God I'd kill to see this concept done justice. Could you imagine a fully animated MJ movie in the format of Moonwalker or Captain EO and the style of something like Enter the Spider-verse?

The art style felt like it was the film Delgo or that recent wizard of Oz film that looks like it would belong in the bargain bin at a Walmart
Sprinkle in a little bit of Foodfight and Hoodwinked, then you got this movie
To the point where I had a false memory at one point that this special was made in 2013 because I confused the release date for Oz with this
As a Michael Jackson fan, when I heard about this coming out and saw the clips, I cringed harder than the hologram show they did a few years back. The amazing thing that Michael Jackson did as an entrepreneur was to make himself a brand as much as an artist, which was done before, but rarely in control of said artist. However, the problem is that in death, he has no control, and he ends up being more of a brand than an artist. Slap his name, his face, his music, his entire iconography onto anything and guaranteed that it will get some kind of reaction, and enough to call SOME kind of success. This was a well intended mess of a special that I'm glad wasn't successful enough to warrant a re-watch every year. I hope that somebody some day can find a way to make a movie with Michael's music to help guide the experience since he made music from a surrealist perspective like the Beatles, but the funky groove of James Brown.

I am sure that his family approved this and I'm not talking about his estranged relatives, I'm talking about his son and daughter.
Lmao, I was around 10 when it aired, and I was at the height of my MJ phase. And oh boy, I thought it was the best movie that I ever watched.

While I’m conflicted about milking MJs image after his death, I think it’s important to note that Michael actually wanted to create an animated kids movie before he died. It was on his to-do list, and the Estate finished it.

Micheal jackson being a KH summon would be neat but that would also mean that disney would have to somehow own MJ's image (or estate) and thats too much to think about given how they're already dominating most things...its only a matter of time.
Technically there is Captain E.O which used to play at Disney world. Though I have no idea if Disney still owns the rights after his passing.

The special was certainly a cynical cash grab more than anything. Some elements were beautiful though,including the transformation scene before Michael leaves. But overall I agree that it wasn't all that it was cracked and hyped up to be. They should have tried a lot harder given that the MJ Estate always has the highest earnings every year since MJ died.
They need a Jackson enthusiast or his kids to watch over this stuff.

I actually just learned about this special last October when I caught it on CBS with family. My parents we're just randomly watching this one out of curiosity as MJ fans too. I wasn't too impressed with what I saw out of it myself and I immediately noticed some of the stiff animation especially when MJ showed up. I also can't really tell if this was just made to be a cynical cash grab or out of good intentions to be a (rather weak) tribute to the King of Pop. It feels like the scenario could go either way or both. I think a lot more could've been done better with something like this special or just not have it made at all. It's a weird and bland one nevertheless. Good review! And Merry.....Hallowmas?

I remember last year my mom called me telling me to turn the tv on cbs to watch this. Lets just say she wouldn't let me hang up and forced me to watch the whole thing with her over the phone. It was a painful experience I hope to never experience again.
I remember seeing some commercials for this special, and it looked like one of those discount Pixar/Dreamworks animated rip-off films you'd find in a bargain bin from Wal-Mart.
Pretty much of a downgrade as a tribute to the King of Pop himself.

Ik MJ loved horror and Halloween but that special was absolutely terrible. I was so excited for it but couldn't get half way through it.
It's no surprise that he loves horror, considering he did the theme to the sequel to the original version of Willard (i.e Ben) and An American Werewolf In London was what inspired him to get John Landis to direct the music video for the song.
Is it bad that my standards are so low that, "whelp, at least it doesn't look like an abomination" is a positive for me now?
On the topic of basing a piece of work on a singer/popstar there were two games based on or using David Bowie's music, one of them is Omnikron and the other is his attempt at a CD Rom that was a promotion for his album Black Tie White Noise in particular the song Jump They Say. There is also that jukebox musical All Shook Up which is based around Elvis Presley.

The Television station I work at played this in 2017 and RE-AIRED this for the 2018 Halloween season. The fact that I was forced to make sure this was airing properly twice made me want to split my head open.

I actually saw this when it aired, and for what it offered it was alright. Even though the characters were all forgettable, the songs featured will always be unforgettable and timeless.
