- The best dry fly fishing of my life...
Most people associate Alberta with Banff and Jasper, undeniably beautiful but unfortunately crowded. If you also seek out solitude and wild places, leave the crowds behind and keep heading north. Just know that search might drag you out of your comfort zone and put you face to face with real danger. Monsters in the woods are more than just fairy tales up here, but if you’re willing to accept these risks you might find yourself alone in some truly special places. This is a three day Grayling and Bull Trout adventure in the North Woods with some of the best fishing I’ve had in my entire life.

It's cool you gave this channel to your friend for an episode. Good to mix things up. I like his matter of fact, play by plays.
Glad you liked it!
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen
High praise, that's much appreciated!
Great job Sam, great video & narration!
Man, this video is just fantastic. From the shots, to the voiceovers to the music. Awesome job Sam. Stoked to be seeing more from FAS!
Thank you! More to come...
What an epic solo adventure. Sam you do a great job capturing your surroundings. Little unsettling witnessing all those bear tracks and a sad state of environmental issues. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks a lot!
loving the dorsal fins on those grayling 🤩
Great video. I was fishing the upper Red Deer a day or two before those folks were killed. I wasn’t that far away either. Scary stuff.
Excellent video, had to watch on my 65" tv instead of on my tablet. I was going for native Athabasca rainbows on my last trip into an area a bit north of here in which I scored a personal best. Got a nice bull in the main river system then big grayling after big grayling in a remote tributary. Love this area and keep on making films.
Would love to explore it more in the future!
Thanks for bringing a little beauty to us office drones. Ya'll are making me excited to get out this weekend!
Good luck out there!
Hats off to yet again another banger, love seeing more content from the FAS crew. Keep it up, yall rule.
Much appreciated!! There's a lot more to come
Excellent video. Great scenery. Nice fish. Strong but understated narration.
🎉❤😊 Sam is the man!!!
That's very nice of you!
Great video. Been a couple of years since I have been in that watershed, you have convinced me to make a trip this season.
Hope you have the same luck I did!
Awesome catches, beautiful country. That would be scary bear knocking on your door, of course you say window 🪟
Introspective, tenacious, and humble, thank you Sam, great video!
Happy you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
So nicely filmed. And those bulls were beautiful!
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful trip, thanks for taking the time to post !
Thank you for watching!
Day 2 I know that spot. Either direction is good normally, problem was time of year. By the end of September all the fish in as much as 20 kms of river will be in a few select deep wintering holes already, that is the reason you had to travel distance to find them. July-Aug you will find them still spread out thru the system. Some of the best fishing is right at that bridge although it gets alot of pressure. I like the downstream option there. I've floated it a few times. I can tell you that system doesn't have the numbers it used to, oilfield activity, logging etc have taken it's toll.
I lived for many years in northern Alberta and BC and it is for sure an undiscovered gem for the flyfisherman. Don't worry about the logging and oil activity ruining the fishing though. That acitivity has been going on in the north for about 50 years now and the fishing is as good as it ever was. The biggest problem in that area is that most people fishing there keep everything they catch, and with how hard the winters are, those rivers just can't take the pressure if people don't catch and release
Thanks for sharing!
Great vid Sam, really enjoyed it!
Glad to hear that, thank you!
loved the way you filmed htis and explained everything it was really coll
Great video!!!!! Surprised you both took solo trips, sometimes it's nice to get sometime alone, this video was the better of the two forsure
Awesome trip!
Always producing a banger vid!🤘🏼
Thank you!
Commend you for sharing a great journey, well done, awesome video (and work)!
Thank you so much!
Great video!
I loved watching this adventure. Well filmed, well narrates and well edited. Grayling are on my bucket list, but until then, this video allowed me to live vicariously through you. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Grayling were on my bucket list for a long time too
Dig the style Hippie Sam. Both the fishing and filming. What an adventure!
Cool! I feel like if all you see is natty gas plants and logging you probably are in the wildest place
Nope!! No alone in any environment like these last 2. You are one brave sob. Great videos though..
Bravo! 🎉🎉🎉
Well done!
Great video translates really well, I just wish I could get out more! Good job!
Glad you enjoyed thank you!
Great video. One of the best I’ve ever watched. I’ve watched a lot. Good job.
Btw that was a grizzly at your car.
Amazing video, new subscriber. Ya that GC to GP area definitely has alotta bears!
Thank you! A lot of bears for sure
I need to take you to some very special places on the Gunnison brother for real
Great filming and dialogue!!! Do the leggings you guys use work for cold water?? And what brand? Thanks!!!
It's wicked seeing my home from another anglers eyes (I grew up fishing all these spots with my friends). I've been in BC for the past four years and can't wait to get back home this June! Great job with the film! If you have plans to come north of the boarder again soon i'd love to spend a few days filming and fishing with y'all. (recommend heading to Haida Gwaii or interior BC if you want something really wild and remote)
Thanks a lot! Very lucky to call those your home waters
Great video only one thing I would suggest is let the walking away and walking to shots go. Would love to see what your seeing which would have add more time fishing. Oh well I guess if I don’t like it I can make my own. Great trip though. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It’s always been a thing on my mind when fishing. Often times these rivers and streams that are great for trout are pretty remote. I myself don’t have to worry about grizz, but I would say never underestimate black bears for those in the Appalachian mtns.
For sure, black bears are no joke either
Pretty sure I’ve fished the same area a few times. Lots of bears up there
what whaight rod were you useing im starting to get into it
i have to know what that green and white rod is what brand i mean?
Can I ask where this was please, not exactly but abouts? I live in BC, lived in AB before so..... Amazing fishing and video though...... :-)
Send me a message on instagram if you have one and we can chat!
Look at the chompers on that bull! 0:32:20
Big chompers no doubt
This is why S&W made the model 29 in a 3 inch barrel
Don't think you can carry one in Canada though.
@hhblair44 then the only option is to pepper spray. Safely remove kayak first. For more watch bear attacks girl's kayak.
Closest encounter I have had with a bear was finding tracks so fresh they had just started to fill with water. To add to it I’d left my bear spray at camp. 🍀🐻
Spooky! I've definitely backtracked a few miles after forgetting my bear spray...gotta have it out there.
Most people associate Alberta with oil
I've never encountered a bear or wolf in the wild before. The video is great & looks like a fun adventure. Thank you for sharing. Also, I have a couple of questions for you, but didn't see a way to contact you on your website. Do you have an email I can contact you with?
Do you have an Instagram? That would be the easiest way to contact us!
@FLYALLSZN I don't. All I have is RUclips, Twitter/X, and email. The question I'd like to ask is on behalf of the fly fishing organization I'm a member of. Would you be interested in being a guest speaker at one of our meetings. I replied to your comment two months ago, three weeks ago, & today. Again, if there's some way I can contact you & provide more information, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.
Hard to keep your flies dry/floating..kind of day
The best kind of day
Suggestion - try to film the part where a bear is trying to join you in the car - people might be interested in that
Easier said than done!
Can’t leave food or stoves etc out at night
Leaving the stove out was a mistake, the hunter camp next to me also left a deer strung up...
There’s 30” ers in that river.
I believe it!
Work the areas you are fishing in this! Some amazing spots out there
I’m honestly shocked I haven’t seen my truck in the background of your vid we fish the same spots out there 😅
Maybe someday you will!
