    Hi Esther! Another informative video and I love the fact you get to the point with what you want to demonstrate. Allows for me to watch a number of your videos in one sitting. I did try something that I wanted to share with you. I cut a gallon water jug in half completely and found that the top slides inside the bottom half with a pretty snug fit. My thinking is to cut out the duck tape step so that if I have to water I don't have to rip the tape off. This is definitely an experiment like winter sowing is my first time experience this year as well. You are bringing that side of me out which is pretty neat. Thanks for taking the time to share your science lab with us. And I love the cats in the garden. I too put a netting over my monarchs every year in hopes they make it :)

    Hi Esther, the Celosia looks awesome! I cannot wait to see it in your planters! I've managed to gather six more jugs for planting tomorrow. I'm sowing Spotted Bee-Balm and the rest of my peppers. I'm excited to see the next update on your new garden plot. 😎

    good morning Esther.. I was wondering if you would show some address (like p.o. box) where people can send you seeds. I had marigold and zinnia and some other very interesting flowers and saved tone of seeds. I would be very happy to send you some now that you have the rented ares you could use lots of seeds. Like zinnia and marigold, just trow them all over, they will grow.

    I finally got about 9 gallon jubs planted...put way too many seeds in, but some of them are older seeds so i just will cover my bases! If they all grow im going to have to have a seedling sale!

    Last year I grew the Plumeria zinnias and put them in a coco coir lined planter on my deck with microdwarf tomatoes. It wasn't my smartest gardening combo, but I plan to do the short zinnias again. Nasturtiums grow really well in containers as well during cool season. Mine looked amazing in hanging pots all spring and I had several neighbors bring up how nice they were on our deck.

    I am very interested in the winter sowing. Tried for the fist time this year. I think two of my containers have drown, because I forgot to cut holes in the bottom. Looking forward to seeing the results of your new plot of land, you have a lot of clean up to do to get it ready for planting. Good luck with your garden

    I don’t winter sow but I certainly will be able to use the cat treat container idea for protective domes for seedlings (with holes drilled, of course)!

      @@kittiew260 yes fingers crossed for you. Are daytime temps in 20s too? They can survive a week of nights in 20s if covered at night. The sun in daytime will warm them up 10-15 degrees warmer than outdoor temps. You may yet be ok.

    Hi Esther! Me too! Hoping for marigolds this year, last year none came up :( but 1st time I'm growing celosia, got the idea of velvety brains from you last year, my local park allowed me to harvest a head of seeds from there!

      Wohoo about trying the celosia! I hope they turn out great. That stinks no marigolds came up for you last year. I've had success with them in the past and I hope you do this year as well.

    Hi Esther! I'm in Baltimore zone 7b and I'm going to winter sow in a large volume this year - I have Statice, Gomphrena, Yarrow, Amaranth, Perennial Aster, Joe Pye-Weed, Spider Flower. Do you think any of these are not a good candidate for winter sowing or do you have any advice on the timeline for when to start these for the winter sowing? I see that you have had great success with this method so I thought I'd ask for any thoughts you may have. Much appreciated!!

    Hi Esther, a couple of questions about the "Temptations" container. I usually have containers that have room for 4" of soil and 6" of growing room. How tall was that container so that you'd have that growing room? My last frost date is April 27th, when can I put my flower seeds in shorter containers like that and when should they be safely transplanted into my containers? What about lettuce and things like red noodle beans? I have a pack of Queen Lime zinnias that I don't want to take a chance with. As always, thanks so much for your help:) P.S. Your hair looks so pretty today:):):)

    • @EsthersGardeningAdventures
      @EsthersGardeningAdventures  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for the compliment about my hair. The containers you described sound like they'd work fine. I should note, this is my first time trying those cat treat containers. I'd say as long as the container is big enough, you can winter sow them at any point in your winter sowing season.

  • @carolparrish9879

    I have a question?? I have a bunch of those “cat treat” type containers. How are you going to get the plants out through the top?

    Hi Esther this is my 3rd year winter sowing. I love it so much! Also, this is my 2nd year winter sowing flowers. I sowing 8 flower varieties. How many flower seeds should I ws in each milk jug? I want to dedicate a 4ft by 4ft section of my garden for flowers to attract more pollinators.

    • @EsthersGardeningAdventures
      @EsthersGardeningAdventures  2 года назад +1

      I'd say under 10 in most cases. I've been doing 6-8 for most flowers on average for a 1 gallon container.

    • @EsthersGardeningAdventures
      @EsthersGardeningAdventures  2 года назад +1

      One additional thought. Sometimes the seeds are so small all you can do is sprinkle them and that's ok to do too

    • @EsthersGardeningAdventures
      @EsthersGardeningAdventures  2 года назад

      Any frost hearty plants you can transplant if they have their 2nd set of leaves, but summer plants you want to wait to transplant until after your average last frost date for the area and really not until nights both the past few and the next several are consistently in the 50s.

    Do you find that growing flowers helps with the veggies in general? Or mostly the marigolds?

    • @EsthersGardeningAdventures
      @EsthersGardeningAdventures  2 года назад +1

      I find that growing flowers in general helps attract pollinators (bees, butterflies etc), which in turn helps your vegetable garden.

      What zone/area are you in (or when is your average last frost date?) For zones 8+ you are probably getting near the end of the window for winter sowing (through March) but zones 7 and lower have until mid-April
