You can't watch E.T. without immediately watching Mac and Me, right afterwards. I want to see you guys review that one. It's a travesty if you don't. 😃
The parts of the movie where E.T. is sick and dying were terrifying to me as a kid. Especially when the guys in the NASA suits show up. I couldn't watch it.
Scared the crap outta me before those parts. Was like 2-3 in the theatre and made my mom take me home. Then my sisters had E.T. stickers all over a wall in a room. We called it the E.T. room. I was scared to look at the pictures.
Star Wars is set a long time ago in a galaxy far away... E.T. is (acording to a stickeralbum i got as a kid) about ten million years old... He clearly has the force (healing, levitating)... Remembers Yoda...
Fun fact drew barrymore actually thought ET was real and used to talk to him in between takes. So Steven Spielberg would tell the puppeteers to keep et going to keep the magic alive for drew
I feel like in a way the movies that scared us in our childhood are the ones that really stick with us. That was the case for me in regards to Jurrasic Park and the first Lord of the Rings(the ring wraiths freaked me out as a kid in the theaters). they are my favorite movies now though.
Yup I use to have a recurring nightmares of E.T. as a kid. Terrified me for years and for some reason my parents thought it was a good idea to take me on the ride when I was so young and thought it would help me with my fear. It did not. Was crying half the time
Got to see this at the cinema this year for the 40th anniversary. It’s very dear to me. It always gets me emotional. Even this reaction for me tearing up.
the girl who elliot kissed in class was on Baywatch posed for playboy and she played a playboy playmate who in the cake in the movie under seige with steven segal
This is one of my favorite movies. My mom, an accomplished seamstress, made an E.T. costume for herself and the man with keys for my dad. I couldn't wait to use that costume (took forever for me to grow into it). I still have the costume and will bust it out every few years. This is a great movie
Love how you guys pronounce "Reesee's Piecees"! Having grown up in the '80s and '90s, I can say that yes, kids definitely went trick-r-treating and generally ran around the neighborhoods by themselves. One thing I never picked up on as a kid was the subtext about the dad having left the family for another woman. Their mom is at her wit's end, partly because she's a newly single parent and dealing with her husband leaving her. The kids are all dealing with it too, and Elliot being the sensitive one, his bond with E.T. helps him through this time. I read that Spielberg himself had an imaginary friend after his parents divorced, and that was his inspiration for the story. That personal significance is, I think, a big part of why the film is so touching.
Born in 1977 here. My brother in 1969. Yep, we did most things on our own. Trick or Treating included. No cell phones, we just came home when the street lights came on. If we were late we got in trouble and legitimate freak outs could happen if we weren’t where we said we would be. But, yes, we did most things without parental supervision in my lower middle class neighborhood.
Yep! Born in 1975 ....us gen x kids grew up in the funnest time to be kids. Saw ET in theatre when it came out....still cry I admit watching it. 80s was a special time...I hate the world today!
Nominated for 9 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Visual Effects Best Sound Editing Best Film Editing Best Original Score. It was a huge success at the box office, making $790 million dollars against a $10 million dollar budget. It opened up 2 weeks before John Carpenter's THE THING was in theaters, and when critics saw that film, they said "It was one hell of an antidote for ET." THE THING was the exact opposite of ET, showing a not-so-friendly alien going on a rampage.
ET is a great movie to show the difference between a blockbuster from that era vs the modern blockbuster. ET drives drama through the characters and story that connect with the audience because it was so limited by technology. Today’s blockbusters lack that drama because they use special effects to drive the story. This is why ET holds up 40 years later where most modern blockbusters will essentially be forgotten.
All these years from when I saw itthe first time as a kid, to now as an adult. I still get weepy from the range of emotions this movie invokes. A true classic.
ET was one of the movies from childhood that touches your heart and wrecks u... free willy, lion King, dragon heart and jurassic Park are some of the others
Another fun fact! 😆 the part were the kids walk in to the room and scream are real reactions. They were not told about ET and that was their very first time seeing them. Same with Drew jumping when ET is getting jumped. They told her ET was real and she really thought he was dying.
“Does he kill the bunny?”😂 why reactions are so interesting is the person reacting has no idea what to expect. This is probably the most harmless alien movie ever made, but Jen thinks they might sacrifice Fluffy in the first 5 minutes 😅👍
I saw this in the theatre and still gets me everytime I’m 53. Was such a huge movie when it came out. You will have to show Jen the new commercial they did a couple years ago
Fun fact: Drew wanted and auditioned to play the little girl in poltergeist but her godfather Steven Spielberg thought it was a little too mature of a movie for her age so he picked her to be in ET instead. Also when they found ET near the water used to freak me out as a child.
'82 is the year I got married and we went to see E.T. I cried then, and at 64 I STILL cry watching this movie. And I mean it's just as exhilerating and exciting and heartbreaking and heartwarming (for me) as it was then (I just finished watching it again). And it dawned on me that, this ISN'T a "kid's" movie. It's just a GREAT movie!!!
And that must've been the full evening price! Lucky you. I was born several years later ('86). 'E.T' actually opened a week apart from 'Poltergeist', which Spielberg made back-to-back w/ it.
Jen is just like my mom when she watches shows and movies. She cares so much about animals, kids, and anything cute and hates to see them get hurt, or in distress, and she even comments like Jen does, “I don’t like this.” Etc… 😂 Gets really emotional and empathetic towards the characters and animals.
Huge reason the kids work so well is due to Spielberg shooting the film in chronological continuity so the kids build the bond with ET. Also, how funny is Jen? “on no I hope ET doesn’t die. Can you kill that spider?” Lol. Love her!
8:13 That reaction from Dee Wallace was genuine. Henry Thomas wasn't told what to call his brother, just that it had to sound mean, so he had to make it up. When Thomas shouted "penis breath", Wallace really did break character and started laughing before barely regaining herself to finish her line.
I have many fond memories of and associated with this movie. I was 11 years old when it was released, and I did not see it in an ordinary theater but a drive-in. It was so much more awesome seeing this for the first time under the stars; it made it more magical and special. That is one memory that will be with me to the day I die. The Christmas after this came out, one of my presents was a plush E.T. doll. That was my favorite present that Christmas and I had it for many years. A little bit of trivia: The biology teacher at the school was played by Harrison Ford. That's why you never see the teacher's face and Harrison Ford changed his voice a little, but, if you listen, you can tell it is him.
ET was the first movie I can remember seeing in the theater. So much nostalgia comes with that memory. ... Have you seen the 2019 special, E.T.: A Holiday Reunion, where ET returns to visit Elliot, now grown, and introduces his family. ET spends the holidays with them. So cute and well done.
You should look up the screen test that Henry Thomas did for his role as Elliot. He could cry on command and make it real. They asked him how he did that and he responded: "I just think about when my dog died."
It’s funny they wanted to use M&Ms in the movie but Mars was afraid that the movie would scare kids and didn’t want to be a part of it. Reese’s sales skyrocketed after the movie came out. All the medical people working on ET are real medical people. Spielberg felt that actors couldn’t get the terms right so he told the medical staff to work on ET like they would a regular person. I remember growing up we used to walk about 3miles to go trick or treating and we’d be out until midnight. My dad went with us and carried a garbage bag that we’d dump our bags into when they got full so we could get more. When I first saw this I had such a problem with the medical part. I used to fast forward through it. Drew Barrymore thought ET was real so Spielberg instructed the puppeteers to keep the illusion going with her. Ben Burtt is an amazing sound person who worked on this movie. E.T.'s voice was provided by Pat Welsh, an elderly woman who lived in Marin County, California. Welsh smoked two packets of cigarettes a day, which gave her voice a quality that sound effects creator Ben Burtt liked. She spent nine-and-a-half hours recording her part, and was paid $380 by Burtt for her services. Burtt also recorded 16 other people and various animals to create E.T.'s "voice." These included Spielberg; Debra Winger; Burtt's sleeping wife, who had a cold; a burp from his USC film professor; as well as raccoons, sea otters, and horses. I had the ET video game for Atari and loved it. Wish I still had the game (along with the Atari system).
Fun fact! ET was supposed to be a sequel to Close Encounters but he fell in love with how the script turned in to a whole new thing so he kept it different.
I saw this at an "Un-titled" screening. A small ad in the newspaper advertised an advanced special screening of a new upcoming Spielberg movie. No title was given, limited seating, blah, blah. I went, waited in line, and was about 3-4 to the last in line for an available ticket. The audience loved the movie, all stood up a gave a loud rousing long standing ovation. This was a few months before its general release. I saw it again later and could see that there were just a few edits, tightening up scenes. According to what I've read, M&M passed as being the candy "bait" - and Recess jumped at the chance, and the rest is history! Because of this product placement Recess skyrocketed in sales and became the candy Powerhouse that it is today.
That's true - MARS either didn't want their candy associated with aliens or thought the movie would bomb (despite Spielberg's previous successes) so they passed. Reeses Pieces were brand new and Reeses jumped at the opportunity which brought them huge sales for their new candy. IIRC, the novelization of the movie still uses M & M's, although I haven't read it since the movie originally came out.
I just love how Jen was reacting throughout the movie. She's so genuine, sweet, and supportive for E.T., the love of a mother y'all. Holden, You cutting to the credits as soon as E.T. is found near the river made me burst out laughing.
I was born right before this film was released. My parents took me “to see it” as an infant in the back row. So it was my first ever movie. When in college, I took a short term class studying Christian Allegory in popular media. We discussed books, but also watched some great films, and E.T. was the highlight. The professor even did a trail of Reese’s Pieces to our film room that day and had a pile at each of our desks 🤣 I’m surprised you didn’t mention the allegory side, Holden. E.T. dies to save Elliot, is resurrected, and says “I’ll be right here” before he ascends to heaven. Merry Christmas 🎄
I'd forgotten that Elliot was played by the same actor who plays the dad (younger version) in The Haunting of Hill House. His face is very recognisable.
Little Fun Fact, they shot a Scene with Harrison Ford as the Principal talking to the Mom, but Test Audiences were to excited and were disappointed that he didn’t show up again so Spielberg decided to cut the Scene
This movie is my childhood. Makes me super nostalgic. I rode my bike to the theater when this first came out. Needless to say i thought i could fly it after 😂😂
My Aunt took me to see E.T. in the theater. Being a year older than Drew Barrymore, I was devastated when E.T. got sick and died. I even remember what I ate that night for dinner, (I think only because of what it was, Fried Spam 🤢). That girl Elliot kissed, is Shauni from the first 43 episode of Baywatch, and the "Dancer" on Underseage. Also this is the Original version. The re-edit, E.T. was in the bath, and the Government had 2 way radios instead of guns.
I got to see John Williams conduct the last section of music from this film live and oh boy was it an emotional experience! A bucket list event that I will carry with me to the grave and beyond! 🖤
So Asogians (E.T.'s species) have a brief cameo in The Phantom Menace. This means there is a link from our galaxy to the Star Wars galaxy, which means that the Star Wars galaxy does exist at some point in our known universe. And since E.T. has powers, he would essentially have been a Force-sensitive being in the Star Wars galaxy, which ultimately means he could and maybe should have been Jedi. Therefore, I want a crossover story where I see a Jedi Asogian... maybe even E.T. himself.
It's actually in the scene where chancellor Valorum is remove from leadership of the galactic senate in phantom menace that you can spot the representatives of E.T.'s race.
Jen, I took my nephew to see this. He was 2, I think. He was really emotional during it. So much so, I talked about it for YEARS. I think you beat him on emotion.
Your wife is an interesting character, lol. I still remember seeing this in theater as a kid almost the same age as Elliot. To this day it still moves me, and I think this movie is a great example of Spielberg at the height of his powers. When I think Spielberg I think of Jaws, Raiders, and this movie.
Btw, E.T. for Atari didnt "almost bankrupt the gaming industry".. that's an urban legend. The "Game Over" doc about Atari covers this pretty extensively, up to the landfill dig.. the industry was already in decline, and after indie companies like Activision won the right to make unlicensed games, a flood of shovelware hit the system ... Arcades were doing poorly too by 83, which had nothing to do with E.T... video games were just considered a fad that had run its course. The landfill wasnt just ET, it was all unsold Atari stock.
First, yes kids in the 80s went trick or treating without their parents….. and we lived to talk about it!!! I saw this in the theater as a youngin and Pops had to take me out because I was crying so hard. I still remember being so emotional over my new favorite extra terrestrial. Great memories, glad you two watched this old classic!!!
Watching this in the cinema when I was about three is one of my formative memories. Well, my crying all the way home is the memory, not the film itself. I cried then because I was sad that E.T. died (him coming back to life didn't seem to remedy my sadness). I cry now because it's so beautiful and wholesome.
I wish E.T. would have gotten an official sequel that wasn't a Christmas/Car commercial and maybe end it there. I think the world could use that again. So much adorableness and heart💙💗💙💛 Happy belated 40th Anniversary Steven Spielberg's "E.T. : THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL" (JUNE 11, 1982)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two scenes that scared me as a kid. When Elliot finds ET after leaving the Reese Pieces and ET screams. 😮😮😮 then when ET is almost dead in the riverbed. His body creeped me out. Also when they have Elliot in the plastic tubing hallway the FBI comes for whatever. Curious how Jen reacts
Wow, this one took Jen for a ride on the emotional rollercoaster, didn't it? This is a great reaction video. Happy Holidays to you both, and thanks for the wonderful gift of this reaction!
I feel you Jen! As a child in theaters I had to be removed from the theater because I was crying so loudly when ET died 😂 nobody knew he would be okay at the time, they let me back in when he got better 😅
Back then everyone still talked with there neighbors so the whole neighborhood looked at for the kids. Also, unlike today everyone in the neighborhood realy did participate in halloween so you could stay in the area and get a lot of candy. I was 8-10 and my parents just told me to be back by a certain time.
As with other commenters on this video.. I watched this movie as a young child and gained a HUGE phobia of E.T. Still have a phobia of him today...I laugh it off as funny, but my irrational fear of him still makes me avert my eyes every time I see a photo or movie clip of him. Safe to say this thumbnail took me by a nasty suprise when I scrolled and saw it 😂
Different times is right. We didn't even have a lock on the door for a long time, and never locked it when we did, "in case someone breaks down and needs the phone". We never locked a car door unless it was running and got in trouble if we did lol. And yes, we did everything on our own or with our siblings/friends, parents would check on us if we didn't show up for meals haha.
As to wondering if 80s kids went out on their own for trick-or-treating... a big YES... basically in the 80s, we did everything on our own. It was the wild West for kids back then. lol
I did not want to see this movie as a kid. I whined when my parents brought it around, though I don't remember why. Maybe I just wanted to watch "Madagascar" for the 20th time. But I eventually caved, and I must say that from that day forward, I am glad I did. My parents showed me something that I still love to this day! It is still to me one of Spielberg's best, and one of a few films that earns a mandatory annual viewing.
Debra Winder did the voice of E.T. Also, when I was a kid, all the kids saw this and were running around school with their finger sticking out and screaming, "E.T. Goooo Home!!"
I watched this movie when it came out in the movies. This is when they had double features (pay once for two movies). The double feature was E.T. and Superman 2. Then we snuck into another movie and it was Creep Show. I was 10 and my cousin was 7 so we ran out of there. I think Roger from American Dad was modelled after E.T.

Need to show her the ET holiday special reunion from 2019
This movie never fails to make me cry. Every. Damn. Time. Since I was about 5. Breaks my heart.
Me too, the part where E.T dies and the ending really gets me to this day. I ❤ this movie so much
Spectacular soundtrack from John Williams…
It's sadder for me when I realised why E.T. was dying was because of a broken heart :'(
I just love how Jen was reacting throughout the movie. She's so genuine, sweet, and supportive for E.T., the love of a mother y'all. Holden, You cutting to the credits as soon as E.T. is found near the river made me burst out laughing.
Should include Flight of The Navigator as well, another 80's classic.
I was born right before this film was released. My parents took me “to see it” as an infant in the back row. So it was my first ever movie.
When in college, I took a short term class studying Christian Allegory in popular media. We discussed books, but also watched some great films, and E.T. was the highlight. The professor even did a trail of Reese’s Pieces to our film room that day and had a pile at each of our desks 🤣
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the allegory side, Holden. E.T. dies to save Elliot, is resurrected, and says “I’ll be right here” before he ascends to heaven.
Merry Christmas 🎄
I'd forgotten that Elliot was played by the same actor who plays the dad (younger version) in The Haunting of Hill House. His face is very recognisable.
There are very few movies that have a soundtrack that works on its own without the movie and E.T. is one of them.
Fun fact the E.T. species is in the Star Wars universe, they make a cameo in the Phantom Menace
Fun fact E.T. is a Jedi. He uses the Force a number of times in the movie.
I love that Drew Barrymore recently disclosed she thought he was real during filming.
Little Fun Fact, they shot a Scene with Harrison Ford as the Principal talking to the Mom, but Test Audiences were to excited and were disappointed that he didn’t show up again so Spielberg decided to cut the Scene
80s kid here. Yes we went trick or Treating on our own. Our parents never had to escort us anywhere. Today's parenting is super confusing to me.
I remember seeing this movie when I was a little kid. It absolutely terrified me. I think it was the ET puppet.
Same here. E.T. is now one of my favorite movies of all time.
The final ten minutes of this movie is peak John Williams.
My five year old watched ET this year and absolutely loved it.
This movie is my childhood. Makes me super nostalgic. I rode my bike to the theater when this first came out. Needless to say i thought i could fly it after 😂😂
I was born in ‘79 and this is the first movie I remember seeing in a theater. I was only 3 or 4 but it was decidedly memorable!😅
This is just one of my fav movies of all times, this and the ghostbusters movies
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind next??
E.T. is a masterpiece. 10/10 from me. I've seen this movie literally over a thousand times. It's a very rewatchable movie.
Therefore, I want a crossover story where I see a Jedi Asogian... maybe even E.T. himself.
Because E.T. is ten million years old, it all can fit. ;)
Funfact: In this movie, E.T. is played by two actors because the first actor suffocated unplanned in the costume suit. Other times back then.
22:36 I kept laughing at this part for so long 😂😂😂Holden that was golden
I got to watch this in the IMAX this past August for its 40th anniversary, it was so cool seeing it on the big screen!
Love E.T. Fun fact the ET species are also in Star Wars Episode One The Phantom Menace! In the council scene, blink and you guys miss it!
I live to think somehow E.T. came from the “Galaxy far far away” to explore other worlds such as earth.
Which proves ET was a Jedi. Look at all the powers he has.
I bawled my eyes out when E.T. 'died'..... How do you guy not even shed a tear?? 🤨😂
Your wife is an interesting character, lol. I still remember seeing this in theater as a kid almost the same age as Elliot. To this day it still moves me, and I think this movie is a great example of Spielberg at the height of his powers. When I think Spielberg I think of Jaws, Raiders, and this movie.
It's the Rees-Es Piec-Es for me. They are pieces. Like of a puzzle. That being said...I called them Piec-Es until I was in my 20s. Lol
Btw, E.T. for Atari didnt "almost bankrupt the gaming industry".. that's an urban legend.
E.T.s species is in Star Wars, E.T. recognizes Yoda, he uses the Force. E.T. is a Jedi! Change my mind.
I wish E.T. would have gotten an official sequel that wasn't a Christmas/Car commercial and maybe end it there. I think the world could use that again. So much adorableness and heart💙💗💙💛
Happy belated 40th Anniversary Steven Spielberg's "E.T. : THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL" (JUNE 11, 1982)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"With my luck he'd turn out like Roger from American Dad" - LMAO Holden
This movie affected so many things and people.
Neil Diamond's "Turn On Your Heart Light" was written about Elliott and ET's friendship!
The smell of the E.T ride Line is so amazing. I normally go on it like 5 times when I go to Orlando lol it's air conditioning, fun, and delightful
You should shows her the kids audition to play Eliott...it was so good.
Safe to say this thumbnail took me by a nasty suprise when I scrolled and saw it 😂
Different times, Better times.
The first movie I saw in the theater ca 1983. My father took me.. and I cried my eyes out at the end.
Btw loved Jens Friends reference.. "Hop on Gert"
The shot of the keys is from ET’s perspective/ eye level to depict his fear of being caught by the Feds.
First movie I can remember crying to as a child watching this at my grandma's house. It's so special.
I just busted out laughing when the spacesuit guy discovered ET. "You're powers are weak, old man." LOL. Brilliant!
As to wondering if 80s kids went out on their own for trick-or-treating... a big YES... basically in the 80s, we did everything on our own. It was the wild West for kids back then. lol
When I was little I used to call this movie E.T. The Extra Testicle.
I find it funny that your channels icon is a recreation of a famous scene from the movie, and you guys are finally getting around to it lol
The edits in this were on point so funny! " Kids didnt fear ET at all" pan to the kids screaming XD
You should show Jen the Xfinity ET commercial that came out a couple years ago
This was the 1st movie I ever saw in a theater when I was 4. We named our younger son Elliot. Great reaction vid.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that ET terrified as a kid.
