    Great engine Sam, and I definitely agree that this period is the 'Golden Age'- locos ran well, were reasonably detailed and didn't cost a fortune!

    In my opinion Sam, factory weathering is always crap. Doing your own weathering is always better. Removing factory weathering is somewhat difficult

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah that's probably a fair comment - I've heard quite a few people saying that about factory weathering!

    Back in November 2017, I also bought one of these Princess Royals. Mine is in BR Green and she is 46212 'Duchess of Kent'. I got her from a small model shop in a town called Ngongotaha for $150 (I think that equals to £75). Detail wise - I think she's half way between the Railroad and Railways Ranges. Sadly mine doesn't run too well, but I still think she's a nice piece of kit, if you will.

    • @DC4260Productions
      @DC4260Productions 5 лет назад

      And this is where the silly part comes in. Just four days after I bought the Princess Royal, I got a brand-new Hornby Peppercorn K1. That engine was $199, and she's in BR lined black with the number 62032. I probably should run the K1 again soon, since I haven't done so in a while.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 лет назад

      Great to hear you got one too £75 sounds about spot on! I would agree though, it's certainly between the Railroad and Railways range! And the K1s really are fantastic too! :D

    A great revieview, Sam. The princess was a very atractive model, with amazing quality and perfomance, despite the age. I personaly think that the weathering is good, nothing out of this world, but Its very convincing model. Some people may think its bad, but to me it just adds more charm to the loco. Anyways, hope you're having a nice day, and I'll see you next time.

    Good thing you showed the slow speed running Sam. It answers a question that was hanging over from the Bachmann H1 review. The LBSCR H1 prototype wheels were only one and a half inches larger than those on the Princess Royal Class - half a millimetre difference in 00 scale. That proves that with more thought, Bachmann could have made the H1 with better slow speed running if they had chosen the right gearing and motor combination.
    When you know the size of the driving wheels, the top speed of the engine in real life, the starting rpm of the model's electric motor and its top speed, you can work out a good gear ratio in less than five minutes. Sometimes it's necessary to choose an electric motor with a lower top speed or lower starting voltage/speed. Well within the capabilities of any competent manufacturer. When it takes months of work to produce a detailed model, there's no excuse for a manufacturer not doing the small amount of work needed for proper motor and gear selection that will result in realistic running and an impression of quality.
    That said, it looks like Hornby are getting it spot on!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 лет назад

      I absolutely agree - I reckon it must be the gearing, and the 5 pole motor that does it - I still can't find a Pacific that runs better than these Hornby 2001 models! I agree with you - a little more care in mechanism design from Bachmann would go a long way!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Lovely engines Princesses . I’ve a BR Crimson one from the same era. Curiously she is quite light footed. I might have a look at the forward bogie in case it’s sprung too much reducing tractive power . I’ve also a Triang Hornby Princess Elizabeth which is too short but as it was bought by my parents for Christmas back in 1971 it’s still one of my favourites.

    • @SamsTrains

    I agree with you Sam about the weathering on the tender. It's a bit too high really and it does detract from the details on the tender. I personally love weathered locomotives, but too much does take away the realism. Great job on the review and video!

    Great video and review of one of my 3 favourite LMS classes, the other two being the Royal Scot and Jubilee. The BR Express Blue really suits the Princess Royal as it does the Duchess. I really believe if Hornby can re-tool the Duchess then surely they can do the same for the Princess Royal. On a totally different note i have finally bought a Large Logo Hornby class 50, it is a recent release which is named "Leviathan". I look forward to your next video as always. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary.

    This is a gorgeous loco! Thanks for sharing it with us. As always, your content is awesome! (P.S. I love weathering on models, especially steam locos; it gives them that extra realism: steam trains were really grimy in real life, so nice clean locos look good but look less realistic. That being said, I think they went a bit overboard on the tender when compared to the loco.)

      ☺️ Actually, I've just come back to model trains after a couple of decades (I used to build a layout with my dad when I was a kid). In fact, I just got my first OO loco today in the mail! Following your recommendations, I finally chose the Gresley A1 Doncaster (with the Sheffield Pullman set, in order to get me started with track and accessories) and was able to get it half the listed price in an eBay auction! So I'm pretty happy! It's smaller than what I thought it would be... but, then again, last time I had one I was about 7-8... so the world looked bigger back then, hahaha. It's really a beauty, like you said. Even though it might not be as detailed as others, being that small, it just looks so delicately detailed. Anyway, I'm not at all skilled... I dabble; and I remember we used to weather our trains back then -or, rather, my dad did that and I watched him do it- but I'm not planning on weathering this one because I'm sure it'd muck it up. I do however weather other things, with varying degrees of success. In fact, I've just weathered a Christmas tree toy train set (the kind that goes around the tree half way up the tree) and it doesn't look bad: it gives it a nice vintage feel where it used to have a very plasticy look. (I also put some LEDs in its cars and it now looks like it cost 3 times as much as it did!)

    I think light weathering is most appropriate for the post-WW2 grouping and early BR era that this belongs to. In austerity Britain, loco cleaning wouldn't have been a huge priority. Unlike the inter-war grouping days when the railway companies would ensure their express locos would be clean, but even then they wouldn't always be as clean as you see in preservation.

    Hi Sam. I've always wanted to start my railway, but the problem is that I live in Colombia and if I want to buy a loco, I have to do it from a website like hattons, and then pay for the transport all the way from UK TO Colombia. The thing is, DC is more affordable to me, but it wolud be more complicated if then I'd like to try more than one loco at time and turn to DCC. What do you recommend me?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Andres! Sorry to hear about that - is the postage very expensive then? DCC is great for running multiple locos and using sound but it is very expensive. I still have a lot of fun with my DC trains - so it's really up to you!
