    This was lovely. Look at that engine go! I'm surprised that your little clockwork oiler didn't go dry in the fast part. Great work, here. This has been fascinating to watch.

    I remember watching that video where you fitted that new wheel to the mechanical lubricator on the Stuart 5A it really does look the part here.

    I really like the way the wood board under the boiler is smoking. That's what you call "baking it in."

    Thanks for the video Keith, Shows what a well designed boiler can do. Best get one fast before the demand and then price goes up :o)

    Nice video. Awesome boiler. At that rate, a live steam injector might have to get its water supply from the bath in the background.

    That boiler really is a cracker of a steamer! Cant thank you enough for this content but i am a bit cross, i just discovered you to research a 5" build im about to partake on which will be my first.After a few days of watching your content i now also just HAVE to build a traction engine, vertical boiler and some form of small stationary engine as well! GRR ;)

    Why is the water level bouncing in the site glass? Is that due to priming? The fire's so hot it caught the base on fire..

    A very nice boiler and a very nice 5A. Thanks for sharing Keith! That set up would make a very nice boiler and engine for a small steam boat or canoe, and would make a cracking video series!!

      And somewhere on an old video Keith can be heard saying " I always wanted to build a boat, but so far I only have the propeller"........so now he has a boiler made in heaven, you may be in luck.

    • @keithappleton

      Yes it would Billy, I am sorely tempted, but as I have a lot of work on at the moment and now that includes the 5 inch gauge locomotive that Simon dropped off at my place to be converted into "Hogwarts Castle" - that should be an interesting project }:-)))

    I noticed in a video you uploaded a few days ago that you had a look at a Stanley steam car. If you haven't already I would suggest looking up Doble steam cars, they are pretty impressive from an engineers point of view.

    Excellent run! That boiler's a winner! But I think it's baseboard is getting a wee bit toasty, mate!

  • @VehicularBrit
    @VehicularBrit 6 лет назад +13

    It may have been something else, but it did look like that baseboard was starting to smoke a bit from the heat?

    • @NathanielKempson
      @NathanielKempson 6 лет назад +2

      I thought that aswell, i want sure weather it was that or just the rain water turning to steam from the heat of the ashpan but it does appear to be coming from underneath the basboard aswell.

    • @A.Lifecraft
      @A.Lifecraft 4 года назад

      There is water soaked into the baseboard obviously. When the baseboard heats up from the ashtray, the water evaporates and steam emerges along the pores of the wood. Woodgrain is made to conduct water afterall.

  • @R3AP79
    @R3AP79 6 лет назад +1

    Another great vid! What was all the smoke from near the end of the vid? It almost looked like the base plate was beginning to burn.

  • @brianbeales6520
    @brianbeales6520 6 лет назад

    An observation to the steam coming of the base board. Would a set of spacers between boiler base and the board alleviate the heat transfer

  • @JonatanGronoset
    @JonatanGronoset 6 лет назад +1

    Why all the smoke around the boiler baseboard? Is the varnish being burnt? That cast iron ring must be quite hot by now...

    Have you ever made a steam engine do something productive for you? I know its fun watching the wheel spin and all, but it would be cool to actually get some real use out of them.

    I've just rewatching this video and having a think about it. Have you got a definite plan in mind as to how you will supply the feedwater? I've seen that you have various weir style pumps. Won't the present hand pump you have be large enough as an emergency back up once you have fitted a permanent powered pump of some description? Just as a matter of interest do you know how what the water capacity is or how much water it uses when steaming hard ?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 лет назад +3

      I am going to fit a larger pump anyway and an injector then take it from there. I don't really do stats on things like water consumption etc ....... but the specifications should be on the www.castleinstruments.co.uk website

    Am i right in saying that, generally speaking you should see an orangey red glow mixed with flames, and at the same time black lumps of coal ready to be lit by the glow? I havnt spent much time firing engines in my life, but from the very little time spent on the footplate thats what I have picked up?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  5 лет назад +2

      when my little locomotive is running and pulling hard the fire is almost white hot - !

    • @NathanielKempson
      @NathanielKempson 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah! The amount of heat produced in the locos at Lynton & Barnstaple is mental. They sit there all calm and quiet, then you open the fire hole door and its a blazing inferno to rival the sun! And when they blast up the 1in50 from Killington Lane, well. You open that door even for a split second and you aint got no arm hairs left hahahahaha. I think I probably meant when the loco is sat still, lumps of black ontop of the glow ready to be burnt when you set off. But yeah, the firing irons and sometimes the shovels come out the firebox glowing red sometimes white.

    Keith, Any chance you can mention the retail price of the v6? Just a ballpark in pounds will do.
    They must be thousands? Freight to Australia would be prohibitive as well!

    I would love to see an automated way of keeping the boiler water level constant. Is that possible?

    • @JonatanGronoset
      @JonatanGronoset 6 лет назад

      Yes, an engine-driven water pump with a bypass valve. If you run the engine at a constant speed you can fine tune the valve to precicely make up for the water used by the engine.

    I know holes in fires far too well.... especially in Austerity Saddle Tanks and Ivatt 2MT Tanks in the full size....
