- Check out the first monster battle of 2008. In this video we pitch the new Kawasaki ZX-10R against the Yamaha R1 - our superbike of choice for 2007. The ZX-10R has already ripped up the rule book by producing a staggering 170bhp - 8bhp more than the R1. It also flew down our test track at a genuine 184mph, in the wet! But for this test we take both bikes to Brands Hatch and put them through their paces, to find out if all this is enough for the Kawasaki to knock the Yamaha off its perch. I have an 08 zx10r and agree it is a beast and does spin up and wobble when cornering at high speeds but that just adds to the fun.
No way, r 1 is super stable on bad roads now thats fun
well said man, had a 636 and loved the powerband..but it's hard to find a sport bike that won't put a grin on your face..riding anything that screams is fun..no matter who makes it
Question, why do you do the response to the bikes right along side the track where the bikes are flying by and we cant hear you?

StuYZFR1 is right, brake horsepower and torque figures quoted by the factories are measured at the output shaft of the engine. The term brake horsepower refers to an old method of determining the power output of an engine called a "brake band" which would provide a resistance to the engine so the work done by the engine could be calculated, like a dyno's "rolling road". Flywheels are used to alter the characteristics of an engine but i'm not sure if it'd make much of a difference to the graphs.

I just gotta say, Hallelujah brother. I love my '05 R1, but if you're on a liter, you're kickin' ass, period. 600's are a little bit more decisive, depending on the year (I used to have an '08 R6), but still, if you're riding a sportbike, and you are riding what you want, you won't be happier!

agreed, this bike's new styling is taking kawasaki into a whole other direction, very modern, light weight, great lines, i love it!! It looks like a robot!
it said it was still worth over 5grand and it was a good friend of mine and well taken care of with all those new parts, i thought it was worth it...and i did for months look around right until summer arrived cuz i wanted a 1000RR with the exhaust still under the tail, and really a 06' blue/yellow scheme for paint!

The ninja is giving the r1 that like "hey man. Do we really need to go through with this? I mean you already know what will happen if you go against me!" lol. Both bikes are awesome.

@sharky1993x how long do you think it takes to save up enough money for one? im at around 2,000 right now, im 16 and school just started. so if i get a job for all of school how long you think?(i make most of my money over summer working with dad). so wouldn't have the job probly when summer comes.

i really like both the kawa and the R1 , incredible machines when it comes to maniablilty ... Used to go roadtrips with a 2007 model of the R1 and race with my mates ninja..
but unfortunately the BMW s1000rr won my heart and i sold the R1 and currently lookin for a new home for the golf4 :$

I like the Kawi personally. The Yamaha always looks good though. I see far more ZX10's where I'm from. I wish Honda didn't jack up the nose on the 2008 Cbr 1000. That bike is getting great reviews and I'm a Honda guy. But that nose killed it for me. Can't wait to hear the reports on a 4 way majors 1000cc shootout.

it puts me off on the slightest ugliness on a bike but the exhaust on the zx is a put off the r1 is absoloutley wicked on looks but i want a bike thats just so loud but the exhausts to fit on are ilegal wat exhaust would you say to top the other bikes?

ZX10 isn't the best 1000 but it's the track king.

i've always had kawasaki, but i just absolutely hate the front face... the headlights... uuuuuggghhhh... hidious! i cant wait for the new body style to come out!
im all about the looks and the ZX-10 has it all.......not to mentioned its fast 1000cc definately a plus...awesome machine highly recomended!!!!
It all comes down to the track, every track is different and every bike performs differently on each track. Some tracks are better for V twins some for inline 4 some for a triple some for a V4 .... you can't say this bike is better just because it was faster around this track. The best way how to judge this is take them to different tracks and then do an average and who comes out on top is the winner.
It's all rider and preference. These bikes are all so close. The difference is where the torque curve peaks or relaxes. Honda is usually underrated because of how smooth the torque is throughout the range. It seems as if the engine lacks personality, but it's all rider and preference.

Michalzst, both the 10R and the R1 do 100mph in first gear, not kph.
but yeah.... the output at the rear wheels do differ..

The 08 .. Hard to decide which is better looking for me.. The brand new ZX10Rs look cooler than the R1s, depending on how u look at em though

explain to me how...and this is not just because i own a 05. The 04-05 R1 were a big hit world wide. So yamaha wanted to continue with basically the same design with little changes to it so they can call it a "new model" the only changes that yamaha did to the 08 to call it a new model is widen the wind pits of the bike(which doesn't make look as sharp) change the odometer design, and trim the back end exposing more of the exaust and making the heat radidate more to the raider and passenger.
Finally the braun and gold 'color' of the brakes and wheels is gone! I hated that. I still think the wind shield is too low for road usage.
8 r1_great bike but how many people have had probs with worn intake valves got mine done under warranty after a lot of denial from yam uk any body else i herd its not as rare as they like to make out!

@solidr1 He's clearly not quoting the power at the crank as it proves nothing, he's saying the power they've recorded at the rear wheel. Also, they're quoting the speed they've tested the bikes at, the speed manufacturers say the bikes will go is neither here nor there, it is the speed that can actually be achieved that counts.

Ok... Are they comapring the 2008 ZX-10 to the 2007 R1? That's what it sounds like in the info. If so that's not really a fair match-up.

Honda motors are excellent, yes, and I'd say overall their reliability is on par with Suzuki, and slightly better than Kawasaki. I've seen Suzuki street bikes routinely going at least 50k miles without any major engine work. The Hayabusas will easily go like that for 80 or 100 thousand miles...The only one of the big four I am biased against is Yamaha. And I own a Yamaha (and yes, I also own a Suzuki). Overall, they are made with lower quality parts than the others, period.
As pittmeister rightly states,they are talking about horsepower at the wheel.
i owned until last year the first fuel injected R1 it was a great bike(150+bhp). i thought that was fast so these must be mental.
I say this facia styling the R1 has it, as for the body,chasis the Kawi has it.. I think Kawi came out with another R1 threat though.. they always have the power now they have a lighter setup then the R1 use to be the other way around a few years back now Yamaha and HONDA when it comes to the heavy weights... but we will see later on in the season..
my 2003 R1 went into have a new engine and box fitted under warrenty after i blew it, they tried to blame my harris rearsets at first

Why do most of MCN's videos have annoying noises that prevent people from listening to them? Come on, one video and it's the cars, another video and it's the wind...this one is another fine example.

what kind of r1 are they driving? because a r1 have 180bhp not 160:P
It's just like anything else, whatever feels good to one person doesn't mean it'll feel good for everyone. Personally I find the Kawasaki bikes to be more comfortable and fit me better.

Only reason i bought the 08 cbr1000 over the 08 zx10 was looks and feel...I just felt comfier on teh Honda and liked the looks better. I raced 2 zx10's and we were neck and neck..so reality I think everyone should buy the one they feel best on..if ur gonan rid eont eh street they are all good enough. Sadly my cbr was stolen a month ago..bummer

@lukelukewayne it's the rider not the bike, any ssp or sbk these days are equipped with the best it all comes down to the rider, not the bike.
why? they're essentially neck and neck..it all comes down to what your flavour is..kawis hav e always had notoriously broad powerbands too..that's a fact
You know what the best part about bikes getting a more efficient 'look' these days? Idiots can't stretch and slam them because that would just look terrible on at least the new R1.
Well i got me a ZX10R,cause of the weather ive not done many miles.but i'll tell u what...it's a great bike,lighter feeling then last years,loves the corners and with me G/F on the back i didnt even feel like she was there.got a tail tidy on and a Two brothewrs racing exhaust and boy am i getting a pull.exup vavle gone,cat gone and now u do need ear plugs.cant wait for a dry day
if i was to buy a 1000cc bike in 07, it would br an r1, if i was to buy a bike in 08, cbr fireblade, but for 09... has to be the new zx10r. just looks so nice with the white chequered flag at the bottom of the body work. i do think that the r1 is a very nice bike but you cant beat the green of a ninja :)
