  • Hollywood is becoming increasingly woke and they’re isolating and disparaging large portions of their audience while doing it. Instead of making endearing entertainment that appeals to all people, lesser-quality, hyper-radical content passes through without a flinch. For those fed up with Hollywood’s woke endgame, what can be done? We answer that question on this episode of Out of Frame.

    When "art" becomes less important than politics, then it is no longer art, but PROPAGANDA.

    • @crimsonmask3819
      @crimsonmask3819 11 месяцев назад +1

      The modern concept of _art_ is a bit of a con; we should appreciate skilled artisans/craftsmen more and not be stumbling over the urge to judge things based on competence and quality just because it's labeled art. But, by the same token, when a craft is designed to communicate ideas, as is fiction in all its myriad forms, propaganda is no less valid an application than commerce, and arguably more true to the intent.
      As well, that doesn't mean it has to be poorly made or ham-fisted. One of the most effective works of concerted propaganda I can think of is the movie *Full Metal Jacket.* Not only was it also an exceptional example of the craft of filmmaking on all fronts, it was a grand innovation in propaganda, actually using military training psychology on the audience to soften them for straight cinema-verite delivery of programming.

    im in the industry and literally lost almost every "friend" on FB because I DIDN'T post ANYTHING political. I was called out with the ol "your silence is complicity" .. or whatever slogan was happening at the time.. I was exiled for just saying "hi" to everyone once in a while. And fine with their messaging, if it is applied within story boundaries and expectations. If everyone in every show suddenly were missing limbs I would question my suspension of disbelief. there simply isn't 80 percent of our population who is missing limbs. it would be like a boom mic suddenly entering frame. When I started seeing Hollywood actors being called "brave" for standing on stage and saying "F you Trump!" I was like "but this is just what theyre all doing, how is this brave?" Of course my notion of bravery is running into a burning house to save someone. Im saddened to see just how infected all facets of the industry is. Ive had to sit in dailies and listen to diatribes about how much like nazis Trump voters are. Im trying to glean some info about a lighting pass on my shot, I dont want to waste time listening to political rants. Of course if I said that out loud I would be called a nazi. go figure. now my silence HAS become necessary to simply work. People have just lost their frame of reference and its frightening to see just how well the far left has cornered Academia, Hollywood and the media. its the trifecta that created a zombie factory. When I grew up I wanted to work in movies because you could literally tell any story you wanted. only to see them all telling the exact same story over and over again, then be threatened for desiring something fresh.

It was the left that went so far left they fell off the edge of sanity. Was it really you who changed your mind about anything at all? • @anwylhsm954
      @anwylhsm954 Год назад

      That really sucks. I lost about 40 friends in my very small circle of acquaintances on social media. But I didn't stay silent. When I saw what was going on I started "talking about politics" for the first time in my life, but it isn't even about "politics" it's about right and wrong - even "good and evil" in some cases.
      I had Trump Derangement Syndrome like a lot of people did. I just believed what the media said about him because it was "the news", right? Until the Catholic school kid incident when I realized the media blatantly reversed the whole story and the kid not only was innocent, but he was actually acting admirably, and it was all because he had on a Trump hat that the media smeared him and caused his family to receive death threats. At that point I realized everything I believed about Trump came to me from that same media, which now I realized couldn't be trusted, so I looked into each and every claim that was made about him that made me think he was the lowest form of life on the planet. And I discovered that ALL of them - except maybe the "grab 'em by the you know what" comment - were bullshit. The "Trump is racist" narrative especially is nonsense, yet Biden REALLY IS, and demonstrably so. Trump allowed black people and Jews to join his club while all the other clubs still wouldn't, AND he sued Palm Beach for racism. He also outed Epstein as a pedophile many years ago. I'm not saying I "like" him, I'm pretty ambivalent at this point, but what I AM saying is that it isn't hard to find the truth - that is, if you WANT to find it. It just baffles me why people want to continue on in this outraged fog of unbridled hate over nothing. How are there still people that haven't figured this all out by now? Trump isn't our enemy. Klaush Schwab, Bill Gates, George Soros, all of those super rich assholes are the enemy and it's their buddies who own ALL of our media and push that narrative that is so aggressively anti-Trump.... Because Trump couldn't be bought and was actively working against those people and fucking up their "Agenda 2030". It's incredibly transparent at this point.
      But I do know that, in the industry (I live 10 min. from Pinewood Studios and I have quite a lot of friends and family who work there) they are often approached and coerced into putting out a particular ideological message. Some of these Hollyweirdos don't actually think these things at all, they are essentially owned by the industry they work for. The music industry especially is this way. I don't think it helps that those who go against the Almighty Narrative end up coincidentally having a string of really bad luck, or end up in jail, or dying suddenly by drowning in a bathtub or hanging from a door knob.

Those last five words hit me like a sack of bricks every time, because it tells me you never cared about my patronage, what's more you think I'm so destructive to the thing that I genuinely enjoyed for years that you'd rather see me gone than listen to a single opinion I might have on the subject I've poured time and energy into learning and partaking in. @@jcboyle82 An example - not from movies, I don't know the film industry well enough to point it out - but from comics, to show you how information can easily be cooked and how a person can lie while saying nothing but factual truth:
      The primary means of measuring comic sales is in how many copies of a particular issue are ordered by physical stores. It makes sense to do it this way because it doesn't worry about the mire of needing feedback from every store of what they're selling - you just have to look if they're ordering extra copies of an issue, which means they've sold out and there is demand over the store's supply. So if every comic store is ordering a buttload of X-Men, you know X-Men is selling well. You don't need to know exactly how many of these newly-ordered copies were sold at the store, just that the store believed they needed these many copies.
      With me so far?
      In the modern day, the big two - Marvel doing this worse than DC at least from the last time I looked into this - have taken up a new methodology: in order for the stores to buy the comics they want, the comics that are selling, they need to order additional comics. For example, if a store wants to sell X-Men, they may have to buy one copy of Captain Marvel for every copy of X-Men...or Marvel won't let them buy the X-Men comics. And for a comic store, of course they have to sell the popular comics to make money. And sometimes the stores will have to buy two or three copies of a comic nobody wants just to get one of the comics that sells.
      So now Marvel can proudly state that based on the sales data Captain Marvel is outselling X-Men by a factor of 2 or 3, when if you were to go to the physical stores you'd see X-Men almost entirely sold out while extra copies of unsold Captain Marvel are stacked in crates in the back.
      To bring it back around to movies, one thing I know that was being done for the Captain Marvel movie was that Disney was actually buying up tickets to screenings just to inflate the numbers of people who were supposedly going to see it. This ended up losing theaters money because while the tickets were bought, people who don't exist don't buy snacks, and that's where theaters make a lot of their revenue.

    Thank God that technology has driven down the costs of production and enabled creators to bypass the "Hollywood system" to make and distribute their work.
    Thirty, maybe even twenty years ago, the only way to create a high-quality movie -- and distribute it to the masses -- was by going through the studio system. Everything was so freaking expensive, and concentrated in California (for the US film industry). Now, you can create a whole movie (that looks like a big studio movie) for what most of those big studio productions spend on catering.

  • @SilyaBeeodess
    @SilyaBeeodess 2 года назад

    I'd agree that viewing art from a business lens plays a big role in how individuals handle these relationships between artists and fans. However, I'd like to extend that to a conversation of a business mindset vs. a root of entitlement and how it plays a role in both sides of that relationship. The video does an awesome job at covering how entitled many creators today can be by demanding that others support their work/beliefs and insulting them when they don't. Getting to create art for a living is a blessing... when you actually can make a living from it. The phrase "the starving artist" is well-known and, living in an age with more access to art and literature than anyone could ever hope to see in their lifetimes, it can be taken for granted. Because of that, there are a lot of people who don't want to pay for it and expect free work, or even demand that people who may only treat their art as a hobby change their work and/or constantly produce more. Some individuals feel entitled to an artist's time and efforts. I'd argue that this latter case doesn't really happen in Hollywood though so much as online among independent creators.
    Hollywood is a really closed circle. For example, in the animation industry, it's no secret that a huge chunk of mainstream showrunners all come from pretty much the same education, work on the same cartoons together, and filter more people with that same background into the same big networks. They can lean on names and franchises that are already well-known by the public, enjoying the fruits of a tree they didn't plant. Most independent artists don't have those resources and the competitive market for them is much larger without getting anywhere near the same amount of attention as Hollywood does. As a result, many will create fanart or give out free work because at least then they might get some traffic their way, which can unintentionally draw in an audience that expects free content going forward.
    Just because a chef loves to cook doesn't make someone entitled to their food. Just because an auto mechanic loves to work on cars doesn't mean a person doesn't have to pay them after they've fixed theirs. For artists, there's nothing worse than someone downplaying their work because "it's what they love doing anyway." I've had personal experience with this from selling art at events: One day, a young man came to me and said to my face that maybe he should go into art since "it was so easy" and "all I had to do was draw a picture once and print it for sale." Yes, with prints, the art may only need to be done once so long as the original file/piece is maintained in order to make future copies. However, this fails to take into account everything that follows: The cost of printing, the cost of booths at events, the hours that go into planning and then attending said events like any other retailer just hoping you can at least break even, the extra hours packing your materials to and from said events, the cost of a hotel if you're attending an event too far from home, managing an online store, handling all of the shipments, etc., etc., etc... And when I tried to politely explain this to him, he didn't listen.
    Such cases are incredibly discouraging, and it doesn't make artists want to create anything for their fans because they don't feel like they have any support to begin with. This is why it's important to show the creators you love that you enjoy their work and respect the time they put into it when possible. Sometimes, it doesn't even have to be through money: It can be as easy as sharing their art so that it gets a little more attention or leaving a comment so that they know someone enjoys it. If people in general can accept art as not just a hobby, but also a product of someone's labor, it could encourage a greater level of respect in the field as a whole.
    Going back to the creators' behavior to wrap this up, I'll use the examples I mentioned before: Just as a chef can't demand that people eat their food and an auto mechanic can't demand that people come to their shop, an artist can't demand that people follow their work. They don't always need to change their art solely to please their audience, but they should still keep their audience in-mind. (At least in the case of original creators, there is an argument to be said that fans followed the work to begin with for that individual's take on their creation. However, this could likely get into a whole other conversation of the line between having confidence in one's work and being full of oneself.) If you buy something for its quality, you expect your next purchase of that thing to be of a similar if not the same quality. This applies to all products, including art, so creators must always strive to do their best work and maintain positive relationships with those that do support it.

    I think people forget too often that sometimes, you don't NEED to relate to everything you watch.... it's great watching a movie about a Jewish person from WW2, or an American on the Oregon Trail in the 1800s, or a rich CEO that lives in Dubai, even though I may have nothing in common with those main characters. The best part of films (and writing) is that we can use that media to put ourselves in THEIR shoes and sympathize with their life experiences and challenges. Great video, thanks for putting it out here :)

    I remember doing a small job for a Hollywood production that sadly went the way of most productions. I was at a house of one of the guys deeply involved in the production. He is a Hollywood professional been around that town for decades. At the time he was going on about how piracy was the problem. This was well over a decade ago, I figured that was the thinking of studio leadership at the time. But over the years I've been hearing news reports, about how the number of moviegoers have been dropping. These reports go back to the 1990's. Some years have noted drops of about 25%, but these reports were in the new media. Not in mainstream news. Then I was hearing stories about production companies having a hard time finding funding. Along the way studios changing ownership, of course Disney buying Fox, etc. Those things are not a sign of a healthy industry. When I saw the industry pushing hard left and insulting the audience, I've seen this before.
    Around the turn of the century newspapers were having similar issues. Readership was going down. Newspapers shutting down, others being sold. But on the editorial pages, the editors were insulting the audience. Putting down their readers for not buying their papers. Stories were pushing hard left, pushing out more of an agenda(than they used too). Newspapers are still around, but only a fraction of what they once were. I think Hollywood is headed for the same place.

      I think you are misreading the problem. The issue isn’t that Hollywood suddenly decided to go “hard left”, popular culture became more “left”, and Hollywood, being an industry in capitalism, followed suit. Being PC sells.

      @ktoth29 2 года назад

      Your remark about "piracy" I think is typical of the type of non-issue that Hollywood rank and file used to be concerned with. A lot of union members just parrot whatever the Unions tell them... not unlike other heavily unionized industries. They get told what to think. I think that mentality has transferred from an alternate economic reality to an alternate social reality.

    I can’t even describe how much I appreciate this video. As an artist in both music and visual arts I have felt this for years. It’s increasing hard to find work where I’m not offended by the direction and ideologies I have to support and promote to earn a paycheck. My longest job was working for a Classic Movie company that restored movies predating the 80s and as far back as the 40’s and fifties. I found myself longing for new content that mirrored the film making of the past. Not to be lectured but to be entertained. Now when I consume new media I’m always on the lookout for the ideological bent and waiting to be disappointed.

      I mean it's not just Nordic mythology they disrespect they disrespect all pagan mythology. Just look how often pagans and witches along with our various gods and goddesses are demonised and villianised in media. Ultimately imo you can't even blame Hollywood for this go straight to the source of where this disrespect towards the old gods came from aka Christianity.
      Like it or not it's the Christians that started this bs but most won't dare criticise them over it.
      If you want a perfect example of this just look at how people freaked out over one of the X-Men comics implying Jesus might be a mutant then compare it to what happens when one of the various old pagan religions gods or goddesses is portrayed as a demon or their followers as evil and satanic.

    I remember studying Shakespeare back in school. At first, his stuff was kind of a drag, even by high school English class standards. It was just really hard to generate interest in them: we read the plays rather than saw them, the different format for the language of his day made events hard to follow, and the choice of plays tended toward the most mundane of his works. Nothing against the standard-issue Romeo and Juliet, of course, but when we could have had practically slapstick screwball comedies like A Midsummer Night's Dream, or spooky magic and blood-soaked conspiracies like The Tempest and Macbeth... C'mon, teachers, know your audience.
    Shakespeare certainly did, and that's the reason this video brought him to mind. I gained a lot of respect for The Bard when I learned he wasn't writing to create ~art~ - no, he wrote because that was his fucking JOB, and if his verses didn't get butts in seats, then he didn't GET PAID. Learning that really put things in perspective, and honestly made his work a lot more approachable: it's much easier to take in if it's not locked away on a pedestal, reserved for the smart people to admire.
