Stoked that you'll be putting out content for the '17 Forester. Out of all the Subarus I've owned this is my favorite one. Doing my front passenger CV axle today at 180k miles. Bought it at 160k
This is almost identical to my 2014 Forester. I’m kinda stoked to follow the progress. I “had” to replace my CVT as well, was not aware that something else could have been the problem (although my mechanic who I trust pretty well didn’t seem thrilled about having to do the work - found an old new one rather than a used one, so yeah… it was the most I’ve ever dropped on a vehicle repair. Naturally it failed just after the warranty ran out. Now it’s throwing catalytic converter codes, allegedly - and something is up causing the cruise control not to work (I suspect vacuum stuff?) and intermittently says the dynamics control needs to be checked. When in that condition it gets poor mileage. I would like to keep the vehicle, since the market is still pretty terrible for pricing - and having spent the $$$ on the CVT… am learning from you quite a lot but don’t have a ton of mechanic experience nor proper tools for anything but really basic stuff (I did replace the turn signal stalk myself, LOL)
If you’re seeing catalytic converter codes, that will disable cruise control. It’s probably intermittent(?), like, only when the Check Engine light comes on? At least this is the case with mine…
My outback has a broken abs sensor so I have the anti skid light on, parking brake flashes and ABS light on. Cruise control will not function with out without CEL as it comes on and off as it feels like it. I love my Subaru this way though as I can drift it all winter long without a computer locking my wheels and making the car another boring steel box to drive. Its just a 2.5 NA EJ253 engine with 6speed transmission but I have such a blast and cheap to keep going.
@@willconklin7739 mine was at 113K if I recall correctly and failed in September of 2022 - bought it in April of 2013. There was no “ten years or” part to the warranty. Just 100K miles
Definitely a good deal for that Forester. That said, if it were mine and I were planning to flip it I would NOT get OEM Subaru parts for some of that. You could save at least $1000 on the cat, shocks, tie rod end, and wheel bearing, nor would I put in leather. There's just too many miles on it. Then again to get top dollar it might make sense. I'm looking forward to all the videos coming up!
Looking forward to this series as it's a similar vintage to my Impreza. Buy price is very reasonable. You cant buy them that cheap down here (Australia), even with that high mileage.
Looking forward to this series. There seems to be something new on with my 2014 Forester (117k mi) every couple months, so looking forward to gleaning as much as I can from it.
Great stuff as always. I'm eager to dive into the content on this Forrester. Gotta say, man, I don't get the hate with the oil plan drain valve. It makes oil changes a breeze and there's no mess.
I love my fumoto valves, too. I am not sure the hate either, only thing I can think of, is the not having a magnet for forbidden glitter. I collect my used oil and inspect it for such things. It's not just for ease of changes, it's to save on the oil pan thread life, and keep from having to hunt down crush washers.
I have an 02 wrx and a 97 outback. I fix em up and hold on to them. At one point i thought about flipping Subarus but I like old ones that need a lot and I dont really think about selling them. The wagon maybe. Replaced the motor with an updated jdm 2.5 shortblock and found some less worn ej25d heads out of a early forester.
Bottom line you are saving big time on the labor. For you as a mechanic it is a awesome deal plus all the views are great, that is extra 💰. From SoCal driving a 2015 Outback.
I recently purchased a really clean 2013 Forester Limited with 86k miles and blown motor for $2,800. A replacement engine is about $2,300 and with another $1,000 in cleaning, maintenance, and unexpected repairs, hoping to make a little bit on the flip. Will be going through this series to make sure I don't overlook anything important. Cheers!
Dear Mr Subaru, I want to thank you for all your knowledge, I discovered you swipping shorts on Facebook, the one I saw was when you explained the scam of some ratchets from a very well known RUclipsr, in that time I was looking to replace my car for a Jeep grand Cherokee, and it that time I had no idea about Subarus unless they were rally cars. Long story short, started watching your videos and said "hey! lets make a test drive for the Outback", and guess what, I'm waiting for December to pick up my 2023 Outback. Thank you again. (sorry if my english it's no so good) Greetings from México.
Seems like a great deal. Excited for some forester content! Our 2016 forester has 135k, hopefully the CVT lasts a while. Just added an external cooler because it would pop the AT TEMP light on long summer road trips in the southwest. Otherwise it's been a flawless car. Well, except for the dealership not bothering to clean the battery posts.
$3k is a very good price. The lack of corrosion on that car gives me a little bit of a sad (I just was under my '11 Outback yesterday - sad face). I'll be interested in seeing the clockspring inspection and what you find with that P0420 code. Another great video.
People need to grease their cars in the rust belt.. You need a barrier between the frame (metal) and oxygen to prevent the metal from oxidation. I grease the crap out of mine now and rust has stopped developping for the most part. I spray other cars too other then my Subaru Outback 2010.. I spray inside doors, side panels every 2 years (panels 1x a year if the car had never been sprayed and had rust prior to spraying) and underside, rocker panels (in and out), wheel well 1x a year.
I love those Subaru’s! My eyes turn to dollar signs because I know it either needs control arm bushings or rear wheel bearings… or both! I’ve done so many now to the point I can replace both front control arms, all 4 bearings and alignment in 2 hours… if there not too much rust that is
Chances are the cat is fine, just a bad O2 or leaking exhaust as you said. I'd say that will determine whether you got a deal or not. For you the added content will make it a good deal. For a non-youtuber the need for a cat will tell the story. Some thigns I'd consider mainenance items at that mileage also like the outer tie rod, cv shaft, struts.
Dude this is the vid ive been waitin for!! haha been watchin ur stuff for a min using ur vids to fix up my 15' SJ. Love my forester and even thru all the sending i do with it, she still runs like a top! haha i wish you luck with ur 14' SJ and cant wait for future vids. Also wtf is with that dreaded wheel stud??? Noticed some weird ware on mine one day and did research on the forums and broken studs seem to be a thing on the SJ? 🤷♂
the thing is people would find the milage is too much for what you're asking for but, we know that forester has just broken in with that number. Anyway, looking forward to upcoming projects on it.
Awesome! Forester Content! I’ve been waiting to see you take on the SJ, I’ve got a 2016 XT Premium, super fun car but as my first Subaru, it’s been a learning experience
Thank you for doing a series on the Forester. I like the Outback and the Crosstrek but in New England used market, those cars cost more than the Forester. 😊So I target the Foresters and stay in a great utilitarian, dependable AWD car.
Definitely glad to see you get an SJ generation Forester to work through. I have a 2016 Forester XT Touring, and have been doing maintenance on it myself. I know, different engine, different interior, but it has some of the same issues, so I'm looking forward to your videos on this one! They are definitely commanding a high price, just about anywhere. That SJ once done would fetch 12k up here in NY easily.
Also, check the front control arms on either side. Even if they look okay, they are a common issue on this generation. If they are even a bit worn out, a video on replacing those would really benefit a lot of people with these cars, so they can see how it's done.
Love the channel. I will say that you might make 2000 if the cat is good. Break even if the market is still hot and the cat is bad. I bought a 2008 Impreza for 6500 with 98000 miles. Very clean except that I see some seepage on one side of the motor. Coolant looked spotless upon purchase. 3000 miles later it’s looking dark. I’m looking at a head gasket change. I missed the seepage upon inspection. I’m looking at doing the job myself.
Got my 2015 forester with 315k for $2600 with a bad cvt. Bought a engine and transmission for $2200 with 30k. Original engine still ran good at 315k and is a spare sitting in garage. Im under 5k
That's awesome I just bought a 07 for 3000 bucks has 260k but thing looks like it sat in a old lady's garage its whole life thing is spotless glad to hear
I just bought a 1997 outback with 130k for 2800. Can’t verify gaskets or timing were done so that’s first on the list. Has a bad front driver wheel bearing but the seller included the part. Auto trans.
My 2010 Forester with 451,704 miles just had spark plugs, wires, and coils replaced last week and the beautiful check engine light came back on. This is my vacation week, why me? LOL.
@@mikeessary4925 Yes, the three main things to stay on top of. 1. All oil changes according to your manual. 2. Spark Plug and wires. 3. PVC Valve. And you will make it to 300,000. My ole girl made it up to 299,000. This is my second engine with the same transmission. YMMV.
@@mikeessary4925 Usually, I do the trans/power steering/ front and rear differentials every 30,000 miles. According to the manual, plugs and wires should be checked and replaced at 15,000 miles. My 2015 is the same color and has the same broken hatch panel from slamming it too hard... I managed to epoxy it once, and then I broke it again. Mine has 105K miles and consumes a quart every 1000 miles. Another concern is front axles. I had them replaced at 50K and they are starting to "click, click, click" again during tighter turns. Also had to have that $500 "clock spring" for my horn replaced.
I bought earlier this spring a high mileage 2011 Subaru Forester Limited Edition that has 239,000 Kim’s. Had to spend about $ 2,000. To get new rotors, pads, wheel alignment, air conditioning, new tires replaced and front end. The fellow that inspected the Forester was annoyed I didn’t buy one of his Subaru’s. Fast forward by 2,500 Kim’s and I have really enjoyed the Forester and everything works on the vehicle. Only thing i hate is the factory radio that was designed by an idiot and I just don’t bother turning it on., as I have no idea how it works even at the best of times🥹 The engine light comes on and I have a reader that I cancel it when it comes on at about 800 - 850 Kim’s. Might plan on doing a winter project but time will tell😄

The low coolant in the over flow bottle is concerning. My 2015 had an issue with oil in the coolant. After a lot trouble shooting found the block had a defect allowing oil to get in the coolant. Ended up putting a lower mileage engine in. I'll drive it till the wheels fall off.

Cat codes like 420 , if you have an exhaust leak , fix it first.
How many miles were on it when the CVT needed replacement? I ask because Subaru extended the warranty on teh CVT's to 10 years, 100k....
Can't wait to see the process bringing this back to Mint condition
Great deal. Great video. I've been waiting for some great forester videos. Thank you keep em coming.
Three grand was a steal! Way to go!
Brilliant !!
Was waiting for one of these projects from your channel.
Thanks
Can't wait to see this series! Great deal
Cheers!
$2k for an Oem cat on a 10 year old car with 200k+ miles. Wing ding an aftermarket $500 Walker cat on it and cross your fingers.
Always getting good deals. Congrats!
Definitely a good deal 292900miles on my outback 2011.
Nice! Can't wait to see content for this particular model. I baby mine so it'll be great to look out for stuff from this high mileage example
Sounds like a good deal if you don't have to replace that catalytic converter, a steal if you don't have to replace the converter.
Good deal! Looking forward to all the videos. Cheers from Lexington, SC
Woah.. I have a 2004 Subie with only a few more miles than that (165k). You must drive a lot. :p
Definitely get a cvt service if you haven't and maybe consider a temp gauge for the trans temp if you're really concerned
just got a used 2012 subie legacy 2.5I cvt. really excited to see your content on repairing this car, i think it will be really helpful
Hell yeah. Own a 2017 premium same color black interior look forward to the content
I love those Subaru’s! My eyes turn to dollar signs because I know it either needs control arm bushings or rear wheel bearings… or both! I’ve done so many now to the point I can replace both front control arms, all 4 bearings and alignment in 2 hours… if there not too much rust that is
I have a 2010 orange forester XT sitting in my yard. Needs engine over haul and a front left fender.
Definitely following up with this series
Yay! A Forester from the same era as mine!!
the thing is people would find the milage is too much for what you're asking for but, we know that forester has just broken in with that number. Anyway, looking forward to upcoming projects on it.
This 2015-2018 forester. Need every 45000 replacement front both cv alxe and lower control arm.
😊So I target the Foresters and stay in a great utilitarian, dependable AWD car.
i have the same car here in australia with similar km's ...looking forward to future vids on this :)
Good deal I own a 2015 Forester so the videos will be helpful.
I think you got a great deal and if I lived closer I would buy it off of you when your finished
Oh man i was on the highway one day and my steering wheel started shaking 😂
I have a brand new 24 Forester with less than 3,000 miles. There is something very therapeutic about watching this video.
I just bought a 1997 outback with 130k for 2800. Can’t verify gaskets or timing were done so that’s first on the list. Has a bad front driver wheel bearing but the seller included the part. Auto trans.
I was saying 100% you payed 8k for it, I pooped my pants when you said 3k. Good deal
I had a bad clock spring in a week old 16’ impreza that lit the airbag, abs, n traction control lights.
The best video on RUclips for the 2014 subaru forester. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. How do you determine what trim level/model you have?
I’ve got a 2015 forester premium. I think they are great. I believe you’ve made a good deal after repairs are done.
My 2010 Forester with 451,704 miles just had spark plugs, wires, and coils replaced last week and the beautiful check engine light came back on. This is my vacation week, why me? LOL.
Wow! I have a 2014 with the 3.6. Do you think I will get 300,000? I have 118,000 now and do regular oil changes.
YMMV.
@@CleanteamofNY very cool. When do I change pvc valve and plugs?
@@mikeessary4925 Usually, I do the trans/power steering/ front and rear differentials every 30,000 miles. According to the manual, plugs and wires should be checked and replaced at 15,000 miles. As for the PVC valve, which I just learned about this year: ruclips.net/video/FZYnn_49rOE/видео.htmlsi=g9ykZm_B0gpYLfhO
215K on my 2014 Forester! hoping to get 238,900 at least. TO THE MOON!!
I prefer the outback myself.
Your total isn't counting labor to do the work. So not a true total. I don't think this was such a good deal. Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
cant freekin wait! i have a 2017 that i want to wrench on. shes been great
Own a 2015/ u gotta check Transmission fluid/CV axles with Bearings standard weak parts/ Lower control arm bushings common problem.. oil dilution Biggest issue.. Be more straigh forward technically..
The low coolant in the over flow bottle is concerning. My 2015 had an issue with oil in the coolant. After a lot trouble shooting found the block had a defect allowing oil to get in the coolant. Ended up putting a lower mileage engine in. I'll drive it till the wheels fall off.
Seems decent and give it a rust protection of fluid film 👌
Good deal! Looking forward to the video content. I just want know when your going to get a nice airconditioned shop with a lift built on your property to make these productions easier. 😁
Regarding the P0420, I'd give Duralube Severe Catalytic Converter cleaner a try. We have had success with it. Looking forward to the series!
I got an SJ and I’m definitely interested now lol
Judging by how dirty that passenger front seat is, I’d say that seat bottom is no good, which would explain that occupant detection malfunction code you got!
Looking into a used manual Forester myself, any advice? Best year after 2010 for a manual ? Also difference between the 5MT vs 6MT?
I have a 2015 California Forester that is in great shape. 1 issue is a small oil leak in spark plug wells. Hopefully now you have the 2014 Forester you will have that job video up soon.
