I am receiving my D3300 today. I am a first timer in the DSLR realm. Your videos are fantastic for first timers! Thank you for posting such educational videos for us newbies.
Here are the shortcuts to adjusting ISO, Shutter Speed, and aperture (f-stop): 1. Set Mode dial to M 2. To adjust Shutter speed, use the command dial 3. To adjust aperture (f-stop), press button to the right of the on/off switch and roll the command dial simultaneously 4. To adjust ISO, press the Fn button on the left side of the camera and roll the command dial simultaneously
Thank you so much for posting this video, i have had my camera for about a year now and i want to move on from the Auto setting, and your tutorial has given me the confidence to go and explore the wonderful world of photography.
Thanks for putting this out there publicly to teach how to use the camera. I learned a lot and I've had my camera for awhile. Being visual, this was a lot easier to learn from.
Very informative, bought this camera for my girlfriend and she loves it! You have taught me a lot! I appreciate it. I don't understand how people dislike videos that teach people how to do something, especially when the quality is great. Awesome job!
Tom, your videos are absolutely amazing. I am thinking of getting the Nikon D3300 for some basic photography, and I've been watching your videos before deciding to purchase it, and I have learnt A LOT thanks to your videos. Keep it up!
thank you so much for these videos. my d3300 is on it's way to my house I'm so excited! you should make more videos of taking this camera out and demonstrate using it in different settings and environment
Thank you so much for these videos. As a beginner, they have helped tremendously. I still have difficulty taking quality shots of birds while perching on a wire. They are typically against a bright sky and the bird comes out too dark. Do you have any suggestions on camera settings for the D3300?
Hello Tom. I am a Nikon F2 film SLR user and I am planning to buy a Nikon D3300, thanks for your videos, they are so useful for me. I have some old Nikkor "Non-Ai" and "Ai" lenses, they are manual focus lenses, I woder if this D3300 able to fit with these lenses without an extra lens adapter? If they can fit together, should I need to use only M mode to operate with the old manual focus lenses ?
Hello guys i bought my Nikon D3300 like 5 years ago and i found out a malfunction made my mode selector break in half, does some of y'all know a way to fix this without buying a new one or having to pays more than 200 bucks
hey there buddy, are you able to take Black And White images? sorry if this is a silly question, this D3300 will be my first camera and i'm totally new to photography.
Yes, but I wouldnt do it in camera. Take them in colour and convert on a computer. Computer will give much better detail and contrast, plus you have a colour copy if you want it.
Hey tom. Can you check out my most recent videos last 3 I have used the Nikon D3300. Do you think im not using enough lighting? the videos seem a bit grainy and no where as clear as what it should be shooting as. any tips?
you were one of my fav youtubers in respect to dslr tutorials and I remember back when I bought my first D3100 and watched all your tutorials and you had hundred of thousands of views..I'm sorry you now have only 4 views, but that's what happens when you stop posting videos for very long periods of time
My go to macro is the sigma 150mm f/2.8 OS. The longer focal length makes it much easier to get decent insect and flower shots without external lighting. It’s quite heavy, but the quality is excellent. Other than that, the sigma 105mm or the tamron 90mm on the budget end. I’ve owned the Nikon 105vr and whilst it’s very good, it’s not worth double the amount of the sigmas in my opinion, so it’s hard to recommend when you can get something just as good for a lot less money.
+Paul Garwood It might be ok, but you'd be much better off using shutter priority and setting it yourself. Also the focus is very important and I doubt the auto modes will be very good at figuring out what you are trying to focus on.
Hi... I just bought a Nikon D3300 a couple of months a ago and it works perfectly...but because of a busy schedule I didn't use it for a while. Problem is when I start to use it yesterday and try to connect it on my Mac....it wont allow me to use LIVE and Playback feature. Please help.
I think you have to use it at least once every three weeks so it doesn't 'damage' itself. It's like a Bose speaker, you have to use it at least once every three weeks so the battery doesn't get damaged
I was wondering if there is a way to pause a movie while recording and un-pause it and still be on the same movie. I can't seem to figure it out. If you could possibly help me, that would be wonderful
Help!!! Can I revert photos taken in EFFECTS mode? My sister used my Nikon D3300 to take pictures at my nephew's birthday party, but she accidentally set the camera in EFFECTS mode, and all the photos were taken in B/W.
If you were shooting in Raw plus JPG then you will still have the Raw (NEF) file to process on your computer. This will be full details in colour as recorded by the sensor. If you had only JPG then sadly you've probably only got the B&W image file. Have you tried placing the memory card in a card reader to see what image files were saved?
+Andeedom12 Which ever you prefer. Both achieve the same thing in the end. In Aperture, you set the aperture you want and the camera selects the shutter speed, which you either agree with and keep, or adjust using exposure compensation. In manual, you select the aperture and the shutter speed you consider correct. If you just line up the exposure meter to what the camera thinks is correct, then you may as well just use aperture priority and save yourself an extra step.
+Eric on RUclips yes, I probably meant wider.. Larger can be taken two ways.. larger as in bigger hole (less DOF) or larger as in higher number(more DOF). Sometimes I say one or the other, which can be confusing.
+Oli Selby I know it well :) very nice Cathedral you have! Also love Glastonbury town. Used to visit there a lot, also used to go to Street and Clarks Village shopping centre a lot.
thankyou for your reply Tom, but for a beginner who doesn't know how to work all the settings of the camera, wouldn't it be difficult for them to shoot the video on manual mode? would auto do the job?
Auto will do a reasonable job yes, but in manual you can control the aperture and get slightly better looking videos. Generally your shutter speed wants to be double your frame rate, so if shooting at 30fps your shutter speed wants to be 1/60. Then set your aperture to whatever you want and adjust the ISO to get a good looking exposure
7 years later still a great video teaching me how to use my first camera!
Thank you, being dyslexic I can find user manuals overwhelming. My husband bought my D3300 for my birthday and now I can't wait to get started.
This is the best D3300 tutorial. You explain so simply and well. Thanks for having taken your time to do this.

Layput that is literally the only reason I clicked this video. Lifesaver
Thanks - it took me 2 hours of playing with the camera to finally out how to manually adjust the ISO - you have now confirmed my discovery!
ISO doesn't lock in. Goes to whatever it wants to.
@@jamesmiddleton5304 then you have auto iso turned on.
@@TomPhotoixThanks. Yeah I figured that out but couldn't find my comment here to delete it..

+Brandon Stack Thanks! They do it because their penis is too small usually.
It's true, I saw the penis of someone who didn't like this video. I was not impressed with size, girth wasn't bad however.
@@TomPhotoix hahaha, Thx For Your Video tho

Hey! I’m planning to buy a budget entry level DSLR. So which is better- Nikon D3200, D3300, D5100 or some other Nikon or Cannon DSLR? Btw great video!
Great tutorial! Thank you. 😊
Good presentation. Thanks helping to clarify and enhance operation.

open the aperture on mountain to get more depth of field, won't that lower the depth of field?
Thank you very much 👍
can you tell me which lens should I buy with this camera for nice videos. otherwise it was a nice and helpful video

Top video , really helpful
Thank you so so much 😊🙌🥰
this was a really helpful video, thanks!
also, are you by any chance ricky gervais?
If was Ricky Gervais I wouldn't be making shitty quality youtube videos :) And he is from Reading and I am not.

Would a really fast shutter speed compensate for slightly moving hands?
+xbeanx3000 yes of course.
Excellent!
Enjoyed this video many thanks
Great video! One question, in the portrait and landscape modes, does the camera adjust ISO etc? Thanks.
Alex Reilly Only if you have auto ISO set, otherwise it will use whatever its set on and stick with it.

What type of macro lens do you suggest? I'm looking for the biggest bang for a buck.

Awesome video😉
Hi Tom,
How do I adjust Exposure indicator? Even though I followed the instruction.
The exposure meter changes by itself when you adjust either the ISO, aperture or shutter speed. What exactly are you trying to do?
Hi... I just bought a Nikon D3300 a couple of months a ago and it works perfectly...but because of a busy schedule I didn't use it for a while. Problem is when I start to use it yesterday and try to connect it on my Mac....it wont allow me to use LIVE and Playback feature. Please help.
+Beck Barbosa No idea Im afraid.
I think you have to use it at least once every three weeks so it doesn't 'damage' itself. It's like a Bose speaker, you have to use it at least once every three weeks so the battery doesn't get damaged
My cameras frequently go months without use, and still work fine, so Im not sure its because of that. Thesis much more likely a software issue.
Thanks for sharing!
How do you select what color stands out in the selective color effect mode?
I was wondering if there is a way to pause a movie while recording and un-pause it and still be on the same movie. I can't seem to figure it out. If you could possibly help me, that would be wonderful
+NandA2113 :D In short, No. You can only fully stop the recording and start a new one.
dang it. Ok Thanks *****
it really helped !!
thank you!!

Gives me more confidence to try manual mode. Find that the manual does not explain a whole lot.
which budget dslr want buy 20000 to 30000
When shooting portraits is it best to use manual mode or Aperture priority? Since I would want the background to be blurred with a wide aperture
+Andeedom12 Which ever you prefer. Both achieve the same thing in the end. If you don'tike his nails, watch another video. RUDE!
My camera pop up flash light very often when I try to take shots. What's wrong with it?
me to
+marina bonello now I now why. it is because of the auto mode. camera decides tot pop up the flash light when it is dark for it.
+All in One yep, correct.
3:50. Wouldn't a larger aperture reduce Depth of Field?
+Eric on RUclips yes, I probably meant wider.. Larger can be taken two ways.. larger as in bigger hole (less DOF) or larger as in higher number(more DOF). Sometimes I say one or the other, which can be confusing.
i was kinda sad you didnt go into advanced operation in the guide mode but ohh well
+Simonarne Myklebust there is no need really, it tells you in the camera everything you need to know. Just do it yourself and follow what it says.
Are you from Bristol??
My familly are yes. I was born in Bath. Far posher :D
I live in Wells near Glastonbury!
+Oli Selby I know it well :) very nice Cathedral you have! Also love Glastonbury town. Used to visit there a lot, also used to go to Street and Clarks Village shopping centre a lot.
thanks, awesome
Why have you stopped makeing video
Time, money, motivation...
Thanks a lot
what's that metal part on top of the camera?
+BigJock0 hot shoe for an external flash gun.
Thank you
Does 3300 have long exposure?
+Antónia Kenderešová yes, up-to 30 second exposure setting, or bulb mode for any length exposure.
Tom Photoix thank you so much for answer😊
awesomeeee bet!
helpful
Why the Nikon store doesnt have this camera
Because it’s been replaced by the d3400.
can you take videos with these modes?
+Migdad Hi yes, any mode will shoot video, but you won't have any control over the settings at all, it's much better to shoot video in manual mode.
thankyou for your reply Tom, but for a beginner who doesn't know how to work all the settings of the camera, wouldn't it be difficult for them to shoot the video on manual mode? would auto do the job?

Pro tip when just getting into photography/picking up your first DSLR: get out of Auto as soon as you can. You won't learn anything from it
