- A nasty controversy is brewing in Olympic waters with one month until the Paris opening ceremony. Les Carpenter, Olympics reporter for The Washington Post, joins CBS News to explain why the city's iconic Seine River is still falling short of the requirements needed before athletes dive in.

my father worked for the water district in maine for years, fish help clean the river as well
What makes you think there are no fish? There are 30+ species of fish living in Parisian section of the Seine

Why does it take the olympics to keep your main source of water and main feature of your country/city clean?
Centuries of using the river as a human toilet not even from sewage pipes people just did it straight in
When there is a big rainstorm in New York City the same thing happens. Rainwater runoff and street garbage mixes with sewage and flows into the ocean. Doesn’t just happen in Europe.
Ambitious goal they set. I applaud the effort.
The River Thames in London is also very polluted. So are all the rivers and the sea. No one does anything to clean it. Disgusting....😮

Hearing the plans for the 2024 Olympics reminds me a lot of the movie "Under Paris" on Netflix.
The Seine is a truly democratic toilet. Everyone gets to contribute.
Glad they're getting attention. They've taken the real natural river out of that body of water. Its concrete and run off. Rivers need to flow naturally with trees and wild life for it to be able to manage itself and stay clean. Rivers need to be cleaner. People can manage waste better. I wouldn't swim in that either.

A river going through the middle of a city will never be clean!
Rats and vermins walking by the hedge of the river, water from streets, when raining will inevitably leak down to the river, no matter what you build to collect water, there's always spillage over.
Visit Singapore, they did that with concrete base rivers

I’m glad they are spending money to clean up the river - benefits a lot more people than Olympic entertainment.

my local river was definitely bad in the summer. seems the playboaters have baced off summer paddles substantially. to be on the safe side i used to moutghwash with southern comfort 100 proof then take a swig to clean my throat. at least it kept those spots clean without issues
I went to Paris last month and even took a trip on Seine and water didnt look much better than in other european capitols. But stream was pretty strong there.

What the hell Olympic event involves swimming in a river/lake? Never even heard of such a thing. All these new Olympic events some of them are just ridiculous.
Triathalons are always like that, man. So are the very long distance swimming events. Every time, man. Every time. Nothing new. Not sure how many times it's been in a river, but it's always open water.
