  • Symptoms : White Smoke At Start Up And Extended Crank Time, Cold Start.
White Smoke Is A Symptom Of Poor Combustion . Poor Combustion Is Usually Caused By Air In The Fuel , Weak Compression (Leaking Cylinder) Or Coolant Leaking Into The Cylinder.
Objective: Find The Root Cause Of The White Smoke And Extended Cranking Time.
Testing : Will Be Using Cat Et And An Oscilloscope . Cat ET Scan Tool Will Be Used To Perform Cylinder Test And To Gather Other Information. We Will Be Using An Oscilloscope To Perform A Relative Compression Test, Coolant Pressure Test, Intake Pressure Test And Crankcase Pressure Test.
Tools: Cat ET Scan Tool, Picoscope 2205a, Delta P sensor And A Coolant Pressure Test Gauge .
We Are Trying To The Accuracy Of this Type Of Testing That We Perform Saving Our Customer and Ourselves Time and Money . We Are Not Only Proving The Coolant Problem But We Also Locate The Source Of The Problem.
The "Bubble Test" A Water Bottle With A Tube From The Coolant Tank Only Shows Us We Have A Leak Which We Already Know, It Does Not Tell Us Where Its Coming From. A Coolant Pressure Test With An Air Gauge Without Removing Anything Such As The Oil Pan Or Egr Cooler Again Is Telling Us What we Already Know That we Have A Leak Internally But It does Not Tell Us Where Its At .

Hello sir. Amazing video! Do you have a video about your picoscope?! Im highly interested in getting a setup like yours. The diagnostic capabilities are amazing

Thank you, comments like yours makes the work of putting together a video well worth the trouble. I hope to get better at it.

Thank you Ernest this is amazing stuff. I like how you can tell the rocker arm is loose by the pulse waveform. Priceless info you are putting out. I appreciate it and will use this information.

Ernest I have the same engine mine is a 02 and it is doing the same thing but doesn’t get hot unless I have a heavy load going uphill but thanks for making this video oh I don’t have any smoke though

Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch and reply. Yours sounds more like an airflow problem or coolant flow. You didn’t say if you were adding coolant or not, I will assume your not. I would be looking more at the fan clutch or dirty radiator. There’s a dozen things that it could be. I’ve had it where the impeller was bad on the pump not moving the coolant like it should. Or over fueling injector causing higher in cylinder temps. Keep it simple odds are it is. Flush the radiator not just the inside but the cooling fins of the condenser, charge air cooler and radiator. That may help.

@@zerotimetrucks2253 thank you for your reply yes I’m adding coolent because it’s coming from around the radiator cap I just changed the cap too. The oil cooler went out a couple hundred thousand miles ago and the machanic was supposed to changed the radiator then since my other one was so old and full of oil but you never know thanks again earnest that was my brother’s name my grandfather and great grandfather Wilmer earnest thanks again

I have a c15 acert and having issues with coolant coming out of recervoir tube by the cap, it only comes out when I have a heavy load I even put a jug to catch the coolant coming out to verify. I was told a bunch of things that it could be a head gasket or a bad air compressor or a bad thermostat? I took it to shop but they didn’t really do much to it besides tell me that there was pressure in the cooling system and that it was most likely gonna be my head gasket. Am I out of options? And just see if it’s the head gasket

Yes I understand, it could be one of several different possibilities. Performing a pressure test for the most part will only tell us what we already know and makes no sense to me. Like you I need to know what and where the cause is from there decide what would need to be done to repair. It and I would go about getting it done. In the video it was 4,5&6 I was pretty confident that it was a “sunken” liner or liners and it was but letting the customer know that ahead of time gave him a chance to prepare for it. Had it behaved differently I might of blamed it on a gasket or cracked head. Those things would still be checked of course . At least he now had an idea. Yes this test is really nice it could be something simple and quick that is what we want to know. If you like to stop by please give us a call so we can make time for you . Our office is 8303744422

Good morning my name is Melbourne I’m having that same issue right now my coolant is just pumping out through the reservoir drainage hose but the temperature is at 175 it’s not running hot or anything and I was told that the thermostat was stuck open. My question is what was the problem with your truck ?? I’m just lost right now and I’m dumping money into it and it’s not getting fixed

    • @Mosquito106

@@melbournemckie3439 my truck ended up blowing the head gasket on a hill so I ended up selling it to recoup some money back since I didn’t want to get the engine overhaul. All I can advise you is don’t run on places with hills or mountains because you’re truck most likely won’t be able to keep up cooling the engine and the same thing is going to happen to you

    • @zerotimetrucks2253

Good morning, sorry to hear that. On the truck I was working on the head gasket is blown or the liners sunk. Customer didn’t make the repairs so we never got to tear it down to pinpoint the issue. On ours after about 30-45min of idling the engine would over heat and pressure up the reservoir and spill over through the over flow tube. If your truck is not over heating then it’s a possibility the air compressor is contributing to the pressure build up. To test it you would have to disconnect the discharge line at the compressor (the line going to the air dryer) and supply air to the governor (res) port 120psi to unload the compressor. Start the engine and let it run to see if you’re still over pressurizing the reservoir if not the compressor is bad. If it is still pressuring the reservoir then it’s a possibility that the head, head gasket or liners are the problem. Hope that helps a little bit

every diesel I’ve ever had puffs smoke on start up…. That is not a symptom. The cylinder is cold because IT IS COLD

We have a 2003 Newmar motorhome with a Cat 3126E and it Never puffs smoke on start up. It does have an air intake heater that comes on for a few seconds when it's cold("wait to start").
