A easier way to get your straight sides is to make a snip and rip the fabric. This will give you the straightest cut. It will rip on the straight of grain. I recently started doing this with my backings and it speeds up the process tremendously. No guess work, it will be straight . Give it a try, I think you will be presently surprised. 🌸💕 opps guess I spoke to soon. 😉 you showed the ripping method

Thank you! It’s very helpful to understand the longarm process and WHY the batting and packing need to be larger. I will do my very best to get my quilter a nice square backing with any seams going the correct way 😁😁

You had me at just a minute in! Experience shows right away, and I appreciate your calm approach to a difficult dilemma, showing me that even I can do it. But everyone, watch until the end before sewing. She shows another technique that makes just as much sense.

What a great tutorial! I've had a longarm, strictly for myself, for about 12 years now. I don't use it but a few times a year, and without any local classes in our remote town, I've always had to figure this out on my own. I learned SO much here! Thank you SO much!

Great video! As someone who went through 1970's 'Home Ec' classes I could have told you about ripping to regain straight-of-grain and how you'd have needed to compensate across the opposite edge (if you weren't also doing the old-school manual grain straightening via physical stretching), haha. But your video is FABULOUS for younger sewists who never had that kind of schooling. In my 60's now I'm a total newb to the longarm world and so appreciative of this and other APQS videos. At least now I'm happy that tearing off the selvages prior to preparing backings hasn't been in vain...whew. Your video really helped explain why I had some 'slack' areas in my 120" backing when I loaded my very first longarm quilt experience on a Millie at the local shop where I'm thankful to be able to rent time to quilt some of my unfinished tops.

Great (and bold) video, Lauren. You just answered ALL my questions as to why my extra-wide backings are always wonky. Thanks so much! I am so envious of all those gorgeous threads on the back wall.

What would you do if you do not have salvage to match up.

Thank you. Does it matter what quilting pattern you use when putting things so straight? As long as you have no puckers. Just thinking about the rest of the process might affect the result.

This is a wonderful tutorial, If you pre-wash your fabrics do you do the ripping before or after?

I always prewash my backing fabric and it always seems to come out of the dryer all wonky. I’ve tried stretching it to straighten it up but that’s not entirely successful.
