The civil rights flag of the late 60s was used to mark safe meeting places for all. The mostly white DOJ and the local police would raid places they believed to be dens of immorality. The many groups targeted by the proletariat would post a simple multi-colored flag in the window or door of the meeting place. Sometimes adding a specific color stripe at the bottom indicating who was meeting. And yes even Stonewall had the civil rights flag posted at the time of the riots. During marches the basic civil rights flag was continued to be used even though many of the younger attendees didn't understand its significance. It was used significantly by the gay movement to represent total inclusivity until Harvey Milk was assassinated. When alive Harvey worked tirelessly to unite the different groups under on symbol/purpose. When he was assassinated the organizers of the parade that year wanted to honor his efforts while at the same time unify everyone's struggle that attended the parade. That first parade they flew the civil rights flag with an added lavender stripe at the bottom for the first time ever. The stripes being different colors represented everyone and nobody in particular. I have to admit that it was longer ago than most of your parents have been alive, but from what I can remember there weren't that many stripes either. It was like five original stripes and our lavender (gay stripe) made six. Thank you for the informative video. Keep up the good fight. It never ends.

The rainbow flag does cover everyone in the community! Sometimes people use "gay" to mean "anyone who's not straight" kind of like "queer." The reason we have different flags now is that some people feel it's important to highlight certain parts of the community who need more help and attention, specifically trans people and people of color, but everyone is still represented by the original rainbow flag!
