    dj's tool restoration you have put smiles on so many previous tool owners faces! They love seeing people like yourself cleaning their tools and bringing them back to working shape! I know my dad and brother are both giving you two thumbs up with smiles on their faces! Good job.

    I clean a lot of files and have found over the years that degreasing then electrolysis tank, wire brush [brass suede leather brush] back into the tank, wire brush again, repeat if crud still coming out then then oil up and store in waxed paper. The trick is to weed out the junk before you buy. Some of the best files have been used for stirring paint or are clogged up solid with aluminum. To shift aluminum, soak in caustic soda and it dissolves out overnight.
    I have enough for several generations of my family .... ok I just love doing it and I'm a bit of a hoarder !

    Great video, and thanks for the inspiration to clean some of my dads old files. I love restoring old tools and definitely use files a lot woodworking and just daily crafting of projects. Carb cleaner is awesome stuff but I would love to see you possibly wear protective gloves with that stuff. I’m not a Karen or soft ass city boy, but there is a short list of stuff I don’t really touch bare handed if I can help it and carb cleaner is on that list. I also know how it is in the shop when your busy and it can be an inconvenience to grab ppe, but carb cleaner can soak into your skin fast and is extremely carcinogenic. Keep on doing your thing sir, I love your style man🤙🏼

      Hope you get to your dads tools, nice to have some personal history to those tools, think of all the things they have done, yea I know it is a bad habit hard one to break, I will try though!

    Nice video. I like files also. I've used them since I was a child. It's a pity that many tools are now made in China, India or Southeast Asia, even tools from famous brands. Greetings from Mexico.

      I am still learning about files: I do think all countries have good quality tools, you just have to look closely at them, and thank you for watching!

    I like to use my wood lathe, and 1 inch wood dowel to turn down different shapes for my handles... But I am retired so I have lots of time doing that as a rainy day project

    How do you like the RustOleum compared to the Evaporust and vinegar, looks like thats your new go to.

    • @djstoolrestorations
      @djstoolrestorations  Год назад +1

      I do like the RustOleum product better than the Evaporust, I think it is a little more aggressive and works quicker, it has lasted me longer than the Evaporust, plus it was free, given to me as a gift!!

    I luv files I don't have as many as u though. I use vinegar 2 clean mine though it's cheep and works for me, 1 thing I do is store mine vertical and not laying down I think that's a better way of storing them.

    • @djstoolrestorations
      @djstoolrestorations  Год назад +1

      I agree, I have 29 of them hanging and not touching, back in the day they would ship them wrapped in heavy brown paper, I store my extras in burlap soaked in oil in a metal tin, so they do not touch or other tools. I only need into it maybe once a year and I am the only one in my shop so no others will touch them, and I two have used vinegar and I like it, but the Rustoleum was a gift and I like it also works very well, though the vinegar is cheaper!

    I have several files that need cleaning but several from my days as a machinist that are worn or damaged that need to be thrown away. Wish I could find some thing to use them for…

      Thanks, I try that next, the way I did it was slow I know but I took my time to look for damage and trying to get them as good as I could, I know some had more damage than others, but I want to try and give some of these tools more life.
