  • Every year, an estimated 400 families are devastated by the sudden death of a toddler or young child. Now, an NYU study published in the medical journal Neurology on sudden unexplained death in children found evidence of febrile seizures in some of the cases. NBC News’ Kate Snow spoke with a family impacted, and has more details on the findings of the study.

We dealt with this. My son was born in 2017. From his first month he breathed through his mouth, and drooled excessively. He snored as well, and eventually was diagnosed w/ sleep apnea. His nose & mouth leaked so much, we went through 35-42 bibs a day. He got sick almost every month.
When he was 12 mos -16 mos old he had at least 1 "febrile seizure" every month. But he was always conscious. He would cry, "no, no, no" right before each episode. And of course cried during them. I was able to take a short video in only one circumstance. 5, different doctors watched it. No one could say for certain it was a febrile seizure. 2 different EKG studies could not prove a real seizure. Because they weren't conducted close enough to one of his seizures. How was I supposed to plan that!? I was offered epilepsy medicine for him. Despite not having 'real proof,' of what kind of seizure he was having.
All that to say. At 16 months of age, he was approved for ear tubes put in, adenoids & tonsils out because of his sleep apnea, open mouth breathing his whole life, constant sickness, & excessive drooling. The hope was, that clearing out his sinuses/throat etc. would mean his temperature wouldn't spike so fast when he got sick, because he would drain efficiently. His MD said that's when kids (who get febrile seizures) get seizures; when their temp would spike rapidly.
After the surgery, the surgeon said his adenoids were the biggest she had ever seen on a child his age.
Sure enough, thank God, my son's health issues cleared up after surgery. He never had a seizure again. His temperature didn't spike when he got sick, and eventually, a year later, stopped mouth breathing.
All that to share...we were never told Febrile Seizures have a 4% chance of causing death. The seizures were downplayed for sure. We were never told about monitoring devices. And the first 2 docs who said, "they are harmless, and kids grow out of them." Told us to wait, and he'll grow out of them.
After watching this video I am so glad we pursued his surgery. We didn't have to wait & see! We had found the root of his spiking fevers.
**I hope our experience can help someone.**
God bless you parents who are dealing with this.

@@nikkibest5010 I appreciate it. I was told by so many doctors, because only select few people in our family know this happened, to stop crying over it when others have it much worse. I completely understand that and I acknowledge everyone who has a broken heart, especially losing a child that you once got to hold, kiss, play with, feed and nurture. It truly breaks my heart in so many ways, however I always tell people to never allow others to be dismissive of your feelings. I’ve suffered from major depression both related and unrelated to postpartum, and that’s something I learned along the way is to surround myself by people who are there for me and what I’ve endured and not to compare my story to others. Again, this story made my whole heart shatter to pieces. It's amazing that sudden infant death continues to baffle us, and I'm glad that the research is making some headway. Over 60 years ago, more than a decade before I was born, my dad and his first wife lost their 1-year-old son to SIDS. Even today, my dad will get choked up speaking about it. They both never got over it, which contributed to the end of their relationship. I hope for continued healing to this family and others, although I know the pain never really goes away.

This isn’t SIDS. These cases have associated comorbidities, which *cannot* exist in conjunction with a SIDS diagnosis. SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning there is nothing else on which to place blame for the death. In these cases, the seizures appear to be the cause.

Our daughter was starting to when she was roughly 18 months, during the whole covid thing. It was weekend too, friday evening, so no GP available.
So I tentatively called 'emergency GP' that sits between the regular GP and the ER. Now I know those guys as the 'turnaway team' because I've had them reject me with broken bones, seen them reject poisonings with a 48 hour max survival rate as 'not urgent enough'.
Because our daughter, she was running a fever of 40.1, small shakes occasionally and I could hear her breathe but you know, kids do that. I thought it was covid.
The triagist on the phone basically went "Do you have a car ready to go, otherwise I'm sending an ambulance. You do have? Good. Here. Now. Don't F around. Break the speed limits, see you in 10 minutes."
We got rushed past an entire waiting area stuffed full of entitled boomers who stubbed their toe on something who clog the system up and cause the 'turnaway team' effect.
Turned out to be a regular nasty cold and nothing serious (just upper airways), but I apreciate them erring on the side of caution.
That said, you never know how it goes. 😆She recently caught covid, her 2nd time and she barely noticed it.
I got it too, 2nd time. My first time was a bad 3 days, but this time it laid me out for 3 weeks. Couldn't work. Couldn't even think. Coughing blood like I'd been snorting mustard gas or something. That was late november and still I can't run more than 100 meters without gasping, absolutely devastating. Meaning that by now our little one can outrun me.😆

Omg. My first child had this as well!! Literally whenever she was laying, even at an incline, she would spit up, choke, and not be able to move air(had a lot of GI issues even though she was breastfed). I was so sleep deprived and scared, battling PPD with OCD. I literally could not lay her down. I bought expensive devices that would keep her upright for the first 4 months of her life and held her for sleeping. The doctors would not listen to my concerns and pleas for help. 😢😢 As soon as she gained upper body strength, I let her sleep on her tummy and that helped ALOT.

I would not be putting Bluetooth anything on or near an infant. Instead make sure that the mattress your child is sleeping on is not sprayed with chemical flame retardants, volatile organic compounds , and plasticizers, like phthalates and BPA as well as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a large class of synthetic chemicals otherwise known as “forever chemicals”. Sadly, most run of the mill crib mattresses do in fact contain a lot of these.

@@mama_knitterPlease explain why you wouldn’t use Bluetooth on or near an infant. Is there danger that isn’t well known? If so, parents who are using them unnecessarily with infants and toddlers need to be told. It is potentially worth the risk for a child with a chance of death after a condition like febrile seizures has been determined. But to loose another seemingly healthy child is unthinkable if Bluetooth devices could be responsible. Do you have a link you can share?

    • @mama_knitter

@@merk9569 a constant low powered RF Radiation signal is more dangerous than a more powerful short duration RF Radiation signal. Bluetooth emits RF Radiation constantly as long as it is on, and it is a slightly higher frequency than 4G cell service. (5G is a much higher frequency than Bluetooth.) Its going to be the cigarette of our generation. Brain tumors and cancer in children are already accelerating at a speed we've never seen before. However, due to the convenience, people will brush this off. Its definitely something to look into and be aware of.

I have lived with epilepsy for 38 years, since I was 11 years old. I know you worry, and I want to reassure you of something that most people dwell on. When we have seizures, we are not there. We feel no pain, and we have no idea how bad it looks for you, our loved ones. It’s often worse for you than for us, because you have to watch it.
Don’t let anyone tell you that your child will be less than, especially when it comes to intelligence. I was told I was stupid for years. I’m not. My IQ is 128.
I do have some memory problems. Mainly short term memory, ie names, numbers, and other little things. I have had many concussions, and I think it has affected my memory.
Keep an eye on your child’s teeth. Many medications for epilepsy can dry the mouth out, and it causes teeth to rot.
Making sure that your child doesn’t see themselves as an epileptic is important. They live with epilepsy, they are not epilepsy. I never had a seizure without wearing makeup lol. I have seen too many people who live with epilepsy, let go of themselves and embrace the disability as who they are. It’s self destructive, it’s counterproductive to living a full life.
I hope you don’t feel I’ve condescended to you, as that’s the last thing I want you to feel. I just want to offer you a perspective, from someone who knows the struggle, and the strength, it takes to live with epilepsy. You live with it too, remember that. Sending you blessings, and light. 🌹

As a mother of a child with seizure disorder, I have to ask how does monitoring oxygen levels help? When a child is in seizure, we may warch, clock how long it is, but we can't make it go away. Sudep, sudden unexplained death in epilepsy, rare, but real, is not something we have control over, except trying to pre ent seizures with medication. But uncontrolled seizures for those on medications is still correlated with SUDEP

Especially after 10 years they should have data to back it up, a younger company could make more sense. If anything, there are a lot of babies who had pneumonia and were brought to the ER too late because the readings were wrong and telling parents they were ok when they were not. The first one he was asleep on his tummy (he had rolled over on his own) and his face was straight down on the bed!! So that was very real. We had a second incident recently where he was on his back and breathing really weird when we came in. He had a very stuffy nose at the time. But yeah his oxygen had dropped into the 70’s. I've never heard that as a reason. Nor was I doing it to seperate from him. I stared at the monitor all the time for his chest moving etc. I'm sahm so I didn't need to go anywhere. He just woke very easily and would cry and cry and he did so well when it was suggested to try laying him in his crib. Sleep health is a very important issue too that needs to be weighed with other issues like parent bonding and needs. Some kids need their own space to sleep well.

Tentatively called the weekend service (who I know to reject even poisoned people if their prognosis doesn't involve dying in the next 24 hours) and explained the information told me to call if I heard our baby breathing and it was probably nothing serious, but....
The triagist interupted me and basically went "Do you have a car? Here. Now. Don't F around. Break the speed limits, see you in 10 minutes." and we got rushed past an entire waiting area full of entitled boomers who ussually clog the system and ensure each emergency visit is normally a minimum 2+ hour wait.

I have to wonder how much of this could be prevented if parents kept their babies sleeping in the same room as them. Especially when the baby is having a seizure, if the mom is sleeping right next to the baby when its happening, mom might wake up and be able to save the babies life. As a mother myself I hear everything my baby does at night as she is next to me. I wish America did not endorse a culture of babies sleeping in their own rooms. It's totally abnormal (and goes against every biological marker) for a baby to be alone ever, and it went against every instinct and bone in my body when I had my babies. My toddler and I both have seizures. Both diagnosed around 14 months old. My first seizure was febrile but hers started out of nowhere one day when she was taking a nap. I was watching the monitor so thankfully I was able to rush in there. But I totally believe that these infants easily could’ve had seizures in their sleep. SUDEP is more common than we think and we need to spread awareness about epilepsy/seizures in infants/toddlers. I’m glad these studies are finding something!!

My son had one febrile seizure once a year. As he grew older it got worst. When he was 5 years old his last seizure was so long that we and the doctors were so concerned about him. We took him to the specialist but they couldn’t find anything wrong. I was so scared that I even went to a psychic for help. She told me that it will stop so I don’t have to worry about it. It finally stopped when he was almost 6. It is scary because my didn’t wake up after his seizure. We continue to check his breathing. I used the owlet smart sock with my daughter. She had just woken up from a nap and was crying like usual. Then all of the sudden she got completely silent and the alarm started going off. I knew to be worried because this wasn’t your typical false alarm from the sock being kicked off. The fact that she was also completely silent just ignited this fear inside of me and I went running into her bedroom. She was completely unresponsive, her eyes were open but unmoving, I couldn’t tell if she was even breathing. I unwrapped her from her snoo swaddle and lay her flat on the floor. She was unresponsive for what felt like forever but could have only been a matter of seconds. Before I could even respond to what was happening she started blinking and looking around smiling. The entire situation was still extremely alarming and I’ll never know what happened. There is no way to know if what I did solved the problem or if it would have resolved on its own. All I know is that for some reason her oxygen levels were showing as low and she didn’t appear to be breathing. I also have a friend who used the owlet smart sock with their infant. In the middle of the night the alarm went off and sure enough something was very wrong. They rushed him to the emergency room and spent several weeks there. Whatever he was sick with I can’t remember now was really bad and the doctors said had they not gotten there sooner he would have died. Like the kid went to bed fine and then when they went in there he had a raging fever and was not responding to them. I really do think that anyone who can afford one should have one especially if your infant has some sort of medical condition already. I wish everyone could afford to have one because there are several stories from people who have had some weird situations like mine and then some more very serious ones like my friends. A lot of people called me extra when I got one but I don’t care. I’d rather be safe then look back later and think about what more I could have done. What happened to this family is terrible. It shouldn’t happen to any family and if something like the smart sock could help prevent it from happening to anyone else then it’s worth it. It doesn’t replace being vigilant of course but in this situation where everyone is exhausted and asleep how can you be? Parents don’t have eyes in the backs of our heads as much as we wish we did. They had no reason to suspect that anything might go wrong that night. Even if you have a perfectly healthy baby I still urge parents to consider getting one.

All their children have uncombable hair syndrome when they are young. They have one incident on video and he almost died. I think people are thinking they are saying that this is the cause for all infants when it's not. There is obviously going to be other causes but they are saying this may be the cause for the majority of the unexplained... where they followed all of the rules and it still happened.

I can’t stress enough to tell parents don’t have baby’s in their own room the first year, I understand you are sleep deprived but I had infants that were choking on their spit or vomit due to colic so I had them beside my bed waking up every 40 minutes to ensure their safety. Every time I see or hear about an infant dying is because they were in their own room or a baby sitter didn’t check on them and left them in a spot for too long. It’s tiring working but you must sacrifice your sleep to make sure the baby is breathing. Also breastfeeding your kids a lot who just go to bottle the baby’s tend to get seizures. Baby’s weren’t meant to be in their own rooms away from parents.

As it appears to rarely have fatal outcomes, it's not so likely. It starts out from the whole problem of how to research it in first place. Even getting to test procedures/medications on children (at the appropriate stage of testing) is really sth. that - with rare diseases - may pose more risks than benefits.

He was so shy, and I remember the weekend prior to his passing, he gave me a kiss. His daddy was holding him and when he saw me, he leaned in and wrapped his little arms around me and gave me a kiss on my cheek. He was such a happy boy. He would have been 17yo now.
