  • I met Professor at Dignity Village in Portland, Oregon. Even with three engineering degrees he still ended up homeless.
Professor told me he felt safer sleeping in the woods than he did in homeless shelters. Just another reason for homeless services to look at Dignity Village as a model for healing and support.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I found myself homeless when I lost my job, had health issues and a divorce all in a short amount of time. To make matters worse my financial investment went belly up at the same time as these stressors were happening. I lost all my savings. I agree that circumstances can result in anyone becoming homeless. I eventually did recover but the experience will always remind me that all humans are not immune from vulnerability.

I am sometimes afraid to lose mt job for health reason. ..it happened to me once, lost all my savings, and took me 5 years to getback 8n my feet with 6000 left in my bank account. .but, what happened, I met people who guided me toward a new job and I had found treatment for my medical condition sfter seaching for a solution and knocking on many doors..everything happened around the same time....so I received my awakening, and believed a miracle can happen when you hit rock bottom.

When I got divorced, I lost the family home, all my belongings in the home, but most of all my son.. The day I left I stopped overnight at my cousins and the next day bought myself a caravan, pitched it up at my dad's, and a week later was able to carry on seeing my son... He was 5 when this happened... He is now 13,and my life is back on track, but so very nearly wasn't.. Circumstances that's all takes.

KGB KGB yet many of these countries economys are growing drastically. Especially China and India, here in the U.S. we have people dying every day because they can't afford overpriced medicine that's much less expensive in places like Canada and Mexico, especially insulin. Guys like you make it sound like it's a choice between complete socialism or complete capitalism. When the best countries to live in have a mix of the two, like Sweden, Scandinavia, and Norway. No one dies because they can't afford overpriced medicine, or even to see a doctor. And they're generally happier, healthier, and better off than most people in more capitalist centered countries like the U.S..

    • @dylanhaugen3739
      @dylanhaugen3739 4 года назад

KGB KGB you know why rich people from Canada come to the U.S. for medical care? Because they can just buy there way to the front of the line. In places like Canada care is distributed by actual need, the sickest people get care first, why here in america if your poor you may never get care because if you can pay you don't get care. That's why thousands die in America from a lack of basic medical care, people die every day because they can't afford the over priced medicine they need to stay alive. The rich come here because here it's the size of your wallet that counts not how sick you are. British citizens actually fly home when they have work here because it's cheaper to take a flight home to get care than get care here. There's a reason why every modern western democracy has a form of single payer healthcare, America's the outlier, we have the most expensive healthcare system on earth and one of the least efficient in the western world. Also care to give some actual sources for your claims on the refugee situation? Because from what I've seen a lot of refugee children are being abused in masse, probably because they're easy targets.

I feel this. I hated going to the shelters. There was some dudes in these shelters that acted like they were demon possessed. Some may not understand, some may call it mental illness.
I was homeless with my best friend and we chose to sleep outside on the city streets in a well hidden area. In Seattle, it was so much better because they had a 18-26 youth shelter and everyone was nice and wonderful souls. I liked that shelter because they cared for the young homeless. Other shelters were a nightmare. I'm happy now because I'm not on the street. I just hope one day no one will be homeless. It is the worst. Can really make you selfless and care about others. It'll either harden your heart, or soften it.

Now I work at a low-paying menial job and just live day to day, hoping that I don't get sick or disabled. My retirement plan is a .45 cal full metal jacket round from my Colt semi-auto pistol. People who end up homeless due to a divorce. There are a lot of those. Ok, man, i get, you two don't love each other and decide to go separate ways, but how can you let the person that you shared your house and life with, live on the street and not give a single fuck about them anymore? It's the person you were the most intimate with and shared so many things, and now you just throw them in the trash.

Because I was too nice and trusted the gold-digging dirtbag that we would agree on everything and not give the attorneys all of (mostly) MY hard earned money. It was after the divorce when I found out just how bad I'd been basically robbed (investment accounts and savings drained and loans taken out in my name). Now I don't have the funds to hire an attorney because I became Disabled a few years ago. That's when the marriage went downhill...because the six-figure income was gone and he was spoiled. Anyway, I've said too much. But all women aren't evil, just like I hope all men aren't evil. I'm not ready to trust another one yet though!

how does a man with his education end up homeless? simple. he clearly had a breakdown during his divorce. you don't know the circumstances of the relationship or his level of mental health. I know all too well it's possible because I have a doctoral degree and came frighteningly close to ending up on the street in the midst of a terrible breakup. some of us are lucky enough to have friends with the means to help us get back on our feet, but many are not.

Roisin Ni She, you forget that at his age and education level, he deserves a high dollar salary. Businesses look to save on costs, not add to them. The unstated truth many people don't know is that the older one gets, the more education works against them with employers. Young and educated is one thing because employers can potentially get many years of service from you. But when one has around 12 years less of reasonable employability, getting hired is not easy. It's one of the real and sad factors the government knows about but no one has come up with a remedy. For most educated older workers, starting their own business is their best options. But unfortunatley, not all older workers have the capital to do that so it can be a tough situation being older and educated.

So hence why the smart ass never put personal relation success above anything.

Judges usually side with women. Even if the woman is in the wrong . very common in the USA. Since being a male.the judge will tell you your an able working man. But fail to realise no one can rebuild themselves off of minimum wage. And have bad credit. It's pretty hard to get ahead. If people actually cared about each other and helped one another out in times of need. Homeless wouldn't be so bad this day and age. Everyone in life needed help one way or another to get where they are. Greediness is not a good trait to have. Being helpful kind caring is a good trait. Our country is so addicted to money . instead of bitching about homeless people maybe try helping them. Well, considering he went homeless she didn't get anything either (you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip). They probably sold the house split the proceeds-she remarried and he spent his money on the RV and was unable to get an adjunct job as a professor so he ended up here. Divorce is damaging to both parties because 60% of Americans make less than 50,000 per year-that barely gets all the bills paid unless you live in a cheaper state (but if you do ya likely aren't make 50k a year). When you live together or are married the upside is you pool your money (to buy a house a car etc.) if you split that house of cars can tumble.

This guy is accurate. Many shelters are more interested in looking good for the city council. For anyone new to being homless they go to such places and have a shock at all the messy people that linger. He isn't lying when sleeping in the woods is better. But that cannot be done without know what you are doing. It is harder in the woods than in a building. But for some folks who know how to do it. It is safer. People see you and what they can get out of you. That is worse in my opinion that any dumb bear. A few bugs and a rainy evening in the cold.

I have relocated at least 10 times in my 60 years of life. I lived in rooming houses, weekly hotels, with relatives short term until I found an apartment with my name on the lease in my forty years of adulthood. In all that time I have lost jobs due to reasons that were my fault and unforseen circumstances. If you do not have a major alcohol or drug problem , illness and you are able to work at some level a job you should be able to find some place affordable to live even if it is not the best cirsumstances. I have never lived in California, but I have lived in NYC, DC, Atlanta, Florida so I know about high rent and cost living while not making a lot of money. But when I know I am making a little, I have to scrimp and budget living in certain areas of town. I believe it is better to have a apartment on a bad side of town than to live on the streets.

Because people have not lived it, they can’t even fathom that type of loss of control over their own selves and life and choices. I’m not excusing bad choices. I’m trying to tell you it’s very possible for the heart and core of you to be so struck you are just mentally and emotionally paralyzed and CAN’T function as usual. We used to shame soldiers with shell shock...as if they had any say over their state. Well, it’s the same sometimes for regular folks. A hit to the core can cause total loss and without a scrap of oomph to even start to recover. We need to understand this. No one wants to believe that can happen to them. It can.

Eric Sartana but a major point is we are no longer a rich country. 22 trillion of debt, corrupt Deep State politicians, international trade agreements that have diluted our job pool, open borders and lack of sovereignty, in California citizens lose 50 cents of every dollar to taxes (gas there now approaching $4/gallon). It's a modern day myth that we are a wealthy nation. I think those coming across the border illegally have some major advantages: free healthcare, easier access to welfare, California supplemental income for immigrants, immunity from prosecution for crimes in sanctuary cities, networking with other illegals to start businesses, gangs, whatever they are into. It's the average traditional American citizen that is really running up against a wall. One estimate purports that 53% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck with zero savings. We are talking American citizens here. Healthcare costs have skyrocketed to ridiculous levels since the introduction of Obamacare. It is truly a frightening world we live in. And sadly, flawed as he is, there appears to be one lone individual sitting in the White House who understands the predictament we're in, but he stands alone, isolated, with no one else in government, even in his own party, willing to lift a finger to help.

@A S - Consider supply and demand regarding increased demand for limited housing units and increased prices for housing, as well as a labor glut from immigration resulting in lower wages. These two economic dynamics it could be argued result (in a free market with limited capital for construction loans post 2008 global recession) with a higher risk of homelessness. Also in most cases immigrants to the West have access to assistance both public and private not readily available to native citizens. I would think this concept is self-evident and not a cause for derision i.e. your "lmao" comment. I do not discount, drug use, alcoholism and mental.illness contributing to homelessness among the native-born, however.

Who? Who is working 3 jobs for at least 40 hours a week and is homeless? What the f are they spending money on? I worked one minimum wage job for 40 hours when I was young, and I could save a little as well as all the rest.
