Genius is definitely not the best at interpreting Lana’s songs. I recommend going into each album with a completely blank slate and forming your own opinions! Loved the reaction, can’t wait for more!
Yeah, I think it's better to come up with the story for yourself. Even if it isn't what was intended, you still have that meaning for you to enjoy. And then later you can find out more if you want. I usually don't, I'd rather keep the story I have formed.
the author of Lolita was a victim of CSA so the book is very much written for you to hate the protagonist and be disgusted by him but Hollywood romanticized it and dressed it up as some sort of forbidden love when it was in fact meant to be a horror from the perspective of the monster.
@cassi6528 done reading all of Nabokov's work to recognize how he used absurdity to comedic effect? We are meant to laugh at the absurdity of Humbert's rationalizations as much as be horrified.
girls, lanas song may sound uncomfortable sometimes. she sings about abusive relationships a lot. and people tend to understand she's romantinzing but she's literally just speaking about her experiences. you'll see how mature she gets on the last albuns, it's incredible 😭 NFR is one of the best albuns ever made and after this one it's new world for her. ENJOY THE JOURNEY I'LL BE HERE WATCHING!
YES! I find her songs extremely empowering in the sense that she speaks about stuff that others don't dare to. She allows herself to be totally honest and vulnerable.
@@irazorn3712i think her stuff kind of shines a light on how impatient people are with victims as well.. given the reaction people tend to have to the subject matter and her (imo realistic) approach
Yeah I think once she said that she can be submissive in her relationships. Crazy how we loved that in 50 sahes of grey but saying she romanticises in her songs and it's negative.
omg yesss i'm so excited to see your journey, you have to do it chronologically, starting with: * Born To Die, then the 3 deluxe tracks ("Without You", "Lolita" and "Lucky Ones"), and i'm sad that you missed those :( * Paradise EP * Ultraviolence (and its deluxe tracks, including "Is This Happiness" and "Flipside") * Honeymoon * Lust For Life * NFR * Chemtarils * Blue Banisters * Ocean Blvd I hope you like this great path that you are about to go through, it is a very gratifying experience, an artist with good lyrics and complex melodies, a very chameleonic voice and a lot of meaning and intention of each sound and tone.
Don’t know if someone’s already said this, but in Off to the Races the line “light of my life, fire of my loins” is also the very first line in the book “Lolita”
Ugh! LADIES! You just made me so happy! 😭 Thank you for taking your time with the album and picking it apart. It was so nice to watch and listen.✨ Lana’s artistry and lyricism is sooo different and refreshing. I’m glad y’all enjoyed it! Looking forward to more! Maybe check out the music videos too! They’re a good time and some from this era she made herself 💛
I'm also new to Lana but to me, in radio, when she says "sweet like cinnamon" I think about the fact that cinnamon is actually quite bitter when on it's own. So life sweet like cinnamon means that it's actually a bitter life and the dream that she's living in (meaning the fame and all that) isn't so good in retrospective.
Cinnamon and the next lyric is "take me like a vitamin, 'cause my body's sweet with sugar venom" - another mixture of sweet and something bitter/dangerous.
Ok nerd with an English degree here, just have to jump in and comment on Lolita (the novel). It def does NOT condone the p*dophilic relationship. While it's told by the predator, it's framed as him pleading his case to a jury, and is meant to be an exploration of the psyche of someone delusional enough to think he can be in love with a 12 year old - and that she loves him back. He's an unreliable narrator, and you're meant to look past his framing of the situation and see how messed up it is, and how much damage it has done to Lolita, who is a victim of grooming. Actually highly recommend the book, it's a classic. Lana plays with the Lolita image in a way that makes it her own, while drawing on its vibe of the romanticisation of skeezy circumstances. Ok that's all, thanks for the reaction guys 😊
Listen to Off to the Races again with the Lolita reference in mind. You will notice that Lana's tone is different between the verses and chorus. In the verses, her voice is very nonchalant and emotionless as she talks about her "flat broke down life" and the things she is doing just to please the older man she is with (she almost sounds bored). In the chorus, her voice is lighter, sweeter because she is acting like a damsel in distress, again to please the older man. In a way, Lana is retelling Lolita's story as a clever young girl who manipulates the older man out of his money, instead of the victim that most people make Lolita out to be after reading the book.
I've never seen it that way at all, but interesting to see such a different perspective. I can't imagine sensing boredom in the intensity of this mutual relationship.
My fav on this track is Dark Paradise 💯 That part when she said “except in my dream tonight” and the instrumental changed to upbeats happy dream-like sound is just *chef’s kiss* (bcs she’s happy to get to see him in the dream) ❤
Yes if you are a Taylor Stan (I am as well but starting at POP Taylor 1989 till now) then Lana is a must. Her & Taylor are great friends cause SONG WRITERS!!! She is my fav artist of all time. All her albums are timeless & get better with age & more listens. BTD, NFR, UV, HM, DYKTATUOB are superior…..the rest are good. Lana is just a NO SKIP artist
Video games was the first single that came out, and in the 2010’s hyper pop was super popular, but when the video game mv came out people were shocked and fell in love. People were so excited for her album and usually albums disappoint after a popular single comes out but for her first album everyone LOVED it, and she’s the first female artist for every song on an album to have over 100 mill streams (born to die). She’s also the 3rd female artist to have an album on billboard 200 for 300 weeks and the 2nd female artist to have an album on billboard 200 for over 400 weeks. The album currently is almost at 500 weeks. It’s insane how much born to die achieved, great album
I’d also add that she grew a large following after the release of this album but critics RAILED her in reviews because of it. Today, it is considered one of the greatest albums of the decade. It has aged tremendously well and some critics have walked back their extreme criticism of it.
The deepest part of Lana is her representing all of the broken youth and young adults growing into something whole again. She didn’t glamorize it… she was just glamorous… she reflected how we wore our brokenness as a crown of jewels as to not be judged by society at large. If you grew up without trauma, count your blessings that you haven’t become a brilliant artist bc of it. Trauma birth artists… been this way since time immemorial. I’m so proud of Lana and myself for growing up and out the trauma. She validated me. I’m 38 now. I have followed her growth along with her. My reason for loving Lana now is much deeper than the vintage modern audio and visual aesthetic that I fell in love with when I was younger. I love that y’all seem bubbly and superficial but have executed perfectly breaking down the lyrics. I’m jealous that BTD will be on your summer playlist lol
Btw, Lana had alcohol and drugs addiction and was sent to boarding school at 14 to get sorber. At 14, thats so sad. At 15/16 she went off, but her mom didn't allowed her to come back home and sent her to live with a family in Spain, she was literally at the airplane and was her 16 birthday, and someone brought her a little cake with "sweet sixteen" written on it, as she though "ok, that's sweet, but.. Will I ever be able to come back home?" after that, she never had a good relation with her mother.
I love the depth of the analysis you girls went through so easily. I've been listening to this album for 10 years and I did not hear/realize some stuff you noticed. This is what I call a good reaction! Thank you! You should give a listen to the Paradise edition of this album.
When Lana was a teenager she had a panic attack when she realized everyone is doomed to die so she started drinking alcohol and was eventually sent to a boarding school. That's what born to die is about and it dictated her musical style and lyrics.
Lana is the artist of this generation, the greatest living songwriter who debuted this century, one of the greatest and most diverse music catalogue of all time
Hi, so one take that I've seen on Born to Die's Off to the Races, Carmen (and the song Lolita from the Deluxe edition) is that they're all songs written based on Nabokov's novel, Lolita - but from Dolores' perspective. Carmen in particular is a song they sing together in the book, and there's a double meaning referencing both Lana's personal alcoholism but it's through the metaphor of the abuse and exploitation Dolores experiences in Lolita. I've also seen it mentioned that "Carmen" is a prophecy of Lana if she didn't get her drinking under control, mirroring the "prophecy" aka foreshadowing that the song Carmen in Lolita brings to the story (referring to a novella of the same name by Merimée which inspired Bizet's opera). There are so many literary and cultural references in this album, that with every listen there's another way to interpret her music and it never gets boring!
Definitely should check out the music videos from this era! Gives you an introduction into her vibes and how influential her aesthetic is! Loved this vid!
I am HERE for your lana journey girlies!! Just a suggestion, don't take what you read in genius as the only truth as it can often be off. You can use it as a guide but follow your own interpretation. ❤️ and I highly suggest you to watch the National Anthem music video
It's wonderful to see how Lana influeced other artists with this album back in 2012 and now. (If u look closely to TS 1989, u can found some inspiration 😅. Also think this was a reason for snow on the beach). And Having people actually understanding that lana was young and was reflecting about her youth (crazy as f.) On this album, and not taking everything literally was ❤. That's why I also love TIWMUGirls, it shows us that she was leaving her teenager era and reflecting about her persona as an artist, as a woman, ready to grow and learn with all that painful part of her life.
That part kills me everytime: "They were the only friends I ever had We got into trouble and when stuff got bad I got sent away, I was wavin' on the train platform Cryin' 'cause I know I'm never comin' back" It must had been souch a "trauma" for a young girl, but at the same time, it was the moment that Lana was able to be an artist, and realized she would never come back to that old reality. (Ps: my interpretation)
She puts out very few high end music videos now, but born to die has so many good ones and perfectly explain and fit the album. If you cant react on the channel, watch them yourselves!
good luck and godspeed on your lana journey! make sure you dont skip over the Paradise ep before jumping into her next album! it earns its own little place in her discography! its one of her best sounds, its sonically similar to BTD but different enough that it offers a softer transition into her even darker blues and jazz inspired album Ultraviolence. Paradise even has its own visual content; Ride video has monologues that are life changing, Blue Velvet was featured in an H&M commercial and it became the unofficial music video, great aesthetics! then there's Tropico which she created herself and of course stars in, its a short film featuring 3 of her songs and spoken word voiceovers by lana. it tells a cohesive story in its own del way, but there's a lot of metaphors and allusions, but gorge to watch nonetheless its a great era that gives us everything with so few songs. I love watching these, can't wait! ❣
The right way to react to this masterpiece!! I love how deep you went with the lyrics and details in the melodies and her voice. So glad you enjoyed and hope you continue your Lana journey, it's a wilddd ride. 🙌🏼
Idk where that genius annotation for the idea of chronological relationships -those three songs are about different ones but not from newest to oldest. Video Games was actually written about her boyfriend from around 2009-10
Love this reaction so much. Can not wait for your next lana reaction 😫 Also I wanna say that do not trust genius all the time. Trust YOUR instincts and your interpretation. We would love to hear about it. Also I’m sure some one will definitely give u insight in the comments about new perspective.
Loved the picture of the two of you before diving into Lana’s first album. Ultraviolence is a total different mood…. Honey, you got a big storm coming 😁
I will agree with you, Lana del reys songs feel cinematic and are like a small film. The music videos for this songs are also like watching a film. Watching the videos and listening to the songs enhances the experience.
Loved your reaction!! It’s so fun watching you experience Lana for the first time. Little disappointed you missed out on the 3 deluxe tracks from this album, they are great too!!
I’m so glad I discovered you guys, will definitely be subscribing for next updates on Lana reactions, you guys are great thank you so much for doing what you do
I wasn’t a fan of Lana at first until going through her lyrics. She is truly talented and one of a kind. I can’t wait to see your journey through her albums. But take time in between each one so you can sit with each! Don’t rush through and overload yourself!
just subbed because you are doing lana, you were suggested to me because i love lana lol, can't wait to go on this journey with you, lana is like no one else x
The music video of National Anthem stars A$AP Rocky as JFK and Lana as both Marilyn and Jackie. The video begins with her singing Happy birthday Mr President and ends with her saying a poem she wrote from Jackie's perspective
if you've seen once upon a time in hollywood, the girls that were living together in like a community give me such Carmen and this is what makes us girls vibes, and Lana was really thinking of that.
There's just something so satisfying about people reacting to a Lana album for the first time. It's as close as I can get to listening to it for the frist time again
@@thegirlsathome this video made me so happy! so glad you girls enjoyed the album, pls we NEED a reaction for the music videos from this era too 😭😭 specially National Anthem and Summertime Sadness (to get the real meaning of the song). Sending you lots of love 🤍🫶🏼
The question about whether it won awards made me chuckle a bit - the album was nearly universally ripped to shreds. Go and read Pitchfork’s first review of it (they later apologized for it). When it came out, our generation had a lot of optimism and hope about the world, and many people saw a young girl singing about wanting to die as fake. The meme was that her whole persona was a fake act, because no young woman could have such deep and meaningful thoughts. No, it did not win any awards! Lana was largely snubbed until NFR.
summertime sadness is actually about Lana's best friend who died from suicide and she says that in the lyrics "Think I'll miss you forever Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky Later's better than never Even if you're gone, I'm gonna drive (drive), drive"
Omg really loved this reaction! Ultraviolence album will be awesome if yall reacted to it next but if yall are in order then Paradise EP is the next one
Just found your channel with this video. Lana and Taylor are two of my favorites artitsts ever, so I already love that about you. And I love how much you dissect the songs and talk about the meaning. Definitely subscribing and checking out more of your videos. Can't wait to see your journey through Lana's music. She's similar to Taylor in that the writing is her first priority.
I really hope you guys will listen to deluxe/bonus tracks from each album cause they're some of my favorite songs in her discography ❤ so happy I discovered your channel today, definitely subscribing 🥺
Im glad y’all read about the song before listening, a lot of people listen without really thinking about the lyrics at all. This album gets 100x times better when you get the lyrics
Obsessed with this review, she’s truly a lyrical genius. My fav album changes month to month. On first listen, some I’m like humm, it’s okay. Then fave album the next week. Pure poetry. Can’t wait to watch your journey xx
@The Girls at Home Great reaction, girls!😊 Looking forward to following your Lana journey. I'm a newbie, too. Just quite as newbie. Lana's brilliant, brilliant, brilliant (You're probably aware that Taylor worships her). She often references other songs (as well as poetry, literature, and film) in her own songs. The "One for the money, Two for the show" line in "Million Dollar Man" is from Elvis Presley's "Blude Suede Shoes" (Subscribed😊)
Subscribing to watch your Lana jourrney. It's always so cool to watch people listening to my favourite music for the first time and I often find myself noticing or learning new things when doing so. For example, after nearly a decade of listening to Lana, I'd never made the connection between Diet Mountain Dew and "you're no good for me, but baby I want you."
Just want to say, I appreciate the way you guys edit the songs. I can tell you TRY haha. Big props and can’t wait for the subsequent videos/albums reviews.
Hi. I’m a big Lana Del Rey fan and was brought to you your A&W reaction by RUclips. I thought you did a great job but it was impossibly crazy to jump in to Lana with that song. I’m really glad you are doing these videos now. I’m a little jealous that you will be listening to the rest of her albums for the first time, but I’m really looking forward to your reactions to the evolution of her songwriting. Bear in mind that she didn’t like the “pop” production of Born to die. It was forced on her late. The rest of her albums are how she wanted you to hear them. Enjoy.
I work from home and watch/listen to videos every day while I work, and this was so much fun!! I’m here for the Lana journey if you’re taking it! She is just the best. 🥰
Video games is definitely not what genius says, lana said in an interview video games is actually a happy song where she was in college dating a guy who would come back from work to play video games and she just enjoyed his company.
Fantastic reaction! It is always so good to hear people's interpretations of her music! I would suggest throwing the 3 bonus tracks into the same video as the Paradise edit in the future, people will love to see you work out her lyrics, and trust me; all the extra songs are quite something to analyze.
one of my favorite things is to watch people discovering Lana's work for the first time. definetely gonna watch your journey! the next work for you guys to listen to is her BTD - Paradise Edition. in it there are a lot of other songs from the BTD era, like "Without you" and "Lolita" from BTD and all the iconic songs from the "Paradise EP" like "Body electric", "American" etc. ENJOY!!!!

Cryin' 'cause I know I'm never comin' back"
It must had been souch a "trauma" for a young girl, but at the same time, it was the moment that Lana was able to be an artist, and realized she would never come back to that old reality. (Ps: my interpretation)
also please listen to the songs you missed from the deluxe version of this album! without you, lucky ones and lolita!
we definitely will!
Can’t wait until you guys finally enter the ULTRAVIOLENCE album era. That album changes my life foreverr!!!!!!
YESSSS ESPECIALLY “PRETTY WHEN YOU CRY”
She puts out very few high end music videos now, but born to die has so many good ones and perfectly explain and fit the album. If you cant react on the channel, watch them yourselves!
the National Anthem video is perfection 😍
good luck and godspeed on your lana journey!
make sure you dont skip over the Paradise ep before jumping into her next album! it earns its own little place in her discography! its one of her best sounds, its sonically similar to BTD but different enough that it offers a softer transition into her even darker blues and jazz inspired album Ultraviolence. Paradise even has its own visual content; Ride video has monologues that are life changing, Blue Velvet was featured in an H&M commercial and it became the unofficial music video, great aesthetics! then there's Tropico which she created herself and of course stars in, its a short film featuring 3 of her songs and spoken word voiceovers by lana. it tells a cohesive story in its own del way, but there's a lot of metaphors and allusions, but gorge to watch nonetheless
its a great era that gives us everything with so few songs.
Although this album does deal with some themes from her teenage years (mainly This Is What…), it’s largely about her relationships beyond 20
I’m so glad I discovered you guys, will definitely be subscribing for next updates on Lana reactions, you guys are great thank you so much for doing what you do
don't sleep on the Deluxe versions or the Paradise EP, they're all worth it 👑😍
I wasn’t a fan of Lana at first until going through her lyrics. She is truly talented and one of a kind.
I can’t wait to see your journey through her albums. But take time in between each one so you can sit with each! Don’t rush through and overload yourself!
just subbed because you are doing lana, you were suggested to me because i love lana lol, can't wait to go on this journey with you, lana is like no one else x
yay thank you!!
since you watch succession, i think you'll understand when i say national anthem is such a kendall roy coded song lol
so many lana songs are succession coded and i love it
WOW LOVE
The music videos from this album are so good!! I’m excited for your Lana journey! ♥️
The music video of National Anthem stars A$AP Rocky as JFK and Lana as both Marilyn and Jackie.
The video begins with her singing Happy birthday Mr President and ends with her saying a poem she wrote from Jackie's perspective
Lana makes great music videos too. It's so worth it to react to them. Especially the national anthem and ride from the next album
i love the intro so much. you girls are meant to be lana stans. so happy i stumbled upon y'all
if you've seen once upon a time in hollywood, the girls that were living together in like a community give me such Carmen and this is what makes us girls vibes, and Lana was really thinking of that.
I love ur guys interpretations of the songs! It’s so fun I feel like I’m relistening and finding new details!
There's just something so satisfying about people reacting to a Lana album for the first time. It's as close as I can get to listening to it for the frist time again
Ya'll's energy is just so uplifting and amazing to see
That was a great reaction!! always good to see people getting to know Lana! ready for this journey!
this album really changed my life back in 2012, will take this for life
yesss. start from the beginning and just enjoy the ride.
id do anything to hear lana for the first time again. y’all are lucky. so enjoy it
Listening to this album on an open road with your hand out the window, like you mentioned, is The Best!
national anthem music video is literal ART! short film masterpiece!! incredible monologue at the end!
I will watch every lana review, loved you two!!!!
OH MY GOD, the notification I’ve been waiting for 😭😭😭😭
thank you for patiently waiting!!! 😭
Great reaction! Please don’t take Genius literally :) I have never imagined Video games beeing set in middle school, it ruins the vibes totally…
I love old Lana 😍I'm not a fan of her newer albums but the vibes on her first few are impeccable; Born To Die is definitely my favorite!
AYYYY NEW LANA REACTORS??!!!
Yessssssssssssssssss!!! I'm here for the lana journey!!!!
this is just such a monumental album, not only in my life but in the industry as a whole! thanks for listening 🥰
summertime sadness is actually about Lana's best friend who died from suicide and she says that in the lyrics
"Think I'll miss you forever
Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky
Later's better than never
Even if you're gone, I'm gonna drive (drive), drive"
This rraction actually was so good and I have never watched you guys before but I will subscribe now
Y’all should give the bonus tracks a listen too ✨
Yes you two did amazing breaking down her poetry. Would love to hear your reaction to NFR.
Omg really loved this reaction! Ultraviolence album will be awesome if yall reacted to it next but if yall are in order then Paradise EP is the next one
I just found you guy’s channel and I’m already so excited for your lana journey! lana’s lyrics and melodies only get better 😭
Im excited bc the only Lana song i know is snow on the beach feat. Lana 😂
Yayyy I love Lana I can’t wait to watch your journey 💓💓
I really hope you guys will listen to deluxe/bonus tracks from each album cause they're some of my favorite songs in her discography ❤
so happy I discovered your channel today, definitely subscribing 🥺
Young and Beautiful is a single she did for the Great Gatsby movie soundtrack
Im glad y’all read about the song before listening, a lot of people listen without really thinking about the lyrics at all. This album gets 100x times better when you get the lyrics
please do all of her albums. she literally doesn’t make a bad song.
that's the plan!
Obsessed with this review, she’s truly a lyrical genius. My fav album changes month to month. On first listen, some I’m like humm, it’s okay. Then fave album the next week. Pure poetry. Can’t wait to watch your journey xx
Es que escuchar a Lana simplemente es todo una experiencia ♥️😍
Enjoy.
i can’t wait to go with you on this journey! lana is phenomenal. great video as always!
This is what i’ve been waiting for! Love you❤
HAVENT STARTED THE VIDEO BUT IM COMMENTING COZ IM SO EXCITED Y'ALL REACTING TO LANA ALBUM!!! Yoohooo lemme grab my earphones and watch the video 🤠🌟
Fantastic reaction! It is always so good to hear people's interpretations of her music! I would suggest throwing the 3 bonus tracks into the same video as the Paradise edit in the future, people will love to see you work out her lyrics, and trust me; all the extra songs are quite something to analyze.
girls please drop the ultraviolence reaction there's pepople that are dying!!
SHE CHANGED MY LIFE ❤
ALSOOO, PLEASE SEE THE MILLION DOLLAR MEN LIVE
at Hackney Weekend and Eurockéennes, you're gonna be pleasently suprised
one of my favorite things is to watch people discovering Lana's work for the first time. definetely gonna watch your journey!
the next work for you guys to listen to is her BTD - Paradise Edition. in it there are a lot of other songs from the BTD era, like "Without you" and "Lolita" from BTD and all the iconic songs from the "Paradise EP" like "Body electric", "American" etc. ENJOY!!!!
Can't wait for the next album reactionssss!!
