Hey Pan, have you heard of the short making the rounds recently called "Mike and Melissa"? I feel it's kinda up your alley and you should talk about it in a video sometime!
"Boomerang. It's all coming back to you" That's actually a really clever name and a much more clever slogan. How stupid I was that I'm just now realizing why the channel is called Boomerang?
Except they don’t focus on old cartoons anymore. They still have some but most of their lineup are now shows that are relatively new. Since they just kept airing the same stuff over and over fewer people watched. They added newer and more popular shows to attract new viewers, but then they didn’t bother to create more numbers. So the bumpers would highlight shows from the 60s and 70s, but they aired during shows from the 90s or 00s. It was lazy and didn’t make sense.
It’s been dead for a while. I mean hell the apartment I live at now literally provides cable for free, but I still couldn’t be bothered to set it up. It’s just shocking to me that in a world where I can get access to full series of like 300+ shows/movies for $9.99 commercial free that people are willing to shell out $55 for a commercial ridden strictly scheduled series of shows that are available elsewhere for a better price.

Omg same. Boomerang was my childhood. It even got to the point where I got like 95% of the bumpers engraved in my memory. And if there’s one thing I remember vividly was being extremely distraught after seeing the rebrand in 2015, and then I had abandoned the channel after about a week later.
Same! I still hear that jingle in my head...also, until that movie came out, I always thought The Banana Splits was some weird dream I had. I remember seeing that on Boomerang.
I didn't expect to get taken on a Rebelde nostalgia trip, I watched that all the time when it aired on Univision in the US. I even wore a star sticker on my head like the main character LOL
@@antoniomaldonado8876 Yeah, during the late 2000s Boomerang in Latin America changed it's programing to live-action teen dramas/comedies (mostly from Australia). I thought the branding was super quirky and loved that the channel had cool and unique blocks like Boomeraction, Boomeroyalty, and Boomerang Zoo. Virtually all of this was erased when it rebranded in 2015. The new look wasn’t representative of its vintage programming, recently produced shows were added to the lineup, and the blocks disappeared. The variety and more obscure older shows ceased, only leaving the bigger franchises like Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry, and Looney Tunes. I guess people can watch DVDs or use the streaming service, but the bland schedule certainly wouldn’t want me to tune in anyway. It’d be nice for more CN classics to air because for most, either only the first few seasons or nothing at all was released.
I hate that they show late 90s-mid 2000s era CN shows (Chowder, KND, Dexter's Lab, etc.) during the night, early morning hours and not regular, decent hours.
@@joman66 Well I hate the fact that cartoon Network and boomerang have become complete garbage. I started watching cartoon Network in the late 90s early 2000's and that was the best time ever. It's very clear the future lies on the internet with apps. I kind of wish they would just put the TV channels down as an act of kindness.
Monstersreview pretty much took the words right out of my mouth. And to think, if CN respected Boomerang a lot more to let them be as experimental as they were and didn't greedily reprimand them (I know this because I would see quickly read schedules within the week on the station's guide and the airtimes would change certain programming within the days approaching), they could continue to have their cake and eat it. Variety programming (classic, modern or even more obscure) on regular TV, internet, DVD or streaming service -- it could be accessible to any platform if you think about it. (Sigh) Why? Just why?
I hated when they just dropped the classic/early/mid-90's/00's show mix without warning to dump all the then-recent stuff on the network--transforming it into CN Two. It's like how Nicktoons turned from a channel that showed Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Kablam! Rocket Power, etc. into a channel that only has like 10 shows on it and you can watch three of them on Nickelodeon.
"You can just watch whatever you want now at any time" This is the problem with binge culture. Sometimes I just want to watch a bunch of random shows in random order, its why I still watch Toonami Aftermath stream. I'm not going to sit down and watch all of Ed Edd n Eddy in a single go.
It would be cool if streaming services had a shuffle feature where you get a random TV episode or movie. And you could set preferences for it, like, sort for genre or animation or age group.
Thought I was only one who wants some sort of playlist feature on these streaming sites. It makes it where I don't have to be hands on with my remote all the time. It gives me that tv schedule feeling but I control what I want to see
Same! one of my favorite things about the CN app is that it shuffle plays shows for you. I wish other streaming services would do that. Especially Hulu since it has a lot of CN and classic Nick cartoons
"It was the same shows on repeat for over a decade." This also described the original Toonami. The same small handful of 13 episode series on repeat ad nauseam.
@@anueutsuho7425 Actually Cowboy Bebop never aired on Toonami until the 2010s, now it aired on Adult Swim pretty consistently throughout the century, I must have watched the entire series like 7-10 times now just based of Adult Swim reruns alone.
Ah yes, the mid 2000's dark era of Boomerang here in Mexico. It was a really bad time to be alive. It tried to turn Boomerang into a hip and cool channel for "la chavisa". The funniest part is that the Mexican version of "Rebelde" was a cheap copy of the originan Argentinian version "Rebelde Way" Also i remember most of the shows that Boomerang was airing were all foreign.
In Latin America (or just South America?) we currently have an oldies channel called Tooncast. Basically functions like og Boomerang but with more 90s shows
@@rafaelcervantes4143 Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the internet in Mexico and South (or Latin) America sub par? I'm asking because I think that may be the reason they still exist on those regions for that reason.
when I was a kid I always thought of Boomerang as a time capsule of sorts and that it would never add anything new to it. It was just a place where you could look at old memories and classics that started it all.
I wish that is how it stayed forever. Streaming the shows on an app just doesn't feel the same as it did watching the old boomerang. I liked the repetitiveness of the bumpers, shorties and groovies.
I was introduced to all the Hanna Barbera, Tom and Jerry, and the Looney Tunes cartoons through Boomerang, So I can't describe how much appreciated the Channel. Though it was pretty obvious that it wasn't given enough care, back then and now.
Streaming services took off because you could watch almost all of the shows you wanted by subscribing to about two or three different services, which was way cheaper than cable. Now, everyone wants their shows on their own service, meaning you now have to subscribe to more services, and the they're constantly increasing their prices (at least Netflix is), making it more expensive than cable. Cable will be back.
The problem i have is paying for channels youll never watch that dont appeal to you at all when you want other channels. Like why cant i trade TLC, BET, and (not joking) the Scientology Channel for HBO and Cinemax where i can have more movies to watch. On channels i WANT to watch.
@@KaiserMattTygore927 Within the past year ISPs and government have started cracking down on piracy. So no, piracy is becoming or prevalent, it's just getting harder.
"Boomerang" is supposed to be a joke on how it's like a throwback, and how memories come back to you... having new shit on it means we should rename it "Ball".
A life lesson I was taught from Boomerang in 2015. If they can't be bothered to play it, hoist anchor and set sail. Piracy is the response to bad decisions on a channel. XD
Death by neglect. So that thing came full circle. In the 60s and 70s, children's programming consisted of the station owners put something on for their kids or an eager wannabe TV exec exiled to the farm report and kids program for getting to handsy with said station owner's mistress. It wasn't until the mid 70s that corporate America realized parents bought stuff for their kids and kids were easier to pitch. Boomerang suffered the same neglect as Cartoon Network, it just had a shorter fall. The saddest part is that enormous library is rarely used. There are a dozen Flintstones clones they never used like the Roman Holidays. Even more mystery solving clones like Scooby Doo and so many video game cartoons from Pacman to Dragon's Lair. Its like having the Library of Congress and only sticking to Dan Brown and John Grisham.
To be fair, they are clones. But really good shows are not shown. I always found it weird that The Smurfs is not part of HB properties anymore, that show was THE cashcow in the 80s.
Boomerang the channel may've been forgotten by Cartoon Network, but it'll still live on as that thing that non-sit down restaurants play along with the news, and is never loud enough for you to hear it.
The thing that I loved the most was one of the promos, where Doggie Daddy sang to Augie Doggie "Young at Heart", with the original audio sang by Jimmy Durante. It was beautiful, my dad loved it, and it reflected the moments that we both watched TV and enjoyed all of it. That was the true spirit of Boomerang.
for me, the Josie and the pussycats music video was my Jabberjaws. it was quite fun to see those ladies change styles for each era, then it just got tiresome
It'll never happen, but I would like to see Boomerang go OTA and become a broadcast digital subchannel like MeTV or Antenna. It would fill a niche (especially now that Kids Click is gone) and since it is so low cost, it works for having a low budget. Plus, since Boomerang already doesn't get a lot of viewers since it's typically only available in the highest tiers of cable/satellite packages, there's a decent chance it would get more viewers as a broadcast network. They could even use it to advertise the main CN channel.
This is a great idea. IMO MeTV is currently the best OTA channel you can watch. Adding something like Boomerang would really help add some variety to the stale OTA channel line up. Even here in 2019 a lot of people still watch OTA channels, granted most of the people I know who watch OTA channels are in there late 70's and older but I'm sure they'd love watching classic cartoons.
I didn't know KidsClick was discontinued when I looked it up and I was planning to watch it during mornings to see Angry Birds Toons (I never got to see the show on TV itself) and I only saw a few obscure cartoons I didn't know about (Oggy and the Cockaroaches I barely knew). Could've done great as a new channel 24/7 though oh well... :(
The shorts were arguably the best part of Boomerang. That's how I found out about Soul Coughing, one of my favorite bands, from that Betty Boop short they used to air on it.
I wish that Boomerang would go back to the way it was in 2009-2012. It had all of the old cartoons, but also played Batman the Animated Series, Swat Kats, and Teen Titans occasionally. It served its purpose of airing classic cartoons, while also airing those great shows, and newer Looney Tunes shorts.
My parents never bought a TV package that had Cartoon Network, so I was stuck with Boomerang. And I have to say that having these old cartoons as one of my only options led me to get into these older shows. Sure you can look them up nowadays, but what kid is going to search for old stuff when you can easily get new shows on streaming services any time they want. The time of Boomerang was probably limited from the start, but I felt like it always served a vital purpose of allowing generations of kids to see soo many old classics.
When he said "it's all coming back to you" I had a resurgence of my life force as all those memories came back and that banger commercial song echoed through my head. Now I know why they called it boomerang.
Man boomerang was so important to me while I was growing up. Seeing the PPG , Dexter's Lab, Swat Kats, and Justice Leauge was the cool as hell. Shit just blew my god damn mind
You know it's time like these I'm reminded how much i genuinely miss watching Hannah Barbera cartoons on Boomerang before it went down the toilet by mostly showing either old CN shows or Brand New Ones that they completely abandon there , anyone else?😟
Boomerang is where I got into The Jetsons and Looney Tunes. I also watched Space Ghost and Josie & The Pussycats well before I had any idea that they were revived decades later as edgier spin-offs
I'm going to guess that the reason the Tom & Jerry shorts are screwed up is because it had three distinct studios working on it during its run, with multiple resurrections. That may explain why there are volumes with volumes inside them. It's not very clear but that would be my guest. -also duck dogers review when-
In Mexico, Boomerang was all about old animation, until they changed it circa 2007 to appeal to the "tween" demographic. It was recently they brought back animation, but as a mix bag of old animation, new animation and new animation named after old animation, but, to that point there was something better, TOONCAST, just like a Boomerang for Cartoon Cartoons.
I remember growing up on Boomerang, because I usually had it on all the time unless there was something I wanted to watch on the main cartoon channels. It's probably my favourite channel of all time simply for the aesthetic and bumpers alone.
Let’s be honest, even though so many of us grew up with those old Boomerang bumpers and are nostalgic, they really needed to be retired after airing for over a decade. It’s amazing Boomerang lasted for as long as they did, since you can only really see the same thing over and over so many times. And now that they’re gone, we can truly appreciate them. Some of them were goddamn nightmare fuel though
If he reviews action league now, I would be so happy. It was one of my favorite shows, and was as if we were looking into the mind of a kid who's playing with their toys.
@@thewittywhygaming6487 yea action league now is one of the earlier pieces of stop motion animation (as well as Gumby, Rankin bass specials, Wallace and gromet) that predated RUclips and even robot Chicken if I'm not mistaken. ALN is on the brink of falling into the void of obscurity
I was reeeeeeeeeeeeeally pissed when they changed Boomerang in its past incarnation. I didn't have it until about 2007, and I loved it. Idk how many summers I spent watching the channel almost all day, even leaving it on in the background all day. But what you said about "having all the shows you like ready to watch on plenty of platforms" couldn't be more true. I can watch Space Ghost for twenty hours straight, which is unhealthy, but appealing to the eyes, any time I want here on RUclips, so I guess Boomerang in its former format is obsolete. RIP my favorite TV channel all-time, though
Man, that Fridays opening block brings back so many memories. I'm a pissed off kid who just got home and I'm just sick and tired from all the noise from the last five days and I have that awesome intro to welcome me into the comforting entertainment of the best cartoons of Cartoon Network.
I'm so happy you brought up SWAT KATS. That's most of what I watched on Boomerang. Back then I didn't really notice that it only had two seasons and would repeat a lot. My kid brain just ate it up. Was also nice to see other older cartoons like the Flinstones, Jetsons, and Top Cat.
Fun fact: The zoo near me had a huge section themed around Boomerang. They took it down once the channel got that makeover, But it was pretty cute while it lasted. Being an avid watcher of the channel at the time it was there, I fangirled over it like crazy.
4:15 As a kid I always thought of ways to extend a channel like Boomerang or Nicktoons Network to have a much longer life span. The plan I had was to treat the shows like they were new, and have a full show fully trinkle out every week until all the episodes of one show were released. The network would air multiple shows and have them run along aside each other. For example, their lineup of "new" episodes every friday would be of Fosters, Billy and Mandy, Camp Lazlo, and Kids Next Door. There would have been bumpers made to advertise those episodes like they were new, or just reuse the original bumpers they showed back then. Looking back at that I think it's not a very good way of structuring your channel, because that would only make pirating feel more enticing. The only positive would really be to artificially capture the feel of watching those cartoons on premiere date, but even then the ends do not justify the means.
2:29 man that's a blast from the past. I really miss those old bumpers from boomerang. I grew up watching boomerang a fair chunk of my time and it's a shame that most of it you either have to buy, yar har, or hope it's on vrv/the paid service now
When I was a kid/teen I had a strange interest in those old toys that use to show up during those Boomerang Bumpers. Never did find them anywhere in person but to this day. I kind of still want to get my hands on one. Maybe someday when I'm not flat broke.
Cosmic 8's Starlight Caf8 got it but I only watch specific show like yogi bear and top cat which I got on iTunes lol. But once they add QuickDraw McGraw I’ll watch it agin
I grew up watching boomerang, through DirecTV. This salesman came to the door trying to sell my dish, "We don't have boomerang but we have bloomberg, which is exactly the same" Bloomberg is a news station, and I actually got to see where they film the show at when we went to the New York headquarters.
2024 update: thanks to adult swim checkered past there is more room for boomerang to air cartoons from the era it started out with, its very much on autopilot but its basically all kinda of variants of scooby doo during the day, classic looney tunes, jetsons, and the flintsones in the evening, popeye and more scooby doo late at night, and more looney tunes and tom & jerry overnight
As somebody who got rid of cable last year and has mainly relied on streaming services, thank you for bringing the Boomerang service to my attention. I had no idea...
Gosh, I remember being a kid and the only place I could watch Boomerang was at my grandpa's house because my parents wouldn't pay extra for it on Dish Network. I didn't see the bumpers very often, so they didn't annoy me and now they just remind me of spending time with my grandpa who is gone now. Thanks for the nostalgia! Great video as always!
That's what I did at my grandparents place too! Although we did eventually get it when we switched from Charter to directv. We celebrated by watching at least two hours of their shows.
I was waiting for that "This streaming service doesn't work outside of the US", because the Boomerang app that we can get (Europe/Netherlands?) that I've already seen too many mobile ads for literally only has... toddler shows. In Dutch only. :"D
Legend has it that on a cold winter's night in Urban Atlanta, you could hear chants of these words blowing with the wind: *M E A N D M Y F R I E N D S G E T N O R E S P E C T ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !*
Despite the repetition, i will never forget how much entertainment boomerang gave me as a kid! The bumpers, cartoon selection and charm had so much love poured into it. The new one lacks all of that.
The og boomerang lowkey kinda spooked me but miss the vibe so much 😭 They got greg from otgw to voice all the new bumpers so that was a plus atleast :/
Those bumpers at 2:34 hold so many memories. I loved the ones in those style. I don’t know what it was about it, but I loved those and their uniqueness. Just had something to it
At least by the time I got Boomerang, they only ever seemed to show Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo (and only the first 3 seasons of that) and the Flintstones. They didn't have to repeat so much: They had access to a TON of old Hannah Barbara cartoons that they just never showed. I never saw Thundarr air, Trixie and Dixie, Space Ghost, or really anything other than those 4 and the occasional Yogi or Quick Draw. Not getting the app until they get more selection on there (and I have more money) but it sounds like a good idea.
@@x54xHantamachine I think when I very first got it those were sometimes on in slots I couldnt watch, but shortly thereafter they vsnished from the schedule.
This app has Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers in HD which is a cool kind of hidden media from looney tunes. The rest of the app is disappointing though, if they added all the 90's cartoons I think I would have stuck with it. Maybe one day the DC, WB, CN, and Boomerang apps will all combine into one app and it will be glorious.

"You can just watch whatever you want now at any time"
This is the problem with binge culture.
Well why not?
Thought I was only one who wants some sort of playlist feature on these streaming sites. It makes it where I don't have to be hands on with my remote all the time. It gives me that tv schedule feeling but I control what I want to see
Same. sometimes I don't want to binge; I just want to watch random shows in random order.
Same! one of my favorite things about the CN app is that it shuffle plays shows for you. I wish other streaming services would do that. Especially Hulu since it has a lot of CN and classic Nick cartoons
"It was the same shows on repeat for over a decade."
This also described the original Toonami. The same small handful of 13 episode series on repeat ad nauseam.
From what I hear Cowboy Bebop wouldn't be as well known in America if it weren't for that.

The funniest part is that the Mexican version of "Rebelde" was a cheap copy of the originan Argentinian version "Rebelde Way"
Also i remember most of the shows that Boomerang was airing were all foreign.
Europan also had a darker age from us,Mexicans. They removed all old toons and now isn't Boomerang.
In Latin America (or just South America?) we currently have an oldies channel called Tooncast. Basically functions like og Boomerang but with more 90s shows

when I was a kid I always thought of Boomerang as a time capsule of sorts and that it would never add anything new to it.
Same but I knew other things from the hub channel DVDs like, tiny toons and, animaniacs.

Also I hate all the networks starting to segregate and make you pay for each one.
@@CurtisAlfeld Cable's not going to come back, instead there's going to be an industry crash as piracy grows hilariously.
XD

Me and my friends don’t deserve respect
One of my personal favorite Flintstones knock off is The Barkleys, pretty much the Flintstones but as anthro dogs in modern day (for 1971) America
To be fair, they are clones. But really good shows are not shown. I always found it weird that The Smurfs is not part of HB properties anymore, that show was THE cashcow in the 80s.
Remember Fangface? It was another Scooby-doo clone, but the "Shaggy" character was a werewolf.
Exactly! Such a large library and yet Boomerang just stuck with the same set of shows/movies. Not to mention the overused bumpers as well.
@@dragon_ninja_2186 Hell, you could fill the slot with nothing but Flintstone and Scooby Doo ripoffs, no one would ever really know.
Boomerang is how I discovered Dexter and PPG as a gen Z elementary schooler in 2007-2009. Shame that they didn't make the cut on the app.
@eblu I think they may show up onto HBO Max since it's going to have all the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim-produced shows on there.

Boomerang the channel may've been forgotten by Cartoon Network, but it'll still live on as that thing that non-sit down restaurants play along with the news, and is never loud enough for you to hear it.
Finally, that guy and his friends got respect
The thing that I loved the most was one of the promos, where Doggie Daddy sang to Augie Doggie "Young at Heart", with the original audio sang by Jimmy Durante. It was beautiful, my dad loved it, and it reflected the moments that we both watched TV and enjoyed all of it. That was the true spirit of Boomerang.
for me, the Josie and the pussycats music video was my Jabberjaws.
it was quite fun to see those ladies change styles for each era, then it just got tiresome
Honestly the whole channel at a certain point just got tiring to watch. Especially the bumpers.
I really appreciate that Digimon World menu sound effect thrown in.
Over The Air. They're all the free channels you can get with an antenna.
Cost atleast $40 a year to get boomerang or $5 a month. With that they should broaden their content/add more cartoons.
The shorts were arguably the best part of Boomerang. That's how I found out about Soul Coughing, one of my favorite bands, from that Betty Boop short they used to air on it.
im rolling im rolling im rolling ye
I wish that Boomerang would go back to the way it was in 2009-2012. It had all of the old cartoons, but also played Batman the Animated Series, Swat Kats, and Teen Titans occasionally. It served its purpose of airing classic cartoons, while also airing those great shows, and newer Looney Tunes shorts.
Literally the other day I was recommended that Jabberjaw song on Spotify.
If anybody's wondering, it's called "Jabberjaw Running Under Water"
My parents never bought a TV package that had Cartoon Network, so I was stuck with Boomerang. And I have to say that having these old cartoons as one of my only options led me to get into these older shows. Sure you can look them up nowadays, but what kid is going to search for old stuff when you can easily get new shows on streaming services any time they want.
The time of Boomerang was probably limited from the start, but I felt like it always served a vital purpose of allowing generations of kids to see soo many old classics.
Yep
Yes exactly! Shame that these days kids might never experience or know about these old shows.
When he said "it's all coming back to you" I had a resurgence of my life force as all those memories came back and that banger commercial song echoed through my head. Now I know why they called it boomerang.
"Mommy! Who is that funny cartoon man on the container of these funny shaped different colored gummy vitamins you keep giving me?"

I'm going to guess that the reason the Tom & Jerry shorts are screwed up is because it had three distinct studios working on it during its run, with multiple resurrections. That may explain why there are volumes with volumes inside them. It's not very clear but that would be my guest.

8:50 That nostalgia!

As a kid I always thought of ways to extend a channel like Boomerang or Nicktoons Network to have a much longer life span.
I hate it that the Yogi Bear music video by High School Jim wasn't mentioned. That was IMO the best one and it shown not very often.
2:29 man that's a blast from the past. I really miss those old bumpers from boomerang. I grew up watching boomerang a fair chunk of my time and it's a shame that most of it you either have to buy, yar har, or hope it's on vrv/the paid service now

Despite the repetition, i will never forget how much entertainment boomerang gave me as a kid! The bumpers, cartoon selection and charm had so much love poured into it.
The new one lacks all of that.
The og boomerang lowkey kinda spooked me but miss the vibe so much 😭
They got greg from otgw to voice all the new bumpers so that was a plus atleast :/
