    In real world trucks, double clutching is an option. For an instance, i “float” my gears and I run a Eaton 18 speed trans in a 2020 Peterbilt 389 Glider kit. I only touch the clutch when starting and stopping. It is tricky at first for a beginner, but it gets easier on down the line. Love the videos Squirrel. Keep it up.

Most of your issues happen between 6-3, stopping and not dropping to low range or missing a gear as you're coming to a stop. If you can't find a gear, shift into "Super Six".

      No, the clutch is not used for splitting. Its actually just a separate 2 spd gearbox that is always in mesh with the transmission. An Eaton 9, 13, and 18 are the same transmission, just with (13 & 18) or without the auxiliary box. Only other difference is splitting both ranges or just the top.

      It's actually stated by Eaton fuller in their manuals the splitter on a 13/18 can not be switched while clutched or in neutral, all selections must be done under load in gear prior to releasing the throttle. Once you release the throttle the splitter automatically shifts though to ease the wear Eaton recommends tapping the clutch after releasing the throttle.

    The tip I would suggest is in addition to the RPM gauge the RPM difference in 10-speed Eaton between gears is usually 400rpm. Another thing you can do is use the Speedometer.. in MPH (Not kilometers) just add the numbers together 15mph (1+5=6th gear), 25mph (2+5=7th gear), etc. so by the time you hit 55mph you should be in 10th.

    Squirrel,
    Truckers don't have to double clutch they do a process called floating gears. The only time they use the clutch is to start out and roll, but after they get rolling and shift to the next gear they just get it to there preferred RPMs, let off the gas, and shift to the next gear. If the trucker doesn't get the RPMs high enough they just have to push in the gas until it pops in gear. When they take there CDL test they are required to double clutch just so they know how to do it. At least that is how it is in montana and that is how it was for my dad and my brother. I don't truck for a living I pilot so euro truck and American truck are amazing games and quite realistic.
    Great video though you are the person who inspired me to go get the race wheel, pedals. and gear box. Then I saw this video and now I am going to get the shifter.

    I try to challenge myself by only using the clutch when I start moving, never at any other time.
    You should switch to advanced gearbox setting in options and learn floating gears. (Shifting with no clutch) downshifting is tricky and a believe you need to be a bit more precise than in a real truck but it's what a lot of truckers do.

    • @matttttttk4698
      @matttttttk4698 8 лет назад +27

      Not more precise but it's harder to tell how close your rpms are to the driveshaft speed. In a real truck you can literally feel how close you are to the correct rpm. Loads easier in real life to shift.

      Not too difficult, just preload the shifter into the lower or higher gear, then rev match until the shifter sticks in. The real challenge is to shift without losing revs to shift into the next year, you hear a lot of trucks with lots of time used between shifts where they're generating literally no power until they're into the next gear, then they drag the gear out as long as possible.

    In a real 18 speed when you split your gear you don't take it out of gear. You simply slide the splitter forward, let off on the fuel, let the RPMs drop a bit, and go back in to the accelerator. Also you don't spit low range unless you are heavy loaded and climbing a steep grade.
    The splitter button is color coded.
    Gray: 18-speed
    Blue: 15-speed
    Red: 13-speed
    9 (sometimes called an 8-speed), 13, and 18 are all related and shifted very similarly
    The 10 has you go into the "pocket" which is the low position for 5th gear.
    A 15 is based on a 10. You generally shift it like a 10-speed, but it has five gears of deep reduction.

      Upshifting is actually pretty easy. You just have to let the RPM drop the right amount and engage the gear. It is about a 250RPM drop for a single gear (ie 5H to 6L) or a 500RPM drop for a double gear change (5L to 6L). It is pretty much a matter of timing things right more than anything else to be consistent with it.
      Downshifting is a bit trickier since you have to give it a bit of throttle before putting it in gear from neutral.

    • @andrew9365
      @andrew9365 8 лет назад +16

    I've been a trucker for decades and I can tell you all that dropping numbers like 250 RPM's or 500 RPM's is not AT ALL how you calculate upshifting or downshifting. EVERY SINGLE engine and transmission combination is different.
    1.) If you have a Deutz, CAT, Cummins, Detroit etc then their behavior and revolution range is very different from one another.
    2.) Another thing that matters is size. 7.3L (ie CAT 250hp in a single axle day cab) or up to a 16L (could be 500hp up to 1200hp) for a tandem or tri-drive highway tractor. Usually the larger the pistons or the stroke being greater means the lower the RPM range.
    3.) The transmission matters for gear ratio. A 9-speed, 10 speed (for city trucks) or up to a 13-speed or 18-speed (for highway trucks) will also differentiate the rpm range for shifts and rev matching for down shifts.

    In real life I drive a 600hp Freightliner with an 18speed Eaton Fuller. I hardly ever use the split in the low range so essentially I drive a 13 speed. I do not use the clutch when changing gear, I change with engine revs between 1400 and 1600 rpm and have no problem. When carrying heavier loads I may let the revs climb a little but never higher than 1800. When down shifting you give the engine a rev while the box is in neutral to match engine revs to where they will be when the lower gear is engaged making for a smoother change.

    • @teamwounder
      @teamwounder 2 года назад

      @Hawker75 engineer and former trucker here. if you time shifts correctly, it does not damage anything. but if you miss gears and grind them, it causes progressive damage. there is no impact on fuel efficiency either method. automated manuals shift without the clutch, since they are so precise it is not needed.

    Hi squirrel, just a small correction.
    The splitter, u dont need to get the speed out to pass it.(i may be wrong for the US gearboxes but i dont think so)
    On any european truck, u set for example the 4th low, than u push the splitter to get in high, stay in speed and just activate the clutch down and back up, and the speed will pass in 4th high. ;-)
    Anyway, nice tuto

    Shame the shifter deant have force feedback. I can't imagine not feeling the actual gears when shifting a manual.
    That said, floating is a thing, and in a Sim it just seems like it would be a little tedious. I suppose you'd get used to it and be able to shift by audio feedback...
    Maybe a subwoofer tuned to rumble according to the rev could be a way to make it a little closer to the feel of the real thing...
    Anyway, thanks for the content.

I feel like such a moron, but know I am loving my ATS a million times more! Squirrel, there is no need to give gas while starting the truck, in real life you would never do this unless your really a noob because it burns up the clutch. The smoothest start is always by just letting go of the clutch slowly in a stronger gear, Lo, 1st with a load. 2-4th no load without giving it gas since the gear is low enough and the engine is strong enough to provide the torque to start rolling. I have a 18 speed truck and without a load(bobtail) i shift it like a 8 speed, with normal loads i shift it like a 13 speed, i only start using the Lo range splitting when pulling a b-train or so up a hill and i don't want to bog down the engine. Try also learning to float the gears. I never double clutched ever, except when i did my driving tests, because it's mandatory, I only adjust my clutch 2-3 times a year and I work in the city, while my drivers which do double clutch need their clutch adjusted every month. Floating the gears is simply shifting without the clutch, it is possible in the game but easier in real life, you just need to match the revs really well, when up-shifting, give it like .5 of a second before shifting to the next gear, if you ever miss a gear just give it gas, let go and try to put it into gear again, When downshifting, I like to use the clutch to just to get it out of the gear to put it into neutral, then blip the throttle to raise the revs then put it into a lower gear. This is the hardest part but eventually you will learn which rpm's work for what ever gear. Also Never split or change the range while going in reverse. In the game you can, but in a real truck you'll mess up the transmission, there's a big notice on the shifter layouts you put up. Finally like explained before when switching from high to low or low to high range , u don't need the clutch , just let go of the throttle for half a second and give gas again, in a real truck if you don't let go for long enough you can catch the selector mid gear and break something. :)

    • @tommeiner9983
      @tommeiner9983 6 лет назад

      I don't know if that would work in the game, because in ETS2 a stronger truck with a normal and 14 speed gearbox (3 gears +range, splitter +splittable crawler) should be able to start from 2L, but it can barely start from C1...

      Nope, 13/18 can merely split em by moving the splitter and letting off the throttle, then reapplying throttle. Same with shifting from gear to gear, Don't need to use the clutch to change gears.

    • @PolarFoxProduction
      @PolarFoxProduction 8 лет назад

      it's way easier than that in mercedes trucks! you usually start in 2nd or 3rd then you change to 5th gear which can be where 5th is in a car upper right, or it can be a "karate" box which you have to flip over to the next set of gears and 3rd's place is now 5th's place :)

    The 18 speed I learned in, the half gears you don't need to shift to neutral. Shift up you flick the selector and press and release the clutch, that shifts you to the half. You then flick it back and change up to the next gear as normal. My rule was up in half's, down full's. so if I found myself in a half gear when shifting down, I just went down to the next half gear, made matching the revs so much easier.

I sent them an email asking about when I can expect to receive my order with no response. I also left two messages by phone. I understand that they are a small outfit but what does it take to send a quick message to a client. if you do order one, do not pay it in full.

      I was going to do this to warn others to not burn their money as well.
      Currently I am waiting for over 3 months since the order was placed, and as you said, no communication.
      In fact the communication from the company have been ceased, and they aren't even answering their phone anymore either.
      In short, they have most likely put too little margin from the sales of devices to cover shipping and parts to make new shifters, and they are now out of funds and can't even ship them (They spent your shipment money to get more parts to make more shifters basically.)
      So most likely CSIO tech is now about to go belly up, there is also the problem with the shifters arriving broken, in those cases you will have to pay to ship it back IF you get a response to your RMA claim.
      In short, avoid this company for now unless you want to lose your money.

      XxSynphulGryphxX it doesn’t suck a lot of kids want to do this when older I can’t get my license but I love to drive my dads trucks and equipment.

      Canadian Pepe The act of driving these trucks is actually pretty fun. The challenge of maneuvering 80' of truck within 2° of straight and 3" of center is fun as hell. Maneuvering that much truck around crackhead drivers who don't know their head from their ass? Dissent story entirely.

      XxSynphulGryphxX My dad use to do trucking, but he said it was fun as hell the only time it sucked was having to deal with people on the road, your customers were dicks, and that a lot of times he would get fired for the smallest shit. For example, he got fired because he wasn't suppose to arrive early but his dispatch never told him and so he got fired, end of story.. He had to even pay for damaged for this driver who brake checked him on then highway (I was with him) and yea... I would love to do this job myself but I wouldn't like to risk to deal with today's society on the road XD

    Just for the record instead of the split ranges being labeled as low and high they can also be labeled Under and Direct, or Direct and Over depending on whether or not your truck transmission is equipped with overdrive. And if you want to see confusion then take a look at the shift pattern for a 20 speed Spicer.

      I know I'm 5 years late, but honestly 6+4 Spicers are quite simple when you take a look at them for a few minutes. e.g. from a standstill, 1+1, 1+2, 1+3, 2+2, 2+3, 2+4, 3+2, 3+3, 3+4, 4+2, 4+3, 5+3, 6+4 and you're up to speed (I think that's how it would work as some gear combinations overlap and for some reason 5+4 is faster than 6+3, even though 6 and 4 are both overdrive and 5 and 3 are direct.

    Great tutorial, mate spot on. I can't wait to get my wheel and my SKRS shifter. I just hope I've bought the right one as it looks a bit different....being an ex wagon driver, I'm looking forward to getting back behind the wheel. 🙂

    Also, you don't need to pull out from the gear to split. And most importantly: *you NEVER move the range lever in neutral!* This game sucks for allowing you to do that.

      You can move the range lever in any shifter position you want but it`s not gonna change the range until the shifter is in Neutral, this coming from Eaton themselves and several trainers.

    You also have a hidden gear as well, that if your Not a truck driver you wouldn’t know about it. The Hidden Gear is Hi-Range but you put the gear stick in The Low, which is directly below the Reverse gear. I’m a truck driver in real life and I use this hidden gear all the time. We use it at times in City driving when you want to just casually roll along in heavy traffic conditions or coming off a hill is always a good gear ratio and yes you can split that gear as well, but once you want to select a higher gear, leave the side splitter knob in Hi and select 5th gear.

    I use my Th8a shifter and I use gear 7 as my range selector so 1-6 the 7 to split then 7-12 the split then 13-18....it’s super fun and don’t need this adapter...just the Th8a 7 speed shifter does it all...I also get 3 reverse gears with this setup..it’s super fun. Love my Th8a
