- In this adventure I take on the Deeside Trail, one of Scotland's more technical bikepacking routes with singletrack and MTB trails throughout. Starting from Banchory and doing a figure out eight through the Cairngorms, the route takes in mountain biking trails at Aboyne, Muir of Dinnet and Tarland, not to mention some amazing technical descents through Ballater and Braemar.
I chose a short travel xc bike for this bikepacking trip and needed the suspension to soak up the hits! I chose not to use a seat pack so I could get full use out my dropper post and enjoy the descents. Turned out a wise choice!

This is not an easy route. We were out in the remote mountains pedalling for several hours at a time in bad weather with no escape route. Definitely one to be prepared for all conditions - and this was in summer! There are plenty good mountain bike trails and we adjusted the route to take in a couple of extra trails. If you have more time too you could easily link in Ballater's Heartbreak Ridge which in my opinion is one of the best trails in the area!
If you enjoy mountain biking and bikepacking then you'll love this route.

Some shift Laura!! Well done - fantastic!!👊
thanks it was a tough old route! Some good trails to keep the stoke up!
It was good to see a lot of my old haunts as I grew up in Tarland fifty plus years ago and as a boy cycled all over on my road bike from Aberdeen to Balmoral with a couple of friends but have always hankered to get out into the wilderness on a bike and explore some of the tracks I see travelling back to Deeside from the Central Belt that meander into the hills. I now have the perfect tool my eMTB but age is not on my side but not done yet I hope. I never really remember the Midge growing up that was until I moved to Kintyre and then on to The Isle of Lewis where they are bred differently so I felt your pain with the bites as they always seem to go for my mouth also and anywhere else that is exposed.
Lovely place to grow up. Thanks for sharing! Hopefully with the eMTB you can explore some of those routes! I'll definitely be doing some more up that way. Spectacular riding and views to match. Haha I can imagine the midgies are brutal there - they do say the west is on another level for them!
Love your awesome videos, subscribe
Thank you! Glad you enjoy them!
Well Done Laura Loved the video looks hard going.
Thanks! Yeah it was tougher than I expected!
I was going to try to nail this in one day. Summer Puffer training 😂.
Haha good luck 🤣
Looks like a great few days, except for the midge anyway! I wouldn't have made it through the night!
Haha yeah it was super but I do want to forget that night 🤣
Excellent video but oh my word those bites looked rough.
Thanks! Worst night of the year 😂
Had to turn the sound down. Was getting worried the neighbours would think I'm watching a different type of content 😅
🤣
