics wasn't anywhere near as sellable as yours, I first learned how leds works watching your videos, great content as usual.
I was left with some old epistar pcbs, I now I wonder how are these led joint into the pcb? are they soldered? glued? I'm asking you this because I would love to replace the burned diodes (1 - 2 diodes per cluster) in order to use them in other array. I have limited budget so I hate the idea of having 4 leds clusters, with 12-14 working leds laying there as a paperholder. Hope you could help me with this. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Greetings from Chile.

    Instead of buying it in
I run 5 50w cob leds that are water cooled so i can run the heat out of the room while i have 2 40w spot lights
I have checked alot of lights and i just build my own and buy reflectors and parts seperate
If i need an air cooled light i add a old cpu cooler as there ment for 100w of disapastion easily so 2 50 w cobs even over drivern at 120w is a no big sweat

As for IR in a grow light, this is not needed and at best will only burn the leaves. IR is also very dangerous around the human eye.
It is much safer for adults, children and press if IR is not in a grow light

Glad I came across this video. I have a couple of these and they burned out a couple of months out of warranty. Was looking for a replacement module and this is so much more affordable. Wish I had a 3D printer! Could ou reinstall the lens or would the COB get to hot?

Great video I'm I about to do something similar. To first get a heat zink then a driver then a fan. After that I will search for the Led chip. The problem with the led chip is that there are so many various models and generations so it is difficult to decide what led chip to go for. I would have probably one full spectrum 100w led chip/plant and use one unit per plant so the distance to the plant and position of the light can be dialed in more accurate then if a bigger unit is trying to cover a few plants.

ive built my own light with a similar design to this. i used 6 3500K cobs and 2 monochromatic cobs to "boost" the spectrum. i can still see my plants in true color but they also get that extra blue and red that this "full spectrum" cobs offer.
