    I definitely learned some things with this video. At first, my brain just turned to mush trying to wrap my head around it. After 8 or 10 minutes I felt like I had a vague understanding. Thank you for taking the time to explain.

    This helped a lot, thank you. Aside from knowing how to do the calculations to determine RPM, I understand all I need to for now; I'll come back to that lol. Now I look forward to building different trucks for different purposes, whereas before, I didn't know what the heck I was doing. Thanks a lot!

      The ratios can actually change how you drive the truck. It's nice when you find a set up you like. Makes the shifting more of an after thought and let's you chill a little more when driving.

    On Retarders: Almost never equipped in the US on haul trucks and almost exclusively used in heavy haul / offroad trucks. Even then its extremely rare nowadays. Think of it like a big torque converter bolted to the back of the engine (works whether in gear or not iirc) You apply hydraulic pressure to apply the retarder, and it slows the engine down. At least thats my very, very basic understanding of them.
    Jakes are of course not nearly as popular in Euro trucks as they are loud. So, most Euro trucks have a retarder.

    • @danmcnarry
      @danmcnarry  Год назад

      Thanks Jordan. I'm pretty up on Jakes but had only a very "loose" understanding of retarders. Cheers!

    Thanks for this, do you any videos that go into detail about when to shift and how to manage your RPMs? Since I got my Eaton shifter, I’ve been trying to learn to drive using an 18 speed, but I feel like I don’t fully understand when I should be shifting, what RPM range I should aim for and how much I should let my RPM drop before engaging the next gear (up or down). I’m probably poorly explaining this. Lol

      I have a tutorial on how to shift a 19, 13 and 18 speed transmission including tips. Should be in my ATS Tutorials Playlist l. Let me know if you can't find it.

    How do I make a truck show the L and H when shifting gears? Because, in some truck mods, it’s just sequential 1-10,13,18 and with other truck mods, it goes from L to 8H in which it’s the one that I want. I’m using sequential mode in keyboard btw

    • @danmcnarry

      I realize you are using the keyboard but in the video I linked below you may find the answer.

    So in the base game, looking at the Kenworth W900, I see that the most expensive transmission has 7 speeds, gear ratios of 7.63-0.64, and a 3.55 differential. Based on what you've said, it sounds like that transmission would barely be able to move anything, but it's the "best", at least according to the price point. Does it have any practical use, or is it just something to put on a sightseeing truck that won't be hauling anything?

    • @danmcnarry
      @danmcnarry  Год назад +3

      That would be a full automatic as opposed to an 18 speed autoshift. The full automatic has a torque converter just like a passenger vehicle. IRL this a really expensive yet effective transmission. The torque converter "slips" until lock up which is like having a lower gear ratio and multiplies available torque. You won't see many of them in heavy haul though.

      @@danmcnarry I see; thank you for the info! I just bought my first truck in this game; I put the top-end 18-speed Eaton on it, and it pulls beautifully.

    • @drmagg666
      @drmagg666 Год назад +3

      TLDR; if you want best experience use 18 speed eaton it is easier to use in game (which is ironic lol) it is probably best truly all around gearbox but if you want guns ablaze max speed with decent torque 4700 blows every other transmission away
      allsion transmissions have torque converter in the game too and its working. i believe it even shown in game characteristics
      basically all allison gearboxes are 'speedy' options with far better acceleration compared to eaton due to less power loss when shifting because of steeper ratio difference between gears since there is less of them. what separates 4700 is it has climb gear simply put 1st gear which works like ultra low gear (its not shown in game for whatever reason but you can still see the difference compared to other allison its huge when hill climbing) and since there is VERY little amount of places with long hills 18 speeder eaton (the only real gearbox which could even be considered as alternative best option) would lose badly to 4700 in speed competition since acceleration from 0 to 35 and 35 to 65 is what most important in this game in terms of speed.
      also what engine you have is very important which is where eaton would shine since its a lot more universal so its doesnt really matter but if you are 'always use most powerful engine' type of person allison would be better.

    I feel like 18 gears is more or less pointless using automatic gearbox, whatever load i'm hauling 7 gears or 18 doesn't seem to matter, the only thing 18 gearbox seems to be doing is go through alot of gears, why go through like 5-6 gears instead of 2?.

    • @RogueAdmiral
      @RogueAdmiral 2 месяца назад +2

      It’s really just fuel efficiency more gears means you can keep RPM’s in your engines sweet spot. For instance the Cummins X15 models peak at 1,000 or 1,200 depending on model. So if you have it set to manual you can keep it in the “sweet spot”, as for automatic it’s not as noticeable. Basically it allows for more control over engine power and fuel consumption. You’re better off with 10-13 speed transmission if you do automatic. A 10-12 speed in real life is capable of moving some of the largest legal loads, for instance it could move 68 tons up a grade as steep as 9%.
      In short it’s for the peaks in torque that way you can swap bands to hold that sweet spot, so a transmission is important for fuel efficiency and getting the total potential out of an engine especially when pulling grades. It is also kind of important if playing ATS in hard economy cause a penny saved is a penny earned.

    how does the gear matching work for split gears all other transmission automatically split shift down just be moveing the splitter butten they down follow the basic principlals of gear matching aplly trottle for dowmshift and release trottel for up shift its not like a real truck nobody seems to get that

    • @danmcnarry
      @danmcnarry  Год назад

      Toby, I still blip the throttle on a downshift and back off the throttle on an upshift during a split. You still need to speed match the transmission gears. The game doesn't seem to care though but it is how it's done.

    Im looking for trucks that actually have a manual shifter in the truck. All my trucks on ATS don’t have shifters. They’re basically all automatics but I use my own physical shifter. It would be nice if I could actually have a truck that has a shifter in game too for immersion purposes. I’ve seen other people have them but how?

    • @Austrium1483
      @Austrium1483 Год назад

      Exactly, that’s what pisses me off too, all the Transmissions ingame are automatic, but if you use manual shifting in the settings it stays exactly the same game, only difference is now that you shift and clutch and automatic transmission, which makes zero sense and is just absolutely retarded. They really need to add proper manual gearboxes in that game and not just automatics. Beam NG drive does a fantastic job with that, but unfortunately in ATS it’s a complete mess.

      There is a way. Go to full manual and advanced manual, it's pretty realistic but it dosnt Change In the truck visually unless it's already a manual. But in advanced mode you can float gears
