Great job as always! We’ll wait for the bugs to be worked out and the cheaper option in 2026. Some questions I still have are 1) How difficult is it to take the wheel covers off and does it come with a spare? 2) What’s the warranty for the actuators that hold the camper up in camper mode? 3) What’s the battery warranty and what is the expected loss of energy over several years? It’s a toss up between this and the Pebble Flow. In 2026 a version will be available for about $125,000. That price is in line with other 26ft travel trailers available today. We can't wait to see these out on the road! Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm. -Producer Tim
We suspect the primary source of energy for these will be AC power at home and at the camp site. It's suitable for two 6ft adults. We didn't measure the curved trapezoid. Hyper specific dimensions are best sourced from Lightship by registering your interest there. Thank you for watching our tour! -Producer Tim
Great review 👍 Love it but I wont be able to afford it at 250k$. Well I can afford it but wont buy it. And is it really practicle now a days with Fast charging growing more prevalent. Lets say I get a Rivian truck and hook up a TrailManor camper with its low profile towing. Then I put some solar on it and a daisey chain some Anker F3800 together - all in 70k$. Not as convenient or elegant as the AE. But what I will get for the 70K is a dinning table that wont wobble when you lean on it. Cheers
Remember, this vehicle has propulsion *AND* it collapses for 300% better highway efficiency. Those are the primary benefits of Lightship. Whether towing with gasoline, diesel, or an electric truck up front....range goes WAY down when a large object is blocking wind behind. AE.1 is for drivers who do not want to lose any range for about 300 miles (5.5hrs) of highway driving. The Anker F3800 maxes out at only 53kWh. AE.1 has 77kWh onboard. -Producer Tim
@MissGoElectric Respectfully, 300% better than what other trailers. It won't be 300 compared to the TrailManor. All manufacturers give exaggerated numbers and I don't believe anything until I see independent reviews. Cheers
The claim is that the AE.1 uses 1/3 the energy to pull compared to any other 26ft trailer on the market. Thusly it is 300% more efficient. Why? It is the only 25ft+ travel trailer which is only 6.5ft from the ground to the top in its "road mode". Diminished frontal area contributes to a much lower coefficient of drag. So far, no other trailer on in production pulls its own weight using its own drivetrain and energy source. The 300% claim checks out when drag co efficient and energy expenditure are evaluated. Lightship says drivers can expect to pull the AE.1 more than 300 miles with zero range loss to the tow vehicle. No other trailer has propulsion, therefor no other trailer can deliver a single mile of self-sufficiency. -Producer Tim
you're never goign to get any 240V plugs in to that outlet with that door folding down in the way - cables all come straight down and are way too stiff to make that tight bend.
@ all I know is my portabl charger won’t make that bend and most 240 cables wont. And yes it’s plausible that the engineers designed it this way; built it, and are ignoring the problem because it would cost too much money and time to address. I would like to see them test it honestly. It’s not enough to be proven wrong in theory but I’m happy to be proven wrong in practical application.
I think the trailer having its own electric drive is ridiculous. EVs with enough payload for the trailer, was plenty of power to tow the trailer. Having the extra drive is just a problem waiting to happen. I do think a trailer with its own battery pack that could be used as an auxiliary pack to transfer electricity to the tow vehicle is the best practice.
The 80kWh battery, drive unit, and aerodynamic camp mode are features which bring the cost up. There are less expensive options for those who do not value long range. As shown in this video, a version which doesn't pull it's own weight is priced at $125k. See our other videos linked in the description to learn a lot more. -Producer Tim
It's just too expensive for the one or two hours of convenience compared to pulling a regular travel trailer with an electric vehicle not to mention that EV's are getting more and more range with battery technology getting better and better every year. Soon Electric Trucks will do 500+ miles on one charge (GM EV Truck already does 440 miles) and then while towing you will get about 250 miles towing which is plenty for most camping trips.
Campers with very long range EV trucks who don't often need to go more than 200 miles will probably opt for a Lightship at $125k with no drive assist powertrain hardware. We've covered a few EV RVs in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL5nuLBN5_QSc-3irl1blsvvjrFeuQ5bPP -Producer Tim
@@MissGoElectric Interesting your point of view, so buyers of EV's with short range batteries because that can't afford the longest of range battery for their vehicle are going to buy a $200K+ RV so they can go camping. Very nicely equipped Travel Trailers (Brinkley) can be had for about $80,000 and less than that if you buy at the right time of year, so what would be the benefit of the $125K Lightship with no drive assist?
Even with no powertrain, Lightship requires less energy to tow than other 26ft travel trailers due to the minimized frontal area when collapsed into road mode. This is a premium product with enormous energy storage and solar generation capabilities. It appeals to a wide variety of buyers. Lightship is wise to offer various configurations to suit the budget and range requirements of buyers. -Producer Tim
@@MissGoElectric It may use less energy because it's lower but it wouldn't be enough energy savings to make it a determining factor in a purchasing decision. Look I like the product it's just too expensive for the minimal time savings. Trips longer than 200 miles will require a stop regardless of whether you are towing or not because of a bathroom break or eating so that is one stop to charge and negates the time savings. Trips shorter than 200 miles can be done without having to charge already with EV's that have over 400 miles of range. 78% of all RV trips are within 50 to 250 miles one way so this is going to be a tiny market unless they can get the price down. These are just simple facts, yes there will be some that want it regardless but you can sell some people a bridge to nowhere as well.
Venture capitalists and other investors have poured tens of millions of dollars into this project and others like it which we have covered on this channel. They moved ahead based on mountains of data which suggests there is a significant total addressable market. They've invested because the data suggests this endeavor will be profitable. We'll soon find out if you are better informed than the researchers. -Producer Tim
Would you be surprised to learn that one out of every 15 Americans is a millionaire? There are 22 *million* millionaires in the USA and only 50 AE.1 Cosmos editions to sell. Good odds. When you acclimate yourself to the price of competing 26ft premium travel trailers you'll see that $35k might have been a reasonable figure in the 1990s. -Producer Tim www.ubs.com/us/en/wealth-management/insights/global-wealth-report.html
We have never mistaken kW and kWh. Sometimes a guest might mis-speak. Not everyone is super comfortable on camera. Cut them some slack if it happens. -Producer Tim
As sterile as a hospital, Bedding is as modern as they made an RV in the 60's. The idea seems to come from putting two bathtubs together, one on the bottom and one on top, "Voila" we have make an RV. You don't have to be an idiot to buy this plastic bubble, but it would definitely help if you were one.
You win for most silly and reductionist comment of the year. A cynic can dismiss any object as a crude assemblage of molecules. Those kinds of statements are not constructive and they do not demonstrate active intellect. Pop-up travel trailers have been around for many decades. It makes sense to minimize the leading edge and volume of items in tow in order to reduce the energy required to move those items through the atmosphere. -Producer Tim
A travel trailer with no permanent bed? Most people are not going to want to convert those spaces twice a day to make this unit useable. The drive concept is interesting but there was very little detail on how it is controlled. If a bit of trailer sway is seems as a request for throttle (pulling forward) and it starts to push, it could just make things worse
Of course any owner can decide to leave a bed set up if they want to. As shown, the kitchen table is easily accessible regardless of the large bed setting. We have reviewed two electric travel trailers. Neither has a fixed bed. We see that as a major advantage. Transformable space is personally optimized space. Permanence of any given configuration is a bug, not a feature. At 26:10 Nick explains that the inertial sensor suite alongside the tongue pressure sensors provide all of the information necessary for the onboard controller to optimize trailer powertrain assistance. This is not a theory. These are on the road now. -Producer Tim
@@MissGoElectric As an RV (travel trailer) owner I can assure you that any convertible sleeping space is inferior to an actual mattress. As for the drive system, yes, they mentioned it, but very limited detail on what is in place to prevent it from supplying drive force at the wrong time. This should be a major consideration of a function that is not under the direct control of the driver.
Permanence and inflexibility are not required for comfort as you have indicated. We have produced and published extensive coverage of two other electric RV options which have *traditional* mattresses. One stows like a Murphy bed and converts the space into a workspace. The other has a lofted bed. In this video, Lightship representatives make it clear that there are driver selectable powertrain modes. The system can be disabled any time. As explained in this video, the Atlas control system works from within the vehicle. Of course, buyers who don't ever want any powertrain assistance capabilities can buy the version without the hardware. -Producer Tim (owner of several RVs for 21 years)
@@MissGoElectric The Pebble Flow is on the right track, but i just don't understand the obsession they seem to have with the opaque enabling glass. Absolute marketing gimmick to get them visually separated and interesting in the market, yes i get it. 100% unnecessary and not practical in my opinion. Should have used dual pane (actual opening) acrylic exterior windows and practical bathroom walls. Seriously... give me an actual use case for having glass bathroom walls for a recreational vehicle.

I hope they can make it cheaper. Shouldn't cost about a house.
The $125k starting price is competitive in this marketplace.
We expect additional down-market products in a few years.

It's nice, but it is close to the new Pebble. The Pebble is wayyyyyy cheaper.
This is our third video with Lightship. We have also published three with Pebble. -Producer Tim
I stop watching. You people think we Americans all just print money like the government??no one can afford this. You better find a way at 35k max

10-12 kWh! You don't say your are generating 10-12 kW a day.
We have never mistaken kW and kWh.
Sometimes a guest might mis-speak. Not everyone is super comfortable on camera. Cut them some slack if it happens.

The electric drive and electric tech is cool, but the rest is trash very low quality
When did you experience the Lightship AE.1 in person?

Well covered in terms of review, but wow, what a disappointment from original prototype in terms of both looks and functionality.
Thanks for watching. We've covered other EV RVs recently if you are looking for something different.

Pebble flow seems much better designed. I’ll wait until both are fully released before I make a final judgement.

(owner of several RVs for 21 years)
Its a hi-lo thats a big no!!
We've covered other EV RVs which don't offer the improved aerodynamics of "road mode" and you are welcomed to investigate those videos. -Producer Tim
This trailer is cool but I just don't like the aesthetics.
We've published this of other EV RVs and we invite you to check out those videos, too
-Producer Tim
@MissGoElectric I've been watching 'em! Love your channel
I don't think you could've made an uglier trailer.
There are many options in the marketplace. Have you watched any of our other EV RV tours?

@@MissGoElectric The Pebble Flow is on the right track, but i just don't understand the obsession they seem to have with the opaque enabling glass. Absolute marketing gimmick to get them visually separated and interesting in the market, yes i get it. 100% unnecessary and not practical in my opinion. Should have used dual pane (actual opening) acrylic exterior windows and practical bathroom walls. Seriously... give me an actual use case for having glass bathroom walls for a recreational vehicle.
Again expensive with no real bed
You've seen 2 out of 3 EV RV videos now :)
