Thanks Ruth!🙂 any great spots I missed that I should visit next time? I was surprised how clean the bothy was as I’d heard it was a mess, but looked recently cleaned, although there was a huge container of rubbish in the kitchen area under the table.
@@StephenJReid That's great! It's a shame that people leave rubbish behind as it will attract vermin. The raider's road is nice and the otter pool is a nice place for swimming but midge central this time of year. My favourite area in the Galloway Forest Park is Loch Trool and the hike up the Merrick! Your drone footage was incredible, the colours look amazing this time of year!
Great video Stephen, I grew up near there, spent a lot of time in those hills, The Mountain Bothy Association have done a great job sprucing up White Laggan, positively palatial now compared to what it was 30 odd years back. There was another campsite about half way between the Glentrool site and Bruce's Stone called Caldons, I remember driving round the site looking for a pitch, whilst wondering why every camper was wearing a towel on their head ha ha! Soon found out when I opened the car door. Site sadly closed some years back. You can't beat walking in the Galloway Hills, it is one of the few places left in the country where you can spend a whole day and not see another soul. And there are a few bothys dotted around, Tunskeen, Culsharg and Backhill o Bush, there was an interesting wooden wigwam at one stage too, but some oaf burnt it down. I rode up to visit my parents a couple of days before you were there, in one sitting from Leicestershire, and just north of Dalry they had chipped the road a couple of hours before I got there, chipping about 2 inches deep, like cycling through porridge. On the plus side, a pine marten popped out of the woods and stood staring at me giving me an excuse to stop. There are about 25 crashed planes up there too, lots of bits left scattered around, two of which are on those hills the other side of Clatterinshaws. At least you got a couple of days of really nice weather, that wet day I think was one of my rest days round the old folks house. Keep them coming, all the best Pal, Andy
Brilliant video and frankly not enough of these videos looking at ETouring. I purchased an E-bike a few months ago from canyon - the SuV version. The intent was for it to carry me and the load for longer distances than I can get with my non- E tourer. I think the e-touring is definitely a new and brilliant thing and with the right fitness. 100 plus miles per day are really achievable. I’ve now bought a second battery. Very costly, but having 2 750 batteries are going to amount to longer days. Please do some more of these vids - they are really excellent and have a great mixture of geekery and exploration in equal measure Nice one 👍
Lovely area, i did my first ever wild camp on a bikepacking trip there. Left my car at Glentrool campsite and camped there after my little adventure. ❤

Super. I’ve done that route so many times from Belfast on the ferry. 3 days about 460km and usually head up and do Arran and home via the mountains above glentrool. Those roads are great. Consider a gravel bike instead of a MTB next time and it’s a lot nicer transitioning between roads and gravel.
It's a great route! Can't believe I'd dismissed Galloway as being a bit boring! I'm not bike fit enough to do longer distance currently. Back in the 1980's, a Swedish car manufacturer who will remain anonymous, introduced a car with an alarm system which and if it were a case that the car thief wasn't deterred by all alarms blazing, whoever was still at the wheel attempting to steal the vehicle, a huge bolt of around 20,000v would be delivered by ignition coil through the car seat. It was very effective. How about we patent that for the seat of a bike? Better still, would it work on midges?
Just discovered your channel. Really liking it. Can you tell me what make the blue pannier is? Looks really useful to be able to turn it into a backpack.

Thanks Thomas! Yeah I think I’ll do a follow up video at some point about my bikepacking kit. I definitely prefer panniers to saddlebags though as they are much easier to get in and out of and one of mine converts to a backpack. Fozclaz stuff is decent for good price, I had their trekking tent for a while. Some tents are specifically designed for bikepacking with a short pack size. But the only other tent I’ve used for bikepacking is the terranova laser compact 1. But it’s expensive.
What parts? my first time there so I probably didn't notice. Although it looks like its mostly a non-native commercial plantation anyway, dead under the trees
STEVEN you brighten up my life , loved the e-bike and the the way you edit your videos is great. Now that's enough of stroking your ego , but just wanted to know how much does that bike cost please and do you think it would be good idea to get another battery , not knowing anything about e-bikes at all , and yes I know you going to say it all depends on what your going to do, in other words how much is a battery or should I Go and look myself. Just that you have made up my mind to get a E-bike.and some camping. Thanks very much for all your work help and fun.ALAN, ⛺🍻💯👍
Hi Alan. That bike costs about £2300 so it's a quality bike but not as expensive as some really high end E-bikes. I have a friend who bought one after seeing mine and he loves it, it fits a gap in the market between proper mountain bikes and road bikes, you can do anything with this bike. I love it. I personally wouldn't touch a lot of the cheaper Chinese brands that you see being advertised and I've turned down loads of offers from them. Asides from differences in quality of components, this is significantly lighter (17kg) compared to a lot of cheap E-bikes with this kind of real range. Was offered a bike recently that weighs over 30kg! A lot of brands exaggerate the range capabilities of the bike as well. I actually bought one of Cairns other e-bikes myself before contacting them about working with them. Wanted to test for myself first. Also this is a UK brand so all customer service handled in UK. Spare batteries are expensive, £600 for the same capacity that this comes with. but that would extend my range to about 120miles. I am thinking about it for longer trips or for multi-day if I wouldn't have access to somewhere to charge. I think most people probably don't need a spare battery. Especially if you don't cycle regularly as even with the electrical assist, over 30miles and most people will be getting uncomfortable just sitting on the bike.
@@StephenJReid wow £600 lots of money. Thanks for getting back to me. I’m saving my pennies from today. Thanks again for your great entertainment and one day soon I’ll be able to show people me on a bike. And camping. They won’t believe it. So Will keep it a secret just for us at the moment. Take care of yourself and see you soon Alan 💯👍
well there plenty of ebikes out there look into the features some new ones have options for ad d on battery so like new bosch smart have 750 power but also smaller 250 extra add on , if look at bike grants like well scotland transport had likes 4000 limit that was 4 years ago and can pay over years no fees , i got cube bike 4 years ago paid 63 pounds a month it suited me ok ,..........you have Shimano motor, SRAM Powertrain, bosch motor ,Brose motor, Yamaha many more ,alo have non branded ,.......also some very basic computers to see bike details , so best option go to few bike shops try out see what want weight or more battery or small battery but buy spares ,so my option see what extras add ons can get for that bike

@@StephenJReid No not camping , driven past Clattering Shaws on way to sheep Sale at Newton Stewart , I just live in Southern Uplands but the few chances I get I tend to head North to wild camp , liking the look of your bike too !
Bike adds about £20 to the price but yeah would be nicer if the total cost was around £75. Although if I drove it costs £400 and fuel on top of that. So it’s cheap by comparison.
I have considered this, but it's another gadget that I don't really need. I Have a sports watch that has maps and tracking and also my phone that I could use Koomot with. I do a lot of different activities.
It brought me the most quiet roads actually. I checked the routes it suggested before heading out. When I ended up on busy routes that was my choosing.
104 pounds for fair crossing dam .. last time took that it was 29 pounds with the bus all the way to London .. dam shocking price i dont miss Northern Ireland lol
were you really expecting me to? It's a hard topic to represent with a thumbnail, this was my best idea. thought it would be obvious I'm not cycling on water. Maybe I'll add a ferry to the thumbnail
Regardless of animals or not, we still need a lot of farmland. But it would be nice to see a lot more native trees. It’s much worse in Ireland. Scotland is 18% forest/woodland, Ireland is 11%. Similar sized country and population. Native woodland is even worse, Scotland it’s 4%, Ireland 1%

If you follow me on Strava you’ll find the route. If I remember I”ll try and link the GPX in description but I’m behind on other edits atm.
@@StephenJReid perfect Stephen. Followed and see the route on Strava there - nearly identical to your route from Glentrool to New Galloway. Brilliant. I’ve looked at those gravel trails before now I have to do them 😂
Back in the 1980's, a Swedish car manufacturer who will remain anonymous, introduced a car with an alarm system which and if it were a case that the car thief wasn't deterred by all alarms blazing, whoever was still at the wheel attempting to steal the vehicle, a huge bolt of around 20,000v would be delivered by ignition coil through the car seat. It was very effective. How about we patent that for the seat of a bike? Better still, would it work on midges?
😂 turn the bike into a massive fly/thief zapper
Great video Stephen and very inspirational. However can you tell me the make of pannier rack for your Cairn Brave?
Thanks! 🙂 It’s an Ortlieb Quick Rack
Just discovered your channel. Really liking it. Can you tell me what make the blue pannier is? Looks really useful to be able to turn it into a backpack.
Thanks Iain! It’s a 26lr Ortlieb vario bag. Expensive but brilliant
Great adventure! Very fun to watch. The bike looks nice too. Can you get a spare/replacement battery from that company?
Thanks! Yeah it’s a Shimano steps system so you can buy different capacity spare/replacements batteries if desired
@@StephenJReid Great! Thanks!
that first bit of road off the ferry, is on route to my parents, and everytime i drive on it, im like, would i bollox ride a bike on this >< !!
Thankfully it’s only for 3miles but it’s not a fun road
Very good indeed, well done.
Thanks🙂
More videos like this please Steven 😅
okey dokey
another tribalistic fantastic video thanks , as there not many uk ebike videos so your part of that list great ,..and not bad weather and your kit loos good , need do video of all that you took and if used all ,...hoping your now do more ebike .. i trying decided what want as my first bikepacking so far got rockbros pannier set of ebay for 40 pounds i like them as they have front opton to stuff extra stuff on outside so my idea is to get like front fork rack that can could be attached to the outside rockbros pannier as dry bags can be squashed down but keeps stuff dry ,....am still trying find what tent with likes of 250 mark ,......FORCLAZ Trekking dome tent - 2-p - MT900 ,its 220 and looks nice space and like that it has attached vestibule,....if have any other ideas , for any other tents that go well with bike tour that you think be good to start with any help .....anyway looking forward to mor bike stuff and your final kit list for this video
Awesome video ! May I ask for info on that alarm or is it specific on that bike ?
Works with any bike: geni.us/TLebf2
all i can say is that the logging practice has devastated the landscape round there
What parts? my first time there so I probably didn't notice.
Loving your vids. Just one very very small criticism. Dalry. Pronounced dalrye. Not dalray. No one is perfect, im sure i pronounced a few Irish placenames wrong in my time while i was living in NI. Keep up the great vids. 😊
so funny 🤣
Great video!
Haha I also do the same with crisp packet! 😂 Great video Stephen! 🙌🏼.
It always confuses people when I hand them the finished triangle 😂
Brilliant video !
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 ever been to Galloway?
@@StephenJReid No not camping , driven past Clattering Shaws on way to sheep Sale at Newton Stewart , I just live in Southern Uplands but the few chances I get I tend to head North to wild camp , liking the look of your bike too !
❤❤it a fantastic trip 😊
Yup! Thanks 🙂
Brilliant , but jeez the ferry is expensive. Not exactly encouraging travel by bike! All the rest was totally encouraging a bike adventure. Well done!
Bike adds about £20 to the price but yeah would be nicer if the total cost was around £75. Although if I drove it costs £400 and fuel on top of that. So it’s cheap by comparison.
Love your videos always of such high quality, the only thing I found that worked for Midges was the wife, they attacked her and left me alone.
😂😂
What cameras where you using
Did you ever think about a second battery for your bike?
Yes, but it’s £600 so I might wait a while 😬
@@StephenJReid understand that.
I‘m mainly here for your humour 🌚
🤪🤪🤪
Great video, very well done :)
Thanks Steve!
Why don't you get Garmin gps for Ur bike .
I have considered this, but it's another gadget that I don't really need. I Have a sports watch that has maps and tracking and also my phone that I could use Koomot with. I do a lot of different activities.
Took a while for me to realise you didn’t put your bike “into beast mode” at intersections…😂
I’m going to call it that from now on 😂
large fleshy surface 😂. The rest of the video was great but these words will forever be stuck in my mind 😂😂😂😂
😂
Epic ❤
Thanks!
The problems with Google maps it's taken u around the houses and main roads u don't want that...
It brought me the most quiet roads actually. I checked the routes it suggested before heading out. When I ended up on busy routes that was my choosing.
absolutely epic.... lol
Thanks Paul 😁
Looks like a great vid apart from the midges
Thanks!
First cyclist who hasn’t broken into a sweat
Ha sweating is optional with an e-bike but I sweated A LOT during this. You don’t get big miles on an ebike without putting in effort
love to go camping with you sometime you would be good crack lol
Thanks! I’m no fun when I’m filming though, I get tunnel focus 🙈
@@StephenJReid i don't mind mate i do amateur photography im from banbridge
104 pounds for fair crossing dam .. last time took that it was 29 pounds with the bus all the way to London .. dam shocking price i dont miss Northern Ireland lol
The ridiculous thing is that I can get a bus from Belfast to Glasgow including ferry and bike for £86 all included.
@@StephenJReid yeah there got be cheaper way fly lol
@@StephenJReid I flew from Vietnam to Perth Australia with bike for 98$ last year lol
"Large fleshy surface"......🤭
misleading thumbnail, you didn't cycle on the sea.
were you really expecting me to? It's a hard topic to represent with a thumbnail, this was my best idea. thought it would be obvious I'm not cycling on water. Maybe I'll add a ferry to the thumbnail
@@StephenJReid maybe lol ruclips.net/video/6QVpJDvNwJY/видео.html
O dear me! 🙄
Really! One of the best outdoor youtubers out there and you crit for that. Please see sunshine on this day, and not the mire
😂
104 Pound sterling equals 132.26 United States Dollar (on 2024-06-19)
Is that a reasonable cost in the US for a ferry trip like this?
Where’s the rest of the WHW videos, come on you !!!
Check the community tab on his channel. He explained it there 😉
Left the footage in Scotland so had to cycle over to pick it up 😜
Next WHW video hopefully this weekend!
I always find farmland so boring. Nothing but animals for slaughter. We need reforestation
