    I don't think that back in the old days people were using an electronic kitchen scale to measure their plants in making tinctures.I also don't believe that 100 proof or higher alcohol was available either.And,without all these ,people still made their tincture and used them as medicine,and survived too.
    My grandmother just used the old fashion way of making it,with her homemade plum alcohol,which I don't think was any higher than 30% alcohol.

    • @TheFewellHomestead
      @TheFewellHomestead  4 года назад +3

      actually, they did have 100 proof. Most homemade alcohol is pretty high. And while I still eyeball a lot, if you're trying to make something specific, it's best to use measurements. You're right, they didn't have electronic scales, they had manual scales.

    • @anne8743
      @anne8743 4 года назад +3

      @@TheFewellHomestead I grew up in Eastern Europe, so no,we had no scales and definitely no 100 proof alcohol. I was raised on the farm where making alcohol was illegal. Some people still did it,made out of plums or something similar that can't be found in US.Making alcohol at home out of grains was not possible.The only high proof you could find was for pharmaceutical use (rubbing alcohol),not for human consumption. Also,most countries were under communist control, so there was no fancy alcohol in stores either.Yes,most people out there lived/live like that,me included.My grandparents didn't even own a fridge in 2000,nor a bathroom inside their home till this day.

    Herbal densities can be addressed by investing in an herbal press instead of buying a scale. Plants are going to compress approximately the same regardless of calendula, lavendar, etc.

    I have 5 grams of herb to tincture, but it is very fluffy even after grinding it. For a 1:10 ratio I would use 50ml of 80 proof vodka based on this formula, but that does not cover all of the herb, which is necessary. How would you solve this?

    Tinctures are best with fresh herbs or flowers due to the need to extract both the water soluble and alcohol soluble properties of the herb. Dried herbs do not have many water soluble properties left. 100 proof vodka is 50 percent water and 50 percent alcohol, so it works with both properties at once. You need that synergy for remedies. 80 proof vodka also works, but leave it a bit longer. Weighing herbs is important for making herbal infusions with dried herbs only.

    • @SnowAngelfish
      @SnowAngelfish 10 месяцев назад

      Not true at all. Teas, infusions etc all prove there is lots of water soluble properties in dried herbs,, the constituents are just more concentrated.

    Guys give the lady a break, I think you will find she uses the 5 / 1 ratio because it is the industry standard, so when you make it for personal / family consumption use the by eye method. But if you make it for other people then it gives them a way of getting a relatively consistent dosage, although with the different quality of herb used the type and strength of alcohol used you will never get exactly the same consistency from different suppliers, health wealth and happiness

      According to Kerry Bone in "A Clinical Guide to Blending Liquid Herbs" (GOOD book!) alcohol used for type of herb. (pg 4/ ISBN-10: 0-443-06632-9)
      25% alcohol/50 proof - water soluble constituents such as mucilage, tannin's, and some glycosides (including some flavonoids and a few saponins.
      45% to 60%/80 to 120 proof - Essential oils, alkaloids, most saponins, and some glycosides.

    Really good information Amy! I tend to eye ball everything but also base it on how dense the herbs are but also am more likely to use more of an herb than what is likely necessary so I can it as strong as possible. I suppose I should at least follow a proper ratio once in awhile rather than just winging it! hahaha!

      Rain Country I was just telling this to a friend the other day. Once you get use to weighing herbs, you begin to naturally know what the weight is simply by eye balling it. That's more than likely how the folk method came about, because it was common to automatically and instinctually know these things. But we don't instinctually know these things until we begin weighing them again 😜

    • @StarSphere222
      @StarSphere222 2 года назад +1

      Yes, this is what the ancients did for making this medicine and it's been passed down from generations and is very effective. This is why the folk method has been used for so long. These people were masters at herbal remedies and were not making the mistake of measuring every herb the same way. You can clearly tell the difference in weight between calendula and lavender. Modern medicine has always seeked to "fix" or tweak what's been effectively done for centuries.

    One fluid ounce of vodka weighs 0.817 ounces. Are you weighing the vodka or measuring fluid ounces. Also, if the recipe is given in the folk method, then it’s going to be inaccurate to attempt to complete it by weight.

    Hi, Amy I just made a sleepy tincture and used 5 oz of herbs and 25 oz of 80-proof vodka but... the liquid does not cover the top of the herbs. How is the vodka going to penetrate the herbs to infuse? Also, how do you feel about using wine and honey or other mediums to use for the "liquid"? Also, do you have an alcohol-free tincture? Just thinking about Kid friendly.

If you've handled herbs at all for any serious amount of time you know that some parts of herbs weigh more & or are denser than others. If you can make w:v tinctures do so, you will thank yourself for it. Get yourself a good tincture press too.

    Why do you weigh the alcohol? Using a ratio you are supposed to use milliliters for the alcohol. That way you can accurately dose (i.e. a 1:5 is one gram of dried herb to 5 milliliters) that way you can say every drop is a 10 mg dose. ( A dropper has .05 milliliters in 1 drop). it makes much more sense to do it this way. You don't weigh your tincture doses when you take them so why weigh it out when you're making it? Using your method you're putting about 28 grams of vodka for every gram of herb no wonder you need 30 drops to do anything. You're doing a 1:28 ratio (i.e. you need to drink a shot of vodka for every 1000mg of herb. No thanks.

    • @dwaynedaniels8140
      @dwaynedaniels8140 4 года назад +1

      Jerry, how do you come up with that 1:28 ratio?? Maybe I'm doing the math wrong but here's what I came up with.
      5 Ounces of Vodka for 1 ounce of herb, that's 2957 drops of Vodka for 28350 mg of herb. A ratio of 1 drop to 9.58mg of herb.

    You made an error around the four minute mark, stating that one should use 100 proof vodka with fresh herbs. I think you might’ve meant to say 100% alcohol, not 100 proof which is 50% alcohol. Everclear is traditionally used with fresh herbs. And while I would agree with much of what you have to say with ratios, there are several plants that the 1 to 5 ratio is not indicated. Some herbs are 1 to 3 or 1 to 4; that can get rather nitpicky after a while. Also, ratios are all well and good but you failed to take into account the plant itself. Some growing years, plants can be far stronger in other years for a weaker in their medicinal properties. Just like growing a tomato plant, some years produce large and robust tomatoes, other years produce next to nothing and spindly tomatoes. For most people making tinctures at home, The folk method is completely acceptable. And please, no, do not keep a tincture in a refrigerator. Just in a relatively cool dark place, like a basement.

    2) I have a Ninja, and I was wondering should I use it to liquify the herb and vodka together? If I can, should this be done before curing or after curing?
    Thanks again.

      It's recommended you take as much of the herb out of the liquid as you can, as the herb could go rancid. So I wouldn't recommend liquifying it. I would also not place them in the fridge.

    Great video Amy. Thank you. Inspired by your video I've started making my own tinctures.
    So far I've made 20 tinctures.(Siberian ginseng, thyme, ginko, rosemary, gotu kola, garlic, skullcap,
    ginger, curcuma, astragalus, bacopa, motherwort, withania somnifera, fenugreek, mucuna pruriens, licorice, reishi,
    holly basil, schisandra chinensis and rhodiola ).
    There is a lot of information about negative interactions with pharmaceutic drugs but zero information about
    interactions between tinctures themselves. Can I safely combine them together ?

    Is there any other way to measure dosage than in drops? 30 is a long count when dosing...Is there an alternative, or would you suggest dosing into a spoon for the count?

    I've been curious to know watching these videos... I've seen dropper that have measurements on them and are calibrated. Is there a a way to measure 30 drops when dosing? For example, a dropper I was looking has has measurements of .25, .50, .75, and 1 ml marks on them. Could 30 drops equal one of these marks, or would someone need to actually count out 30 drops? Thanks in advance! Great video on explaining things :D

      Each liquid has it's own viscosity based off of what all is in the liquid. When coming out of an eye dropper, this causes it to either come out faster or slower & in larger or smaller drops. The only way to get a proper dosage from an eye dropper is to literally measure it.

    Hey Amy, do you know if its possible to make tinctures with 74 proof alcohol? In Australia is very hard to get 80 proof

    • @TheFewellHomestead
      @TheFewellHomestead  4 года назад

      you can! It just doesn't last as long or extract as well. But honestly, it gets the job done

    • @aspensage3445
      @aspensage3445 4 года назад +3

      It should be at least 80 proof, if you have less than at least 40% alcohol, it has the potential to grow stuff you don't want growing as far as long term preservation.

      right. Its a weight to volume ratio. 1 ounce herb to 1 flounce liquid.

    I have a question. When using lightweight dried herbs, like the calendula or yarrow, using the 1:5 ratio, how do you get the alcohol to cover the herb? One ounce on yarrow almost fills a quart jar, but only 5 ounces of vodka doesn’t come close to covering it. I’m confused. 😟. Thanks for your help!

    How To Live In Harmony With Nature And Reduce Pollution
    1. Many Production Which We Do Not Need Actually For Human Beings Has To Be Stopped
    We manufacture so many products and it is creating pollution. So if we minimise our products, pollution would be less.
    We produce so many things which we do not need, like cold drinks, leather products, potato wafers, chips, fruit juices, chocolates, biscuits, pickles, ice creams, etc.
    Cold drinks, fruit juices, pickles, ice creams, etc. Should be cooked at home only.
    If we stopped producing this things which are not required for humans, so much pollution could be reduced.
    If we colour the clothes pollution occurs. So if we don't colour our clothes, the pollution resulting from colouring the clothes can be stopped. Let everything remain in natural colour.
    2. We Should Cook Foods In Its Natural Form
    We can cook rice and wheat in our homes and eat it. Rice and Wheat is produced in farms. Then it is packed and transported to big warehouses, then wholesalers buy from them and supply to retail shops.
    But if a manufacturing company makes bread from rice and wheat, then to make bread a manufacturing company has to be set up, machines and working staffs are needed. When a company is built many other things are also needed. Then at last a plastic pack is required to pack the breads.
    So if we start cooking eatable things in its natural form then we do not need many companies like bread manufacturing company, tomato ketchup, noodles, fruit jam, pizza, burger, etc., the things required for the company and the plastic pack, paper box pack and glass bottles. If done like this, so many companies will not be required and hence less pollution for the world.
    Also we could save our money like this. If you buy a packet of bread, it would cost you more money than if you cook wheat and rice in home.
    Previously before industrial revolution, we didn't have technology, but our foods were rich with nutrients. Now we have technology, but technology is polluting our foods and our foods are not rich with nutrients, and because of that also we have health problems.
    If this is done, then many jobs would be lost. For that many peoples should do farming and they should be given loans if they do not have enough money to start farming on their own.
    Food, Medicines, Surgeries and Education's should be made free to the world till the world settles down with farming. After that food, medicines, surgeries and education's should be stopped free to the world.
    Many people should study botany subject so that they have knowledge of plants and they should do farming.
    Is their any another solution, that humans won't lose jobs and also pollution would decrease. Humans have to take this step certainly instead of going on polluting the earth, making wildlife extinct and also mass extinctions of humans in future.
    3. Electricity Pollution
    We create electricity from many types of sources like coal, water, etc., but it creates pollution. If electricity created from windmill and solar energy then no pollution occurs in the creation process. But still to manufacture windmill and solar machines pollution would occur.
    As I previously said that if we shut down many manufacturing companies which are producing things which are not needed for humans, then the world would not require so much electricity. If less electricity required, then less pollution generated.
    4. Could We Stop Drinking Cow's and Buffalo's Milk
    Whatever vitamins and nutrients we get from milk, if we can get it from other eatable things, then we can stop drinking cow's and buffalo's milk. As milk has to be packed in glass bottles and plastic packs and then transported to places. All of this can be stopped.
    For infants whose mother's have died or mother's who cannot breast feed their infants, only for them cow's and buffalo's milk should be given. We use milk in tea and coffee. Instead of milk we must use lime with tea and coffee or just plain tea and coffee. A lime should be cut into a few pieces and cooked with tea and coffee or something else can be used instead of lime.
    5. How Much Should Be The World's Population
    Every place should have a single house. No buildings, everything ground floor. If we do this and the whole lands of our planet earth would be occupied one day with homes, farms, forests, schools, hospitals, etc., then we would come to know how much our planet earth can have maximum population.
    Once the population is determined, then we have to maintain that population. For example if our earth can have a population of 10 billion peoples, then when the population reaches 10 billion, then everyone should have only one child till the population reaches 9 billion peoples. As if we have only one child then the population decreases. When population is 9 billion peoples, then everyone should have 2 children's till the population reaches 10 billion peoples. After that again we should have only one child. In this way population can be maintained.

      She said its 1:5. The proof needs to be higher for roots and barks. 80 proof for most stuff,, 100 proof for roots/barks. Make Sure you grind every thing up well using like a coffee grinder.

      You should be using powdered herbs to make tinctures. Using powder allows the herb to come into contact with the menstruum as much as possible. Translation, it extracts better. It's best to use freshly powdered herbs.
