      as mike b vanderboeg (the man who broke the fast and furious scandal on the net)was a huge advocate of bandoleers. I decided that the us-gi version was lacking.
      the gi material to me is just too damn flimsy and weak.
      I bought a sewing machine.
      I ordered various colors and weights of webbing.(they have some very thin and strong versions out now)NO COTTON!
      I also was dis-pleased with a lack of camo. so I bought dozens and dozens of yards of various camo patterns.
      I ordered FDE "D" rings(metal)yes, they are out there.
      Also ordered buckles for the webbing,,1 inch.
      ordered 1 inch quick detach rifle sling snaps.
      I more or less copied the dimension of the gi bandoleer with new camo material.
      added the D ring into the bandoleer, at the ends.
      at first i thought the card board inserts were the way to go,,, i made some but was not pleased overall.
      what i came up with is my,,,"pocket in a pouch".
      i made a small pouch that held the 3 ,,10 round strippers.
      put the 30 rds in the pouch, then inserted into the bandoleer.
      made the pouch(VERY IMPORTANT HERE)2 or so inches TOO long so that,,,,,
      i inserted the pouch and let the TAIL of the pouch hang out of the bandoleer. when ammo needed just yank on the tail,,out comes the pouch.
      ammo does not rattle nearly as much in the pouch.
      plus, if i will not need ammo soon, i can tuck the tail of the pouch into the bandoleer pocket.( a very good seal)
      then i used webbing and the adjustment buckle to make slings for the bandoleers.
      no safety pin needed.
      the bando slings used the cheaper metal snaps that connected the sling to the d ring.
      these bandoleers look better function better and will take much more abuse.
      then i came up with an ingenious bandoleer for M1 garands.
      line up 4-5-6 pockets for the clips,,,,
      but leave the top(open side)up and put a zipper on the top.
      as you need a clip of 8, just unzip it to where the next clip is exposed.
      d rings on ends with adjustable sling,,,the way to go.
      BTW, I made some bandos for the 5.45x39 that i have,,,,
      if you have never seen the somewhat rare(EXPENSIVE) stripper clips for the 5.45x39,,,you must see how the commies engineered them. the best ever made.
      In 1970 I was in home economics 6th grade,,Mrs. Mendenhall was my teacher.
      this is where I tried to learn how to operate a sewing machine.
      I was not good back then at all. 40 years later after some practice I was able to do very good work.
      impressed my mother.
      thx teach.

      every vet who been in cobat knows one never load a full 30 round, dueto the fact some magazines will "will" get hung up cause is the spring of the mag with carbon 80% of the time get dirty very quickly.
      😬

    • @aediway1518
      @aediway1518 5 лет назад +28

      I was infantry for 8 years, and during that time I also never knew that the bandoleers could hold extra 30 round mags just by removing that white string. We just went out and bought our own personal bandoleers to do that. The money we would of saved, oh well, we still got the job done.
      Also that tip with the M240 ammo cans was awesome. I huffed the M240 B for 2 years and we never carried the ammo that way, which would of made everything so much more easier. Instead we the belts out of the cans and spooled the rounds, placing them loosely in an assault bag or IFAC pouches. We should of done this instead, would of saved so much time. I did have a short belt, about 20 rounds already in the weapon system, just for a quick burst; once prone, I would load a proper belt and let the weapon sing. Loved the 240.
      The speed loaders worked some of the time for me, either they did not fit onto the mag or the stripper clips went into the mags with the rounds. Usually I would just go from one speed loader to the next, until I found one that worked for me.

If you plan on storing your mags loaded, only load 28 rds. total. The tracers at the end of your mags will remind you to reload just as you run dry. • @BulletSpoung
      @BulletSpoung 7 лет назад +15

      Yes, if you just down load buy one or two rds. it can add reliability if stored loaded for long periods, being longer than one year and up to 30 years or longer. Some manufactures have added a bit of length to the mag and use super high quality springs helping with long term storage problems.

    We used to load magazines by ramming the stripper clips on the edge of the ammo table, saving injury to our thumbs. Loads pretty quickly that way too. Tap the magazine on the table to assure all the bullets are seated properly and yer golden.
    Pretty clever using the mg ammo bandoleer straps with knots in them to carry the ammo cans over yer shoulder.

    • @ratagris21

      You can use another magazine also to push them down as well. Every second counts and the longer you can keep using your thumbs the better. No need to blow out your thumb joints or get blisters.

    • @skildude
      @skildude 6 лет назад +2

      yeah I dont like the idea of pointing the business end of bullets toward my body. Not sure why anyone would use a bandoleer for storing mags. ammo pouches are generally more than enough. As I recall from a platoon mate that was in vietman, additional ammo was stored in the ruck sack for ease of toting. He stated that as a Marine on patrol in Vietnam he carried around 500 extra rounds on his back.

      A bullet and cartridge is non directional without a barrel to guide it. In the case of a round detonating outside of a chamber, the brass case will fail at the same time if not sooner than the jacketed bullet will separate, basically turning the cartridge into a firecracker with some added shrapnel. The brass casing actually has a much higher chance to injure you in that situation than the bullet does.

    • @quentintin1
      @quentintin1 5 лет назад +12

      @@skildude
      because as said in the video, you may be sent on a mission requiring more ammo, and you have more mags than you have pouches for them. there are a lot of pics of US soldiers in Vietnam carrying extra ammo in bandoleers with full mags, the LCE pouches could only carry 2x3 mags (even those for M14), the bandoleer could carry 7 additional mags, even if you did not feed your gun with mags straight from the bandoleer, it could be used to swap the empties from your pouches during a short lull in the fight
      and if you have issues about that weight flopping on your body, they come handy with a safety pin to tighten them on your chest

    The new style bandoleer has a feature the older style didn't have. Old bandoleers had 6 pockets containing two 10-round clips each, total of 120 rounds. But did not have the extra space to make the bandoleer a magazine holder after the removal of that loose string. That is a great idea. Plus the newer style having 4 pockets containing 3 each 10-round clips, totaling 120 rounds. Seems to take less space when slung over the shoulder. Plus the loose string/magazine holding capability. Wonderful idea. Things are getting better all the time.

    • @whomagoose6897

      The lids to all US ammo cans can be separated from main part of the ammo can. Completely open the lid. Slide the lid left to separate the lid from the main compartment. May have use a open and closing motion to get to separate. Works best when loading the M2 machine gun, .50-bmg. The gun mount has a holding tray for the ammo can. Removing the lid prevents the lid from bouncing around when on a moving vehicle. Reverse the process to put the lid back on the can.

    • @Todkaninchen
      @Todkaninchen 7 лет назад +15

      The Vietnam era bandoleers are how you describe. They didn't have the "extra" space to open up to a 30-round length because they were the right length for a 20-round magazine which was standard when that bandoleer was standardized.
      That's also why each (old) pocket held 2 10 round stripper clips (to fill said 20-round magazines).

    • @whomagoose6897
      @whomagoose6897 5 лет назад

      @Travis Thacker :Taking the top off of most of the M-2a1 ammo cans is fairly self-explanatory. Just completely open the lid. Notice the two piece hinges connecting the lid to the main can. One part of the hinge is attached to the lid, the other side is attached to the main compartment. Push the lid toward the hinges that are on the lid. May need to open & close the lid to slide the hinges off the pins inside the hinges. Reverse the process to reattach the lid for later use.
      The Russian ammo cans are great and last a long time. But once opened the can cannot be resealed. I've seen some decades old ammo from the Russian ammo cans. Never saw ruined ammunition from any Russian ammo can that was intact with an unbroken seal. Only problem was if there was any unused ammo there wasn't any way to reseal the original can.
      The M-2a1 ammo cans can be reused until it completely falls apart. I think all NATO allies use the M-2a1 ammo can. Don't need to use bungee cords to keep the ammo can on a pedestal mount. There is a spring clamp on the ammo can shelf to keep the can from falling off. There was a similar clamp on the shelf fro the M-60 (7.62x51 NATO) pedestal mount. Just smaller than the M-2, .50-bmg.

      Notice how he turned the magazine so the spine was away from him (as was the stripper clip and spoon). If you make sure you have space between your thumb and the stripper clip and spoon, you shouldn't have a problem. Turn it around and you'll keep biting the fleshy part of your hand near the base of your thumb.

    Brent's right about newer Marines not getting trained in these techniques. I went through School of Infantry in 2013 and they didn't teach us any of this. I seem to recall the only hint we ever had regarding these mysterious stripper clips was from a student NCO(there were POG NCOs on their second term of enlistment going through SOI so they could become infantry) briefly describing their use to us privates. Now I can't decide which taught me more, SOI or Brent's videos.

    I strongly recommend MagLula speed loaders. Far easier to use then those spoons and not much heavier.
    In addition, if you have the time available, it is good to pre-bend the tab on one side of each clip, which will make sliding the rounds off far easier. This also greatly extends the service life of clips if re-using them is a concern to you.

    I served with the Marines in the mid 1980's, attending what was then called ITS at Camp Pendleton. Had lots of live-fire exercises so had many instances where we had to load our magazines. Unfortunately, speed loaders were very rare to come across, so you almost always had to remove the rounds individually from the clip. If you were fortunate enough to find a speed loader, (if you were the first person to break open a case of ammo it was the first thing you looked for) you held on to that sucker and didn't let it get out that you had one. There were also live-fire exercises where you had a 1 in 5 tracer mix, so it was just easier to load the rounds singly.

Plus my own personal experience with ammo resupply during a firefight. Time is a valuable commodity.....

    I'm an army national guard avionics mechanic. We rarely will see combat if ever. Yet we're trained on every infantry weapons system the army has. Excluding grenades and rocket launchers. Those we had in basic. I had a Sergeant who was previously a marine for 8 years then went into the NG and I believe was an MP? Then came to aviation. He took the time to show me how my pouches should be placed on my body armor. No one used the Molle bandoliers that we were issued. He made sure that if it held mags we had it on our person and easy to access. I think I ended up with the ability to hold 10 M16/M4 mags. He said that if you have space for a mag bring it. I'd rather have too much than not enough. He was part of the Iraq invasion in 03' among others. It was just a handful of times he taught me a few of these things. He transferred to another unit just recently. Now I'm stuck with POG's who don't know a thing about this stuff. I've been assigned to a Downed Aircraft Recovery Team (DART). It is more likely for me to leave the fence and knowing this stuff is helpful.

    This is one basic skill, but it just goes to show our younger fighting force is less effective out of basic than it could be. it's getting worse the more we have to coddle the soft & weak (prizes for last place) One guy out of the fight trying to reload can mean the difference between going home or not. That's why training is so critical. Muscle memory is reflex, reflex is a life saver. Glad you are helping teach a simple but critical skills to our younger defenders.

      Its actually a Yugo M53.

      It's a gun, just a tool. An inanimate object. When you pull the trigger, it shoots at anything it is aimed at. Americans, Germans, Russians, Afghanis, deer, wild pigs, steel targets, whatever. The person that pulls the trigger is who decides what it shoots.

    You are absolutely right! They don't make NCO's like they used to where hip pocket training was opportunity knocking whenever JOE is stagnant. Excellent video.

    wow, all these years I was told the safety pin on the bandoleers were for not losing your speed loader spoon and the making of a strap on the 30cal can just amazing. And yes this info is fantastic for the civilian prepper/survivalist also. Thank you.

      +hallard069 I've heard that was one of the uses of it, but hands down the primary reason to tighten the strap.

      Espically in russian ammo. 7.62x54r and 7.62x39 you can get in crates for a lot cheaper. Just remember with russian surplus it has corrisive primers so clean your weapon very well afterwards

    My old Battalion Commander would give you an Article 15 for having your BDU tailor fit to your torso like that haha.
    The BDU was meant to break up the shape of the human body. When we first were transitioning from our old OD
    Green Fatigues to the Woodlawn pattern BDU uniform in West Germany in the 1980's our Bn Commander had to put out a
    directive that the next person he caught wearing starched and ironed BDU uniform would be getting an Article 15.

      @Steve Campbell What with starch , creases and taliored bdu's ? . An army is supposed to be just that a fighting force not to look pretty

      @Steve Campbell it was still the cold war , training etc I guess I expect more . I served 1987 to 1992 , I hated the bullshit on base and uniform inspection's daily just the petty bullshit

      @Steve Campbell Yes Steve, there was a time when most everyone gave a bit more care to their appearance when they went out in public.
      Would you believe back in the early 2000's when I lived in Houston, Tx we had a bank robbed about a block from my computer repair shop on Hwy 6N and the woman who robbed it was wearing baggy gym clothes and a shower cap.
      I mean really.....if you are going to rob a bank at least dress nice.

    A thought: Make notes of known shortcomings of noobs, and as part of new guy orientation teach them the skills that they may or may not know. Add to the list as new skills are needed, put items not commonly needed to a “ask about...” sublist.
    When PCSing stateside, hand the list over to your replacement (and keep a copy for yourself).
    Not my original idea, I got it from a USMC publication made during the Vietnam era. The preface said that much experience and knowledge was being lost by the rotation of units and replacement forces.
    Thank you for making these videos, I learn something new every time!
