RIDING TIPS: Countersteering

  • Countersteering! One of the easiest, simplest, and sometimes most confusing things you'll ever do on your motorcycle!
    Whether new or experienced, you MUST understand the concept of countersteering. It's a vital tool in the motorcyclists arsenal. But not something to be left in the toolbag for an emergency, but rather something to be used each and every time you throw a leg over your motorcycle. A master of countersteering is a master of their motorcycle, and a master of a safe ride from point A to point B.
    What did you think? As always, I'd love to hear your questions and comments below. Also; I apologize, but there was an issue with my audio that I've not yet sorted out! Hoping it's just a fluke and nothing in my system has 'failed'! I normally pride myself in having some of the best, most un-muffled audio in all of the moto-vlogosphere!
    Questions, comments, thoughts? Let me know in the comments, please! I am always taking requests; if there's something you want to see, I may include it in a future video!

    Push right, go right. Push left, go left.
    Look where you want to go, and don't target fixate.

    • @mtnmotoadv
      @mtnmotoadv 6 лет назад

      Similar to reversing a trailer. Want to turn the trailer left? Turn the bottom of the steering wheel left

    • @axslinger99
      @axslinger99 5 лет назад +3

      Yep, that's another great tip, look where you're going. I've never owned a larger road bike before and have had my Indian for about 6-weeks. One of the first things I learned was counter-steering and looking where you want to go. It took me some getting used to, to look what I was going but then it hit me, when you're in a car, you can't look right in front of you at he road, you're always looking ahead at least a hundred feet. Sometimes more and sometimes less but you're looking where you want to go. So, it made sense that you would do the same on a bike.
      On a bike, because you can see the ground right in front of you, if you're not experienced, it's easy to fixate on that. But when you take that away and treat the bike the way you would a car, as far as where you're looking, it makes everything easier.

I just got my honda and I am just trying to get use to it , to practice , not in traffic of course :)) .

    good video man. When i was 19 i got my first road bike, a harley sporty 883, and just took off. had no idea about counter steering ect. i rode for YEARS and never even heard the term. Now I've been putting it into practice for a few years now and NO DOUBT it makes a better, in control rider of you.

    I'm a new rider and have watched a number of pretty confusing videos on countersteering. This was the most succinct and easy to understand and it's stupid simple. THANK YOU ROMANS FIVE EIGHT!!

    Extremely well done by keeping it simple because after 40 years it is~! So many riders don't practice sudden counter steering turns to avoid sudden obstacles. Saved my life more than once.

      David Peavy The best way to practice 'sudden counter steering' is to use countersteering to maneuver the bike at all times! Then it's just natural! Thanks for the comment!

    Very informative video. I grew up riding dirt bikes but seldom rode street. I finally got the Harley of my dreams and love it. I noticed that i was having a hard time controlling the bike at times. I realized that if I did not think about what I was doing I did better. I think I was counter steering by instinct, which is both good and bad. Now that I have seen this and several other videos I will try to do it consciously. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

    I finally got home for a few days and despite the torrential rain, I found time to ride. I applied the counter steering you demonstrated and it worked. I still have to figure out the acceleration to push ratio but that will come in time. I was surprised to feel the bike roll the opposite way I pushed, I thank you for taking the time to make this video.

    I gotto tell you, I"m a new rider and although I was able to ride okay somewhat I couldn't figure out why I felt "terrified" ride my big cruiser especially on semi big roads where there was lots of "wind" blowing at me. I literally was scared of the wind, I thought the wind will blow the bike away. So I went on google and search how to ride in the wind - and the answer was "counter-staring" watched a few vids on that, tried it out and BAM!! All my riding fears are gone! I feel in total control of the bike and total control of the road. The ONLY way to ride a bike is by using counterstaring, Period. Awesome vid btw

    I absolutely love this video. I am a very visual learner & recently got a bike, though I haven't had much opportunity, as of yet to ride. I have heard from people, read, & watched videos on the subject (or at least beginners videos) & none have shown (either due to poor explanation or awkward camera angles) the concept in such an easy to understand way to follow. Thank you so much for this video from all of us first-time riders.

    Best counter steering explanation I’ve seen, thank you. Yes, so many others dumb it down to the point they’re wrong! BTW, for wanna be motorcyclists, you can jump on a pushbike or ebike, really any two-wheeler, and you can practice the physics of counter steering.

    good explanation, i was lucky and had 2 really good MSF instructors who were very passionate about riding and really knew their stuff. they brought us inside and put us all on a bike they held the front as we pushed, to show us how it would work before we put it into practice. once again good job Roman keep it up!

    Thank you for posting this video. I've read about countersteering. But the concept didn't make sense to me. Finally, it clicked for me when I watched your video.
    In the MSF class we were taught to "press" the grips to steer the bike. It works. But, even on the smaller bikes, it's tiring to the arms and shoulders. And I imagine it would be very tough to do on a big heavyweight cruiser.
    Since I've been concentrating on countersteering, my arms feel better and there is much less numbness in my hands and fingers at the end of the ride. Plus I feel more "in control" of the bike and that's a lot more fun!

    New rider. Been riding my M50 since august 2013 and for the longest time, I thought counter steering was only for speed bikes. I discovered counter steering for the first time by myself in April! Not only is it much easier to maneuver, it is less tiring and crucial for safety. Fellow new riders, you may think you don't need to counter steer and leaning is better just try it once, I guarantee you will find it rather fun and discover what your bike is really capable of when it comes to handling. You will enjoy the windy curvy roads instead of looking at the veterans and asking yourself how the hell are they riding so fast through these turns.
    Great video, really enjoyed it. I'm going to vote on "visor up" for better audio. RIDE SAFE everyone.

    As a resuming rider after a few years between bikes my issue is one of the things that you stated -- at higher speeds it gets progressively harder to turn the handlebars. This caused me to feel apprehensive every time I'd go past 45 - 50 mph or so. I'd feel concerned that I couldn't adequately control the bike. I realize now that I simply need to focus on countersteering until it becomes ingrained in my muscle memory. Thanks for posting this.

    This is a great video. For new riders begin by riding a bicycle and noticing the way it handles. The biggest difference between bicycles and motorcycles is speed and weight distribution at low speeds or while stopped. The handling/steering while riding however is similar. And remember, there are old riders and there are BOLD riders, but there are few OLD BOLD riders. Ride defensively and always wear proper riding gear.

    When I'm riding with one hand I push right to go right and I pull back to go left. You are totally right about counter steering. It amazes me how many riders think leaning turns the bike.

      @RomansFiveDotEight  9 лет назад

    • @jacksoncapper
      @jacksoncapper 9 лет назад

      You're right, the rider doesn't lean, but the bike does. If you turn the handlebars left, the bike wants to go left, but the inertia pushes it into a right lean, as the mass of a motorcycle is above the fulcrum (the contact between the tyres and the road). With the wheel contact now on the right hemisphere of the tyre, the bike turns right. Counter-steering is the process of achieving a lean. A rider leaning is simply adjusting his mass and centre of gravity to compliment the turn.

    That's the way the MSF book teaches it, that's the way the MSF instructors are taught to teach it. BUT, some are teaching 'push down' with the excuse that 'it's easier for students to understand'. But wrong is wrong, even if it's easy to understand misinformation!

    Very well explained. Just a two little comments. 1. weight is important as well. Not for steering (altough if you leave your handlebars free and shift your weight, it'll also start turning slowly (and handlebars will actually move to countersteer position themselves due to change in COG point), but actually for better COG (center-of-gravity) point. If you shift your weight in the direction of turn + ideally (but that apply mainly on sportbikes) a bit lower, it'll make quite a difference. At the same speed, the bike won't lean that much, i.e. you have more reserve angle in case the turn tightens up, or you can go faster in the same corner (measured difference makes about 10% on cruiser, 20% on regular bike, up to 30% on sportbikes on circuit, but that's an extreme). Plus the more your bike leans, the more you can help to move your COG down, which helps changing the angle at which the pressure is applied to the tire and it also helps to keep the tire on the ground and not slip. 2. for counter steering, you should always push, never pull the opposite (you said correctly push, but it's worth mentioning not to pull). When pulling, you have less feeling for the front tire response and it's easier to oversteer this way and loose the front tire grip. Also when pulling, you apply muscles that also automatically tend to drag your body over and up, i.e. shift weight the wrong direction. Another reason for pushing and not pulling is that you can push by using also your bodyweight, not only the arm muscles. Therefore you can keep firm grip on the handlebars, while having arms relaxed and free, and generally more relaxed position on the bike, allowing also adjustments in front-rear bodyweight shifting etc. In the end, by correct countersteering in cooperation with proper bodyweight shift and (that's probably even most important) the right throttle control, you will end up with fast, safe and smooth cornering. Once mastered, every corner will bring smile on one's face ;-) Wish tons of relaxed and pleasant miles on your bike, m8 ;-)

      Great info! The reason I didn't mention much about weight is I don't want to throw too much info out there all at once to confuse. You need to learn to crawl before you can walk; and you need to learn controlled, accurate cornering at moderate speeds before you learn any high performance cornering.

    I have to admit after 8 years of riding this is new to me,I cannot think of one time I've used this method but like you said I most likely to counter steer every time I go in to a corner I just don't notice it.

      +Bin Laggin When you start "noticing it", and doing it on purpose, you'll be amazed both at how much more control you have of the motorcycle; and how much quicker you're able to respond in an emergency. Counter-steering, and being proficient at it, is essential.

      Romans Five|Eight LOL! I'm doing it on purpose now that realized what counter steering is.It takes no effort at all! just the slightest touch and the bike falls in to it.I also had no clue what counter steering was so there was no such thing lol.

    Thank you very much for the movie. Let me put an example to see if I have the concept properly, bare in mind that I am not an experienced biker. I am riding in a curvy road and a quite tight left turn is coming up. So to lean the bike to the left I push the left handlebar forward. To take a curve to the right, I have to push the right handlebar forward. Is this correct? Thanks again for the video.

    Thanks Romans for answering my question. I did find a beautiful volusia 900 and tried a Kawasaki drifter 1500 on to see if I fit, but I was completely unstable on it think cause of the long wheel base. Thanks duder, love the vids.
