Freeman's mind is what got me into PC gaming (Outside of wow) back in 08 I got Half Life remake for the Playstation 2. Then when I beat it I wanted to play HL2 so I got that new Orange Box thing and well, the rest is history. Thank you Ross Scott!

One thing I think the original Xen doesn't get enough credit for is looking genuinely, incomprehensibly alien, like it's not even a coherent pocket of spacetime.
I might be alone in this, but out of all the things I find the most remarkable in the Xen remake is the very alien plant life. Most authors/artists dedicate hours to alien people and alien animals; few manage to create alien flora that isn't just glowing fungus. I'd watch a podcast about what was the dev team's inspiration for that Xen biome alone.

It's also cool to think that nothing in Xen was native to Xen-it's all a collage of displaced species that have competed and adapted to each other and this strange environment, the Vortigaunt-Nihilanth society included. We kinda see this idea showcased most prominently in Half-Life Alyx-as only the most extremely invasive species could have survived on Xen, we see that they really grow out of control on Earth; Headcrabs, Antlions, Leeches, and the countless growths of the Quarantine Zone.

How is it that the new take on Xen instills that "seeing the open world for the first time" feeling even though it's still fairly linear? I guess the enviroment design and the visual scale of it all is just that awe dropping.

As someone who has no nostalgia for Freeman's Mind (I did not know it was a thing until today) I just wanna say that, while I am happy that the references are tickling the pickling of those who do love it, I did come here to watch Vinny, not to watch Freeman's Mind.

Visually BM's Xen Is pretty stunning but it's way padded out and boring. Interloper is the worst offender, easily the longest chapter in the game.
