Thanks very much for posting this Shaun! I first saw this as a Saints fan as a 10 year old watching on the old black and white in the living room and havent seen it since then!

Same for me except I was 13 at the time. I would have been there but for train strike. Went to a thrilling 15-15 draw between the sides at Knowsley Road a few months earlier.
Players may be better athletes nowadays but I would go back to those days any day. I understood the game a lot more and could read it better.
Thanks for the post Shaun. I’ve never seen it since either and amazed at the quality of the picture. Usually ones from that era aren’t that good.

I've been watching league only since 2009, so it's fascinating to me to see how the game used to be played, especially under the four-tackle rule. Thank you for posting these.

It is interesting to see a game under the 4 tackle rule - I think the move to 6 works better, but liked it more when there was a scrum on 6th rather than handover.
I'd be interested to see a game under the unlimited tackle rule

That was my great uncle. Graham Rees. Quickest try scored I’m a challenge cup final. 35 seconds.

Great that he got a winners medal and a try too, Lorca. I remember being quite pessimistic before this game because we were missing hooker Tony Karalius and second row or loose forward Eric Prescott injured but all those forwards earned their medals.

I've been looking for this match for a while. I remember watching this when I was 10yo, and that drop goal from Coselett always stuck in my head. He really had his kicking boots on that day. Incidentally, Geoff Pimblett was my history teacher. Slight off the ball incident at 1:31:37 LOL

Geoff Pimlett was a nice guy too.

    • @desplatt842

Quite surprised watching this again that Coslett actually missed two goals that day. Nevertheless he was man of the match deservedly and is the kicker I would dominate to kick a goal for my life. Whenever it was a close game like this one, he rarely missed more than one kick in a match and generally kicked a couple from the touch line. A great pressure kicker . I can remember us beating Rochdale 35 two and we scored 11 tries and he only kicked one goal but of course it didn’t matter.
I always thought his straight up method was a better method than the round the corner kickers we see nowadays. Yes, they are very good but they are all full time rugby players and have a lot more practice time.

Absolutely loved the Saints v Leeds games in that era. Overall, I would say Leeds won slightly more than us; a particularly bad memory was the play-off final at Wigan in 1975 when we were big favourites and lost 26-11, both props crocked in the first 10 minutes and full back after 20 minutes.
Phil Cookson always used to terrify me. How on earth did he only get three international caps? I suppose there were lots of good second rows around ; George Nicholls, Eric Chisnall and John Mantle just from Saints!

Syd Hynes who played in this 1972 meeting between Leeds and St Helens was the Leeds coach in 1978 when Leeds next played St Helens at Wembley

Thanks for posting this Shaun 😊 I was a very proud 7yrs old, at the time. As my father happened to be Frank Wilson. I remember, on leaving the ground, someone spoted the St Helens coach, as in bus. The cup was leaning on the window screen! The bus stopped & I was pushed on eager to congratulate my Dad. 😊 By contrast, in '76 he was chosen to play in the final, travelled to Wembley, only to be told last minute he was dropped. Funny, but I don't think it would happen now? #Black livesmatter comes to mind, plus my father's 'great' relationship with a certain coach!!!

Remember your dad playing very well, more often I saw him play centre. He was a prolific try scorer. It surprises me what you say about 1976 as I don’t remember him figuring much that season and Peter Glynn who was the back substitute at Wembley had figured in most rounds. I wonder who wasn’t due to play?

Sorry to read this week of your dad’s dementia though pleased to hear he has been inducted to Saints Hall of Fame.
