      I was planning to do so. His other problem is the story. I've stated that it is a reboot, thus allowing the individual to accept one or both, however one feels about it.

    • @untapped8776
      @untapped8776 9 лет назад +5

      That American Narrator What I find interesting about the story is how it feels like it's a story being retold. Sure, it's not as epic and amazing and detailed as others may wish it to be, but this way it feels like a legend, a tale to easily be told and shared with others.

    I had the green Rahkshi as a kid because I just saw a commercial one day and thought it looked cool, but outside of that I have no working knowledge of Bionicle (or Lego or toys in general). Yet not only did you keep me transfixed throughout the full length of this video, but now you've got me planning on getting a Lego-loving younger cousin of mine Gali this Christmas. My friend, you have a gift.

    I gotta say Nick, these reviews helped me get into gen 2. Somebody needs to show this to close-minded jerks like Trimondius.

    • @mphylo2296
      @mphylo2296 8 лет назад +1

      Trimondius is a dick with sub-par mocs whose only talent is his ability to flame-hate anything that wasn't a part of his childhood. In his mind, If it wasn't around in his days as a 10 year old boy with high functioning autism, it isn't a quality set. Honestly these 2015 Toa are so much better than any of the Toa from Gen 1.

      Funny thing is, I was a ten year old boy with high functioning autism at the time the original line was released, too. So that doesn't really play into this, much. It's something else.

    I was shocked walking in a store and seeing Bionicle return. I LOVED Bionicle through my high school years (Onua was the first one I got) and I was sad that it seemed to sort of fade. When it came back, i wasn't thrilled about the character designs...that is, until I saw this video. Now the high schooler in me wants to start collecting them again. Thank you for your insight and for reaffirming why i loved this series :)

  • @HubPie3

    That AFOL speech was beautiful. :)
    As for the Toa, I adore these sets, mostly because they feel like an evolution of Hero Factory, by having more detail and personality to the figures, with Kopaka being my favorite. If we get sets as good if not better than these in the future, Bionicle's future will be brighter than ever. :)

    I’m still watching Nick’s videos even years later, in this case 6 years. I will always love Bionicle, and with Bionicle Day coming tomorrow, 8/10 (810nicle), now is a great time to reminisce. Thanks for all these different videos you made, Nick. Not just Bionicle but all of your Lego videos are excellent. As much as I love Lego Star Wars and Star Wars in general, Bionicle will always be my favorite Lego line. Excuse the nostalgia for a moment, but I have such fond, lovely memories thanks to Bionicle that may never be replicated. I will always be grateful for that magic that Bionicle brought into my life.

  • @Ralloris

    I think Nokama's mask looks more feminine than the original Gali mask solely because it's so rounded. The lack of really definitive and sudden edges gives it a softer and warmer feeling than the others. It's still a mask, but there can be non-misogynistic ways to make her mask look more feminine. Her body looks way more feminine than any past toa though.

  • @Nailfut

    Gosh, it was like listening to myself! I agree with every single word (boy, even with your points about Toa Metru: those have been my favourites for many reasons like the story and the balance between gears and poseability). To me the new Bionicles are the best thing Lego could have ever done and, as a true fan, I'm proud of the end result. I haven't built anything like Onua since 2009 and no design had ever amazed me until I built Gali but, above all, it's been awhile since I built characters, not action figures, not "toys", but actual characters and that's what makes Bionicle different from any other thing! I could feel all their powers, all their personalities while building them and I have the same feels everytime I pick up one of them. Perfect review/overview, I'm happy to see there's someone like you out there (sorry if I wrote something wrong, but I'm a 17 Italian student, so I'm still practising my English).

    Nick, you have made some of the most detailed and understandable points on both pro's and con's of the toa sets as not only toy sets, but also as characters, and that makes this review mean more to listen to, than the other reviews I've seen on youtube. Before I've seen this video, my younger brother and I went to Target to buy some of the new sets, and came home with Tahu, Kopaka, the protecters of fire, ice stone, and earth. So far we've enjoyed what they had to offer.

    You've perfectly summed up my rather disparate feelings on the new Bionicle. These new sets just have so much more flavor than the classic sets, while having a much more unified aesthetic. It's rather amazing what Lego accomplished with the new line.

  • @TransformersFanCo328
    @TransformersFanCo328 9 лет назад +3

    Great video! I was already fine with CCBS since I did find some of the Hero Factory villain sets rather cool looking, but you really explained why this system really works, especially with the new Bionicle sets. I admit that it took a LONG while for these new designs to grow on me, but I only have Tahu so far and I love him. He's the perfect blend of nostalgic throwback and modern engineering that made me happier with a LEGO set than I have in years. Probably with the 2007 Bionicle Titans before the plastic quality went downhill. (I'm real careful with my Glatorian Mata Nui, though his arms didn't last)
    I never had any of my old Mata, Nuva, or Metru Toas survive my childhood intact or with all the parts needed to rebuild them. At best, I could make a patchwork Inika. I loved those sets growing up, but now I see their problems and respect the updates this new Character and Creature Building System provides these new Toa with. I'm very interested in what they're going to do with this in the future.

    Looking back at this video, Lewa's 2015 design reminds me quite allot of Fallout 4's Power Armors. As you basically said, the way the chest of the armor and his mask look, it makes it feel like he's a more slim dude controlling a larger, bulkier tank-like exosuit of a body.

    You made a point that made me realize something about G2 of bionicle, I did not enjoy the new story as much as the new character design, but that's just it the new story was made for the new generation, with this perspective in mind I understand now what Lego was trying to do.

  • @Maniac4Bricks
    @Maniac4Bricks Год назад +1

    It's amazing how most of this rings true even to this day. I've rebuilt G2 entirely over the past year or so, and I'm still impressed by what CCBS can offer, and how Technic these figures can be without resembling a standard Technic set - and I've owned these since 2015! Even other lines with figures like Chewbacca opened my eyes to complexity in a normally standard release, to get specific shapes and details of figures distinguishable from each other. And I enjoyed the gearbox so much, I bought a second copy of Ekimu & Skull Grinder, parted it out, and built one of my best Bionicle MOCs to date with that frame in mind, with a figure who can hold his pose for the most part.
    Thank you for this thorough review, even down to the chest plate patterns.

  • @GeorgeB435
    @GeorgeB435 9 лет назад +4

    Well said, Nick. Well said.
    Even though I've already got all the Toa and pretty much love all of them for similar reasons to what you mentioned (e.g. colours, weapons, designs), this video makes me appreciate the Toa of Okoto even more. This video greatly points out on what makes these Toa stand out as not just Bionicle or CCBS figures, but as figures on their own right.
    I also loved hearing your thoughts and response on the AFOLs reactions of 'Bionicle Gen II' being "more of the same" or "too simple" or whatever cheap assumptions they said. Looking back over the last decade, I see Lego's line of constraction sets as an evolution chart and witnessing how far these sets have grown in not just complexity, but in finding the perfect balance of form and function. I feel that 'Bionicle Gen II' might just be the beginning of, if not already, the perfect ground of constraction. I can only wish that the designers at Lego will keep this momentum going to built it further.
    Great review, Nick. You've certainly entertained me as a Bionicle fan. I'll try my best to share this review with what few Bionicle fans I know. I'll look forward to hearing your views on LoSS and the new 'combiners'.

    Interestingly enough, in other old lines like Vikings, a lot of Bionicle parts made it in the sets such as the ones with the bigger dragons, and I remember most of the time being Nuva legs pieces and parts that weren't as robotic looking. In a way, the sleeker, almost more organic-looking design of those pieces was good enough to enrich other Lego themes outside of Bionicle. Also, I always enjoy coming back to watch this MEGAreview.

    You told us you weren't asking for likes or subscriptions, but this video was of such high quality, thought and care, I felt far more obligated to, far more convinced to than all other youtubers who ask it every video. I have to thank you, for how cool this video was. I can't say I completely agree with you on all parts, for example I don't feel CCBS is a perfect system and it leaves a lot of gaps, holes, skeletons and overall a less solid look than Bionicle often had before, but overall you presented your opinions so professionally and openly and that is something I very much appreciate!

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple  9 лет назад

      Thank you. I make a point of not asking for those things, because I know how annoying it is when someone asks you to sub to them when you may not even know what kind of content they make. It can easily have a reverse psychology effect and make someone LESS likely to sub, because they'll think that person is kind of shady. Apparently, it does work for some people, but I don't need that because I'm comfortable knowing that everyone who subs to me does so of their own accord, because they, well, actually ENJOYED my stuff and are asking to see more of it. That's what it's all about.
      And as for CCBS... yeah, I don't quite think it's perfect either. I don't think it can ever really be because I feel there's always going to be more that you can do with it. I mean, look at how much they've added to it in the last few years. And now we have gearboxes! Who knows what else they'll whip up in the years to come? And they could always give us new bones an' whatnot that are more compatible with the older pieces we have, down the line. Like I said, who knows? My point what that I feel it's a pretty ideal base to build upon, and not the "problem" some people think it is. Like I said in the video, people used to think G1 Bionicle was a "problem," too.

    Right on the spot, Nick! I used to not like CCBS, but because the new BIONICLE shows how well it can be used, I'm liking it now! I tell you, Nick, you seem to be one of the only people who really can understand and retell the lore of BIONICLE correctly. I congratulate you for making this video. You captured the new 2015 Toa's essence and importance, and you showed successfully why this new BIONICLE is a major step for LEGO sets.
    Thank you for being someone to appreciate the new BIONICLE and show how important it is. We need more people like you in the BIONICLE community. You don't judge because of being biased. You look at the good things of the new BIONICLE.

    I really enjoy this review and I agree with it, I think in many ways this new line improves in areas that older ones lacked (albeit I collected since the Mahri line) so it was refreshing to see that Bionicle is back and better than ever. I’m very late here, but I’ve been watching your videos as of late, and I have to throw my hat in. On the note of “Hero Factory parts,” I have to say I never got angry about that. Even when Bionicle was first on shelves, I just saw them as LEGO pieces, and with all the sets I’ve gotten from Bionicle and other lines I got into thanks to Bionicle, I just thought of LEGO pieces as constantly evolving. New ones came, some stayed, some went. I just saw the new pieces for Bionicle G2 as juts new pieces, and I loved how they all looked different, especially Onua. I loved seeing characters that physically distinct as LEGOs.

    Great video! I remember picking up the original Toa Tahu and Toa Kopaka at a garage sale and from that moment, Bionicle has been the most influential toy product line within my younger life. Now that I'm older, I was worried that the new take on Bionicle wouldn't be as fun building when compared to the older versions. Thanks for showing the detail within these toys! It was what I was hoping for. My only big concern is the new story line. I hope it grows into something as edgy as the the multiple different story lines the older Bionicle presented.

    Y'know i've been looking at Hero Factory for a while when they first introduced the CCBS system and I thought man it would be cool to see Bionicle in this system and I was right c:.
    My only really concern or criticism is really the masks and the way they were attached. I wish I could use the new masks in the old head for moccing but i'm forced to use the new heads. Aside that the rest in the sets are awesome and definently worth for the pieces.
    Can't wait to get these soon as well as this year's line ^^ ( :V it also helped that you know how to sell people on details and quality)

    I usually have a difficult attention to grasp. My brother was surprised that I shared this video with him simply for the sheer length, but you provide a lot of good points for Bionicle.
    That aside, I have Pohatu myself and couldn't help but mod him. If you don't like his shoulders, try raising them and moving the friction gears to wear the spacer on his right arm is. It makes him look beefier without taking away from his waste-lander look and sort of emphasizes his throwing arm thing.

    One thing I really like about the toys is how Gali's mask kind of resembles how she looked in the Mask of Light movie. As I saw the movie first before I owned any of the toys, those were how they looked in my mind, jarring me when I saw how the toys looked. The fact that they made Gali's mask look like her movie version made 5-year-old me cheer.

    While I love these sets, there are some things about them I don't like.
    1. Red pins. I dont mind them being there as long as red is their color scheme, but I find them to be unnecessary when they're shown in sets that dont have red in their color scheme. But I'm okay with it as long as they're completely hidden from the naked eye, otherwise, they're gonna be replaced with black. The only exception, though, are the BIONCILE 2015 summer sets, because I like to think they represent some sort of wired-looking energy that's keeping them "alive." Or maybe it could also represent... no. Don't wanna think about it.
    2. The gearbox. Now, I like the gearbox, as it has a lot of Technic connection points, and very customizable, but the problem with them is that LEGO made them a bit too low (high in Lewa's case.) I like to have the tops of the shoulders match the tops of breast armor pieces to make them more accurate to us humans. Yeah, it does require some, if not a lot of MOCing for the sets, but still, it's something.
    3. The necks. The only thing about the new heads I don't like is that they're too low, and they don't get a lot of rotation (Onua is the only exception), but snap an extender piece on the neck, and that issue is fixed.

    Awesome review!
    But, in HF's defence, they were supposed to be like action figures, with no function and such, except they were BETTER than most action figures, because you could customize them and such. Not to mention how easy it'd be to give them a gearbox.
    Also, why does your Vakama have orange arm bones?:P

    And wow the toa of air were never my favourite despite me growing from the beginning of hero factory, but when these come out he was the only one I could afford at the time and looking back he really meant a lot to me because I liked to imagine all the functions of his design.

    Just watched your video. I realize it’s almost a decade old at this point, but It hit me with a really REALLY hard memory of my Bionicle dream. I grew up in the Phantoka/Mistika era, and Cryoshell was an important part of my childhood. I’m a working adult now, and I just spent 80 bucks on a sealed new Tahu set on eBay. Thank you for reigniting my passion for Bionicle again, and you’re responsible if I go broke 😂😂😂
    Edit: I 100% agree with how versatile these sets are with their MOC-ability. The CCBS parts are awesome for custom stuff, and I’m gonna see if I can get all 6 Toa and make a massive voltron/ megazord monstrosity. The Uniters are a whole different can of worms tho…

    13:23 this is my first time watching this video, and I laughed for a minute about Kopaka having a ski pole. Not that it's a ridiculous idea, more that I feel silly never thinking of that before, very inventive! Up to now I had seen Kopaka's shield alternately used just as snow shoes, which is a little absurd considering how much power he has over ice and snow. Thank you for pointing this out!

    As you were talking about Pohatu and his throwing arm, I thought back on your Nova Orbis story, on how Piras's sword arm suffered an injury and the female ta-matoran(forgot her name, but I know she's a close friend of Calor) made him a special armor for the arm that makes swinging more efficient and less strenuous.
    I'm amazed at how you can identify character traits that were never explained, by how the set itself is designed as a character.

    Another great thing about the new CCBS parts is that they are less sharp and more smooth-edged than the old Bionicle parts were.
    As fun and enjoyable building my very own Bionicle figure was back in the day, I can't deny that it was a fairly physically painful feat trying to assemble and disassemble those sharp pieces with your barehands.
    I still love those stylish retro Bionicle parts though. They are still very in dear to my heart.

    mixing what you and JANG have said, this is the new building system for lego action figures. you can see they have tried and expiramented with the likes of Slizers/Throwbots, Bionicle, and Hero Factory for the Technic and things like knights kingdom for system with the ratcheting bricks to find an a good system. I definately would say the mixing the ball and socket system from HF with the old school gear system was a genius decision and design by lego!

    What I like about the new Kakama is that it's so streamlined. It fits with the original being the mask of speed, so it looks very aerodynamic. The small eye holes look like they're meant to keep coarse desert sand out of his eyes when he run. It also builds the new Po-Wahi, as this suggests it is a barren landscape, with massive sandstorms.

    And that's the way it is.. these are the beinning(edt.)Beginning of the real new era---(--->the , ha, end.. what a pity).. after you mentioned it you know, from what I've seen just here, it IS rather difficult to recall any specific Hero Factory visual hallmark, even just in terms of head... beside's the hat top styled Breeze mask you showed (I think their villains were more memorable)... most all others I saw or remember remind of some historicall epoch like the various takes on the medeival knights or Corinthian style helmets, or even from Bionicle's own of past (the side air intakes or camera lens, like)
    Thanks for sorting out my thoughts about the various build history, these are excellent great work bud

    This video is beautiful. I didn't know until VERY recently that Bionicle was back, so I've been looking for good reviews of it. You make them look better than they do in their own promotional material. And that spiel about the "Hero Factory" parts was amazing. I agree completely. As much as I loved Bionicle way back when, I always wished even back then that the pieces were more versatile in the ways they could be used. I watched these three videos the other day and it made me go to Walmart several hours ago after work. I have Gali and Pohatu now and I'm planning to get at least all of the Toa. Also, I love you for showing me that Bricklink is a thing. I've wanted to re-gain a lot the Bionicle sets that I've lost over the years and now I can.
    By the way, nice use of the Metroid Prime soundtrack. Metroid Prime and Bionicles are my childhood. My favorite game ever and my favorite toy ever. Thanks for making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

    This video was definitely worth it. I was already inspired to buy some of these new sets (and I never owned a CCBS-system set before), but after I watched this video... it made me want to get these sets more.
    I loved the way you explained how these sets are worth buying. They are truly complex for several reasons, and it's unfortunate to see that some people are against the CCBS system for delusional reasons. Thank you for this video. You, JANGBRICKS, RolloutReviews, and more showed how Bionicle has evolved. I'm definitely getting Gali first. :3

      The Gray Kirby CCBS stands for "Charcater and Creature Building System." It's essentially LEGO's universal constraction system. It began with Hero Factory 2.0, so, yes, "Bionicle Pieces" would apply to prior constraction parts.

    What I dislike: The new build system instead the tecnich system.

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple  9 лет назад +12

      +TheAutobotPower I don't think the old system can really be considered technic. At least not in terms of the Toa themselves
      When people hear "technic," they don't think of all the hyper-specialized Bionicle/Throwbot parts used as armor or limbs. They think of gears, beams, things moving around, you know, like the Rahi back in 2001. Aside from the titan and vehicle sets, though, Bionicle sorta dropped that in later years. The most "technical" Bionicle's canister sets ever got in their later years could be using a pin to connect Inika thigh armor to a bone piece. Yeah, real riveting. If anything, these guys have a BIGGER emphasis on technic because of everything going on inside them, more than Bionicle G1 did later on.

    You know I really loved Bionicles back when I was young. But when I looked back I couldn't understand why. I thought hard and with that I know now. It is the fact that these aren't just action figures you can build, it is how they are. They have a good lore that was not complicated to go over kids heads but still interesting enough that it makes you excited when the next ones come out and how it relates to the others. That they are related to a certain element, a weapon that goes with that, a color scheme that makes it clear, a mask which in lore has powers and out are really cool to look at. Of course later in years they sort of fell from that and it made things just so mix match and hard to see what is what anymore. And I will admit that the earlier ones weren't as great as I remembered. They are still good but when I look back I get blinded by nostalgia which clouds judgement. But now YOU sir Nick, your video made me fall in love with Bionicles again. They look so awesome. Not because they have the title "Bionicle" in it. The reboot made me so excited but I keep forgetting about the reboot. Now I have seen your video many times and just drool at them. They are smooth, they look well made, they have the same themes, they still feel like the OG Bionicles but re-imagined, the weapons are good, the extras are okay, and they now tell the story not just by book. Their story is told by the figures themselves, that they aren't just a toy with a story behind it. In some sense, they tell the stories themselves. Anyways long comment aside, the 2016 sets are out now and I am wondering when you will review them again? I mean there only a few sets and not all of them are out yet. But just curious on a rough estimate. Anyways have fun.

    Well said, Nick. Another problem is that the animations that we seen, people are annoyed of how it's kid friendly, I mean c'mon, the animation is meant for the new Bionicle fans and beside, the new Bionicle team are new to this, yet they going to respect the roots of the G1 Bionicle. I think they should grow up from the old Generation and see how Lego work hard of bringing back our beloved series and beside, every toylines, such as Marvel, My Little Pony, Transformers, TMNT, etc are always getting rebooted so it's natural for the marketing. Beside, we all want Bionicle back and Lego did. Beside if Bionicle canceled the second time, then it's going to be our fault for it, so be grateful that we got our beloved series back.
