Richard Dreyfus and the other lady had a deep connection because of the alien encounter. They travelled across the country in a car for hours and hours and endured dangerous hardships against a conspiratorial government, so there was plenty of time to talk about her missing son and their lives up to that point. Yeah, it’s messed up how he basically went crazy and abandoned his children, but he was compelled and drawn to solve the mystery and get some answers. He and the woman were literally the only ones that made it to the aliens and they specifically wanted them to come with them. So his compulsion was purposeful and directed. Who knows how many other families were also ruined by the various encounters.
My first time watching this movie was 20 years ago or so. I didn't know anything about it, but my dad said it was "a good alien movie." I asked for the DVD as a Christmas gift from my grandparents and they came through for me. I watched it on Christmas night after we had come home from visiting family. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is forever associated with Christmas for me.
The thing to remember about this story is that it really is about the experience the human characters go through more that just the aliens. They are effected on a level that our minds can barely understand. Watching Roy try to cope with the implanted images the aliens put in his head and the obsessive pull towards that location once he understands what it is that he can't get out of his mind is almost heartbreaking. He's literally having a mental breakdown and doesn't understand that it is completely out of his control. Even Jillian is so obsessed with the implanted instructions in her mind that even though she is distraught over losing her son, she is still entranced and mesmerized by being at the event that she has been practically brainwashed into attending. She does tell Roy about her son during their journey to the location and the kiss isn't really meant to be a romantic relationship, but more of a shared affection for each other in the midst of a situation that is beyond what most people could ever even imagine experiencing. This movie is one of the first of this type of genre. It was a movie that wasn't about aliens invading but an actual first time encounter with aliens that actually want to be seen and reveal themselves to our world and engineered this event to make first contact. The visuals still stand up to this modern era and with no CGI. This is once again a perfect example of Spielberg's movie magic that amazes, terrifies, and warms your heart all at the same time.
Such a classic movie. It opened up a lot of people's minds and started a wave of new "alien" inspired movies as opposed to the 50's - 60's outer space troupe movies.
The way I thought of the kiss and her not mentioning her kid was the result of the subconscious draw. All the people who had the same attraction seemed very single-minded (Roy doesn't mention his family after they left either), and they felt a need to express themselves. They weren't actually in love with each other, they were in love with the beyond and had no other way to express it. A very desert island scenario. Great movie though, Spielberg is the king of wonder and he uses small details to make a big impact. That final stretch is still one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. He'd actually later regret this ending once he became a father, which is funny because The Fabelmans (his autobiographical film that just came out) ends the same way as this.
Wow. Good eye. I knew about Teri Garr, but I didn't realize it was Bob Balaban who played Phoebe's Dad. He looks so different without his beard. I recognized him from "2010: The Year We Make Contact"
The young child's reaction faces were real. He came around a wall and saw a person in a scary mask/outfit, then the mask was removed to see the guy underneath. Thats 'terror' and 'happy relief' in real-time.
That was Lance Henriksen(Bishop) in this movie. This is one of my favorite films. I must have been about eight or nine years old when I first saw this, about three years after it's theatrical release. I have a book that came out a few years ago that is a retrospective look at the making of the film, as well as the film itself. And I just recently found the score to this film on vinyl for four dollars. I also remember watching the film Super 8 for the first time, it brought me back to that first time I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A bit of nostalgia. Super 8 was also an homage to Close Encounters. I love watching both films back-to-back.
If you look closely at that first shot of the Mothership when it’s coming over the Devil’s Tower, you can see the silhouette of R2-D2 attached to the bottom of the ship. Also, the entire ending of this with “the encounter” was filmed in a huge airplane hanger in Mobile Alabama.
31:15, I almost spit out my coffee when you said "Heil Hitler." Not sure if you've seen Jojo Rabbit, but made me think about the scene when the gestapo and Jojo salute 31 times. Imagine if they had to "Heil" with each of those little greys. LOL
I believe that the guy playing the keyboards on Devil’s Tower was the technician who, IRL, came to set them up for the movie. They asked him if he wanted to be in the film and he said yes.
And they weren't communicating with sound, they were communicating through music. When you dissect musical notes it is pure math. That's how they came up with the numbers for the longitude and latitude. this is why scientists say that the universal language of the universe is math.
This is a great movie and I think the best part is that it takes a 'less is more' approach. Yes, we get to see the ships and eventually the aliens, but the majority of the movie doesn't include them at all. The obsession is what takes center stage and I love how he doesn't even know what he's 'supposed' to be obsessed about in the first place. Then that shot of the Devils Tower on the TV where it switches from Roy to Jillian both watching it and seeing the utter relief on their faces...that's just such a damn good scene in my opinion. This movie is imaginative, original, creative, and I love the mystery aspect of it. Although I will say that when I saw this when I was younger, I was absolutely terrified of the scene where Barry was abducted. When the screws start turning...ughhh..freaked me out.
I saw this film in cinema with my parents when I was 7 years old. Changed my outlook on life and still remember that night, driving home and looking at the stars. Have the original LP Vinyl also.
Dog Advice: she needs something to do when you leave the house. Stuff a few Kongs for extreme chewers with low calorie treats and tuck them around in places that are safe for her to investigate. She will have fun searching and figuring out how to get the treats out.
The beginning of this movie is one of the best I've ever seen! The low angle of the camera, the cinematography, the shot at 4:10, the close-in shots of the air traffic controllers with the ones in the background being blurry! The mystery of the events in the early scenes was so amazing without a bunch of special effects. Fantastic! It's not like that today, it seems. The ship in the desert scene... pure movie magic! Practical effects cannot be beaten. Spielberg's older movies all had this same look to them. Great stuff! Plus, if it hasn't already been stated, if you look closely, the Airplane in the center is actually an F6F Hellcat and not an Avenger. Also, all the planes were in the wrong color scheme (no big deal, but interesting). Those in the movie are in the 1943 (Sea Blue top, Intermediate Blue sides, and Insignia White undersides). Flight 19 Avengers were in the 1944 all-over Sea Blue scheme. Keep it up guys. I've really enjoyed the movies this week!
Keep in mind that the last time Gillian sees her son is the alien ship ascending into the clouds. Then with their compulsion to get to devil’s tower, and their collective visions, I think there was an expectation to see Barry again. Also I think we can assume that she and Roy must’ve had some time on the road to share stories about what brought them to the mountain. So by the end there was no need to explain her reason for staying behind until she could find her son. At the same time, Roy was under his own compulsion to continue…
I've still got a phobia of the greys from this movie. Saw it as a kid and it's just stuck with me, I can't look at the last five or ten minutes of the film. But it's such pure artistry, I adore the rest of it. Apparently the kid's scene in the kitchen, early on, they got him to make those faces by having a man he was friends with show up, dressed as a gorilla. The kid looked worried, right up until the guy took the costume's mask off and got a smile.
Fun Fact - The mother of the child turns up in another alien film...PAUL. With Sigourney Weaver. The ending with all those people in red jumpsuits was taken from a book on Project Crystal Knight, basically an exchange project.
CONTACT! Hopefully Jen hasn't seen it cause I'd love to see her reaction to it. If none of you guys have seen it (doubt it) it's a fantastic movie based on a book by Carl Sagan and directed by Robert Zemeckis with Jodie Foster and Mathew McConaughey as leads. Highly recommend it!
Judging from their comments on close encounters I would think they would be wondering when the action scenes start. Holden no doubt wondering why they cast someone like Jodie Foster who he has no doubt never heard of.
This movie was a bolt from the blue for us in cinemas in 1977, released the same year as another game-changing special effects space movie by George Lucas. Bet you can guess the title! Being a teenager at the time, it was a very exciting year at the movies! One comment below has mentioned that Francois Truffaut plays the French scientist in the movie. I now realise that I am very old compared to most of your viewers, because that name means a lot to me. Here is the bit from Wikipedia about "Close Encounters" that describes his role: "François Truffaut as Claude Lacombe, a French government scientist in charge of UFO-related activities in the United States. The UFO expert Jacques Vallée served as the real-life model for Lacombe. Gérard Depardieu, Philippe Noiret, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Lino Ventura were considered for the role. Internationally renowned as a film director, this was Truffaut's only acting role in a film he did not direct as well as his only role in an English-language film. During filming, Truffaut used his free time to write the script for The Man Who Loved Women." Truffaut was a prolific and highly celebrated movie director, part of the French "New Wave" of filmmakers. I really love a number of his movies. They're in totally different genres from this, but maybe someday you could view one of his movies, such as "Small Change" or "The Last Metro" or "Jules et Jim". There are many more good titles, too.
Actually Melinda Dillon did tell Dreyfus that Barry was gone, during the public meeting, as she was getting on the elevator. Awesome film; this and Star Wars turned me onto filmmaking.
And they were talking about Barry’s abduction while driving to Devils Tower. Not sure how the hell they missed these details except they spent considerable time “riffing” on the movie as though they were Mystery Science Theater. 🙄
I thought it rather comical when the little kid got up and saw the mess on the floor, that Holden said that your guys place looked like that after Boston got at everything. The boy was wearing a shirt that said Boston on it. 😆
Yes, Jen is correct. That is the same actor who played Bishop in Aliens. His name is Lance Hendricks and he has been in a long list of movies and tv programs. He was in The Terminator as one of the two police detectives investigating the murders of women named Sarah Connor. The other actor was Paul Winfield from Star Trek II: The Rath of Khan. Hendrick was originally cast to be the Terminator but Arnold Schwarzenegger's sizes, wooden acting and poor English made him a more intimidating character. Friend and Director James Cameron recast him. Lascombe was portrayed by Famous French film director Francois Truffaut, who director Steven Spielberg very much respected. His 1959 film The 400 Blows ushered in the French New Wave Film movement. Day for Night(1973) won him a BAFTA for Best Foreign Film and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. He directed over twenty films in his short life. Including an English language Fahrenheit 451(1966) from the Ray Bradbury novel of the same name. A good watch suggestion. He was also a film journalist and critic.
The tunnel scene is in Mobile. The scene where the McDonald's power goes out is in Chickasaw al. The scene where the trucks move out of the hanger is in Mobile. The scene at the train station is in Bay Minette Al
As a kid who was just 7 years old, I didn't get to the theatre very much but in 1977 my late father took me to see STAR WARS, which blew my mind cause there was nothing else like it that existed at that time. Then the very next movie I got to see was CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, which also blew my mind. With the next few years, I saw SUPERMAN THE MOVIE, E.T., EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and a little later, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. To me that was the true golden age of movies cause all my favorites came out during these years from 1977 to about 1981. More great movies came out shortly after but those original ones I mentioned just shaped my imagination and made me fall in love with the cinema. Thanks for your review! Keep smiling 👍🙂
I've been in the Bermuda Triangle. STAY OUT! It was the most frightening experience in my life. I thought the ship the Iwo Jima was going to sink. The waves hit our ship so bad. It sounded like King Kong was pounding on the haul of the ship. Ironically the same ship the Apollo 13 astronauts were picked up on. There's a plaque on the ship when you first board the ship.
Spielberg has really done some good in-depth research on alien encounters and UFOs (from terminologies to official cases, including the head of Project Bluebook himself as a close consultant). He borrowed so many details from them to make this film somewhat believable at the time, winning many awards and gaining worldwide popularity, making it an instant classic. Many ufologists praise this film as one of those that took the subject seriously.
Ive walked around the base of the "Devils Tower". It was actually a cool experience and I just love this movie. Spielberg is King! F.R.I.E.N.D.S fans might notice Phoebe Buffay's parents are both in this movie. Kinda fitting considering who Phoebe is lol
This was the very first Spielberg movie I watched on VHS when I was younger. The second was ET, and the third being HOOK. It was nominated for 9 Oscars: Best Director Best Supporting Actress, Melinda Dillon Best Sound Effects (Won) Best Sound Editing Best Visual Effects Best Film Editing Best Production Design Best Cinematography (Won) Best Original Score.
Bishop and that guy in this movie was played by Lance Henriksen who also played Frank Black in the TV show Millenium. Millenium was in the same universe as The X-Files, also made by the creator of The X-Files and they even had a crossover. If Jen really loved The X-Files, it's likely that she must've had watched Millenium also. If she did watched Millenium then she should've recognized Bishop as Frank Black from the first glimpse of him in Alien. But yeah, in Alien and in this movie was a very young Lance Henriksen.
"Project Blue Book" (History Channel 2019-2020) was an interesting TV show set during the Cold War. One episode has the main character on the set of "Close Encounters" as an advisor. Too bad it didn't get another season or two. It did the 1950s vibe really well.
Richard Dreyfuss character was based on Professor J. Allen Hynek, who reported on cases from Project Blue Book. Most scenes in this film were inspired by those cases.
@John Millan - and the French guys was based on Jacques Vallée - and his classic amazing books about UFOs such as: -"Dimensions: A Casebook of Alien Contact" -"Confrontations: A Scientist's Search for Alien Contact" -"Revelations: Alien Contact and Human Deception"
Interesting facts: Barry's mom actually played the mom in "A Christmas Story." Teri Garr was also in movies like "Mr. Mom" and "Young Frankenstein." Great movie. A little slow at times. I loved watching it with you guys though. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and I'm so glad I found you this year!😀👍❤
I just have to say that Jen's "WIFE EST. 2022" shirt is totally awesome. Also, have you guys considered watching the Jodie Foster movie Contact for alien week? Seems like it would be a good fit
the Devil's Tower scene did go on long BUT when this came out the theater audiences just watched in awe and time wasn't an issue. you need to spice up your alien theme with something REALLY different from what you've been watching..you need to watch 'Mars Attacks'.
It's interesting to note that Spielberg made this before he was married and a father... In fact if one knows about his family history (which informs a lot of his work, specially his latest "The Fablemans") it's easy to interpret his view of "family" being a roadblock to reach enlightenment and/or happiness. Later on he has said that, as he has now a family of his own, he would've ended the movie differently.
IMO what made early Spielberg so successful was that the true horror of his movie's is the breakdown of the American Family caused by the fact that the subrbs are not a safe haven from the forces of nature beyond man's understanding.
Great video for a classic & yes Lance Henriksen was in tones of movies Close Encounters, Aliens, The Terminator, The Last Samurai etc. You guys should watch The Thing, EnemyMine etc.
In the special edition there is a scene where Roy and his wife go to a sham government press conference where they publicly deny the existence of UFOs to get civilians to disbelieve the aliens. In that sequence Jillian tells Roy that Barry was abducted. Also there's a sequence where Roy goes nuts the morning after his break down and starts throwing dirt and garbage into his house to start building his mini Devil's Tower. That's what pushes his wife to take the kids and go. Both scenes were cut for time but are really good and add more weight to the craziness Roy is experiencing and the bewilderment that Jillian is caught up in after Barry is taken. Definitely watch those scenes if you can!
Watch The Fabelmans to learn more about Steven Spielberg. He was fascinated by filming a model train wreck. Richard Dreyfuss plays with a model train in this movie. Also, there were advisors on UFOs for this movie. Also, Spielberg’s parents divorced, an experience that he would portray in his films from the point of view of a child.
1. $2,500 globe in 1977. Imagine how much that sucker would be today. 2. That ATC has a great set of pipes 3. I went with my family when I was a kid and got to visit the Devils Tower. 4. Love it. One of the top 10 movies to watch before you die. 5. The odds of Roy finding Jillian as easily as he did are about the same as this happening in the first place. 6. I worked at a movie theater when this came out. AWESOME😁 7. "We're going to need a bigger mountain" 😱 8. If it didn't change the outcome and since his marriage was over, Roy and Jillian should have hooked up.
Thanks for sharing. That was Bishop. And I wanted to recommend reacting to "Contact" for your alien run if you haven't seen it already until Jen said she needs to see actual aliens. Not to spoil it but let's just say it scratches that itch in a different way. Still, it's a great film in its own right if she can get past that. Another incredible alien movie you have to react to is "Arrival" with Amy Adams (not Charlie Sheen). But the ultimate of this genre is definitely "2001: A Space Odyssey". You really have to prepare yourself for it and put yourself in a different mindset as it will be unlike anything you've ever seen before. And be ready for what you may think are slow periods of the movie. But realize that it's part of the experiential nature of the film. And in many ways a necessary component that takes us on the journey of the film more effectively. Then commit yourself to watch it at least a few times to really start to understand it. As well as watch the sequel "2010: The Year We Make Contact" to get most of the answers to the questions 2001 makes you ask. Lastly, James and the Giants Peach was a childhood favorite. And my grandfather was an extra in the live-action movie of it. No joke. He was one of the townspeople who ran outside in their pajamas when the townsfolk first saw the giant peach. What a character that guy was.
Fun fact: If you look closely when the mothership arrives you can see R2D2. I really recomend you to watch the making of this movie. Its amazing all the things they did for this movie. I love it so much!!!!
My Staffordshire bull terrier also has separation anxiety, we have to leave doors open when leaving him alone in the house because he chews the doors to get in. Have you guys tried CBD Dog oil? I got that for my nervous wreck of a 9 year old dog and this cbd oil seems to help a decent amount. He doesnt chew doors now and it helps with his arthritis. Its different for every dog though and you need to give dogs different amounts of the oil depending on their weight. With that we also have one of those super indestructible kong toys and we fill that with stuff like chicken/peanut butter for him and that seems to stop him from causing carnage while we arent at home so i thoroughly recommend those haha
When the mother ship first appears between the rocks you can see an upside R2-D2! At the Smithsonian you can see the model with other little Easter eggs built in.
There is a cut scene where a big press conference is held with all of the people that were waiting along the road after the helicopter scene where Barry’s disappearance is discussed.
Jillian does tell Roy about the abduction right after it happens. Roy waves Jillian down while she's being hounded by reporters at the press conference. She then turns to Roy and says "They got him". When they meet up later, they both already know why the other is out there. She doesn't need to ask him for help. His obsessive search for answers is already the best he can do to help her and she knows that. Even with the concern for her son, she understands that there is something larger happening. She allows herself to be swept up in the moment in part because she thinks/feels that everything will be OK. At that point she's found the aliens. They seem to be friendly. I think she fully expects to get her son back at that point.
6:15 Holden: This is what our living room looked right right after Boston...Very next scene on the screen is the little boy wearing a Boston University sweatshirt. LOL
Steve McQueen, shortly before he died, was offered the part of Roy Neary by Spielberg. McQueen loved the script and wanted to do the movie but he turned it down because he didn’t think he could cry onscreen.
You didn't have the pleasure to see this when it came out. My parents took me to see this in Drake's Circus cinema in Plymouth, UK, when it came out. I was stunned by it on the big screen. It was my favourite movie of all time until Blade Runner came out in 82. It was a golden era of movies. Unfortunately I watched the Making Of documentary years later and it spoiled a a lot of my childhood dreams. Don't do it. There was a Special Edition in the cinema afterwards where you got to see Roy Neary going into the mothership. It was a short extension but I loved it. He burst into tears when he saw the splendour of what they created. Stephen Spielberg always said that this is the movie that dates him. Purely because he didn't want to split up a family. I think grew up in the wrong time to really realise how spectacular at the time
3 min in and I just spit out my Mt. Dew when Holden agreed to all of Jen’s asks and then leaned into the mic. Just poured some out for them alien babies!!
Roy and Jillian did talk about Barry being missing, she mentions it to him when she's being hounded by the media and they are discussing it during the car ride to Devil's Tower before they see the sleeping cattle.
You are totally right when you said maybe they aren't afraid because of the effect they have on you. I've been abducted all my life and every time a sense of calm and comfort comes over me, like it is a dream. There is no fear, because these beings are telepathic. They project peace and love and calm. You literally cannot move because you know they will move you. It is the feeling of being fondled by your mother as a baby.
One of my favorite movies. I love that it can be seen in two very different lights - "Thoughtful, charming tale about imagination and adventure and aliens and wonder" and "Man has horrifying encounter he cannot explain, nobody believes him; he destroys his family and nearly loses his mind in pursuit of the truth"
Lacombe was played by director, Francois Truffault. His character was inspired by UFO researcher Jacques Vallee. While filming this, Spielberg wondered about changing it by having an alien be stay on Earth. This became the movie ET.
I also think they should make a sequel, more character-based, showing the human aftermath of these encounters; have Roy show back up, trying to reconnect with all the people he knew from this incident.
It doesn't appear you watched the Special edition or Director's Cut (I forget which has certain extra scenes) where there is a scene with Jillian with the Press. Roy learns about it from that as well as attending a briefing by the air force along with her. And on their way she jokes to him that the investigators she had spoken to asked if she had seen any "strangers" in the neighborhood. I didn't get the impression that she was nonchalante about Barry's disappearance. I think since she knew who took him her greatest hope was in following her gut to where the ETs were going to be. I don't think their kiss was romantic so much as just a spontaneous acknowlegement of a soul changing shared experience. Him going on the ship is problematic. We don't know if his trip was conditional or not. Most people assume he would be gone as long as the others they dropped off. But it is still conceivable that he was only going temporarily, possibly to have secrets of the universe imparted to him. A chosen messenger of somewhat Biblical proportions. You cannot discount the power and prospect of the psychic aspect and how it plays here. Considering the time dilation they had to have been aware that the friends and families of the people they abducted would be gone by the time they returned and their original lives would no longer be. That does seem to be a little cold and dispassionate.
I think you two would love watching the TV series "The Expanse". I am a big sci-fi fan, and The Expanse has become my all time favorite sci-fi TV series. It's about what would life be like is humans lived and worked through out the solar system. Mars as an independent colony. Humans working and living in the asteroid belt and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. The story line is fantastic. The acting is top-notch. Production is excellent. The science in the show is very very realistic. No phasers. No force fields. No warp drive (though the ship engines are still sci-fi in that they can get you to anywhere in the solar system at a fraction of the time it would take otherwise). No artificial gravity; the ships are designed like tall buildings, that always fly up, pushing the floor towards you, and as long as the engines are working, you have simulated gravity. Very very realistic way of doing artificial gravity. Half way to your destination, you flip the ship 180deg, and decelerate at 1/3rd G.
We're continuing our Alien week(s) with Close Encounters of the Third Kind! I hope you all enjoy watching along with us.
Have you two seen warrior. It’s awesome. Would love to see you do that if you’ve not seen it.
Jw is Steven Spielberg’s 2005 “War of the Worlds” going to be apart of the alien movie reactions?
Richard Dreyfus and the other lady had a deep connection because of the alien encounter. They travelled across the country in a car for hours and hours and endured dangerous hardships against a conspiratorial government, so there was plenty of time to talk about her missing son and their lives up to that point. Is Paul one of those movies? JK lol
Can you please watch a show called henry danger it is a action comedy show it is r
Really funny you can watch on prime video
I almost spit my food out when Jen asked Holden if he'd fornicate with her if she was an alien.
i was eating a sandwich and bit my tongue when she said that.
Jillian absolutely DID tell Roy about Barry's abduction: right before the meeting with the Air Force, she says "They got him."
This movie is one of the first of this type of genre. Such a classic movie. It opened up a lot of people's minds and started a wave of new "alien" inspired movies as opposed to the 50's - 60's outer space troupe movies.
I feel like if he didn’t win for Star Wars then Williams would have won for this movie. Also another prime example of Spielberg’s daddy issues.
@@kingofthemooners09 I think he should have won for both.
The way I thought of the kiss and her not mentioning her kid was the result of the subconscious draw. All the people who had the same attraction seemed very single-minded (Roy doesn't mention his family after they left either), and they felt a need to express themselves. She does tell him they have Barry! What were you people watching? Right when she sees him at the press conference!
6:19 "This is what our living room looked like after Boston".
6:23 Kid is wearing a "Boston" university shirt.
IT'S ALL CONNECTED LIKE THE MCU!
It was not a romantic kiss near the end. It was a kiss of emotional understanding about something bigger than they are. Secondly, his wife left him.
Almost all American reaction videos seem to misunderstand the kiss. Puritan heritage I guess.
They don't get either of these points....too bad 😵💫
@@johnp.olivas8330 To paraphrase Ripley from Aliens :"Did IQs just drop over a generation?"
Fun fact for Jen. Both of Phoebe Buffays parents are in this. Her dad is Lacombes translator/assistant and her mum is Roys wife.
OMG, you're right! I'd never made that connection before.
Wow. Good eye. I knew about Teri Garr, but I didn't realize it was Bob Balaban who played Phoebe's Dad. He looks so different without his beard. I recognized him from "2010: The Year We Make Contact"

Yeah, I believe it was a gorilla costume.
That was Lance Henriksen(Bishop) in this movie. This is one of my favorite films. I have a book that came out a few years ago that is a retrospective look at the making of the film, as well as the film itself.
Love how you didn't realize how you said that the fridge mess looked like what Boston did and the kid had a shirt that said Boston. lol
Now remember, we saw this in a theater with dolby sound, and it was MIND BLOWING, on a twenty foot high screen.
The galaxy is on Orion’s Belt
I saw this film in cinema with my parents when I was 7 years old. Changed my outlook on life and still remember that night, driving home and looking at the stars. Have the original LP Vinyl also.
When Holden said 'This is what our living room looked like after Boston' and that kid came out with a Boston Univ. shirt on.. I lost it !!
The cocker spaniel that comes out of the spaceship is (was) Spielberg's dog, Elmer. You also see Elmer as a pup in Jaws early on in the film.
Here is the bit from Wikipedia about "Close Encounters" that describes his role:
"François Truffaut as Claude Lacombe, a French government scientist in charge of UFO-related activities in the United States. During filming, Truffaut used his free time to write the script for The Man Who Loved Women."
Truffaut was a prolific and highly celebrated movie director, part of the French "New Wave" of filmmakers.
@@TheDietrichDanielsya. a lot of these reactors do that. they miss important details because of their talking.
@@omega311888 These guys are idiotic
@@johnp.olivas8330 Different cuts of the movie leave out the conference scene.
"This is what our living room looked like after Boston..."
The kid in the scene has Boston Univ. on his shirt. LOL
Lance Henriksen.
@@LoungeActVideos Yeah. My bad.
I got a kick out of it when you said *that's what our floor looked like after Boston * and the kid was wearing a Boston shirt...
The tunnel scene is in Mobile. The scene where the McDonald's power goes out is in Chickasaw al. The scene where the trucks move out of the hanger is in Mobile. The scene at the train station is in Bay Minette Al
For me creativity behind this movie is mindblowing.
Fun Fact: The design of the lights on the underside of the big UFO is actually an inverted view of the Los Angeles cityscape.
It is indeed Bishop's actor. Lance Henriksen who for Jen also was in an episode of X-Files called Millenium which apparently was it's own series.
This was the very first Spielberg movie I watched on VHS when I was younger. The second was ET, and the third being HOOK.
It was nominated for 9 Oscars:
Best Director
Best Supporting Actress, Melinda Dillon
Best Sound Effects (Won)
Best Sound Editing
Best Visual Effects
Best Film Editing
Best Production Design
Best Cinematography (Won)
Best Original Score.
At the Air and Space museum in Virginia, they have a model of the Space ship in the same chamber as the real Space Shuttle.
The Vet recommended giving catnip to my sisters dog for anxiety and it worked. Apparently has the opposite affect than it does on cats.
"Project Blue Book" (History Channel 2019-2020) was an interesting TV show set during the Cold War. One episode has the main character on the set of "Close Encounters" as an advisor. Too bad it didn't get another season or two. It did the 1950s vibe really well.
6:20
And right after that comment, a toddler with a Boston shirt walks into frame. lol
We never put Christmas presents under the tree until Christmas Eve, for this exact reason.
Richard Dreyfuss character was based on Professor J. Allen Hynek, who reported on cases from Project Blue Book. Most scenes in this film were inspired by those cases.
@John Millan - and the French guys was based on Jacques Vallée - and his classic amazing books about UFOs such as:
-"Dimensions: A Casebook of Alien Contact"
-"Confrontations: A Scientist's Search for Alien Contact"
-"Revelations: Alien Contact and Human Deception"
Interesting facts: Barry's mom actually played the mom in "A Christmas Story." Teri Garr was also in movies like "Mr. Mom" and "Young Frankenstein." Great movie. A little slow at times. I loved watching it with you guys though. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and I'm so glad I found you this year!😀👍❤
I just have to say that Jen's "WIFE EST. 2022" shirt is totally awesome. Also, have you guys considered watching the Jodie Foster movie Contact for alien week? Seems like it would be a good fit
Props to Jen; that was Lance Henrickson! Lance Henriksen as Robert
the Devil's Tower scene did go on long BUT when this came out the theater audiences just watched in awe and time wasn't an issue. you need to spice up your alien theme with something REALLY different from what you've been watching..you need to watch 'Mars Attacks'.
To confirm- yes, that is Lance Henriksen (Bishop). He was in a string of films in the late 70s in minor roles.
Separation anxiety. I cured my dog by kenneling her in a separate room for a couple months when I went to bed and stuff and she stopped.
François Truffaut played the French scientist
20:04 No surprise there. I bet a lot of people didn’t even know that mountain existed at the time.
Da alien 👽 encounter had me spooked 😱 lol 😂 🤪🤪😂😂🤪🤪
1. $2,500 globe in 1977. Imagine how much that sucker would be today.
2. That ATC has a great set of pipes
AWESOME😁
7. "We're going to need a bigger mountain" 😱
8. If it didn't change the outcome and since his marriage was over, Roy and Jillian should have hooked up.
YES it was Bishop from the film Aliens, Lance Henriksen. He has quite the filmography. Starting back in 1961.
The model of the mothership is on display at the Udvar-Hazey Air and Space museum in DC
You guys should totally watch Signs. It's a good movie.
Fun fact: If you look closely when the mothership arrives you can see R2D2. I really recomend you to watch the making of this movie. Its amazing all the things they did for this movie. I love it so much!!!!
Yes, That was Lance Henriksen (Bishop) who played the assistant in the background.
13:52 I did not expect a Rush E reference in a Holden Hardman video, but I'm not complaining! XD
That was so tedious to edit in lol
@Jen, the 1980 Special Edition includes extra scenes of Roy going inside the ship.
There is a cut scene where a big press conference is held with all of the people that were waiting along the road after the helicopter scene where Barry’s disappearance is discussed.
Holden- this is what our living room look liked after Boston. The kid in the movie is literally is wearing a shirt that say Boston on it. 😆😆😆
At the end when you guys kept asking if that one guy was Lance Henriksen (Bishop the Android) was in it and yeah that was him. I looked it up.
The aliens cast a spell on everyone who came in contact with them, they were drawn to them like a religious experience
I'm just here for the dog tips
I think grew up in the wrong time to really realise how spectacular at the time
I'm pretty sure that Holden's last words will be "who's to say" lol. You folks make such amazing videos, love watching them!
This was supposed to be based off a actual event. But it took place sometime in the 1960's. That Project blue Book scientist/professor claimed.
My dad gives our big dog CBD to calm her down. It’s safe for dogs and just relaxes their anxiety similar to what it does to us humans.
'Anybody gonna check to see if he's ok?' LOL that is so true.
The Movie theater was packed for this great film in 1977 Glad I was there.
I had a poster of the mothership over Devil's Tower as a teen back then. Man I wish I still had it.
The house at the beginning of Close Encounters is in Baldwin County Al.
