    The guys from Dodge agree with you. That's why the car was sold in limited form and I thank them for it. They knew that there were just enough people out there that didn't agree with the host and didn't care about ultimate practicality, but just wanted the Durango with the most powerful engine Dodge had to offer. Its a specialty car for a special group of car enthusiasts. It was never meant to satisfy the masses or the common folk.

    I'm fortunate enough to daily drive a 2021 GLS63 AMG, and it's just a spectacular accomplishment. I take long trips in it in spectacular comfort and excellent autonomy, I tow a 7700 pound trailer with it very often (the air ride makes this the best tow vehicle I've ever used), I've driven miles and miles of sand dunes/beaches in NC with it without a single scare, and I've even passed cars on track at VIR with it. It does so much so well. Worth every penny!

    No, the Durango isn't built on the same same chassis as the prior generation GLS. It's built on the same platform as the prior generation GLE, as those were some of the last products to come out of the Daimler-Chrysler venture.

  • @iggibars
    @iggibars 2 года назад +6

    The info about "the prior GLS" chassis underpinning the Grand Cherokee and Durango is not accurate.
    The ML used a platform that was built specifically for the ML. The GL used a modified ML platform that is built just for the GL/GLS. Though the ML and GL shared platforms, their actual chassis were vastly different.
    A stripped(not to say it was cheap, but that it was modified to use with parts that Jeep had vs what Mercedes had, which forced changes in angles, diameters, etc) down version of the ML chassis was then given to Jeep to use on the Jeep Grand Cherokee. They then took that JGC chassis and modified it again for use on the Durango since it didn't need to be as durable and offroad capable. The only things similar between a Durango and GL/GLS chassis is that they're both bade of steel, they are all super ridged frame designs, and they still are very capable and have shown to be nearly indestructible and impervious to wear. It's one of the reasons this is the best Durango that has ever come out IMO.

      What's your point? The GLS63s starts at $134k, it's in another world from a Durango truck with a supercharge engine. So what does "hold more value" even mean in this comparison. The Durango is no different than a normal Durango but with a big engine in it, the GLS is the S class version of Mercedes SUV's, which means it has all the bells and whistles. So even if the Durango "holds it value" you're getting 2 times the car with the GLS63s even with it losing it value in 5 years. So which one would you buy in 5 years?

    The Durango feels too cheap. The GLS is the one to buy. Yet $149,400 - $91,455 = $57,945. Yes, the Durango feels cheaper BECAUSE IT IS FIFTY EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS LESS!! You guys and your conclusions are hysterical. Yes, the Durango has some plastic inside, but it still has plenty of leather, alcantara and forged carbon fiber too. No, it doesn't have massaging seats, but the $58k savings buys a lot of massages. To say the GLS is the better vehicle, price aside, I agree with. I understand *how* they did it, I just don't get *why*. Supercars are built to deliver uncompromised driving performance. These trucks attempt to be sportscars, GT cars, and hauling machines in one package. Let's forget all pretenses of off-roading because these are built for pavement use. There's no individual thing they do that could not be made better by compromising all the other mission profiles.
    I get that it's trying to be all things to all people, but I'm confused on who these trucks are actually *for*.
    At the same time, I agree with Todd that we could get more focused sportscars if these monsters scratch the high-powered itch.

      I agree, I enjoy the fact these exist but their market is someone
      Like me. Once you have that 4th kid, you now require 3 row seating. No way around it. My wife drove a 2015 Honda Odyssey, which we bought in 2015. 3 row SUV or Minivan, those were our choices if we intended to do things as a family of 6. Unfortunately, most folks can’t drop $100k on a vehicle. Especially, a family with 4 hungry mouths to feed. We traded my wife’s Odyssey last year, which was paid off, for a 2021 Tahoe for her at half the price of the Durango Hellcat. In a two parent household, with 4 busy kids, dad needs a car too. So I have my 2018 Mustang GT for performance thrills. Busy young family requires at least 2 vehicles. If we were to buy the Durango Hellcat, we would only be able to afford one car, the Durango Hellcat, and if that were true, we would not be able to satisfy all of the appointments our busy family of 6 needs to meet. The market target buyer seems like a really narrow slice of the pie. But they sold

Not only do the materials look out of place, it just looks too utilitarian with all that brightwork switchbank in your face. The thing is, how many people can afford a $150k car vs a $90k car? It's not just a matter of ponying up for the more expensive car because it is nicer and more advanced. It is literally out of reach for most people--even those making pretty damn good money to afford a $90k car. So if you want that GLS 63 performance in a 7-passenger vehicle, the Dodge is/was the only option available last year. But I do agree that the Durango Hellcat is not "worth" the $30k premium over the SRT. They charged that much because they knew they could, and it sold out.
