If you turn left 0,5 sec before you are turning to the right ,it still counts as left??? Is that his brilliant theory??? Try with bicycle, dont make feathers a hen thing.

I find it funny when people say they cant counter steer... even on a bicycle at speed you have to counter steer... I do it at least 50-100 times a day just on my daily 35km bicycle ride on my mountain bike
From an engineers perspective some of the facts are wrong but it's very useful and easy to understand video for the average joe new biker guy.
Believe me, I watched a lot of videos about this particular technique, you explained it better than most of them so far 😄 idk why I'm watching it tho, I knew I always consciously counter-steering but I watch them anyway just to make sure I'm doing it right Hahahaha
All these videos supposed to help the beginner, but they make people worry about basic principles which everyone learned already when we took off our training wheels.
Thank you for this video. I’m new back into biking and have found it strange not having the previous confidence I did when cornering. How to practice counter steer easily
*Buy a Bicycle*
Right. If you know how to ride a bicycle then you know how to counter steer
It always amazed me as a kid riding a nicycle handsfree n tryin to go one way the handels would automatically turn the other way but i would still go in the direction i want to go .... now years later on a motorcycle i m subconsciously doin it without realising until my friend tells me to teach him how to counter steer lol
I passed my CBT here the other week, first time riding a geared motorcycle but road bicycles as much as 300 miles per week well into adulthood. Loved every minute of our 2+ hours on the road test, half on winding country roads, had to swerve a couple of times to avoid stuff in the road, we had some bad storms recently. All that comes naturally from riding bicycles, the eyes lead the head, leads the body, leads the arms hands and legs. All connected. I still need confidence though to ride like a bicycle at low speed, just too worried about dropping the bike in tight low speed turns so I am bolt upright pushing the bars like hell going round tight bends really slow. Hopefully that bit will come, at least it's relatively safe just annoying for anyone behind.
Indeed
Neil Haughey whoa kinky
So I've been doing this all my life and your demonstration is beyond God tier. Thanks mate!
I’ve seen like four counter steering videos and this is by far the best one! Thanks man!
I started riding about 2-3 months ago and had real troubles with curves and I didn't know why. Today while I was riding I started remembering that I heard about counter-steering before and decided to try it. And holy shit, did it make a ton of difference. My turns are not nearly as risky as they were before and I turn much faster. Glad I didn't die in these 2-3 months I was riding
@Wall Cutter I was told never to use my front brakes to stop or slow down so now im confused 😳 whats the difference between front and back brake usage?
@Wall Cutter alright. I've noticed using my back break causing my to slide sometimes but I onoy ise it cause I was told using the front break would make me flip. Ive only been riding a few mo ths now but im still not comfortable enough to take it out every day. Ill give it a shot though man. Thanks for the info
@Wall Cutter Thanks bud! I sure will. You do that same!
Check out Kieth Codes Superbike videos. Twist of the Wrist 1 & 2 these are great and you can find them on RUclips. Understand your SR’s and you will be ok. I followed Kieth 20 years ago and it’s as true today as it ever was. The bikes get better but the science is the same. #ScienceRocket lol
Donivan Morris One thing for sure, never grab the brakes 100% because it will cause the disc locked and you cant control your bike in that situation. The brakes are meant to slow you down by stopping the wheel (not the bike). Now the usage of front and rear brake is depend on your speed and track conditions. Lets assume that the track is aspalt in dry conditions. Your speed is 50km+, first you have to release the throttle, grab the front brakes 90% (your bike will slow down to +-20km) then followed by 90% rear brake, youre going to stop immediately. You can try the rear brake first but it will take longer and farther to stop.

bro lmao
Of all the counter steering vids I have seen the last 2 days..... this was the only one that A) made sense and 2) was demonstrated so I could understand it. Thanks.
This is the simplest yet the best explanation about counter steering I've ever seen.
You have to remember that, unlike a car, you're actually riding on an inverted pendulum. Imagine yourself balancing a broom with one hand. If you want to make it go left, you don't move your hand to the left. The tip would just be left behind and fall to the opposite side. So, you first have to make the broom *lean* left, and to do that you move your hand underneath it to the right,. Once it starts to fall to the opposite side, you "follow" it at the base.
It's the same on a motorcycle. To go left, you first have to move the wheels underneath it to the right. You do that by steering to the right. That will make the bike "fall" to the left. Once it's falling, now you can "control" the fall by counteracting it with speed and steering as you go around the corner.
Best layman's explanation that I have come across.
excellent analogy
This actually makes it easier to understand. Thank you for that!
You fuckin science rocket
Easier to understand, but still confused. If you turn right and the bike leans left, then you have to quickly turn left the handlebars left to actually go left? So isn’t that just jerking the handle bars???
all i do is lean and i dont even ride a bike
You're probably countersteering without knowing it, I did it for years whilst riding my bicycle without realising.
bruh
verdammde agsd

Thomas Bate u trippin bruh
You know I've never really even thought about this because I just do it naturally. Been riding motorcycles for 50 years and have never thought about the physics of steering. Always came natural to me. After watching this I realized I do counter steer all the time.
Great video and demonstration and explanation. Cheers
So satisfying how good your mic is on that bike. I don’t even ride motorcycles, and I stayed for the whole thing. Nice video!
"I ain't no science rocket"
Jack clearly lmao
The analogy of pushing the left bar, rather than turning the bars right to go left is so helpful. I dont even ride yet, but I appreciate this. Thanks.
Yes and if I told you I could walk on water would you believe me?
For those wondering how this works, its mainly because of inertia! So as Dave said when you are above 10-15mph and move to handlebars to the right, lets say, the bike actually does move the right (Very slightly) but your body stays relatively still. This causes your center of gravity to shift to the left side of the bike meaning the bike now wants to go left. I hope this makes it more clear about the science behind his demonstration, its very cool how it works!
I think the mechanism is a bit different. The offset of the Centre of gravity would not be enough to have a significant result. If the front wheel is turned right however, there is a gyroscopic effect that forces the bike to lean left, which is strong, but dependent on the speed the wheels spin at, hence it doesn’t work at slow speed. With your explanation, countersteering would be almost exactly as effective at slow speeds
So if your body in neutral way and want to turn left and you pull the left handlebar do you fall from it or its just going to go to the left, i still don't understand yet cause i have no bike yet anybody can explain it is it necessary or not because what i trying to understand and knowing is if you want to turn left or right on above 15mph can you still push it to the direction we want to go without the counter steer?
How is this different to normal steering?
Turn handlebar right - go right.
Left - left.
No?
@@alchercraft7014 you would theoretically fall from your bike but you automatically countersteer without even noticing it, so no worries. Countersteering can also be done intentionally in order to quickly dodge something for example
@@semenivanoff8615 no, countersteering is turn handlebar right, go left

when you understand counter steer and use it, it helps during the time of panic. glad that youtube exist and teach it for FREE
This helped me so much, I picked up a dirtbike and have never ridden a bike in my life other than a pedal bike, and when people were explaining to me how if you turn left your going to go right, I thought they were insane, I ride atv's which turn normal, you turn to the left your going left no-matter the speed, this video is great, thank you
You probably used countersteering on bicycle but you didn't noticed that.
Yep, it's the same effect when you're going really fast on a bicycle, but most people don't realize it.
Well you can, but most cyclists don't. I disagree with the OP regarding counter-steer. Counter-steer is very obvious if you keep the bike/motorcycle straight up with no lean to either side. No argument there. But as far as bike riders go, you enter a turn leaning and fraction of a second later turning.into the direction of the turn. There is zero counter steer.
If you are leaning and then steering into the turn you're doing it wrong. If you don't believe it, just try avoiding something in the road by steering quick and hard into the direction you're turning. You'll see the bike wants to stand up and go the wrong way.....At least try what he says, you'll see it works much better than what you're doing now.
Lehmann Peters it depends on the speed your traveling. Bicycles are the same as motorcycles. The front wheel does not slide sideways. If you turn the handlebars to the right what your doing besides pointing the front tire right, your shifting the neck of the frame left of center. That's what makes the bike lean. Not you physically leaning. You can push against the side of the neck while leaning which also forces the front tire the opposite way slightly causing the bike to lean. Otherwise leaning your weight to the left only makes the bike lean right without turning the wheel. COG will equalize when your going straight ahead.
Young0Kuleczka / yeah thats it

This video is crystal clear - Instantly understood counter steering after watching. Thank you. Especially the part where you compared how fast counter steering responds compared to leaning.
I’m about to get my first bike so I’ve been reading, watching, and soaking up every bit of knowledge I can to help get started practicing, and hopefully learn things fairly quickly. The idea of counter steering was so confusing to me. I’ve seen several videos and read about it, but the videos were either underwhelming in explanation or just talk and no demonstration. Your video and demonstrations of both using normal steering at low speeds, and then using counter steering around 10-12 mph has really simplified counter steering in my brain. Now I can’t wait to get my bike, hit an open parking lot, and test out everything I’ve learned. Thank you!

2:50 to 3:00..It's important people to understand to push AWAY from you....not directly downward which will do not jack crap. You learn by feeling it.
I got on a trike (converted bike) a few years back, never having ridden one before, after decades of bikes, didn't think about the fact that it wasn't remotely like riding a bike. Rode in a straight line across the lot we were in and had to get through a gate - I nearly smashed into the gate-post at 30MPH because I reflexively counter-steered ...... and counter-steered, and counter-steered for several seconds, my muscle-memory just didn't get why the f***ing thing was going the opposite way I wanted it to.
The Editor of Road Runner Magazine was seasoned motorcycle rider with decades worth of experience. Died getting on a curved on-ramp for
the freeway while riding a motorcycle with a sidecar. It was a real shame. His name was Christian and was an incredibly nice guy.
I think because of the triangulation of the balance isn't the same as when just the balance of two wheels

That was immensely helpful, and simple.
I just needed to see it CLEARLY done by someone.
Very nice demonstration with the leaning vs finger. Thanks!
Damn! And all this time I thought he was a science rocket!!
mumbo-jumbo science-rocket notes: counter steering works for two reasons:
1) push left bar forward, front wheel points right and rolls out from under bike's balance point, and bike falls left (that is, it leans left immediately), so the bike turns left because of the lean. this is the main reason counter steering works, accounting for 85% to 90% of the effect.
2) newton's second law (F=mA, force equals mass times acceleration) applied to rotation (or t=I.alpha, torque equals moment of inertia times angular acceleration). this torque effect is often cited first by us science rockets with our fancy-pants educations, but it is typically just a 10-15% effect.
but, ahem, regardless all the effects and their relative importance, the theory is useless in a split-second decision (like in that bike-vs-firetruck video that made you jump out of your chair). you don't have time to think or work out the theory in a split second. what you need is muscle memory from shit-tons of practice. so get off your computer and go counter steer, counter steer, counter steer until you do it in your sleep.
(finally, for the super geeky, in mumbo-jumbo science-rocket terminology, the 1st effect is called a holonomic constraint, i.e., the contact patch of the front tire is determined by its position relative to the pavement over time, assuming you don't skid while executing this maneuver.)

Very informative, yet "approachable" for those learning!
Exactly. Wikipedia states this concept is often presented incorrectly, even in scientific literature. Dave puts it in a a way that's easy to understand, which is important for those trying to grasp the concept (as you say, made the topic approachable).
So it wasn't _actually_ approachable, hence the quotes?
I didn't go to the Chris Farley school of sarcastic quotes, so that's not what I meant (and you fuckin' know it). Approachable is a term usually used before a noun (a person, place, etc.), and so I was unsure of it's usage as it applies to an instructional lesson, *_hence the quotes._*
Maxx Fordham Quotes means he quoted, quotes don't mean sarcasm. Life isn't a Seinfield episode.
I watched a video with graphics just before this. And man. This was a billion times better to understand. Thanks bro!
Great video, finally got the idea of counter steering after your demonstration and explanations! Thanks!
Just tried this today. HOLY HELL. It feels so good. I feel like my cornering angle just doubled.
Were you just going less than 20 km/h before this?? Countersteering is the ONLY way of steering a 2 wheeled vehicle. Countersteering isn't some sort of 'technique' to turn effectively, it's the ONLY way of turning. If you've been riding faster than a human sprinting speed, then you have used countersteering. I really don't understand how it's a mystery to some people.
@@AQHackAQ I think you can normal steer until 30-40kmph?
If I knew this when I bought my bike I wouldnt have sold it after my second ride. I couldnt get comfortable leaning out and apparently it was because I was steering wrong. Thank you, might go sell my truck for another bike :)

This demo is so helpful for me. I watched a dozen of counter-steering videos and I understood the physics of it. But when I look at their handle bars, they are always pointing left to turn left pointing right to turn right. Your one finger demo cleared up my confusion - you INITIATE a turn by counter steering, but after that, the handle bar is still gonna point to the direction of the turn. Perfect demo. Thanks x 100.
This is the best comment on counter steering here!
Great video Dave and don’t sell yourself short you are a science rocket!
3rd video of counter steering. This is the one that got thru. Thanks. Im waiting to take my motorcycle class that has the riding test later. This was the only thing I was having trouble.
I had counter steering explained to me this way: “If you want to turn your bike, you must tilt the bike. In order to tilt the bike off-centre you must counter steer. To turn left, push left. To turn right, push right.”. All was clear after that.
Good vid. Leaning will never take the place of counter steering.
C. R. M. Yeah, once you get comfy pushing the bars to the direction that you need your bike to go, you can transition to tilting the bike by dipping your knee down for sharper corners like turns at intersections. Precise CS is esp needed for higher speed highway turns & curves. It's all a weird but fun concept. Thats why motorcycling is so much fun.
