Certainly different weather than the sign/picture from the trailhead! I'm glad you were able to reach the Eastern Summit despite the weather! Having Scottish ancestors, we really want to visit Scotland when the world returns to normal. It's so fun finding people that share the same drive for travel, and videos like this really inspire us to get out there and see the world! Thanks so much for sharing, when we make our way to Scottland, this might have to make the cut! 😊 Just subscribed to your channel ,and cheers from the USA!🇺🇸
Thanks very much, I'm glad you like the video. It's a wonderful place and definitely worth a visit if you make it to Scotland, even more so if you end of driving the North Coast 500. Good luck with your travels, hopefully the world will start opening up again soon! I will check out some of your videos later, I see you have travelled some of the Western States in America, one of my favourite regions over there!
I'm aware the trip was all filmed at the same time, but I still hope you get better weather each episode! Lol. Very brave standing on the rock on the edge and dealing with all the wind that high up the mountain. Didn't know what a scramble was so learned that as well!
Thanks for the positive thoughts in relation to the weather - you never know, it might still do some good! lol Glad you learned about scrambling, it's good to know talking about it was helpful. Thanks for watching, Scotland was amazing!
I take my hat off to you Matt, definitely not for me 🥺. Some of those drop offs, on that tiny path + the wind factor!!! Well done for reaching the East summit. I really love watching your videos.
Thanks Graham, very kind of you to say! It was certainly a tough hike, steep and very misty towards the end. I was disappointed not to have reached the difficult scramble on route to the actual summit, I was intrigued to see it. I think I made the right decision to turn around though - the wind was howling and it seemed to be getting worse! Some stunning views just below the cloud line so glad I got to see that. Thanks for watching Graham, I hope your planning is going well!
Wow, that's really cool that you went for a proper scramble. As you probably saw from my video, we decided to give it a miss. It's funny how you said about being able to get up, but worried about getting back down. We did a hike in Arizona into a canyon but had the opposite worry, if we went down there, would we be able to get back out?! (We found a different part that was a lot easier!) You did so well to stay up there for as long as you did in that weather, and great to see you make it up to the eastern summit, I agree that it was pretty straight forward and 100% with you that safety should come first! 🙌
The wind and clouds definitely added an edge to the hike but I would have loved to be greeted by the same views as you were in your video! It's crazy how jagged and steep the top is when all around there are flatlands and lochs, it's like it rises out of nothing - love the look of it! Yeah the getting down thing is a worry, especially as I was solo and the weather was bad but you make a good point - it can work both ways. Like on your Arizona trip the last thing you want is to get down and not be able to get back up again, bit of a scary thought. I really wanted to make it to the final scramble though, I'd seen some photos but I just couldn't work out how to get to it - to this day I'm still lost. I'm hoping at some point someone will watch the video and tell me the secrets of where I went wrong - and how I could have found the final scramble. Chances are I wasn't that far away from it!
That was a tough one, was really hoping the weather was going to be clear and still for this one as I'd heard the views from the top are magnificent on a clear day. Sadly it wasn't to be - gives me a reason to go back some day I guess!
We are going to drive NC500 in early June this year, but we try not to get hopes for good weather 😃 Greeteing from Poland, your films had been a huge help in organising our intinerary.
I'm really pleased my videos have helped you to plan your trip - the NC500 is incredible and I'm sure you're going to have a wonderful time!! Don't forget your raincoat though 😂. Love Poland by the way, visited Krakow a few years ago and got a taste - will definitely be back at some point. If you get a chance, let me know how your trip went, would love to hear about it. Best of luck & have a great time.
@@MattWhitingsEurope Kraków is great, but if you ever visit Poland again, I strongly recommend Gdansk and the whole Three City. I will definitely share my our experience on NC500, I really wish those raincoats won't be used too much.
Ha finger's crossed you get some great weather - it's a beautiful route so I think you're going to be in for a treat! Thanks for the suggestion, I very nearly visited Gdansk a few months ago but at the time Poland were requiring a COVID test for entry so I went to Italy instead. Hopefully things will work out in the future so I can visit! Looking forward to hearing all about your travels - enjoy!
Thanks for watching, yeah it was a bit hairy at some points, especially with the wind howling. Shame it was so cloudy at the top because on a clear day the views are said to be magnificent!
Hi Matt, just watched your video, Brilliant, had me a tense sat safely on are 😄. So must of been a bit nerv racking at times. Least you got it on Video. We'll done really enjoyed it. Hope you got down safe enough. Did you treat yourself self to Burger chips & can? Or maybe a Wee Drammie to settle the nerves!!😊. Cheers Grant. 👌
Thanks Grant, glad you enjoyed the video! It was a tough hike but I really enjoyed it! Was a bit sketchy as times and although I was sad not to reach the actual summit I think I did the right thing in turning around - the wind was just too strong! Definitely needed a couple of Scottish refreshments when I got to the hotel that night.
@@MattWhitingsEurope O good to hear. Yeah you did the rite thing stopping when you did. You did the east summit that was a Challenge enough. I bet plenty wouldn't of gone up in that weather but you did!! 👍. I look forward to your next episode. Grant.
I was holding my breath for you on that one. Well done but be careful, please! Maybe it looked more dangerous on the video than it actually was (steepness, wind, and slipperiness)? Probably not.
Thanks Heidi, that was a tough one - the wind at the top was insane! There were definitely some challenging moments but also parts where the video made it look even worse than it actually was. I think I made the right decision to turn back when I did as to go on would have been risky and outside of my comfort zone, even more so with the weather! Thanks for watching, I would love to do it again with better weather! We'll see!
Heidi, we were holding our breath too haha! If the cliffs were not treacherous enough on their own, the slip factor due to the rain certainly made for quite the bold hiking! 😊

Thank you Kate! Glad you enjoyed it. Shame to get such bad weather at the top, I bet on a clear day the views would have been spectacular.
