- Mat Manning is hunting squirrels in bitterly cold weather. The destructive rodents are attacking game feeders where Mat sets up an ambush with his FX Panthera Hunter Compact air rifle. Mat enjoys some good shooting and shares some top tips on how to shoot more squirrels in sub-zero temperatures.
Also in this week’s episode, we have an airgun pellet review. Mat has H&N Baracuda 15, 18 and Hunter ammo on test for accuracy and penetration.

Loving the backward hanger one on the tree spot on😂🤣🐿️🎯👌
Would rather see a sub 12 ft I do all my shooting with .177 when i started it was .22 . Most channel tend to be using more FAC so it's hard to see how good the sub 12 ft are .I personally don't think some the big manufacturers do the checks, before they send out the products.enjoyed the video and pellets on test was helpful
I do my best to keep the tests to sub-12, and also use sub-12 for a lot of my hunting videos. In all honesty, I regard FAC as being a bit better in the wind, and it increases viable kill zones, but the ranges I use it over are much the same as I would for sub-12 (and often less than some shooters seem to think is acceptable range for sub-12 hunting) so the principles and tactics I use would be exactly the same.
Thanks for watching. Mat
I agree
Brilliant video as always..appreciated
Thanks for the kind words.
All the best. Mat
Thank you very much for your videos. They're very clean and very accurate and very clear. Thank you so much. I appreciate them.
My pleasure. It is a lot of hard work, but it's worth it to receive kind feedback like this.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Don’t know if you’ve already tried it but I have good success with wheat and a good glug of vegetable oil mixed in and a splash of spiced aniseed. My thinking is the squirrels prefer the oil content on peanuts
I have experimented a lot with aniseed, which does seem to give some added attraction. Haven't tried veg oil yet, though.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Another nice video, I mix striped sunflower seeds with whole maize in my woodland feeders for my footage. The only time I use peanuts is on residential perms as much less mess.
You're lucky. Whenever I try to mix feed, the squirrels just kick out out to get to whatever they like best.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Great stuff as usual Mat.
Thanks Pete. Hope all is good, mate.
Cheers. Mat
Noticed your regulator at 110 bar. I take it you are above 12flb.
Great shooting 👍
Yes, it's FAC - but comparatively low. I explain at around 09:20.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Great stuff as always
Thank you.
All the best. Mat
I casseroled mine last time. They were great, like very tender rabbit
Squirrel is great to eat. Very underrated.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Sweet shooting as always mat.👍👍
Thank you.
All the best. Mat
Nicely done. Great show as always, Mat.
Thanks William. Glad you liked it.
All the best. Mat
Gray's around here love sunflower seeds.
I have had pretty good results with sunflower seeds, though never quite as good as peanuts.
Thanks for watching. Mat
@@theshootingshow Without a doubt, peanuts are superior. However, at least around here, they are significantly more expensive than sunflower seeds. It's just a good alternative.
Nice one sir good bit of kit
Thanks for watching.
All the best. Mat
Enjoyed the video, somewhat informative 👍👍
Thank you. I do my best to strike what I think is the right balance between action and information.
All the best. Mat
Another interesting and informative video, many thanks Mat 👍
Thanks very much, Nick.
All the best. Mat
Thanks for good video. I use h&n excite in my 177 hw100 with single shot adaptor, only way l could get reliable accuracy. Pellets cheap and make a nice smack! BTW, l am banned from shooting at home, my neibour feeds the greys, what can you do.
Glad to hear you're getting good results. I must give them a try.
Not sure how you're going to deal with that squirrel problem. Maybe try to make your neighbour aware of the impact they have on other wildlife.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Great shooting Matt.. Excellent vid...
Thank you very much.
All the best. Mat
First time I've seen a DonnyFL in the British countryside. Noice.
It's a very good moderator.
Thanks for watching. Mat
I’ve only had one squirrel over the weekend & im guessing it’s also down to the cold weather, thanks for the insight
It certainly could be the cold weather if you're out very early. It's warmer now, so I hope your results pick up.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Sunflower seeds instead of peanuts buddy they go crazy for it, I always chuck a few nuts in to say 70/30
I have tried sunflower seeds and sunflower hearts, but they have never been as effective as peanuts on my permissions. I have also tried mixing them, but the squirrels just kicked everything out so they could get to the peanuts.
Thanks for watching, and for the suggestion. Mat
Have you ever tried the Terminators? Tersa and I use them on the farms because of their really good accuracy out to 50 meters and they lose steam really quick, they don't look like an Autry pellet but you'll be surprised. Just find the rite speed they like and you'll have a new pellet t h at realy thumps!!😂 speeds anywhere from 890fps To 925fps,, and inside the barn at 720fps
Yes I have and they worked quite well in a couple of guns. May have to give them another go sometime.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Hi Mat,,,allways enjoy your informative and down to earth videos, I have a sidewinder scope on my tx200. 177 but would like to know what scope camera did you use on this particular footage and can it be used for night time ratting at about 30mtrs with a lower price point in mind regarding ilumination atb Mike. 21:04
Hi Mike, and thanks for the kind words.
I recorded the scope-cam footage through a GoPro attached via Eagle Vision mount. You could use it to record night-time ratting but would need a source of illumination, such as a scope-mounted lamp. Not sure how the GoPro would cope with recoil, but they seem to be pretty tough.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Have you ever tried leaving the peanuts whole? I find that they have to work harder to get into them. 8)
Yes I have. The problem I had was that I was having to top up feeders very frequently as the shell-on peanuts took up a lot of space but didn't provide a lot of food - so the squirrels were going through them very quickly.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Well done
How do you cook them? Do you at all?
We eat a lot of squirrel. Very underrated and better than rabbit, in my opinion. Small chunks fried in breadcrumbs are delicious, and casseroles too.
Thanks for watching. Mat
You should of tried it out on Sadiq Kans bullet proof Range Rover! Plus the ULEZ Cameras LOL
Hi Matt, really like your videos, what is the peak hat you are wearing please?
Great videos…. What tripod are you using in this video ?
The tripod here is a Primos Trigger Stick. Great piece of kit.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Do you notice any poi shift with that compact from day to day?
I think you’ve spoilt them with nuts. I use poultry corn from mole valley £9.75 for 20kg, there’s one over at gillingham. Not far from you. I watch squirrels heading in from 50-60m away and they get straight on it.
I shop there quite frequently, and have tried poultry corn / mixed corn many times. The problem I have found with it is that it can't compete with alternative food sources such as game feeders, acorns and beech mast, which spread squirrels out when they are present. Even when these other food sources are around, peanuts seem to create a real hotspot that squirrels will visit in preference to the rest.
That is just my experience, though - and I shoot the best part of 1000 squirrels a year over several large permissions, so it's important to make the best use of my time. If poultry corn is working for you, stick with it.
All the best. Mat
So cold,uncle?
Where did you Purchase your hat from please
