This is great news Anthony. I tried the Denoise on a few images I just took with my A7RIV and the results were terrific. Great job Adobe and great job Anthony for your usual clear explanations.
I've tried the new AI Denoise on a few " problem " images and I have to say I'm very impressed! My AI denoise defaults to 50 which seems to do a great job. Better still is this improves my workflow. I generally apply a linear profile to all my raw files in the first instance and set my white balance. After reducing sharpness to zero I then take it into Topaz Denoise. For very noisy images however I usually take the raw file into Topaz first as I feel it gives better results than sending a converted tiff via lightroom using " edit in ". The problem with this workflow is I could never send my actual raw file with my linear profile applied by going direct to Topaz. With this new LR Denoise not only can I apply my linear profile at the beginning but LR is actually working with my raw file to do the Denoise. The resulting DNG created shows no colour shifts and is identical to my raw file, less the noise ☺️ The resultant DNG seems to retain great post editing ability too. All in all I think Adobe did very well here 👍
Hi Anthony. Thank you for all your excellent videos comparing noise reduction. I do have a request though. A lot of my work involves portraiture, sometimes featuring musicians in very dark rooms. Noise is very much an issue. Would it be possible for you to add a noisy human portrait to your test images? I've been looking at LR's new AI noise reduction for portraits and it seems to make skin very plastic in tone. DxO PureRaw 3 is much better for portraits. However, I'd like your take on it.
Hi Anthony, I tried this new denoise feature on my various fujifilm raw files. I don't know how but it fixes worm and sharpening problems immediately. It's crazy good.
I really like the results from this Denoise. Looks like you can't use Denoise and super resolution. They both only work on RAW files and convert to DNG.
Thanks, for tis great information. We can always count on you to explain new features from updates very quickly. A couple of notes. 100% on the Denise setting looks very plastic to me. In future videos maybe you can demonstatrate using different values. Also, a comparison of Lightroom's new Denise vs Topaz DeNoise would be interesting.
Thank you so much. I had no idea that that was now part of Lightroom. I will be trying that tonight when I get home. That is awesome. They’re definitely moving in the right direction. Hopefully there is not too many more bugs. Introduced. They have promised they’re going to be fixing a lot of their bugs.
Thank you for another great video. FYI the Denoise in latest release of Lightroom Classic locked-up and then crashed my 2015 MacBook Pro with 16gig of RAM. Maybe it's time to upgrade, or wait for another Classic release with bug fixes.
Denoise AI function opens at 50% by default on my Mac. Looks good. It's nice to have the current range of options without bouncing in and out of say, DXO Photolab.
I did compared 1 of my nightscape images with high iso 6400 . DXO vs Lr AI deniose The Lr created some artifacts line on my photo but DXO had none. So I still prefer to use DXO all day long. I just don't tick Camera module and lens collection as the sharpening process of it is way over the top and its len collection does not work well when the later post process takes place. However, I would not make this a conclusion, I will try to experiment this when I have new photos as they might give the different result photo by photo.
Where in the workflow do you recommend running denoise, before or after edits? Also, what about the sharpening options? Is it better to set sharpening sliders to 0 then run Denoise, or sharpen first?
Great stuff. Thanks for showing us how to use it. I’ve been hoping this feature would come out. Maybe on their way to catching up to the other AI add-ons out there.
Always a pleasure to learn from the master, Anthony. When do you think Adobe will give Lightroom the great remove objects feature that they have recently given Photoshop?
Another clear, concise, and helpful video. I do have one question, which would seem to be a natural follow up issue. How does this new AI based noise reduction in LrC compare to Topaz DeNoise when used as a LrC plugin?
Thanks for the video. I tried using Denoise (Z9 user) and found little to no change from the original file. I find Topaz Denoise much better and quicker. I had really hoped this would be an option from what I have seen it isn't.
Thanks for the video. Re masking, if they can add facial hair and clothes I would love to see an option for birds where there was say, beak, legs, eye, and maybe split body and wings. 🤞🏻
I don't know if I was doing something wrong, but using the default settings LR Denoise took about 40 minutes to render a DNG file. I think my problem is my graphics card, which up until now has worked well in handling RAW files in LR. I've had no trouble with Topaz Denoise, but the LR version seems memory hungry.
Great video Anthony. Tried it this morning with Sony A1 raw files. The new Denoise feature SUCKED….. Took almost 5 minutes to render. Your right Topaz DN is way better, faster and more options. Can’t believe Sony got thrown under the bus here….. OK, that’s my 2 cents…..
Recently updated LR to current version. On trying the new Denoise, I found it to be exceptionally slow 27 minutes. My PC is OK in specification apart from a video card that LR does not like, claiming its drivers are out of date. Nvidea GEforce GT 440
Thanks for heads up about the update , I literally finished editing an event with a lot of low light shots that are ok but some are high iso grainy . Going to play with the AI now & see if that’s better than the fiddling I did to improve them !
So it’s ok, about 30% was acceptable for faces , but interestingly it removed something , someone had a blue jacket that has black stripes with narrower red stripes on either side … like a red border on each . The red was deleted by the AI . So take care with detail . It’s also not as fast as other LR functions . I have a new M2 max with high specs & still takes a while to do it. Other things like export or import are blindingly fast, it’s a good start but I’d expect some updates
I am just trying out this feature. Two things I have noted is it is slower than Topaz Denoise and the DNG files created are huge, 220 Mb in my case - three times the size of the original Sony RAW files.
The DNG produces a Linear Raw file. That is each pixel is assigned 3 colors (RGB) instead of 1 in a regular RAW file Thus more data must be included. Also if the file out your camera was compressed , that will also be a factor
Are these changes (Denoise and Super resolution) only in Light Room Classic or are they also in Light Room (Lr)? Thanks for all your work making these videos Anthony! Learning so much!!
This comes just a few days before the end of my DxO trial period. Woohoo!! The fact that the new dng shows up in the library is almost enough to not worry if it's not quite as good as DxO, workflow is really important. I hope I can do multiple images in a batch though. Nice changes on the masking too. I just started to update my Lightroom when I saw the video, and it's having trouble updating, for the first time ever, at 97%. Uh-oh...
Thank god they added clothes mask. My workaround would be to make a Subject mask, then Subtract the person (select all, face, skin, eyes etc) and then tidy up with a brush some of those areas it left behind lol, too much work! (a simple brush would have been easier 😆). Question. Can you use features like Enhance and Denoise together? Or is Denoise already Enhancing as well?
When you're working on a Raw file that Denoise is compatible with, Enhance is automatically applied during the Denoise process. When you try it out, you'll see that Enhance is grayed out but checked when doing Denoise.
Thanks for the video. I used Denoise on a recent theatre photo shoot and it works well. The images are cleaner. However, I can't work out to export the DNG file and use the file's original file number. When I exported the images as JPGs for submission to the client I could only export them with 'custom file name' - which I usually do - and a sequence of numbers beginning with '1', not the original file number. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.
Hey Anthony as usual a great video! Anthony my problem with the new AI Noise Reduction is that on the average it is taking over 30 minutes to process. Do you have any ideas??
May not be indicative, but just processed an image in Topaz Photo AI and it did a great job in about 2 minutes. Lightroom enhance denoise took 21 minutes for the exact same image. I think I'll stay with Topaz Photo AI.
I like the option to add the denoised dng to a stack with the original. I’m just finding after a couple years of DxO PureRAW use that my file organization hasn’t been great, I’ve been shuffling originals in to a separate catch all folder and only organizing the dngs. Creating stacks is probably best practice, or at least closer to best practice than what I was doing
I got away from using Stacks and only now, just started doing it again and I agree, having all these extra files isn't the best thing but Stacks definitely helps.
Have you seen this issue: initiating 'Enhance' when LRc is first opened took over 12 min to get the program open and preview pane showing. This happens only when LRc is opened and each subsequent photo works OK. If LRc is closed....start all over again!! 12 min. (Long time subscriber; you are my most valuable resource.)
Good interaction with Adobe today: guided me to Intel ARC control for driver update. My PC is only 1 year old but needed graphic card update. Lesson: update, update, update. My denoise software is now awesome!
Hi Anthony - thank you for this and all the other nice videos. Very nice to see LR adding this feature to compete with other AI powered software. One question about this video. After Lightroom creates a new DNG file, am I able to convert this into standard .jpg file during export?
Thank you for your tutorial. I find the update slows my LR program way down. Sometimes the screen goes dark and the curser spins for 30 t040 seconds. When I send photos to PS it takes forever and the transition back to LR PS does not close. I am on Windows 10 and very disappointed in the update.
When using the AI masks (face, hair, clothes…) is there a way to adjust the edges softness? For me, these masks don‘t really work because of this. Great to have tone curves now and the AI denoise looks amazing 👍
Thank you for the video! The denoising is clearly better than before, but it is just as clearly worse than denoising with DXO Photolabs Elite or Pure Raw 3.
That's a helpful addition to LR Classic. Maybe if they add the sharpening option to the denoise, it will be great. I might still use Topaz DeNoise because of it's different modes and options to sharpen or masking on image.
Denoise AI failed to work on my machine. Seems to process the image OK but simply takes forever to generate the DNG processed image. Whilst my PC is not new is still has a reasonable spec and Topaz plugins function fine. Raw images were from a Nikon D7100.
I wonder how they got around using the term/name "Denoise" unless Topaz registered (specifically) "DeNoise AI" and not just "Denoise" as a trademarked name...? I mean you have other "de-nosing" programs but they are called something else (like PureRAW or NoNoise). That being said, and I"m not complaining necessarily ,but with these new AI features, I will finally have to build a new computer I guess (since the currently LR is pretty taxing on my 5-year old desktop it seems) at least when working on 45MP images... The good news for users is that most cameras uses Bayer sensors so that limitation is not likely to be a huge issue (except mobile phone or tablet users which was pointed out) but even Fuji files are supported which is good. I am impressed at how well it works, but people do need to realize that these AI functions do utilize the GPu more, so you will likely want a dedicated graphics card now for Lightroom if you plan to use the AI features often, as CPU graphics will struggle it seems (took my Ryzen 5600G which is a 6-core with CPU graphics, about 7 minutes to do a 45MP image).
I was wondering the exact same thing. When I saw the word “Denoise” my first reaction was “What, they acquired Topaz Denoise?”, but of course not. I wonder how Topaz labs will react to this.
Your example estimated rendering in 15sec in your example. I don’t have the latest greatest hardware, so my images take 45-MINUTES! What are the system requirements for practical rendering times of denoised images?
Just installed 12.3 and now when I go to edit in photoshop it is greyed out. I reset photoshop and lightroom preferences but that didn't work. Went to file handling in preferences and the photoshop version box is empty. Suggestions? Using razer laptop and windows. Graphics card RTX 3080ti. Also when using denoise it replaces the raw file, how can I keep the original raw file. Using Sony A1 Quote ReplyReport Upvote 0
I also have noted that my A1 files get replaced with the Denoise DNG file. My work around is to perform Denoise on a virtual copy. So far that has worked.
@@stevelong141 I had to reinstall Photoshop first, then reinstall Lightroom and then all was good. Make sure you save your preferences when asked so you programs look and feel the same. I also found that if you go to the dng image in lightroom and hover over it you will see the number 2 on the file, it didn't replace the file it made another copy and you can the original if you click the number 2.
In the Sony "blue hour" image, is it just my imagination or did the sky directly adjacent to the roof look different (other than the lack of noise) when compared to the original.
When I first downloaded the update this morning I went straight to your channel looking for a video and this was not there at that point ! The denoise works with my Sony A9 and A74 files but not the A7R5! Very frustrating. And I wish they had produced a list of compatible cameras as I’ve no idea what a Bayer sensor is, don’t recall and gear reviewers making a point of comment on this? The extra selection for people is nice but the list is so long I now have to scroll down to get to the create mask button. I wish you could turn off ones you don’t want. I’m currently editing 10,000 odd images from a kids dance show there are no beards! What I was hoping to see as an update was the ability to select multiple people in masking from the start not have to choose one and then Go back and add others. Hopefully they have fixed the bug where I have a group of 10 kids and it says no people detected…
Thank you Anthony for a great tutorial. I seem to be the only one in the whole world who quit after more than an hour waiting for it to work! I wonder if it has to do with my equipment. I shoot only in RAW with the latest Olympus OM1 camera. Import into Lightroom and if my Denoise button is not blacked out, I have tried a few times and after an hour gave up. I use a MacBook Pro, late 2013 15 inch. Processor 2,3 GHz Quad core. intel core 17. Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR 3. Mac HD. Graphics NVIDIA Geforce GT 750m 2 GB. Camera matching profile in order. Please can you put me out of my misery ):
Thank you. Denoise is not available in all file formats. But worst than this, is that denoise is not available in photos converted to dng with lossy compression... That is a huge limitation, because till now, i used to convert almost every photos with this option, as it saves a lot a space (2/3 aprox) with no visible effects or limitations. Till now...
I have a three year old MacBook Pro which I bought specifically to work with Lightroom Classic. I installed the 12.3 Lightroom and discovered that the select people function does not work because I have insufficient computing power. Apparently you need 2 gb of vram to run it. I don't have that. I am not a computer person but the computer has 32 gigs of ram and a very modern processor. All to no avail. The select people function works with 12.0 but without all of the new features of 12.3. I think Denoise works but it requires uninstalling 12.0 and installing 12.3 and reversing the process to use select people in 12.0. A $2700 computer is being rendered useless for future versions of Lightroom Classic. This is not a unique problem to me as I researched the issue in google. Both Adobe and Apple said tough. I should have bought a pc to have the ability to update the video card and avoid Apple's business model of built in obsolescence..
Why release it when it will not work with jpgs? I tried it on a Nikon Z7 raw file - extremely slow to render - 3 minutes. Adobe well behind the field again. I will stick with Topaz Denoise.
What would be your recommendation for workflow? Early or later in the post processing workflow? Thanks for years of fantastic education, I would not be where I am now with my photography and processing if it weren't for your videos. Cheers.
Messing around with it, it doesn't seem to matter. I suspect when you Denoise an image, it ignores any Lightroom adjustments that were done and references the unadulterated Raw file to calculate the noise reduction then, when the new DNG file is created, it overlays the Lightroom adjustments you did on top of that new DNG file.
Hi Anthony. I tried the Ai Noise reduction in Lightroom today. I have a question... some Canon Cr2 files (taken with Canon 7D Mark 2) can be cleaned easily but is some files it says the file is not compatible? all are taken with the same camera. Can it be something to do with my settings?
I find that the mandatory file renaming disruptive (DSG_1234 becomes DSG_1234-enanced-NR) I use automatic renaming on export so that the previous file name becomes "230421-description-1234.jpg". The automatic rename function no longer works with the renamed file. I cant find any option in the preferences section on how to change this rename behavior. Any suggestions how to overcome this?
I understand that you can't "convert" JPEG to Raw pe se for all the obvious reasons. Is there a way to change the extension on a photo to where is can be read by the new format?
I'm not sure why but when I go in to use it, it always says, "Denoise is not compatible with this photo format". Very odd. I change all of of my Fuji RAW files into DNG files and import those into LR so not sure why they are not compatible. :-).
Yeah, I'm EXTREMELY disappointed with this because I automatically convert to DNG when importing and most are not able to use the Denoise function. I want my $$$ back! ;-)
@@frand6822 Very strange starting point from Adobe, since Adobe invented the DNG file format. But apparently, the range of file formats to be compatible will be expanded. So hopefully your images will be supported in a little while.
As always, great video. One question : oploading your photos without converting to dng? Hope it will handle jpeg soon. When using my X100V I have to shoot raw also in bad lighting conditions. So no more SOOC 😏 For the R6 it will be nice.
In this tutorial, I demonstrate the new features added to the latest version of Lightroom Classic, version 12.3.

Thanks for tis information
Ik takes 3 minutes ! for the noise to be removed from my raw file, but I am satisfied with the result.
Great to hear!
Thank you for another great video. I always learn so much from you
You are a super sleuth when it comes to finding these Adobe gems. Thanks!
That's very kind of you Mike. Thanks!
Would love a comparison between LR AI denoise and latest DXO!
I did some tests iso 10000, 1/250 s, f/5.6 and lightroom is behind Photo AI either as a plugin or as a stand alone.
Thank you for the video! The denoising is clearly better than before, but it is just as clearly worse than denoising with DXO Photolabs Elite or Pure Raw 3.
Thanks for watching!
That's a helpful addition to LR Classic. Maybe if they add the sharpening option to the denoise, it will be great. I might still use Topaz DeNoise because of it's different modes and options to sharpen or masking on image.
I'm sure it will be improved and other features added as time goes on. Thank you for watching!
yes, Adobe is always late to the party, but they will eventually get there. So, if you are patient, you don't need to buy any plug-ins!
@@gosman949 You'd think they'd come up with a new name, though, instead of copying Topaz's
@@garyrowe58 a lawsuit may be in the making.
@@gosman949 yes, it certainly seems a rather dumb move by them!
Denoise AI failed to work on my machine. Seems to process the image OK but simply takes forever to generate the DNG processed image. Whilst my PC is not new is still has a reasonable spec and Topaz plugins function fine. Raw images were from a Nikon D7100.
What specs is the PC
Thanks for the updated !
Denoise works brilliantly on shots taken with my D5300... sadly not on my DJI Mini 2 (yet).
I have a old'ish PC with 32GB Ram but it takes a lot to power the denoise in Adobe so will carry on using the Topaz Denoise software.
Thank you for watching!
I have a windows Core i5 2.90 GHz machine, purchased a couple years ago. Denoise takes around 17 minutes.
Hi
My photos not compatible with the new lightroom denoise shooting from a7iv.
Not work
I already had Topaz DeNoise, and while it is slow, the new LR NR is truly sluggish. Not getting rid of DeNoise any time soon.
Using Sony A1

Thanks for this video. I have a Canon R7. Will I be able to see if denoise works by simply trying it?
Can I open the new denoise feature in Lightroom and apply it as a batch to dozens or hundreds of photos at once?
Just worked with my A7R5 files. Didn't work with a TIFF file. That's the only file I got the message. Only Raw files will work.
Would love to see the denoise tool used on a milk way shot to see if it preserves the stars correctly
Why release it when it will not work with jpgs? I tried it on a Nikon Z7 raw file - extremely slow to render - 3 minutes. Adobe well behind the field again. I will stick with Topaz Denoise.
Dee-noise. The prefix De-, meaning removing something. As in Decolorize, Detoxify, Declutter, Denoise, etc.
Anthony, you might do a video to clear this up. Your w park flow has been to Denoise first
I definitely plan on it Rich and thanks for watching!
@@AnthonyMorganti thanks very much 🙂
julienne Kost has a video about this and she recommends doing denoise early in the editing and she explains why, it's a good video to watch as well.
Anthony, in your next episode, can you kindly show us how to upgrade the Lightroom classic to 12.3?
Hi Anthony. I tried the Ai Noise reduction in Lightroom today. I have a question... some Canon Cr2 files (taken with Canon 7D Mark 2) can be cleaned easily but is some files it says the file is not compatible? all are taken with the same camera.
Can it be something to do with my settings?
What about Lightroom not the classic I believe it got the same plus more new functionality. Or
I find that the mandatory file renaming disruptive (DSG_1234 becomes DSG_1234-enanced-NR) I use automatic renaming on export so that the previous file name becomes "230421-description-1234.jpg".
It doesn't work on any DNG files. Only the original Raw .RAF files.
@@AnthonyMorganti Thank you for the clarity on that! Certainly explains my issue!
AI Denoise pretty good. I shoot in very dark bars, sometimes at ISO 102400, and its making some smooth pics.
😮
Hi Anthony, do you ever see a time when Lightroom masking will include ALL of the adjustments available in the main editing mode, eg HSL?
As always, great video. One question : oploading your photos without converting to dng?
Hope it will handle jpeg soon. When using my X100V I have to shoot raw also in bad lighting conditions. So no more SOOC 😏 For the R6 it will be nice.
It will not work on DNG files. Only the original Raw. At least for now. They said that will change with future updates.
