    While the nostalgia factor of Bionicle is strong, I'm gonna defend the new ones for a specific reason: the quality of the pieces.
    I just got my first CCBS since Tanhok-Kal and that CCBS is General Grievous. Something that the most recent sets do right: the way you can pose them compared to the artwork is possible unlike the original Bionicle (including the Nova series). That Grievous CCBS easily matches up the scale of a Sideshow Figure which is incredible when you think about it.
    Quality over nostalgia for me. I got back into LEGO last year because of the Wheel Bike and the Tumbler. I don't regret it at all.

      Tahnok-Kal is not CCBS though...

      Because they were called "Technic"? ;-) They are still buildable figures. People weren't saying LEGO Technic Bionicle btw... probably not in fact.

      +Alexandre “ScolioReset” Armont yeah character and creature building system is what is also known as "HERO FACTORY PARTS" the old bionicle didnt actualy use technic exept for the very early years but people just calls bionicle parts technic

      +Alexandre “ScolioReset” Armont CCBS was introduced in 2011. Everything before that falls into the Slizer/Roboriders/G1 BIONICLE/HF 1.0 category.

    I remember subscribing to your channel once you just ended your old HF series, and not once have I regretted it. You are one of the best Biotubers, heck probably one of the best Bionicle fans of all time! You are not a fanboy who loves every single Bionicle set put out, and you are also not a hater who hates anything gen 2. You point out what you honestly like and dislike. Keep up the amazing work!

    The idea that Skull Scorpio is a mess of parts Kulta put together when he ran out of parts to make another humanoid figure would'v been a great selling point for Lego I fell, it promotes the idea of creating your own crazy characters and creatures and making them fit into a story no matter how crazy and unique they are.
    I also don't understand why Lego didn't give Skull Scorpio the axle pieces that can be articulated from side to side or up and down depending on their arrangement, it would've given the set so much more articulation while still keeping it's stability.

    I can't stand the people who compare Bionicle Gen 2 to Fant4stic saying it's so bad it is beyond saving. Sure there are things I'd like changed but come on! Bionicle to me didn't really find it's footing until 2004. People are blinded by nostalgia for the early years ignoring their flaws. I really hope Bionicle turns out like Transformers where while it's popularity may waver but it's place in pop culture will forever last (just without Michael Bay). One day when our generation gets to our thirties we'll still be able to share Bionicle with the kids of tomorrow. It just really disturbs me when people say they don't want that and they'd rather have Bionicle died than live on. Honestly it's like Pokémon Gen 3 and Gen 5 where plenty of fans dropped out saying it was doomed to fail only for a new generation of kids to pick it up. I know I'm rambling but in short long live Bionicle!

    I think Bionicle G2 was under-appreciated. I’m glad you calmly spoke your opinion and didn’t “force feed” it to us like other people do.

  • @Nailfut
    @Nailfut 9 лет назад +13

    as always, I agree with you. Thank you for saying those last words.
    While wondering why some people hate G2, I started thinking about what made them make these decisions and I came up with this idea: Bionicle in general has something that other toys could barely imagine, that's what kept us interested on them, but this something maybe wasn't and still isn't the same thing. What made me fall in love with them when I was given my first set, Guurakh, was the great amount of possibilities offered to me as a child. Bionicle to me is "build your own action figure" so that I could be proud of it any time soon (I'm proud of all the sets I built, but they were also sold to everyone else in this planet, however my MOCs were MINE). Moreover I could create any kind of story behind the CHARACTER I was building, in fact I used to (and i still use to this day) modify some aspects of my MOCs to match his past or viceversa. That is the greatest thing Lego could give us, even better than any other sets, because they sold us the instruments to create an entire new world (and being free is very important to a child, being allowed to make your first own decisions, in a smaller, safer ambient) and nowadays only Bionicle has given me this feeling.
    Bionicle isn't complex builds, it isn't complex stories, it's the opportunity to be free with the help of Lego itself, in fact they also gave us a base (the sets sold and their story) to laid the foundations for OUR creations.
    Hero Factory was really good, in set design, but it lacked in giving me ispiration for other MOCs.
    When I built all the G2 Toa I recognized the essence of Bionicle: I was given possibilities (sorry for the repetitions). Furthermore new possibilities were given in the actual sets, that never were in G1, the so called "conflict in a box" elevates G2 to a whole new level, for me at least. With HF I slowly stopped MOCing because I wasn't inspired anymore, but from winter 2014 my mind has created some of my favourite MOCs of all time, for the reasons I wrote before.
    In the end, to me Bionicle has this transcendant something, both G1 and G2 to a greater level, and I couldn't be happier to see them again in store shelves but I also understand that I'm no longer the child Lego is mainly aiming for, so, after appreciating a lot the return of the gearbox, now I really want them to dare and do new, never seen before, things and, from what I saw of the preliminary pictures, I think they're really tring to impress both older and new fans.
    Sorry for this long poem, but is the most sencere and complete I could post, Bionicle was my childhood, to me means really something, I'm an only child, who spent a lot of time in his bedroom alone because I was really shy, but Bionicles were always there to keep me occupied in something and this something was breaking free from my reality, creating my "Utopia" were only my decisions mattered. Thinking about this "gift" by Lego, I couldn't be happier, for me and for all the others who experienced same things like this and I could tear up because of how beatuful this opportunity called Bionicle was, is and, hopefully, will be (that's why I don't like seeing kids playing with phones or tablets).
    (As I wrote you in your review of G2 Toa, sorry if I've made some mistakes, after all I'm an Italian 17 guy who's still learning English)

    Whenever I see Ekimu, either in his smaller or larger form, I always get the image of Optimus Prime in my head. The idea that Ekimu is a figure like Optimus to Okoto's people, and that he gave his life to save it from an evil Okotan (Makuta/Megatron), I see Ekimu as the leader of the Okotans the way Optimus is one to the Autobots

    you know when you said that kids are too different? well early this year, every time I came to toys r us and looked at bionicle's shelves, the amount of sets that are there would get less and less. So I suppose that there are modern kids that find the new bionicle sets interesting :)

    I'll say this: You've got heart. There are not a lot of people out there that have it anymore, or maybe they misplaced it, or never had it, but you are one of the few that do. I'm not even a Bionicle fan! I clicked on this video just because I could, and watched it all the way through to the end because I could feel your enthusiasm for these play things from my seat! Although I still have two questions: Do you have a video for what's behind the meaning of your username, and if not what's the meaning behind it?

      +Saaaaay Fuzzy Pickles! As you've probably guessed, it's a Bionicle thing. Before I joined RUclips, I went by "NickinAmerica," and I wanted something new and cool but with a similar ring to it, so I used Aqua Magna, the planet that the first 8 years of Bionicle G1 took place on.

    aaaah, how nice. Your speech made others remember their own times with bionicle, me included. i had only one friend who was interested in it enough as i was, though i'll admit i had more sets. if i still kept in contact with him i'd know him well enough to know that his favorite toa would be iruini. and im sure he'd know mine. bionicle not only let us had fun but brought us together as cheesy as that sounds.

  • @thefantasyzone7682
    @thefantasyzone7682 9 лет назад +1

    Great review, as always.I've really been looking forward to this one.I have my own two cents to put in about some of them though.You mentioned that Skull Basher's horns can cause his mask to fall off, when I think about it, I always think back to the animated Superman, Doomsday movie, where Doomsday killed a deer by grabbing and pulling his horns.That's the way I imagine Onua would end a fight with Basher:getting a hold on his horns and yanking the to make his mask come off.
    With Skull Grinder being only as tall as tahu, it makes me think that all the other skull villains are almost, but not quite, strong enough to take on the toa on their own.And Kulta is the only one of them who's as strong as a toa.Heck, he seems like he may have even been a corrupted Toa before he died.It just seems like the perfect type of villian for the toa's first big time villian.
    Also, when you mention Skull spiders and masks it got me thinking, what if all the masks were carved from dead Skull spiders?It would kind of make sense, then, that they can control others by latching onto them like masks, because they are living masks.It would also explain why Ekimu and Makuta are so respected.It would probably take a lot of guts to chase down on of those things.
    Also, Scorpions are arachnids.You made Skull scorpio sad :(

  • @ToaArcan
    @ToaArcan 9 лет назад +8

    I really do like this wave, even if I haven't got more than Ekimu and Kulta.
    I like the fact that they're piecemeal, it conveys the feeling of skeleton warriors better than it would if they were just heavily-armoured warriors with skull masks. And the fan-backstory of Scorpio is so much better than the real one.
    I see I'm not the only one with an unconditional love of Ekimu. I really like the feel of him being a badass Dwarven king, and the Chima armour helps with that, I think.
    With regards to your thoughts on Bionicle G2 and its naysayers, the 2015 sets are the only ones I've ever decided I want dupes of, so I can still add their parts to MOCs but keep the whole line built and displayed.
    And speaking of MOCs, I'd really like to see your MOCs and mods on DA at some point. They look really good from what you've shown of them here, and I'd love to have some clearer views of them.

      The peices actually aren’t that fragile. They look very similar, and to distinguish the skull warrior knockoffs to the real one, i keep the real one like how it is, and mix and match the bones around with the knockoffs.

It is possible so i am staying hopeful.

    I actually really liked the Makuta's names. They sound like a bunch of weapons and monsters with words like terror, mutant and axe which they should. They are the main villains. There are a few dumb ones (Vamprah) but overall I think it gave the Makuta their own sounding names which fit their place in the story.

    For the Protector's names, I can see what you mean. But I don't think the names should have to be based off any real languages in order to sound nice. Besides, LEGO was banned from using the Maori language, so I think that's why I think they made up the names of the Protectors' names that way. So that they wouldn't get sued by the Maori people, or anyone else in a different language. I understand if you don't find the names as interesting, but still this is something to think about. However, I wish LEGO could use more words from the Latin language in BIONICLE G2, like they did in 2009. That would be great.

    One thing I think is really interesting with the skull villains is that the zombie like aesthetic gives somewhat of a peak at what a Bionicle looks like below the mechanical shell. I mean, Bionicles are (to my understanding) essentially cyborgs covered in metallic and robotic components hiding an organic body, but we've never gotten to see what that organic part looks like. With these, however, we at least get a glimpse of it, and I find that to be really interesting.

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple  6 лет назад +1

      Not sure how it is for G2, but G1's Toa are sorta like General Grievous, like a metal ant with living organs and bits of muscle tissue holding the frame together, making how they appear in the first three movies incredibly accurate. The 2009 characters, beings from another planet, are almost entirely organic with a few cyborg upgrades, basically the opposite, making their movie portrayal incredibly inaccurate.

    • @pastaman64
      @pastaman64 6 лет назад

      @@NickonPlanetRipple I guess the 2009 set's movie portrayal was inaccurate as a result of the characters looking like the toys since, at its core, it was meant to be a toy commercial. The toys (with their billions of pistons and such) probably looked very mechanical to the people making the movie, so they portrayed it like that.
      I could be wrong though since I haven't really seen any of the movies. Heck, I've barely even known anything about Bionicle 'til quite recently, so as I said, chances are I'm about as wrong as one could be.

    People who say the new Bionicle sets suck because the story is simplified make no sense to me.
    Bionicle, above all else, is a toy line. The fact that G1 had a massive amount of lore bahind it was icing on the cake. A toyline doesn't need a great story to be engaging because it's the toys themselves that make them fun. A great story to back it up is a fantastic bonus but it isn't ever necessary. Yes, the new story is very bare bones, but the sets (the meat and potatoes of the franchise) are phenomenal and, hell, arguably better than what G1 offered.
    The story behind Bionicle is what drew me into the franchise the most back then, and yet I still think that 2015 is probably Bionicle's best year. The simple story doesn't bother me, and if anything it leaves kids more room to formulate their own stories with the sets as well as make their own unique characters with the CCBS system allowing for more customization without the ol' fear of joint and pieces snapping and braking every which way.
    Perhaps one way of looking at it is that with G1's story getting more focus from development, the sets received less focus, featuring more form than function. Now with a simple story, G2 has more focus on the sets. I dunno.
    When I first got news of Bionicle's resurrection, I figured that I'd simply buy around 2 sets for nostalgia's sake. But what wound up happening is that I became a fan all over again. I adore these sets, Kopaka being my personal favorite, with Tahu, Ekimu, and Gali trailing close behind.
    I look forward to seeing what Lego has in store for this franchise in the future.

    I sadly can't relate as much as you can as far as how you felt when you first saw the sets on shelves since I did, and still do, have that feeling that CCBS just doesn't hold that mystical look and feel BIONICLE once had along with the fact that HF 2.0 just ruined the building system for me and replaced my love with hate. I can say that after purchasing all of the protectors, and still trying to obtain the Toa since I was a bit late to getting involved with them, that BIONICLE has definitely made me respect the CCBS. I will never relive how I felt back in 2001 opening up Gali and Lewa and smelling those new in canister parts, god such a fond memory and the furthest back memory of my life I can still remember to this day, so fond that I still remember the layout of the living room where I opened the sets in a house I can't remember at all.
    BIONICLE is back, and now after buying some of last year's and this year's sets I can be happy about it and can still enjoy building the sets as they slowly include more TECHNIC elements, and while I can't feel the same as I did in 2001 with the Toa as you have, which I envy you for being able to feel that exact nostalgia with these sets, I will never say these are Hero Factory, because these sets tried... What I can say though is I wish there were blind box mask packs with more masks, and chances to get different colored Protector mask color combinations like gold with trans purple for Makuta, red with trans blue, green with trans red, the mask packs would be so perfect and would guarantee LEGO to have all of my money, that's the one thing this year was really missing in my opinion.

      Ah, the main LEGO products I've ever bought and built are BIONICLE, so my nostalgia resides in them primarily, though I can understand what you mean though cannot entirely relate. Either way, at least you're able to enjoy the sets a LOT from what you say in your reviews and I can respect and admire how enthusiastic and positive you are about them all, heck your reviews are what convinced me to even buy any of them in the first place to give them a shot because of how much you really spoke so highly of them.
      I can definitely see what you mean, and it's good you can feel such a great and positive feeling building these sets, and after having some first hand experience with some of the 2016 sets I eagerly await what you think of them as well.

    While I do mostly agree with you on names having consistent patterns, I don't really mind it as much. I'd argue that names slowly deviated from their linguistic pattern ever since the Maori incident. At least LEGO at least won't be accused of stealing a language again.
    Either way, I prefer the Protector names over, for lack of a better term, pun-names that BIONICLE used for a while. Names like Mantax, Krika, Vamprah, etc. reminds me of old 80's toyline characters, something not great for immersion. The only pun name that worked for me was Chirox, if only because the word "Chiroptera" isn't known to most people.

    The haters just need to get off the soap box. This mentality of "THE ORIGINAL IS THE ONLY" is so common, it's rampant in the Pokemon fandom, and I only need to mention Star Wars to emphasize the point. Can't we just appreciate the fact that the new stuff ACTUALLY EXISTS?! It's kind of the reason Pokemon is still around, and why Bionicle and Star Wars are even coming back to begin with, concepts that became a gigantic hit that became the childhood for a large majority of people. I'm sure most that are about 18-25 years old has at least heard of one of these as a kid, if not more. Then people put on nostalgia glasses and flame to the ground anything that doesn't give them that nostalgia. Logic.

    • @legionnormandy3746
      @legionnormandy3746 9 лет назад +2

      +XxZekeKnightxX I'd rather Bionicle to have stopped existing than it turning into what it is now. Some people don't hate on these because they have nostalgia glasses on, there are clear reasons why the originals were superior that someone who had absolutely no nostalgia could see. You get someone who has never seen a Bionicle and show them some older sets (not necessarily the very first ones, I'd say mid to late generations were best) and they'd clearly see which style is superior.
      God, I wonder if I'll ever get over this new style. I feel so personally offended by it.

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple  9 лет назад +4

      +Legion Normandy That's just it. You're talking exclusively about the STYLE. The skin, the fluff, the dressing. You don't pay any mind to things like posability, functionality, durability, the things that are needed for a toy to really work. In terms of simply being able to play with it, the new Toa are some of the best we've ever had. As for how they look, your argument is purely anecdotal. Yeah, let's see what happens when you sit two figures next to each other, and ask someone to fiddle around with them for a little bit and see which one they think is better, without you saying anything beforehand that could skew their opinion in any direction, and see what happens. Some will prefer the old, some will latch onto the new. You can't just... claim that everyone has the same taste you do to support your stance!
      Heck, when it comes to nostalgia goggles, I would think they'd have the opposite effect on someone's view. That they'd ignore the limitations and failings of earlier figures and dismiss all the improvements that have been made because they prefer a certain style that they're nostalgic about. The people who say they like these new figures say so because they genuinely appreciate CCBS. It isn't because they're so desperate to have something CALLED Bionicle that they'll accept any ol' thing no matter how bad it is. They genuinely don't think CCBS is a bad building system! Is that really so hard to imagine??? That someone could feel that way and isn't just stupid as a person?
      I just... I think the view that Bionicle should stay dead and buried because you can't stand to see it in its current form is a very selfish one. You're basically saying "I had my fun, now I won't let ANYONE ELSE HAVE FUN because their fun is different than my fun and my fun is better!" Think of how many Transformers fans have felt this way over the years, all the... DOZENS of times it's been remade or soft-rebooted. People like to cling to a particular version of something, THEIR special thing, but that can so easily make them biased.

    • @XxZekeKnightxX
      @XxZekeKnightxX 9 лет назад

      Legion Normandy That's exactly the talk I'm talking about. It's like saying the Prequel Star Wars movies are "all flash no bang", and anyone who likes it is a one-dimension lunatic and not a "true Star Wars fan", heck, that might even be said about the new trilogy, and we'll have another schism in the fanbase because of that too. Just because it's not the Toa Mahri or the updated Toa Nuva doesn't mean it's crap. It's different, sure, and with the later times better technology comes along, but is technology a bad thing then? Should we just go back to the flimsy upper body posability of the Toa Metru? Or the faceless Toa Inika? I'm sure many fans were put off by both, because it wasn't the Toa Mata/Nuva, because the style was different. Does that mean they were bad? Absolutely not.

    • @legionnormandy3746
      @legionnormandy3746 9 лет назад +2

      +NickonAquaMagna I believe that if someone genuinely thinks that CCBS is a superior system then you're just wrong. Wrong by most standards you could judge it by. Posability, functionality, and durability were all fine in the originals. If they weren't there wouldn't be a conversation in the first place. We had everything that is available now along with all the benefits of the past. It's not just stylistic preferences, they're practical advantages. The pieces that were used in the past, the ways they worked as a whole set of figures, and especially THE ABILITY TO ACTUALLY MAKE GOOD MOCS which is nearly completely lost with the CCBS system.
      You say playing with the new Toa is a better experience, well it isn't for anyone that appreciated the versatility of the old style. I appreciated creating my own bionicles that were completely different from anything else there is. True creativity, unrestricted by a faulty skeletal system. The most you could hope to accomplish with the new set is making something vaguely different from the rest or creating something unique that would still pale in comparison to something that could be created in the old system (that applies for both mocs and the company build special sets). Also I very rarely see purely new-age bionicle mocs, they all borrow from the old sets for pieces because of the difficulty to create something unique using the limited pieces/types of pieces they supply in the newer sets. This is not just me or people with nostalgia bias that see this either. Its a practical problem, not a personal problem. We are being practically restricted by the new sets and CCBS, not personally (well, that too, but that's not necessarily relevant).
      I'd like Bionicle to stay complex, if we were able to handle it as children then new children should be able to too. We shouldn't be restricting them like this. This is why people still love Bionicle so much even after they grow out of the demographic, because they got an experience out of it that was meaningful. We were challenged, and given tools to create anything we wanted. We were coddled, but still given the same tools to create something simple, and something magnificent. Each set was distinct, with new and innovative pieces that changed everything. One new piece, one new weapon, and entire creations were born and destroyed. I can't imagine that happens now to to CCBS. I have never looked at a new set and thought any real progress was made. Sure, minor things have changed since the first wave of Hero Factory, but with the same faulty system it can never truly flourish. Maybe I am too old, maybe kids nowadays don't find the same value in building in the way that I did. Maybe they want to be streamlined, want things to be less difficult, even at the cost of potentially making something great. Even think of the special sets from the old days for gods sake. Maybe it is just how I envisioned Bionicle to be, but I do not think these notions are purely mine, and disablement.
      Bionicle meant something very specific both stylistically and functionally for most of its lifetime. That's what it was. Throughout the sets there was a clear style (which has now gotten much more blocky, cartoony, simplified, and less detailed) that is now gone. We build brands and names and these... identities for a reason. It's just what it is. To throw most of that away... you may as well not call it Bionicle. Keep it Hero Factory and just let Bionicle be Bionicle. Not this hybrid shadow of its former self. When you make something with the same name as something else, you have expectations of what it will be. The creators have an obligation to those who enjoy the brand to keep things to a certain standard, and these new bionicles in my opinion have broken that trust and expectation. If you're a Batman fan, you'd get upset if they change his character into a black man that kills people. Sure he gets to keep the title, and he looks... similar. Feels similar, but you can't help but feeling as though they should have kept their hands out of Batman. You don't make the TMNTs aliens. You don't change the feel and looks like this of a specific type of toy this much. The old bionicles were consistent, they all felt like they worked within their universe whether above or below see even. These new figures don't even remind me of the old ones, they're cartoony, and blocky, they aren't too detailed, and stylistically they're on the verge of being completely divorced from the Bionicle universe. Call it something different if you're going to go this far! That's what I mean when I said I would have rather them just ended Bionicle. Let Bionicle just be what it is, beginning to end. Let is live and die as what it was for 90% of its lifetime. New toys for a new generation, don't leech of an old brand just for name recognition, that's just as lazy as some of the other disrespectful reboots I'm sure we've both seen. Does that make sense?
      Well, this certainly got escalated quickly.

    I don't like having Skull warrior with the darker mask, I gave him the silver skull mask, and gave SkullGrinder the Darker mask.

    G2’s biggest weakness:
    1. Lack of advertising
    2. Underwhelming lore/worldbuilding
    3. The highest quality CCBS sets LEGO’s ever produced… At prices nobody could afford

    I personally really hated PoI's name until I started pronouncing it with emphasis on the I, and not on the Zo.

    I don't think that backstory for slicer is canon. In the same paragraph thing it also says his swords are fused to his hands, and we know that ain't true

      Also, I don't think anywhere has it specifically stated that scorpios are native to okoto and this is an undead one. I think that Scorpios are from the skull raiders homeland, as I'm pretty sure the skull raiders are not dead, and scorpios are just a beast they use for battle and the one pohatu fought was a SKULL scorpio, and that kulta has been sending warriors and scorpios out along with the spiders. How would korgot know what a skull warrior was if they were only in the city.

      than you you were always the reasonable logical one with the whole
      sonic 1 is not to fast sonic 3 is fast but wants you think sonic unleashed
      is boring sonic games need high speed nonlinear platforming blended
      beautifully all that good stuff so till that video thanks a lot :-)
