Milspec Fuel is often a Kero-&-Diesel blend that can be used in both traditional diesel engines, & also Turbine/Jet Engines.
Subject to ambient temperature different formulations exist.
That is to say Jet A-1 (naphtha-kerosene) blended with what you might know as "Winter Diesel" fuel.
A water canon instead of a machine gun on the cab roof would be pretty cool
that thought did come up when we where figuring out how we want to build it!
That would be a great idea as it would give good vision to deal with a fire.
@@LifeofLind You may be able to source an old surplus turret (without the gun) meaning you only have to figure out a way to put a water sprayer on top of the spigot.
I think the force of a water cannon would be more than the turret was designed for, so it would probably require a different mounting system - but yes, for fighting fires a water cannon that could be directed side to side would be good, as would sprayers on the side and rear. Of course, one would need a good sized water tank and pump system.
I’ve got one. I love it. Building into an overlander slowly
I was Motor Sergeant in a Missouri National Guard unit (in the 1960s), and while we were primarily mechanized infantry with tracked (APC) vehicles, we had an assortment of support vehicles like jeeps and 2 1/2 ton 6X trucks. We also had two 5 ton 6X trucks, which were beasts. This vid brought back a LOT of memories. Thanks!
When I was on active duty we sometimes ran JP 5 jet fuel in our diesel vehicles, it was clear also.
good to know! thanks!
Primary fuel was Diesel #1, #2, or AP, but 70% to 90% of other fuels could be mixed with diesel, depending on how smooth the engine would run.
As a veteran rural firefighter you have my admiration. I have been involved in adapting several military vehicles for fire use and enjoyed every one of them. I regret I never had the opportunity to do one of these cab overs. I have seen a couple of SS chassis being used as water tenders on local fires. Such a great vehicle.
Nothing wrong with being Canadian for a second. Been one my whole life and proud to be Canadian. Great video.
thats awesome! thanks for the comment

I am worried about you folks though.
The clear fuel is a mixture of JP5 and kerosene. It has a 10 year shelf life. On average. The batteries if below 12v are usually fried. The 31 p 31 batteries will swap over. They won't last but are readily avaliable. Their should be a interlock for the cab raised. With the cab up it should not start. Also the three switches. The 3 switches in the oval on the right. Make sure the main is on.
M-43 Detector and Decontamination Apparatus is for when your exposed to the bad stuff on the battlefield. This vehicle is top notch.
I stumbled across your channel and took a look because of the truck. These are great trucks. The diesel looked funny because the military went to a universal fuel, JP8, in the late 80s. It works for internal combustion and turbine engines. There should be an operators manual in the cab. If not, they are available online as well as complete maintenance manuals. They will be the TM (Technical Manual) series. If you Google M1085 TM several sites should come up.
awesome thanks for the help!
Hope you and the family had a great thanksgiving.
After the short teaser I’ve been excitedly waiting for this . Keep the great vids coming 👍
I hope you also had a great thanksgiving! thanks for watching!
Another great video! Looks like a beast of a rig and can't wait to see it upgraded with water tank and some hose turrets to shoot water.
I’ve seen these rigs as they go by. Very cool to get a close up look at one of them. The rear suspension was is awesome with how it articulates. Is the leafs on a hinge pin. Can’t wait to see it performing it’s new duties. Thanks Dustin!
These trucks are awesome dont get me wrong, but they half too much electrical nonsense in them. If something electrical goes, good luck as a civilian getting the right parts. The old deuce and a half is a much better bang for your buck, much easier to work on and a better truck overall.
Great video as always , looking forward to seeing the progress you make on this truck 🤙
Thanks! me too!
Great truck. It'll definitely make a great offroad firetruck.
i agree!
Love these, looking forward to seeing more
awesome machine you got there sir.. 👍
as a retired rural fire fighter, I would like to see more videos, perhaps the outfitting of your "brush rig" Interesting that you are up north and will need to freeze proof most of the plumbing if it's to be used in the winter. I will look forward to watching the build. we have a few "Duce and a halfs" in my area converted to brush rigs. I have not see any 5 tons, but have been away from the service for years. good luck with your build.
Thank you! we plan on doing more videos, up here our shop is heated so we fire up the trucks and pumps inside and recerc them while we drive to the location although they are not heavy used in the winter.
military often uses JP8 or jet fuel
Super Cool Unit!!!!
The connection behind the battery box is for a NATO standard jumper cable. It's been many years and I wish we had trucks like this. The fuel might be JP 8 they were going to the 1 fuel army when I retired .
Wow, what an amazing gift.
Would make a brilliant go anywhere camper .great video again
i would love to put a overland camper on the back of this thing!
I was here to say the same. Beast of a thing.
Fantastic video. Look forward to seeing it transform to a fire brush truck
I've always wanted a 5ton , they are beasts
OK. Now I want one! Pretty great video and appears the fix was pretty simple!
It's super cool! Although I am still having electrical gremlins... some times it's still a crank no start. and i still can't shut it down without pulling the batterys and turning everything on.
The 5-tons we had when I was in was the generation before this particular unit they were multi-fuel platform we could run JP-8, or JP-5, diesel, along with 4 or 5 different types of fuel that we didn't use where I was. But they were set up for us to go into any country and find fuel and utilize these vehicles. Looks like you got one that came out of our CRP program with the mileage that's on that vehicle I would say it's one that got ran in the fleet then went in for maintenance and directly went to a storage facility so we would have exceptional vehicles to take into battle when that call came.
All that motor needs is air and fuel and she's going to run. Diesels don't need power to continue running since they are a high-compression motor and that's what creates the combustion. The transmission might not work because of electrical failure but that motor should! I remember a 5-ton that started to runaway on one of my mechanics, I had an aluminum clipboard that I threw over the air intake tube and that darn motor sucked it into the pipe creating enough of a blockage to kill it before it let loose. We lucked out on that one. Ended up the guy's turned my clipboard into an award that no one ever wanted to get lol. This video brought back so many memories of my time in as a mechanic and then running a shop of 120 Mechanic's good times with some good guys.
I've recently watched a video where someone turned one of these into a bug-out RV they are a go anywhere rig. It should be a great firetruck for many years to come. Keep up the good work!
yes as i understand it . this was on jp-8 runs fine on clear diesel though
that thing is a beast! i love it.
Great video and great truck!
what an awesome truck.
Good to see you Fella
Thanks David! and thanks for the comment
I think you should convert int into a land expedition vehicle
Whow so a nice Truck ;) I had a Magirus for the Desert, here they have the Styer has the same Cabin like yours, but your Engine is nicer... regards from Germany
Nice work and great video
thank you!
15:53 fuel was probably jet A or kerosene
There is a panel under the P/S rubber flap used to test the engine when the cab is up. Also be careful about the CTIS (central tire inflation), it likes to leak ALOT and you'll walk outside to a flat tire
You never stop amazing me brother!
Thanks man!
Great job. I learned new things that I will use if I ever need to srart a big diesel engine
you never know!
@@LifeofLind my sister’s husband is a truck driver. I will share this knowledge with him.
It's going to be a good project truck whatever you decide to use it for.
off road fire engine
Kick ass Dunstin! Love this kinda shit! You know me. Keep "doing the things" brother.
Thanks man! I'm excited! you keep doing the things too!
@@LifeofLind absolutely! 👊🏻
You could plant a row if evergreens to break the wind.
I need to! just have to put in a drip system to keep them alive
What a beast Justin, what a beast. Should do well for the fire fighters.
i agree. thanks!
That truck is a hoot ! What a score 😁
should make a pretty cool fire truck!
Ask the military ever so sweetly if they have a spare five hundred gallon tank trailer they arent using and wouldnt mind donating to such a good cause, even a fuel bowser trailer can be converted to carry a decent amount of water - could keep it in the field fighting fires longer...just a thought.
that is a good thought!
Excellent
Thanks
Diesel fuel is crystal clear until it is dyed based on it tax category. Nearly dropped a loaf the first time we were loading 600 tons of fuel and pulled a clear sample, thought it was water at first....
Military uses JP 8. So all diesel engines can use the same fuel to include turbines. So Tanks with turbine engines and Humvees can share the same fuel
Damned RUclips didn't give me the alert for this.
yeah been happening for almost everyone. have 50k subs and only getting around 5k views!
Probably need to change fuel and air filter. Make sure you switch off the master switch to save the batteries. Best of Luck on your new project. Stay Safe Out There 🇺🇸
Thanks for the tip
Awesome video startin her up, should be a mint rig, I want to get one in a couple years myself, I'm Australian and I wanna move to the middle of nowhere and do dumb stuff on a large property with no neighbours for a good kilometer or 10 so should be fun to see if my future holds one of these Stewies. how much did you buy her for? and where did you buy it from, Ive just been looking at an ex military surplus auctions website.
nice one man.
Thanks!
Nice truck, I haven't been getting your video's recommended again.
Water got in the tank somewhere. Be sure to turn on the master switch on the drivers side , on the right side of the battery box. Replace the batteries.
Oh wait, that's just a Steyr truck, guess Stewart & Stevenson worked with them.
that's one heck of a vehicle, be hard to get that thing stuck
Hey Dustin. Long time watcher, first time commenter.
I’m incredibly jealous. I’d love something exactly like this for old vehicle shows here in the UK, but acquiring one is very difficult and expensive, never mind the cost of fuel! I’d also love something like your Barth, that thing is awesome!
How did you score this military truck for free, if you don’t mind me asking?
it really is an awesome rig. we got it through the us government transfer for the fire department. I'm sure some numbers moved around somewhere, but us as a department didn't have to pay anything.
US military doesnt use diesel. Everything and i mean everything runs on JP8 which is jet fuel.
There's a manual primer pump on these trucks iirc, you dont need to crank it for hours and burn the starter. You got air in your fuel lines.
thanks!
Crack the injector pipes and bleed the air out the pipes. Check the fuel stop is getting power
Nedd a disclaimer about simply safe only available in the US. Cheers
we used JP-8 fuel its only problem no oil to help with seals
That connection next to the battery is used to jump start
How did you get it "Free"? Nice truck, I'd love to get one to run the logging trails in northern Minnesota. I bet it'd be more fun than my 1976 F250 Highboy 4 x 4.
A military standard design using M.A.N. technology, it was able to use different fuels without preparation.[4][5] Its primary fuel was Diesel #1, #2, or AP, but 70% to 90% of other fuels could be mixed with diesel, depending on how smooth the engine would run.
It's not traditional diesel. It's a kerosene blend more common to jet fuel (one fuel for all military engines whether they be turbines or diesel cycle).
yeah i think people have been telling me it's called J8 or something like that.
cos this truck is so epic and you got it so cheap, you can feel good about spending a few k really making this thing a total beast
What did you call the fuel bottle at 15:55? Looking for alternative can, harbor freight steel cans are a contender
Pretty sure the clear fuel is because the US military uses a special diesel fuel that's a bit of a splice between kerosene and winter diesel. Or something like that.
Basically the government tells the EPA to piss off, hence why they can still use two stroke diesel engines in their HETs.
think it's called jp8
Hi. How did you get it turned off? Does it have power steering?
That's gonna make a great brush truck .fab a old rear engine truck on it with a tank .
Yes it will
Do you want to get rid of the m4 mounts
Hey Dustin! I could see you turn 1 into the ultimate off road RV armageddon vehicle.......if you dont mind... What does something like that cost @ the auction? Thanks
yeah after driving this one, i really want to build something like that!
civilian purchases at auction is around 10-20k
The horn is on the end of the turn sign stalk
I like it alot
The steering would be much easier with an Agropa steering knob. I think you'd really be able to get around, and with your current steering settings, no danger of flipping.
suicide knobs for the win!
First check the spark in plugs its ok or not
Nice score for the fire department. I wonder what kind of material you could use to quiet up that cab? Also, how'd you get it to shut down?
might need some dynomat and and some rubber to quite it down. but it's an offroad firetruck, i guess it's okay if it's loud... I had to pull the batteries to shut it down. still havent figured that out.
Wear chain saw headphones
@@LifeofLind I worked on diesel generators to provide electricity when there were power outages at phone company offices.
I have a few guesses regarding why it won't shut down.
As I recall there are only two easy ways to stop a diesel.
1) Remove the fuel supply.
2) Remove the air supply (block the air intake).
That could be done by disabling the fuel pumps or a plate that totally blocks the air intake.
I'd check with CAT or the manual.
Did you finely find out how to shut off the engine or not
Before going first lube all joints
The bigger the boy the bigger his toy ,,, ps i'm sure you're fire department will be pleased.
haha yup! agreed!
must be "safety" switch that won't let it start with the cab tilted. Lights right up as it should.
I assume they still use JP-8
Awesome rig man! What's the gallons per mile on that?
GPM is about 3 hahaha
Now that is a truck!
With only that many miles on the clock after 22 years, did the army folk just use it to go to lunch? Great find but!
fired it up drove it in a circle and parked it once a month haha
Right On. Did you ever figure out why it wouldn't stop? lol \m/
haha still not yet, just been taking the battery cables off and turning on the lights to kill it.
@@LifeofLind That'll do in a pinch.
NO dye in the fuel. Road tax makes the companies makes them put it in so they can tell if it is road fuel or for farm or Military use and it is clear fuel
that makes sense thanks!
Military uses Jp8 for fuel
Give the “Diesel Bros.,” a run for the money.
wish i had the kind of cash that those guys do haha i could build all the cool things!
How did you shut it off though lol
Could it have been some sort of bio diesel? 🤷
Den där är rätt lika Scania sbat 111/tgb40 vi har här i Sverige
As a US Army vet, let me give you a little knowledge: The majority of US service persons are between the age of 17(In some very rare cases) to 22 years old. If the truck was allowed to start and drive with the cab tilted forward, How many of those geniuses would try to drive it like that? A lot of them would have tried. I know soldiers and I know the military, there is a lot of waiting around for stuff. I bet the first batch of trucks like that didn't have the cut off switch and some geniuses tried driving it with the cab forward and wrecked a few.
Probably JP8 not diesel?
Lmao looks like someone put straight gas in there 😂 I'd see that all the time got to change your filters drain your lines and tank then put good diesel in and reprime the system
You should keep 1
I want to now haha
@@LifeofLind good looking truck
Just a feedback on the sound. It is too low
No doubt you HAVE to get another one for yourself. Knowing the govt, there must be more.
Glow plugs??
has an intake air heater, no glow plugs
Ok im going to ask the obvious, do you need a cdl for normal use?
most likely not, I know anyone can jump in a 42 foot diesel pusher motor home with air brakes and drive it. probable the same for this since it;s not commercial.
big bertha would be her name
