I’m glad you picked up on the pervasive themes of death through her work - I feel it’s part of what makes Ocean Blvd almost feel like closing the loop. Lana has talked about a watershed moment for her in childhood was when she first learned that she, and everyone around her, would one day die. Honestly, the obsessive way she describes her childhood thoughts make me wonder if it wasn’t an early sign of an emotional disorder that went undiagnosed due to her growing up in an abusive household. a lot of these songs lean heavily on autobiography- Lana lived a rough life before she wrote this album. A suicide attempt, becoming a black out alcoholic and going through rehab all before graduating high school, she went on to major in metaphysics, and instead of going back home to live in her privileged childhood home, she chose to live in a trailer park with a guy who would eventually be sent to prison and die (meaning two of the men she loved when she was younger died). She was also living a really kinda scary life - she said she’d walk around at night and meet people and just “go with them”, whatever that means?? She said there were a few years where she didn’t have an ID or a social security card, she was just lost and wondering and even got involved with a weird sobriety cult with an abusive leader. This album is so weird and lovely and dark, it could really only have been made by her.
It's all very interesting, especially from a man's point of view so a somewhat 'outsider' lens perspective. Most interesting/thought-provoking for me is how there's a sort of "glamorisation" of these genuinely toxic, dark and dangerous elements of the lifestyle/world that Lana not manifests through her music, but has actually lived through in real life. Especially amongst younger women, there certainly appears a sense of fascination and allure to the "sad beauty" identity of being a Lana type figure and living such a lifestyle...bad boys, booze, drugs, living in the moment, rollercoaster of emotions, and so on. But of course, there's an undeniable level of risk attached to all that, and quite frankly Lana and the young women who engage in behaviour/lifestyle like that are playing with fire and rolling the dice as to whether they'll end up dead in some ditch somewhere, or in the back of a van. But I suspect to such people drawn to that identity and lifestyle...that level of risk is part of the allure to begin with. The thing with Lana, is that she is mostly self-aware about this, and admits that in her music. She knows what she was doing / the men she slept with her toxic, but she enjoyed the toxicity. My concern is that there are probably alot of young women who want to emulate this identity/lifestyle without such self-awareness and street smarts that Lana had, and will not be so resilient to the effects of it. My thoughts on the album and identity of it - regardless, Lana is the best female lyricist alive IMO. Ridiculous how so many straight men refrain from listening to her on the basis that her fandom/music is for 'gays' and for 'women'.
She didn’t write “Light of my life, Fire of my loins” it is a direct quote from the first line of the book Lolita by Nabakov. He is one of her favourite writes and she has his name tattooed on her (next to Whitman who is one of her other favourites) Born to Die is currently 71 on the Billboard 200 and is on its 483rd week on the charts. Only 18 albums have charted for longer.
This album was Lana’s noir period. Very cinematic, melancholy, and exaggerated, however, there’s a lot of truth sprinkled in. LDR has lived a crazy life, and at the start of her career, she felt she had to present her truth behind a persona in order to be accepted. You can see as she evolves that this persona is stripped away until you’re left with just Lana/Lizzy as she truly is.
I've seen probably 50 reactions to this album and this is my favourite reaction by far. You really understood the album so well for someone who's listening to it for the first time. I'm obsessed with your comments on every song, you were so good omg. I can't wait for Ultraviolence
I am 65,adore LDR and when this came out I think I was up at midnight to download it the day it hit.it remained my favorite Lana album until ocean Blvd.Elizabeth Grant is #1 now because she does not lower her standards or beliefs to suit the ""insiders" at record companies or some disgruntled fans, she wants to be free like she sings about in "Get free". she wants to be a wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend and she shows us herself and ourselves on every album, she implores us to look beyond sexual control and manipulation,to find what lies beyond because she wondered in 2013 "will you still love me,when I'm no longer young and beautiful" she is a modern master who brings a lot of soul to the table..Love your reactions..Kent in Ohio.
17:17 she is not irronic, you can see in all her song this kind of crazy love "fly or die" type of thing. She has a very specific typology of men and a unique view on love, thats why some would she is promoting abuse and toxic relationship. I think its actually in a dark way very beautiful
LOVE how much you loved Carmen! Such an underrated track of hers imo, it’s not mentioned much when people name their LDR favs-but it’s just so fantastic. The chorus gave me full-body chills the first time I heard it lmao, and I’m still hooked. Such an incredible song portraying such a tragic picture of someone. Great reaction in general tho, loved your insight! Subscribed! ☺️
I don't know if you were planning to jump into Ultraviolence next, but she released an EP called "Paradise" right after Born To Die and I think it's a must-listen! Very important in her discography and people tend to skip it without realizing it.
Im so excited for you to get into the lana journey shes definitely my favoirte and I like how you do refrences from her newest album to this album too ultraviolce is even better
Just when I thought I’ve seen all LDR reaction comes another 😭 makes me happy af. You dissected the lyrics very well and it was an amazing reaction. Can’t wait to see you react to more of her!
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite (maybe NFR?) but Ultraviolence is the album that got me into her music and a lot of people love that album. But I also really love her Lizzy Grant stuff, you should check it out it’s really unique
I totally LOVE your interpretations and the way you actually pay attention. I’m so excited for your next LDR reactions. Can’t wait for you to go into NFR. 😍❤️
Honeymoon is her best album and the best album ever created in the history of albums and I’m saying that as a long time Lana fan who hated Honeymoon at first but as I grew I understand the whole artistry and how that album completely belong in a museum.
I'm really enjoying your journey with her. You listened to the album that explains so much/ verifies so much before listening to everything she explained. I am here for it!
"This is giving me Great Gatsby" Well, shes part of the soundtrack of the movie with "Young and Beautiful" give it a try! And im so happy you are doing this a journey! Im loving your reactions
I just noticed that the rythm/drums in national anthem just sounds like the sound of fireworks during the chorus????? she is a geniusmy god. It's also interesting that we went from national anthem to dark paradise, like, the whole vibe shifted, and knowing that in the MV lana's bf die, and in dark paradise she literally sing about her dead bf..? In NA she is with her love, living fast and stuff, it sounds like life, and dark paradise she is without him,...this is so sad and she is a genius, Lana really does nothing by chance, everything makes so much sense...
So excited to watch you explore her discography!!! Ultraviolence and Honeymoon are my faves!!! Every piece of her work is a well developed, meticulously thought out concept and executed masterfully!!! A truly brilliant woman of our generation!!! Thanks for reacting to this!!!
Even though she sings a lot about dedicating everything to a love interest, I think the “you” she is referring to in “Radio” is her Lana persona. ❤️ Great reaction video! 🙏🏼❤️
With the new album and other songs on her previous album "Blue Banisters" she goes so in depth about her childhood and her past that really make me have a new appreciation for her early songs like "Carmen" or "This is What Makes Us Girls" since it gives those songs even more context of what Lana was actually going through. Also summertime sadness is a song about a dear friend of Lana who sadly commited suicide during summer, a lot of people think it's about a guy/relationship.
your reaction to born to die (song) makes a lot of sense. she is always contemplating about thing in life like meanings and stuff. she's actually a graduated philosopher so yeah lol
Next is Paradise, don't forget it before Ultraviolence, it's great one.. And most of the lyrics are autobiographical, but u also need to read between the lines + she likes to be satiric. And she often refence other songs, singers, art, books (in this album Lolita is reference to the book Lolita by Nabokov). And in Radio, when she sings about her life being sweet like cinnamon - so it's bittersweet.
Great album. How is Million Dollar Man not part of a James Bondish type movie. No Grammy? She knows how to paint a picture with her voice. My mind follows her lyrics like movie clips rolling through my mind .
Omg! You should react to Melanie Martinez!! I noticed you like lyrics and look in depth into them and Melanie has really deep and good lyrics that she writes. Start with her first album Crybaby, K-12, After School EP and finally her most recent piece of work PORTALS. Such a genius artist. Like honestly, give her a try and you’ll see. Sending love ! ❤
My favourite Lana album at the moment is Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, my fave song is Grandfather please stand upon the shoulders.... but i've had different favourites since starting to listen to more and more.
I would LOVE if you listened to her two albums before born to die! There’s AKA Lizzy Grant which comes before born to die, and Sirens under her pseudonym May Jailer which comes before AKA and from when she was a teen. I have a google drive with Sirens if you’d like it!!
As a teenager Lana had a realization that everyone she knew including her is destined to die. It freaked her out and she ran away from home to Manhattan for a few years dating older men and doing drugs with them until her parents found her and sent her to a boarding school. This whole album is based on that experience.
I made the connection between Aaron Greene dying and this song as well. In Dark Paradise she sings, "I'm lying in the ocean, singing your song" and Fingertips, "Pulled me up by my waist, long hair to the beach-side. I wanted to go out like you". A potential suicide attempt over losing her one true love?
I think somebody already mentioned this, but the Paradise EP (tacked onto the Paradise Edition of Born To Die) has 8 more songs (a couple are classics). The videos for "National Anthem" and "Ride", in particular, are fantastic and well worth checking out😊...Oh, and there's also the "Young And Beautiful" single (I think it might be her most streamed song)
Born To Die is Lana’s most popular album more than twice as popular than her second most popular album. I believe DUKTATUOB is her BEST album but only time will tell if it becomes her most popular.
If you haven’t heard would you be willing to do the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy album by Sarah McLachlan and Surfacing? She has some pretty dark and contemplating lyrics in her earlier albums. Aside from that they’re just timeless and have no skipable songs. Those two anyhow are just perfection. Afterglow is more mature, but amazing also. I’d love if you just just resting to Building a Mystery first and maybe the video too

What are your tops songs from this album? I'm finding that Lana's music usually take a few listens, but I end up obsessed with all her songs!
Carmen ❤
off to the racessss
Blue Jeans & Off to the Races.
Radio and Carmen but every song is amazing
Off to the races is top 3 in all of her discography for me

“Light of my life/fire of my loins” are quotes from the book Lolita. These themes heavily explored in this album
