Pretty sure BeamNG would scratch that physics niche you were looking for. I used to watch Lazarbeam drive off cliffs and smash his cars into heaps of scrap. Game is pretty much a giant physocs sandbox.
This brings back memories but for what it's worth, I'm with you. I love classic... and I'd love to play classic with new maps and content 1-60. That would be the bees knees but Bliz has gone off in a different, less fulfilling direction in the modern game. I don't know if the war within will be any better, still deciding whether to try it.

For the record the shitty physics game you see all over youtube shorts is modded GTA, I'm not sure about some other driving simulators though.
