    I'm an American and a big PH fan. I know that Peter views everything thru a political lens and to an extent I do as well. However I do take exception when he says America is not and never was our friend. That's simply not true. Speaking for the average American in the 20th century we always felt a close bond with Brits. We made fun of you sure..you talk funny but we love how it sounds..you drive on the wrong side of the road...but when an American kids around with someone they do it because he likes you and respects you. Sure we had our differences in the 18th century but I suspect there were many middle class brits living at that time that wished they too could be so bold as to tell George III to stuff it ..and be allowed to enjoy the fruits of their labor and be equal in the sight of God.
    No Peter you are wrong there are still lots of people in America that stand by Great Britain even as we watch each of our country's decay. Friends remain friends. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

      That's Peter Hitchens' shtick though. He's very articulate about what he doesn't like - but he'll never come out in favour of anything unless it's 100% 1950s Christian England. I like him and his politics a lot, but he's too unforgiving of the practical realities on the ground, and of natural human flaws. Like his position on the Brexit referendum... doesn't support it because it didn't have a major parliamentary party behind it. Never mind the incredible act of self-determination and democracy that it represented. Journalistically it's pretty smart - because the less you can be pinned down, the less burdened you are, and the more balanced your opinions appear. I have to say when he lays into the Conservative party it makes me laugh- but you would never see an Owen Jones doing the same to the Labour party.

    If we stay in the Single Market and leave the Customs Union as Peter Hitchens suggested this will be deeply disadvantageous to the EU because we will be able to buy goods at the international market value and won't have to buy goods at inflated protected EU prices. They won't go for it.

    I remember watching Hitchens the day after the EU referendum and he had the biggest smile I have ever seen on him. He was talking about free trade and all the great things Brexit would bring and now he is talking about a soft Brexit and talking down British manufactoring which still does exist. He always talks about having a real Conservative party in politics and yet denigrates any party that comes along with true conservative values and policies like the AfD in Germany, who have only been labelled as far-right by the same press that regard anything right of Corbyn as far-right.

    Glad he pointed out what a constitutional disaster the brexit referendum was.
    It was ludicrous to hold a referendum proposing a policy that the vast majority of the 2016 parliament disagreed with.
    It pitted a divided electorate against the legislature - a catastrophe.

    I'm surprised the BBC still invites the great Peter Hitchens on this show. Normally, the interesting, non-PC panellists are avoided i.e. David Starky, Douglas Murray, Digby Jones, Nigel Farage, Katie Hopkins etc... Surely its time Dimbleby retired.

    Hitchens may well be one of the cleverest people to grace this panel. The main reason why i've come up with statement is because he has learn't the art of "IGNORINGDIMBLEBYSCONSTANTINTERRUPTION"...an ancient art form which recognises that Dimbleby doesn't seem to recognise his own over-inflated self importance and lack of understanding of the FACT that this is a Political Discussion Show...and he is a PRESENTER.
    I swear to god Hitchens never actually looks Dimbleby in the eye ONCE!!!!.....nuff said.

    We need debt, only twice since 1692 have we had a balanced budget. Debt is our pensions. So we try to balance the budget to ensure we protect our children, we had debt from our descendants. If we pursue this lunacy we may reduce debt but we leave a crumbling infrastructure and public services so we our children will have to borrow loads to sort it out.

    • @RailwayBobbie
      @RailwayBobbie 7 лет назад +2

      I think you'll find that the UK doesn't produce much to sell so we can never balance the books. All our great industries have gone over the years. Who now talks about this ? No one. Also, without these jobs you have an economy running on low wage jobs. If people have no money to purchase things then it has a huge knock-on effect with shops.

      Basil II, we are not at 90% it's about 50% there is debt on the books that is not debt. 400 billion that the government created is not debt, how can money that is created by oneself be debt to oneself. The whole austerity mantra is a pure evil lie. Private wealth Sat in banks doing nothing is the real dead weight. The richest 1% pay 25% of all tax, that's sickening. If wealth distribution was fairer, maybe us at the lower end would contribute more in tax as we would earn more. We need our government to invest massively in our infrastructure. It will if we do reduce our debt. The Tories go on about burdening our children with debt. Imagine you leave your kids your home, but you have never made improvements, they will have a home but will need thousands to renovate it. Similarly we could leave our children with small national debt, but would have to borrow trillions to repair the crumbling infrastructure we would leave them.

    • @jamesandrew1750
      @jamesandrew1750 7 лет назад +3

      Pro ton the government raises money by borrowing against future tax revenue, it sells gilted bonds to investors like you, me, a business or a pension fund and pays interest on this bond until it is cashed in a predetermined point, ie a 10 year, or 25 year bond. So all the money the government borrows increases their debt and ongoing interest liabilities. Currently at about 70billion a year in interest. The total debt is nearly 2trillion, our GDP is 3 trillion. The only way to avoid bankrupcy is to grow GDP in the long term. Excessive taxes reduce GDP and even tax revenue itself. Excessive government borrowing creates an excess of money supply and results in inflation. Private borrowing doesnt because businesses create goods and services to the value of their loans. This is the conundrum conservatives are in, the voters, generally dont understand economics so vote for the party telling them what they want to hear whist believeing online conspiracy theories about bankers.

    Most of the moral decline Peter Hitchens like to complain about (instant gratification, consumerism, drugs, etc. etc.) , came as a result of unregulated market economy. Yet he is the first one to support deregulation. He thinks the source of this 'moral decline' has to do with secularism, yet the most religious country in the developed world, the US, has these problems even more than more secular societies in the past and the present.

    It always amazes me that when people talk about political parties that are NOT left, they refer to them as "far right"!!! Politics, as we know, comes in all shapes and sizes, as well as political flavours/colours. The fact that any political party is not left, makes them immediately "far" right, is frankly laughable and is born of cliché and "buzzword" chatter.

    I love listening to Peter Hitchens, he is very politically intelligent. I just wish that 99.9 per cent of the British public were just as politically intelligent. Many of whom are posting on here. The British largely are a nation of sheep who believe what they read in the right wing press.
