      Problem I have is my budgies are very finicky; they only want to eat the foods that are "fun to them"; millet sticks (loaded with honey) and Avi-cakes (lots of sugar). They will not eat pellets! Your birds are used to you; it seems they know what to expect from you. You give them very nutritious food and they look so good. But I am not giving up; every time I see you video on feeding, it gives me hope that I can get them on a better diet.

      Take the honey sticks away and Avi cakes. Take away seeds at night and offer pellets and fresh foods in the morning and they will get hungry and eat it.

      I also give this stick that has seeds on it (not sure what it’s called) I give it to him every 2 weeks (assuming he doesn’t finish it) I give him lots of pellets and seeds, However his diet is pretty bad, so I’m trying to look for videos to see what he can eat.

    I'm having trouble even getting my cockatiel to eat crumbles, its 80% of the food content in the bowl. the rest is small parrot seed mix. My cockatiels favorite are the grey sunflower seeds. Very interesting video, i'll need to pick up those attachable feeders and maybe that fruit kebab stick and clips.

    • @Bundyburger09
      @Bundyburger09 5 лет назад +4

      If your seed mix has sunflower seeds, take them out. They should only get them as treats.
      If your bird won't eat the pellets yet you need to increase the seed ratio until they start to pick up bits of pellets, then gradually increase the pellets.

    This is exactly what I learned this summer...so happy!!
    I now have an adorable male parakeet! He flew into my screened in pool this past summer! I then read everything I could about how to care for him!
    I had NO idea about birds!
    At 1st I was giving veg & some fruit cut up...but he was not interested!
    This chopped mix worked perfectly!
    He's so happy!!
    Bravo on your birdies & videos!!
    WE all appreciate your tips!!
    I'll add that I was thrilled to train myself & my little Woodstock...he will fly to me now & learning to get back to cage!
    I love that he can use my whole screened in pool area for flying...especially as most of the year is beautiful here! I also have a room for him to sleep in his cage at night... I make sure he gets 12 hours sleep nightly!
    Anyhoo... Thanks again!

    Great video. I hope more bird owners see it. As I find myself often saying to new bird owners to give fresh veggies and not just seeds. My budgies get something everyday. Yesterday was a bit of mango. Today they get salad and tomorrow a mixture of cauliflower and broccoli! I can't wait for summer for some fresh berries. And I hear some herbs such as sorrel, basil and chives are good too. I look forward to trying something new.

  • @jima9356
    @jima9356 5 лет назад +1

    Glad you showed this video. I'm always trying to get my budgies to eat fruits and vegetables, but they show little desire. I give them mixed veggies (peas, carrots, corn, green beans) but it seems most of it gets tossed around, winds up on the bottom of the cage. Placed in a blender but turned it into mush and soon it is spoiled. I'll try shredder or food processor, maybe just slice them down smaller. Only one of the 4 budgies will eat pellets; they love seeds, especially millet sticks; now I realize it's the honey on the millet sticks, so I'll avoid giving them that.
    I always enjoy seeing your birds: Rio, Electra, Monty, Jingles, Willow, bourkes, Sprinkles, Sky, Nugget, Sterling, Splash, etc,... and of course - Jack Sparrow.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 лет назад

      Try chopping it smaller and sprinkle millet on top. Avoid those seed sticks as they are made with honey. Cook some quinoa or brown rice, my birds love it and then they usually start eating the other foods. Add oats to the mush to soak up the moisture.

    I made a beautiful chop and she wants nothing to do with it. Here’s my situation. I rescued her on Dec 11, 2023 from Kijiji. She’s a green cheek conure (1 1/2 years old) She was in this very tiny cage with no toys, she never had anything. This man who could hardly speak English had that cage right next to the front door so high up that she was almost on the ceiling, so not even at eye level. I don’t know for sure if she was neglected because she’s very friendly and sweet with me. They say this species likes to bite but mine doesn’t. He was feeding her seeds and sugary fruit loop cereal which made me buy her just to get her out of there. I need her to eat veggies, I at least got her to eat apples. She’s a sweetheart. Please help me. I threw his food in the trash and got her on pellets, thank God she loves them.

I have offered other foods, in all the forms, but she's not bonded to me, and will bite when I offer other foods. At this point I wonder if she wouldn't be better off being put down. I have a bare eyed cockatoo that I rescued about 3 weeks ago. She has some slightly elevated liver enzymes due to her being on a strictly seed diet. I feel it’s urgent to get her transitioned over to to a healthy diet but she is so stubborn! She’s 25-35 years old and had never had a vegetable or fruit until a few weeks ago. She loves scrambled egg and oatmeal but she refuses almost all veggies and every single fruit. She won’t touch pellets but I do grind some up and mix it with her chop and anything else I offer her like her birdie bread. I’m just concerned about her health and I hate that I have to keep giving her seed since that’s what she’s use to.

    My African Grey parrot Corky used to eat veges, apples & oranges when my Dad was still alive (Corky we Dads bird he raised from a hatchling, he was about 5 when Dad passed (2012). Unfortunately the only have he'd eat after Dad passed were carrots but that took almost 3 years before he'd start eating them again. Now he'll eat carrots, he asks for those constantly, broccoli, sometimes apples, whole green peas still in the pod, sometimes green peppers, I've offered red peppers, and even yellow. I keep offering those I know he will eat and those things he used to eat with my Dad, and I have tried others veges but he's just not interested. He does get his favorite food of all time scrambled eggs about once a week and the occasional extra sharp cheddar cheese and plain cheerios on occasion besides his regular seed. Is this enough variety or should I keep offering fruits & veges that he used to eat? Corky's my first parrot, my kids are cats, a dog, and a horse.

    What I’ve searched is that parrots (excluding lories and lorikeets) need to have a diet of about 70% fresh food and about 30% seeds and nuts. It depends on the parrot species as well but their main diet should be fresh food. I’m not an expert but I feel like feeding pellets is just like having vitamin supplements. And if I had to feed pellets I’ll do only a small amount since they’ll get most of their nutrition from their chop

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 лет назад

      Fresh food is important. It's so difficult to provide our birds with the diet they need and what they would normally eat in the wild. There is so much avian nutrition information on the internet, vets and among bird owners that you have to decide which is best for your bird. Pellets is a huge debate. A seed only diet is not healthy of course.

    • @jorgecanales798
      @jorgecanales798 5 лет назад

      Love of Pets that’s true with the only seed diet. In the wild parrots will eat a higher amount of seeds and nuts since they have to forage for their food and as we know, seeds and nuts have a large amount of calories, therefore they’ll eat less fruits and vegetables in the wild than in captivity because they’re not burning as much calories as they will in the wild.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 лет назад

      Exactly, in the wild their are always flying and moving. They eat fresh seeds, buds, flower and bugs and as the season changes they eat different foods and get a variety. In captivity it's always the same seed and the bird is inactive

      Oh! and I forgot to mention... she really liked it when I would hold full veggies for her to pick at and tear into... but since I couldn't always be there holding the veggies... I started using wooden clothing pins to pin them to the side of the cage, which she then merrily chews upon. ^_^

      She sounds like a sweety. My Kakariki used to rip apart food also. He would step on it and rip or hold it in his foot.

    I know you are a budgie expert too. My new budgie has been with me for 75 days. He has been DAiLY offered millet mixed with budgie pellets and wheat or oat berries or grains and one other seed and offered apples, broccoli, red pepper and carrots, all sliced thin, with millet mix pressed into all of them. But this budgie IGNORES his wheat, oat and pellets and eats ONLY his white millet! Occasionally I train him to perch with millet spray. My budgie will not eat vegetables or wheat berries !!! Please help me !

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 лет назад

      Keep offering and try different foods. Hang some dark leafy greens near a perch as some budgies prefer it that way. Don't put millet in the cage, only use it for training. Feed fresh food in the morning when they are hungry and take out dry food for a few hours. Try the food in different bowls and different locations and chop in different sizes. My CAG will only eat fresh veg, I’ve tried freezing it and she won’t go near defrosted food of any type, I’m still trying different techniques but I think I will need to prepare fresh each day. Also atm she is on kaytee exact, I am trying to get her on Harrison’s organic but she doesn’t even see it as food I think she thinks I’m handing her a pebble or something ! But when I sprinkle crushed Harrison’s on her food she won’t touch it ! 😫

    This will not work with every parrot no matter how hard you try. My cockatoo is hard headed.He will only eat food that he can hold. He only eats scrambled eggs, pistachio's ,baked battered broccoli and cauliflower, and
    Zupreme Nutri-Berries. Occasionally he will eat pea's,edamame,bake beans.
    He will also eat a leaf or two of spinach, but he is picky . My African Grey Congo is REALLY picky as my for my Timneh Grey,he will ATLEAST try everything I offer him.

    My bird is a picky eater atm (green cheek conure) He only loves his seed diet and is obsessed with sunflower seeds. He only likes a few fruits like Pear, Apple. Im trying to change his diet to veggies, pellets but barely anything is working for me. So I hope a few of these tips work eventually.
    Do you also have tips for learning him to eat pellets?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  2 года назад +1

      Hi, take away all dry food at night. In the morning only offer fresh foods. Offer more veggies then fruits. Offer Sprouted seeds, legumes and grains. Offer pellets for lunch or dinner. Take away sunflower seeds and only use them for a treat for training or taming. Offer a small amount of seed in the evening, just a little bit. It may take time so dont give up. Birds are hungriest in the morning so that's why its best to offer the more nutritious foods in the morning. Presentation is key, offer several ways.

    Hi there! I have a question... I can't seem to find what I'm asking anywhere. I have a lovebird, two linnies, and a conure. My lovebird is now fully flighted, which I love for her, it's great to see her getting the exercise she needs, but... She is so insistent about landing on the other birds' cages. I used to put bubble wrap on top of the linnies' and that worked for awhile. I know you let lots of your birds out at once and I would think that most of them are cage territorial, so how do you handle this situation? I was thinking maybe cage top perches would work and they could all use them communally, but I'm unsure if this will be a problem. Maybe I need to create more landing spots? Eventually my linnies will be flighted (I didn't know any better about clipping when I got them) so I need to figure out how to solve this. Again, thanks for all your helpful videos!

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, I have plastic runners on top of my cages and plenty of boings and perches for them to land on. Provide perches or boings that hang above the cages and they usually go there but can land on cages. Playgyms are excellent to put on top of the cage so they can land on it instead of the cage. This is what I use and I cut it to size amzn.to/2vUCElT

    • @apearson79
      @apearson79 5 лет назад +1

      @@Loveofpets The plastic runner is a great idea, I'm definitely going to give it a try. And get more landing spots. I think it's partially because it's spring and she's hormonal so she's frustrating. Thanks!
