Subaru Forester Camper Build: Scary Solo Road Trip Ahead

  • I'm heading for a few-month-long female solo road trip in my 2008 Subaru Forester XT Sports Utility with manual transmission ‪@Subaru‬ which I converted into a car camper completely by myself. In the video I show my DYI setup for a small SUV: a removable sleeping platform and storage units, and talk how I managed to build it in New York City without owning any tools.

    Cool build. A tire plug kit and decent quality air compressor might be a good option if you can afford it. It would allow you to fix a puncture without having to remove the tire from the car and you wouldn't be stuck running the temporary spare donut tire. Safe and happy travels.

    Great build. One hint. When using bungee chord (elastic) I’ve found it helps to tie a knot at the end so the toggle stoppers don’t come off. I use them a lot for my home made outer wear (fleece jackets etc).

    I have an '06 N/A that I think about building out.. I love the size and fuel mileage compared to my van 😅as you mention the stealth is nice especially in my old lady spec foz, just a bit more cramped than I can handle long term.

      @ashaslaw  Год назад +1

      Thank you! To be honest I was a bit worried that I will feel too cramped in my Forester but it actually feels perfect! Probably would be different in winter... But I also don't carry too many things with me - only gear I use on a daily basis. Summing up - if I were you, I'd totally give it a try! :) Good luck!

      @@ashaslaw You have a good setup and made really good use of space! and once you are on the road you realize how little you really need day to day. Just need that 6 foot of horizontal space for sleeping and some storage really.... I have slept in my forester a few times on the passenger side, but even with the seat fully up it is a bit tight at 5'11" 😅
      I already built out my van and based my channel around it but I am attached to the forester! and will gain inspiration from you in the event I sell the gas guzzler, the funny part is the forester is better off road then my 4x4 van 🤣They are awesome vehicles!

    Hope to construct a similar build inside my 2017 Forester. Thank you for your tour and your ideas.
    Two questions: Since you did some backcountry camping on your travels, did you upgrade the stock tires on your Subbie?
    If not, do you feel the stock tires performed well enough to your liking?
    Best wishes on your travels "down under".

      This vehicle is unique, so it is really difficult to get. Old Subarus also rust really fast, so buying it on the East Coast wasn't an option. I dived deeper into this topic in one of my videos (the one with views of Glacier NP), so feel free to watch it if you need more explanation :)
      Regarding your second question - I simply don't need more storage.

    • @ashaslaw
      @ashaslaw  5 месяцев назад

      Of course! There are many reasons why I decided to buy this particular model, including the fact that this car is considered a Unicorn. There were also many practical reasons to it, i.e. I find older Subarus really reliable.

    I am glad I found this channel! Very well thought out and constructed Asha! It looks like you have worked with wood before. One never gets things 100% the first time. It will take a few trips to have it set up to how you like it. Even then, you will see things or go in different environments and will want to make minor adjustments to your setup to suit. The challenge is to make sure you do not go overboard and have so many ideas or whatever that causes you to change to a bigger vehicle unnecessarily.
