Scary how y'all understood the album as a long story of who Lana is. I'd like to just say tho that she isn't really playing much of a character, she was a troubled youth that was sent to rehab and a boarding school to get straightened up, it wasn't just alcohol but also drugs, but she doesn't openly talk about it cause the public is very critical about drug abuse, like lindsay lohan, amy winehouse, amanda bynes etc. Her usic most likely would've been over shadowed by her past, she sings about "K" her drug puahing boyfriend that went to jail and might've died there, they were 2 against the world and she had given up on being a star. She's lived in a trailer park as a starving artist with a bad record deal till her manager got her out of it. She's been the decades most influential woman by paving the way for Lorde (A Lana sound but isn't opulent) Halsey (The pop edm Lana) Billie Eillish (The Dark pop) Taylor swift even mentions Lana oftenly as her inspiration Ex. 1989 and her recent works that directly mirrors Lana, they've been awesome.
Lana Del Rey is probably my all-time favorite artist. Her music is so timeless and grandiose, I never get tired of listening to her, and her voice and overall sound/aesthetic is entirely unique to her. It's amazing to me that she isn't more recognized! She and Lorde defined my entire teenage experience

Paradise is a must Off to the Races is based off the book Lolita by Nabakov about a relationship between a man and an underage girl. The line “Light of my life, Fire of my loins” is a direct quote from the first line. Lana has Nabakov and Whitman tattooed on her arm as they are her favourite writers.
She literally birthed this sound that many artists like Lorde and new era Taylor ended trying to duplicate. At the time, no one sounded like her. That hip hop beat she ended up dropping (and later picking back up for Lust For Life) because she was so upset with people copying her sound.
Your insight on “diet mountain dew” and “radio” had me seeing a whole new perspective after all these years listening to this album 😂 I love how y’all break down her lyrics
that high pitched voice it's not an effect, she just like to change her tone for specific songs, the husky dark tone it's most used in her early work and moody song, but the high, girly and innocent voice it's to convey a luring and femme fatale message, in recent work she uses her normal tone, but also here and there other tones, she just really like to change her voice and accent, amazing range but a little underveloped technique, she's my favorite artist of all time, keep the reactions :)
Paradise elevates Born to Die. The first Lana album I bought was the Born to Die - Paradise Edition that combined Born to Die and Paradise. They pair perfectly together and elevate the experience. Some of my favorite Lana songs to this day are on Paradise. Ride and Gods & Monsters are 🤌🏻. Hope you listen to Paradise.
This album was my life in HighSchool, Lana has always been my go to when it came to music. She also reminds me a lot of Marina and the Diamonds: Electric Heart was my JAM!! Both artists gave me memories I still hold onto as an adult today. Please do Ultraviolence next!! 🖤
i LOVE how you both noticed all the ways she ties the songs together. it's definitely a visual/concept album, she has such a special way of making every single song cohesive to the overall vibe. can't wait for you guys to react to ultraviolence & honeymoon !!! 💜
Loved this reaction! I also loved that you started from the beginning, there's a growth and a journey she goes on throughout her discography that is beautiful to listen to and experience. Check out the bonus tracks Without You, Lolita and Lucky Ones too if you get a chance, you can tell they are bonus tracks but still worth listening to. Then you have to do the Paradise EP next, she's fully in her bag, as far as this sound and aesthetic goes. My top fav from this album are Off To The Races, Dark Paradise, This is What Makes Us Girls, National Anthem, and Video Games. So excited for you guys to deep dive into Lana's work!
He’s not a “gangster” he’s primarily a Cuban. 💯 which interwinds with everything she’s been saying. “ he’s crazy y cubano como yo”- Lana del Rey- west coast 💜 🇨🇺
This was suuuuuch a good reaction. I loved how you both picked up on the nuances in the lyrics, the deeper meanings, and the connections between the songs. I recommend watching some of the music videos from this album they really take the stories to a new level! Also you should definitely go through the rest of her discography - do it in order, it’s best to show her progression and growth throughout the years. ❤
Not many grew up depressed! I used to go to her concerts in 2010 and they were never super crowded! It took people 15 plus years to find who she is, many slept on lana deal rey😢😢
The way ya'll understood this album after one listen is super impressive! I can see Lana stans in the making right here sooo excited for you to listen to her following albums! Lana is a genius
Loved this reaction!! I highly recommend reacting to the music videos of the Born to Die era. They really help to drive the overall aesthetic/vibe of the album.
Fucking WISH I hadn’t heard anything from her yet. Guys her discography is outstanding and gets better I can’t wait to see you guys react! already KNOW you’re gonna love Lust for Life
You guys haveeee to react to norman f*cking rockwell because its for sure her best album. You guys would probably like Lust for Life too because its has a lot of interesting features and is her most hip hop influenced album. Great reaction btw!
Please listen to the deluxe version of these albums, Without You and Black Beauty are two are of my favorite tracks from Lana and they are bonus tracks! :)
Off to the races is a romanticization of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. She does the siren's calling of this "seductive" child that the main character portrayed to "the jury" in order to gain sympathy. "Light of my life, fire of my loins" is the opening line of the book. However, I think Lana adapted it to the sugar baby aesthetic, like you said, which is really clever. Loved your reaction, I hope you didn't mind my explanation c:

Both ladies refer to themselves are songwriters first (brilliant they are) and vocalists second. However, Lana is influential in so many ways and many artists know of her/copy her but dont giver her her flowers.

Off to the races will make more sense when u know that “light of my life fire of my loins” is the opening line of the book Lolita. In the deluxe version of BTD she has a song named after it. Carmen also is a reference to Lolita, she’s the popstar Lolita looked up to. Diet Mountain Dew she references Lolita’s heart shaped glasses.
I‘m so excited to see you reacting to her discography! I also just started listening to her last summer and am devastated that I slept on her like that 🥲
I really liked your reaction, very smart and genuine! Born to die never fail to amaze me, it still sounds so good, the quality is insane, the lyrics and construction, orchestration, to me it's a perfect album, because it's cohesive, it makes sense, she sings about her own experience but it resonate easily with everybody...The more i listen to it, the more i find depth in it.
