    Every reaction to Cola sends me to an orbit 😭

  • @punish5r
    @punish5r Год назад +52

    context for cola: the man Lana was dating at the time was Scottish and he told Lana “You American girls walk around as if your pussy tasted like Coca-Cola, as if you’d wrap yourself into American flags to sleep.” So, I think this song is a very satirical response to that, and mostly just her having fun with stereotypes that were placed on her

  • @tesselate8nowait262
    @tesselate8nowait262 Год назад +84

    The song Cola is a satirical song about the American dream, consumerism, and the pursuit of stardom. It’s about the things a young woman might have to do if she wants a career in Hollywood, and how that might change a person. How you will always know you traded on your youth/beauty/soul in order to “make it”.

    I think Cola is one of Lana's few songs that are almost "full-on" satire, really supposed to be camp, sound fun, and that's basically it. It's not super deep and personal, and she doesn't relate too much because it's more like an extreme caricature. I'm really enjoying your reactions, Felisha. I like how you try to get her and even when she's being rather... peculiar, you don't really judge her too much - maybe because you know she's grown, and that there's different people with different tastes, going through different phases and different experiences in the world. You might say "well, not sure about that" and things like that but I think most people giving these albums a first listen these days tend to be harsher and that takes away the fun entirely (from listening to the album and from watching a reaction to it).

  • @tesselate8nowait262
    @tesselate8nowait262 Год назад +24

    Great reaction! You’re so intuitive with Lana’s music, and I appreciate how closely you look at the lyrics. Most people need a few listens to come to a satisfactory analysis, but you’re picking up the themes so quickly! I think you’re really going to enjoy Ultraviolence. It’s a bit more rock-based, and it’s a huge step for Lana in terms of experimenting with different sonic landscapes.

    i love how you analyse the songs! ❤ i also find it interesting how her singing style has changed over the years, in a few interviews shes said that in her early career she often got told that to differentiate herself from other pop singers she should sing in her lower range as its more unique. I love her music now and then but her deeper voice is so nostalgic

  • @angell1432
    @angell1432 Год назад +16

    she changed Harvey to “oh, hes in the sky” and she eventually said because of what came out she didn’t want to preform it live anymore. which i understand but the high note is so iconic, it will be missed ❤️

    My thoughts on Body Electric: I think you’re absolutely right about the pain she still carries over the boyfriend she lost, but I believe it’s only a component. It’s also about her pain and fears in general, and her coping mechanisms being her influences/dancing to distract or self-soothe. There are also allusions to Lana seeing a pattern laid out: you’re young, beautiful, famous; fame changes you, you become something you hate; taking your life because you can’t deal.
    Marilyn Monroe and Elvis died young. Heaven is her baby(desired destination), suicide is her father(the way you get there), opulence is the end(once you have everything, there’s nothing more to live for, especially if fame turns you into a damaged person).
    Lana was writing a lot about her new-found fame, and her fears surrounding who she could become. She saw herself becoming jaded, damaged by Hollywood, and she was confronting this possibility in the music.

    Really loving the in-depth reactions you give! If you decide to dive into her music videos at any point, I highly recommend doing the Ride music video as well as her short film Tropico. Tropico includes 3 songs: body electric, gods and monsters, & bel air and it is SO cinematic. Ride includes some poetry from her as well that really adds to the meaning of the song.

    The way I interpret “if I get a little prettier can I be your baby, you tell me life isn’t that hard”
    It’s a very pongient statement, if you step back.. because we usually can’t just get prettier but that’s the only thing that will make her good enough to be his, it just gives defeatist vibes, hopelessness vibes… the sadness of reality. And then when he notices that’s how she feels he says “life isn’t that hard” telling her to cheer up… he just doesn’t see it the way she does
