I have a 2012 Transit Connect. I can make a recommendations to increase transmission service life. First, absolutely make sure you change the fluid on schedule. Next its how you use it. On the shifter is a button which you can use to turn the OD off. I recommend you turn OD off when driving at any speeds below 45mph, heck I usually keep OD off unless I'm doing a steady 50 or more for extended periods. Here's why I do this. These little engines do not have much torque at lower rpms. The transmissions are programmed to go into OD too early in my opinion. I guess for emissions reasons. Anyway the problem is lack of torque causes the transmission to shift down from OD too frequently at lower speeds. Then it shifts back up. Up and down, up and down..... it wears it out. Keep it out of OD at lower speeds, especially in higher traffic conditions. (note, the OD on function will always switch back to on after restarting the engine so if needed, you have to turn it back off each time you start it back up). Next, driving habits of taking your foot all the way off the gas pedal and then back on again also cause unnecessary wear on the transmission. When you pull your foot all the way off, the throttle position sensor unlocks to torque converter. Then you step down again and it locks back up. It's unnecessary wear. If you have to back off the throttle momentarily thats fine, but if you can avoid pulling your foot all the off, it will help prevent unnecessary unlocking and locking of the torque converter. Pull back but keep you foot ever so slightly down and the converter will stay locked.
Well this is one of the most informative, straightforward, transit connect precautionary videos that I've seen. She doesn't glam up or dramatize the drawbacks or anything that makes me wanna pull out my hair! ( That happens when the person in the video likes the sound of his or her voice) VERY HELPFUL. VERY PROFESSIONAL. great job! New subscriber! That's me!
Just got my vehicle back from the mechanic shop and he said that the Valve Cover Gasket needs to be replaced because the #4 spark plug was full of oil.
@josephtutor8901 there are several videos on it. The only two places you put a small dab of silicone is where there's a joint in the head, left side I believe. I highly advise to buy an OEM gasket from Ford. The aftermarket ones tend to fail quicker. Same engine in the Ford Focus.
Another common issue I've encountered is a bad door ajar switch, which intermittently prevents you from locking the doors. It's part of the door latch assembly, which was a poor design considering how frequently the switches go bad. I opted for the simple fix of connecting two wires at the harness to make it think the door is always closed, so it no longer is an issue with the door locking and warning chimes going off while driving.
makes it very clear in the intro at the video that this isn't a trustworthy guide, as even the title says this is a first gen Transit, the thumbnail says it's a first gen Transit, and she opens that she thinks it's a second gen, and somehow they still published this video
How's about the motor mounts, I've replaced them twice and it's vibrating again. It's got 230,000 miles. I usually repair myself. This thing is like a toy. Lol
As far as the transmission, often its just the shift solenoids that go bad, and have to be replaced. They are easy to replace, just by dropping the transmission pan
You forgot to mention that these (and most newer FORD transmissions) are electronically adaptable meaning, they can sense who is driving the Van and how they drive and thus "adapt" thus setting codes for individual drivers. Before assuming you got a problem with weird shifting - clear the codes.
So basically what you’re saying is, it’s a pile of junk. Lol. Just teasing. To be fair to Ford, these are blanket problems that essentially every brand is plagued with. If you need to do a video on say a VW, you could just dub someone else’s voice over to say Jetta, instead of Transit Connect, and every detail would still be factual.
Motor mounts! They always go out on these things. The heater stops working quickly when the water level drops and inch. Tranny solenoids. Keys wear out. Drive shaft bearings vibration. There are a lot of things in a cheap van that can go out!
I have a 2013 I bought new and it has 118k miles on the odometer. So far I’ve had a sliding door come off, replaced the water pump, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, wheel bearings, engine mount, and 4-5 sets of tires and brakes. Overall it’s been a money maker, operating costs are still less than half of my old f250.
We had 2 of these in Pittsburgh, Pa at my old shop. They were horrible on wet / brick roads “hills”. They handle horrible on the highway in winds. I swear the ones we had were 3 speed. It was either Redline or Lugging. Gas Mileage wasn’t good either. Just a bad design/weight ratio. If it had an “AWD - 4spd Manual Transmission option then you might have something.
I own one of these I use it for my personal use and business. The only thing I haven't encouraged is the injector issues. I will add to this that at 220k miles the valve seals start leaking oil. Eventually it will get bad enough to foul out the plugs. Mine started fouling plugs at 240k miles plus the trans started slipping like this lady says. Ended up putting a reman engine and trans in it.
I bought my transit used with 158,000 miles.. never asked the previous owner if he’s done a transmission fluid change but at this point should I even bother? Or just leave it how it is?
i would service it, these tranies go out pretty commonly. i bought mine with it already replaced at 140k mi. but frequent services will keep it healthy. not too expensive but at least check it like in the video
Liked the creator, but disagrre with most problems except hinges, easy fix. I would add coolant leaks and hard to seal valve cover, bad engine mounts, and front wheel bearings that need replacing all the time.
2012 with 175000 miles on it, I bought it with 140000 miles and so far I’ve had to replace the cooling fan, water outlet( gasket was leaking all the coolant), harmonic balancer, motor mounts and that’s it still going strong I try to drive within 2 to 3 rpm’s and that’s has helped a lot.
unrelated to all of these one of my motor mounts deterioirated and the water pump / gasket started leaking after driving 7 hours in the desert 🤪. In the meantime 'll be mentally preparing for when one of these issues show up.
All of these eventually need the top motor mount replaced. It can make it seem like the car has major issues. But a new motor mount will make it drive smooth as new. Also the front wheel bearings go bad quickly
@@04dram04 yes it does wonders & is a pretty simple fix but make sure you get the oem mount after reading many comments non-Ford brand mounts disengrates prematurely like less than a year which is ridiculous so spend the dough for the ford fomo one which has a hydralic damper or whatever it's called vs the other brands. When I bought mine there was one only one other brand than ford that also has the hydraulic damper but just go fomo ford.
Don't forget the output shaft seals, auto trans. If your offroad.alot.With volcanic ash/sand over the shafts.or still on fire.. so actually NO it's OK to forget about them sorry for the fuss for nothing!
These things eat motor mounts. Sounds like an exhaust leak, and vibrates like crazy. Usually, it is best to replace all 3, as the shaking quickly damages the others and they are just as inadequate.
Well spoken and i can tell by how you handle tools and engine parts that you have some experience. Good job. Oh by the way, some people are busting your chops about how you had a hickup about what generation. Well, piss on them. Keep up the good work. My father was an engine mechanic his entire life. Did police cars, city vehicals, ect , fire trucks. Also Sealtest icecream trucks. I got all the ice cream we could eat, lol. Back in the late 60s and 1970s.
3:56 my 2013 TC overheated when I was idling waiting at an airport waiting to pick someone up, and I wasn't paying attention to the temperature gauge skyrocketing. The plastic heater hose connector they use on these things spontaneously blew apart under the temperature and pressure stress, making for a fine display of steam and smoke. It seems the fans won't come on from temperature so maybe that cylinder head temp sensor or PCM control needs looking into. In the meantime I just turn on the AC when I'm idling to conveniently keep the temperature in control, so it switches the condenser fan on by default. 4:42 Note: Components 16 and 17 in the engine compartment fuse box are the cooling fan low speed and high speed relays, not fuses
I love my 2010 xlt overheated second day I bought it. -The fix was to replace “coolant outlet pipe” (top right side of engine) it was losing out coolant there also waterpump seal failed too, behind plastic shroud could see it weeping so was leaking at both those points - overheated it two years later going up a long steep hill. Coolant hose tear could fit 4 fingers it. Replaced it (it’s the one with 3 hoses attached to T fitting in the front left engine bay. - change valve cover gasket. The issue I have not fixed yet is powersteering leak. I top off every 3 months I honestly love this van it’s got 194k
I own a 2012, that I purchase MF new, and I still drive it to this day. I only have 50 something thousand miles on it though. Based on my experience, you could’ve done a top 50 problems with the Ford transit connect. 😂
I just bought my 2011 in February and it's leaking coolant right by the front passenger tire. A guy came and looked. He said to put coolant in the container but it will still leak. Not sure how expensive this will be to fix but hopefully not a lot. I love my little van.
No real mechanical issues with my 2010 Connect.... But, rust has become a major issue... UK vehicle succumbed to winter salt on the roads I suppose 😮💨
I can happily say i have a 2012 ford transit connect 2.0 for 6 years drive everyday all over the United state and my transmission and engine are good as he'll
Transmission was severely slipping then it just stopped working all together. Gonna diagnose it soon. Haven’t had any problems with my van till it hit 80,000. Had water pump break and the cooling fan didn’t work
2:14 I see a bunch of these in my area, they alway have engine issue , some are under some only have 150k miles on em.wonder if a low maintenance 90's civic engine would fit.
I appreciate your professional Automotive Advice videos. The 2012 Transit def. has the ease of accessibility to the Fuel Injectors~! Are they fairly expensive ?

I owned 2 of these van nonsense I don't have those problems. 😊
I would definitely add "Valve Cover Gasket". Oil passes through gasket to the spark plugs causing rough idle. Very common and pretty easy/cheap fix.
+Shane Shreve Thanks for the feedback!
Just replaced the valve cover gaskets myself. Went to change spark plugs at 100k and found a whole mess of oil inside the wells.
@Joseph Tutor Wondering the same. Let me know if you get reply
Just got my vehicle back from the mechanic shop and he said that the Valve Cover Gasket needs to be replaced because the #4 spark plug was full of oil.

I have this problem with the passenger side front door. I have to keep opening and closing it to get it locked properly at times.
got a 2013 replaced trans at 210,000 miles got close to 300,000.knock on wood no other major problems.Keep on trucking

What the hell they can adapt to the drivers Dan that pretty cool technology

Hi there.
Is anyone available for answer a question?
Any advice on what to look for since my reverse sensor and reverse lights don’t work?
Motor mounts! They always go out on these things. The heater stops working quickly when the water level drops and inch. Tranny solenoids. Keys wear out. Drive shaft bearings vibration. There are a lot of things in a cheap van that can go out!
Great video!
I suppose the aggressive sill rusting goes without saying...!

Our top problem with our 2011 Transit Connect: Squirrels. They get into the engine compartment, make nests, and eat the wiring harnesses.
Liked the creator, but disagrre with most problems except hinges, easy fix. I would add coolant leaks and hard to seal valve cover, bad engine mounts, and front wheel bearings that need replacing all the time.

Stopped watching after only 5 seconds... when she thought it was a 2nd generation.
This was pretty much a great video, which Transit Connect is the best one to get and which one is the one you want to stay away from?
There's 2 levers on the side of my driver's seat one reclines what does the other do
unrelated to all of these one of my motor mounts deterioirated and the water pump / gasket started leaking after driving 7 hours in the desert 🤪. In the meantime 'll be mentally preparing for when one of these issues show up.
What did you mean by good transmission fluid level means a transmission rebuild?...if it's not shifting?
This was very straight forward, simple and informative, a great teacher. Thanks for the video!
I'm looking at getting one of these for a camper conversion. Thanks for the great info.
Same here
Keep it as light as you can ....

I’d love this generation. It was so versatile.
The two most common issues on these are the top motor mount going out, and the front wheel bearings going bad early

I like the way she gives it to ya straight.
Is Ford Transit connect 2010,2011,2012,2013 have the same transmission?
Boring the video didn't help at all
Why does it drink so much gas?
You mean first gen
Are you single😮

QUESTION I saw an immaculate 2007 ford connect van-diesel for sale in united kingdom--does u s a make these diesel vans ?????
I FUC#$N Love This Channel ! Thank You !
The title says 1st generation, but you state in the video its a 2nd generation. Which is it....

I’m surprised those door open/ajar sensors weren’t addressed. Holy shirt, those can frustrate a driver.
Also they have leaking gas problems. I have 2011 transit

Excellent & very clear. thank you from a woman!
Is the ticking sound during idle normal in these engines? Sticky lifters maybe?
Any chance you can tell me where the bank 1 sensor 1 (oxygen sensor) is located on this vehicle can you??
Not sure which one it is. Thanks
I really like these videos, good information 👌
Same. Very entertaining.
I don't put many miles on mine. Once year I use Seafoam in my tank as a preventative.
I swapped trany to manual :)
1st generation not 2nd!
She is fantastic! Thank you!
Would this make a good family car ?
No

How do you tell what Generation you have ? Mine is 2013 XLT
You have a second gen. The first gen was released in Europe only. They came to the US with this generation. 2013 was the last year of this generation.
