In job sector Kolkata has been lagging behind for quite a long time but to be honest our whole country is poor and backward so I don't care if your city has two more shopping malls. As someone born and brought up in Kolkata, I believe this video shows a rather half hearted and skewed representation of the city, highlighting slums, hand pull rikshaws and a regressing colonial past. Whether that is to appeal to Western viewers stereotype of India or an honest mistake or shortage of time, I do not know. It isn't like Kolkata lacks modern bridges, large hotels, skylines, big shopping arcades, wide roads etc. It isn't like it isn't booming with Indian culture along with its Colonial past, which its Durga Puja is reminiscent of. They showed a dilapidated Kumartuli road but never showed the idol making areas in the same location. They didn't bother showing the modern, clean and well maintained parts of South Kolkata, Salt Lake or EM Bypass. They didn't show the more well maintained and posh ghats like Princep. Not to mention that each of the dishes the lady cooks has a Bengali name that they do no bother mentioning. They also do not represent the love of Bengalis for street food and their own beloved Mother Tongue. They do not show that while all of India is steeped in communal hatred, Kolkata is the only last bastion of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence, as evidenced by St Paul's Cathedral, Nakhoda Masjid, Thanthania Kalibari, Jewish Synagogues all being important cultural attractions. There literally is so much more to Kolkata as a city that this video conveniently ignores, hence trivialising the city as a whole.

    • @shounakkundu3053
      @shounakkundu3053 5 лет назад +20

      @youcometome9 'not a bastion of Communal harmony' compared to what? To some Utopia you create in your head, obviously it isn't. Compared to the rest of India or to any multicultural society in the world for that matter, Bengalis are a lot more tolerant. Why? Part of it comes from laziness that doesn't play into divisivenss and the other part comes from a sense of harmony that thankfully most Bengali politicians do not seek to destroy.
      'Division between East and West Bengal', sure your Google search will return divisiveness which in reality doesn't extend beyond a East Bengal Mohun Bagan rivalry. If that is what you call Communal tension, you must be living in some sort of Paradise.
      'romanticized Communism' sure, we had our problems with Socialism, which sort of ruined the economy of the state. But surprisingly enough, we're still Economically more productive than most other Indian cities. Sure we aren't an Economic powerhouse, but then I don't see why we need to be one for that matter. Kolkata has always been more of a cultural, food and art paradise, and it's really crazy if you think other cities can match close to it in any way.
      Finally 'Kolkata isn't half as good as you think it is' is a mere assumption on your part. And debates aren't won on mere assumptions, they're won on proper logical analysis. What is good? What are your parameters of a city being 'good'? Why are such parameters absolute and not variable according to a person's tastes?
      If you notice carefully, my problem was with half hearted portrayal of Kolkata, where they don't show most of it. I can't make you consider my city to be 'good' because you will have your own reasons to label a city as good. What I can though, is make you see everything about my city rather than a half hearted rendition of it before you judge. Cheers.

The Raj was ruled by ruthless military leaders and business moguls, but there were many ordinary British people that settled in India that fell in love with your country and culture. These ordinary people were usually artists or poets that described the beauty of your country especially Kolkata and Bengal through their works many of their descendants in the Anglo-Indian community still call the City of Joy home much love from your brother in Britain who hopes to visit your beautiful city someday.

    Hi, I have born and brought up in Kolkata, you have captured the true essence of Kolkata. Some people might say, the city lost its pace due to mismanagement of governments or illegal residence of refugees. But they are wrong, no one is a refugee here, we bangal( the refugees) and ghoti(the inhabitants) live together in Kolkata in a very good harmony, and we respect each other unless its a East Bengal - Mohunbanagn Derby day. Again, if you are blaming the government, I might say there are hardly any cities in India which is decorated as Kolkata, you can find glittering lights across the city all the year through, along with different cultural events/festivals. We just achieved a level of freedom and peace here, where we don't quantify the success or joyness by the amount of money we earn, but we are more sensitive about our cultural freedom and artistic enrichment, so it is a city of Joy indeed. You cannot understand us neither we accept you to, it is something every bengali have in their heart.

    Really proud. I was delighted to see.
    I would like to say that when a person from abroad comes to visit India, especially Bengal, they basically want to visit the city of Kolkata. But apart from the city of Calcutta, there are two other old districts of West Bengal beside the river Ganges in which innumerable archeological and historical sites are still intact which are mostly hidden from the eyes of a large part of the people. The main reason for this is that the splendor of Kolkata has taken it to a place from hundreds of years ago where many more important places are lying in the dark. Nor do we try to understand it that way. So request to expatriates like you to come to Howrah outside Kolkata, come to Hooghly and feel that how much things are there to see.

How is taking Bangladeshis good when we have so many illiterate people in many districts- who side with some party for their lifetime and do riots, gundabazi and what not! People here have anti-corporation mindset, but don't realise that without companies there would be little job prospects. That's why Mamata is trying to bring companies in Bengal after blocking the setting up of Tata plant many years ago.
      When there are communal riots, didi puts blockade and blackout, and does little to punish the perpetrators who are mostly those Bangladeshi descendents. This won't be any good.

    I have lived in Kolkata for 2 years and when you compare it to other metros, it is a city undergoing decay. Probably the communist rule for so many years kept the industries out for a very long time which meant that Kolkata didn't develop as other metros have. But the same communist rule kept the cost of living low. You may not earn much but you can have a good life here. The people are lovely and as far as culture and intellectual chats go, nothing gets better than Kolkata.

      @@ankitraghuwanshi5055 actually there two faces of Kolkata.. one is the OLDER Kolkata which basically lies in the northern and central Calcutta and the other one is the MODERN Kolkata which is the New Town and Southern parts of Calcutta..
      And unfortunately, the older Calcutta is visited by most people due its architectural uniqueness and some quite incredible tourist spots. Calcutta was once called the City of Palaces due to the old heritage and architectural beauty that the houses beared long ago. Nowadays, those places are ruined due to lack of proper maintenance. And the substantial rise in the number of street hawkers occupying the pavements, the old electrical and cable wirings are making the scenario to look even worse.
      And when you'd visit places like New Town, Rajarhat, office spaces like Park Street and Sector 5, you'd experience same feeling that you could get in posh areas of Bandra, Andheri of Mumbai. There are quite a few high rises, green and clean roads with proper infrastructural installments like flyovers, subways and under construction metro lines in the New Town area which will be opened before 2021. These place are never highlighted because these are the recent developments that the city has seen, and these places doesn't actually represent the uniqueness, cultural heritage that the city had.
      I hope that you've got the things that I'm trying to make out. Do visit the modern Kolkata once if you really want to see the development of the city.
      Cheers!
