Lovely views over to the Summer Isles . Brought back memories of kayak camping on the Isles starting from near Gruinard back in the 1970s. Wonderful. Stac Pollaidh is a great marker for navigation when sailing down the west coast. Thanks for the great video. Hope the knee is 100% now. I had a double knee replacement about 18 months ago. Best thing I ever did. I can hillwalk again now after a decade or more of being a semi-cripple and walking downhill in a sideways shuffle!

Hi Murray, I really appreciate your videos very much. I have been doing what I would call functional mobility yoga for two years twice a week and I can't believe the difference it has made to my movement. No more back pain, ITB, or knee issues- in fact no pains in my body at all. I am 66 years old and last year did a 90 km seven day self-supported day through Killarney Provincial Park (in Canada) which is basically up and down and very rocky, quite similar to your hikes. Now that I have discovered the benefits of yoga I'll be continuing with it for the rest of my life.

Good to see you getting up a ' great wee hill!' Although some would say a tough wee hill. Small steps and the bigger hills shall follow once more. It's actually helpful to see how you follow through with your knee recovery etc as it's a problem that plagues alot of hill walkers.

Thanks for video. Been there once with bad weather. Myself having problem with knee. Going up is ok. But down bit hard. You can sit with your legs bent under you for few minutes it helps.
Great to see some improvement in the knee Murray. The indications are good for it going forward. Wonderful little mountain as well. And we call them square sausages down in Yorkshire. As always, take care and see you on the next one.

We were lucky enough to spend a week in Badagyle Cottage, just down the road, and of course I took the dogs for a wee walk to the (lesser) top. Looking at the amount of snow underfoot I’d guess we didn’t miss you by more than a few days (middle of feb)! I’ll keep an eye out for you on future outings! Hope to cross paths soon!

Great to see the knee is recovering, not great when the body starts failing but the brain is willing. We used to have those square sausage things here in South Australia, we called them steakettes. Used to spend all the money on showing horses and dogs so something had to give lol. Looking forward to next vid.

Stac Pollaidh is a beautifully shaped hill and I am glad you were able to achieve your goal. I have reached the stage were downhill does the knees for a few days. Not a lot I can do about it as I am not going to get younger. Hope that your injury and fitness are soon mended and you are back full throttle on your adventures.

I feel your pain Murray, injured knee, hip and ankle over last few weeks. So I’m now in recovery mode and hoping it’s not an operation. The “knees over toes guy” on you tube appears to be a go to for knee longevity and I started to incorporate this into my weekly strengthening exercises. Might be worth a look.
Flat, sliced, square or lorn sausage depending on what part of the world (Scotland) you are in. Great video again, Knee’s, I have had both of them replaced, one now is about 15 years old so getting a bit grinding now. So hill days are about every 6 weeks as it takes a while to recover. glad your getting back out i had a knee op last year was out of action for 3 mths but took my time getting out started small now im not far from 100% and loving it stay safe and keep the videos coming.

Glad the knee held up OK, Murray! I've had problems with mine of late, I picked up some wee patella supports from Amazon and they have certainly helped, especially on the way down. Now for the important bit, the sausages! Steak slice are a fancier, leaner version of Lorne sausage (aka square sausage). An excellent choice regardless of what you call them 😁

Good to see you back! Plus one on the stretching, as an ageing hiker myself, having torn a knee ligament footballing years ago, yoga has made a huge difference for flexibility and recovery (wish I’d discovered it 20 years ago). Originally from Fife so it’s lorne sausage for me too!

He's a world class climber, but us mortals can learn a thing or two from his approach to health and age being no barrier to high performance levels. Not that we're ageing, just gaining experience...

We went to Cul Mhor and camped there last summer.it is stunning scenery. Great to see you getting out,I was a good 12 weeks in knee recovery 3 years ago, and coming down was always more painful.Use kinseology tape if doing a Munro now, especially if not camping and having to trek down. Collagen supplement in powder form has helped my knee tremendously, helps the cartilage. We are pleased to see you out again Murray.😀👍💯🙏 Helen.

Mate I'm so happy for you, remember my comment on the video before? I really hope you don't have anymore setbacks, I'm still in the same boat as you, I'm 29 and have never had surgery though, I've been doing lots of squats and all that band stuff, training the weaker muscles around the knee. remember me saying I've moved south to Cornwall on the coastal path which believe it or not is challenging terrain, certain sections have an alpine feel with the switchback stuff. its usually 400ft ish up then back down again in such a short time, so I've got good access to knee testing hills! had a bit of a set back a few weeks ago, my good leg went a bit bad (IT band), just overdone things and I think it was down to my good side compensating, anyway the moral of that waffle, just bear that in mind, you are no doubt wiser than me but really be careful, watch your good side too, because of my good leg going bad, I've not been able to test my actual bad knee (I've had 2 MRIs, nhs inconclusive, private I found out I had mild IT friction syndrome and mild chondromalacia patellae). I love your optimism for the outdoors, I'm exactly the same but I've developed a real strong skill which many athletes don't have, patience. Im entered in the Eiger Ultra trail in 17 weeks and currently running 5 miles a week HA, all the best, Paul

Good to see you up and about again Murray! Your return to the hills coincides nicely with the lighter days returning to the northern hemisphere. I'm in no position to be giving advice, but I have found that taking collagen powder in my tea every day has really helped my knees, which got pretty cranky after years of gardening. Looking forward to your next video but hope you're taking it easy!
I'm off to Assynt in May. Can't wait... My wife's from Gallaway and I've a pal who was a butcher in Dunoon and it's square or Lorne sausage as far as they're concerned. I'm from way down south and I'd never seen it until I met my wife... Great video as usual.

I feel your pain. Agree last thing needed is surgery. If the body can repair itself it will be stronger than any surgery. The most injury free I have been was when incorporating a significant amount of strength training and stretching into my weekly routine. Neglected that of late and surprise, surprise have suffered. Slow and steady pays off, but hard to stick to when so much love of what you do. Good luck with the recuperation, a season in the gym might not be to your taste, but may pay dividends in the long run. M

After breaking my leg close to the knee, (4 breaks in total!) a physio advised me, when walking up steep slopes, take the steepness out by walking up in a zig zag. 30 years on, i now strap my knee, 2 paracetomol and im managing!
I've used both the terms lorne sausage and square sausage. All I can say for sure is you can't get it down here in Englandshire....probably just as well because it's mostly fat....have you ever grilled lorne sausage....the layer yellow fat under the grill will put you off! Saying that, a morning roll, lorne sausage and a haggis slice...breakfast of champions! Anyway, yes, great video and glad the knee is functioning better....well, I think it is...I got distracted when you started talking about food! lol

There’s nowhere like Assynt. Hope you are on the mend Murray. I had real bother with the knee after the first lockdown and have found a bit of daily yoga a real tonic. Grateful for it because I had a hellish incident when the pain kicked in at the summit of Braeriach when I had to go back out to Linn of Dee! Macdui yesterday in sublime conditions and was thankfully pain-free. Hope you are the same now!

Again like my previous comments a brilliant video. This video resonates with my previous hikes as I also have experienced problems with my right knee. It's been within three months I've been sore on the descents from the local hills near to my hometown of Glasgow and some munros northwards. I'd be keen to hear and learn what you would suggest in terms of easing the aches and pain I'm getting. Naturally I've been using knee braces and Kinesiology tape however it would be good to hear your point of view. Superb Murray 👏 Also just to add to the sausage debate, I've personally always called it square sausage and so does anybody I know. My grandfather is a butcher to trade and has also always called it square sausage. I have a friend who calls it slice and absolutely detests anyone calling it square/lorne/flat. He actually gets deeply offended by it 🤣 I'd personally never heard anyone call it slice until my friend brought it up. I just think it's called something different depending on what part of Scotland you're from. I'm from North Lanarkshire myself. I know it's kinda pointless to argue about it, but I find it funny to talk about it 🤣

Those sausages don't need any extra oil in the pan. That's the beauty of Scottish cuisine. It contains enough oil and fat it can be cooked without further assistance.
Great Video again, Thanks. If you have knee pain, and you go to a Doctor, the Doctor then sends you to a specialist, takes a look, sees arthritis and recommends surgery (if you go to a Butcher dont be shocked when you see a knife). Of course you have arthritis because of your age as do many people who have zero knee pain. If you go to a good Sports Physiotherapist or chiropractor, they will actually look at all the possible causes of knee pain. Weak lower back and glutes are a major cause of knee pain, (everything is attached) you are more likely to eliminate your knee pain through kettle bell swings to build up Glute and lower back strength (do what your physio tells you rather than me). A tight psoas muscle, hip flexors or a QL muscle can also cause problems, these are caused by too much sitting/driving causing muscle imbalances. Eliminate all NSAIDs, Aspirin Ibuprofen etc, they prevent healing, muscle growth, collagen and bone repair. Good luck with the knee and hopefully you can avoid surgery. I take Turmeric for my lower back and it really helps.

I must agree with your last point too as I have started taking tumeric extract and that has really helped (with knee and back too). Hi Rich - got a few issues with the knees - had torn meniscus years ago in right knee and when they operated they told me the ACL was partially torn, then about 5 years ago had surgery on the other one and the told me there was no cartilage left on the femoral condyle - something called OCD from my younger years!! Good to see you getting up a ' great wee hill!' Although some would say a tough wee hill. Small steps and the bigger hills shall follow once more. It's actually helpful to see how you follow through with your knee recovery etc as it's a problem that plagues alot of hill walkers.

Thanks for video. Been there once with bad weather. Myself having problem with knee. Going up is ok. But down bit hard. You can sit with your legs bent under you for few minutes it helps.
Great to see some improvement in the knee Murray. The indications are good for it going forward. Wonderful little mountain as well. And we call them square sausages down in Yorkshire. As always, take care and see you on the next one.

Beautifully shot as always. Good luck with the knee, I've had a dodgy one since I tore my kneecap off at 16 and destroyed all the ligaments. Just got to keep plodding on.

We were lucky enough to spend a week in Badagyle Cottage, just down the road, and of course I took the dogs for a wee walk to the (lesser) top. Looking at the amount of snow underfoot I’d guess we didn’t miss you by more than a few days (middle of feb)! I’ll keep an eye out for you on future outings! Hope to cross paths soon!

Re the sausages, I call it Lorne sausage too and I am originally from Angus. In Glasgow they call it square sausage though!

Great to see the knee is recovering, not great when the body starts failing but the brain is willing. We used to have those square sausage things here in South Australia, we called them steakettes. Used to spend all the money on showing horses and dogs so something had to give lol. Looking forward to next vid.

Stac Pollaidh is a beautifully shaped hill and I am glad you were able to achieve your goal. I have reached the stage were downhill does the knees for a few days. Not a lot I can do about it as I am not going to get younger. Hope that your injury and fitness are soon mended and you are back full throttle on your adventures.

I feel your pain Murray, injured knee, hip and ankle over last few weeks. So I’m now in recovery mode and hoping it’s not an operation. The “knees over toes guy” on you tube appears to be a go to for knee longevity and I started to incorporate this into my weekly strengthening exercises. Might be worth a look.
Flat, sliced, square or lorn sausage depending on what part of the world (Scotland) you are in. Great video again, Knee’s, I have had both of them replaced, one now is about 15 years old so getting a bit grinding now. So hill days are about every 6 weeks as it takes a while to recover. glad your getting back out i had a knee op last year was out of action for 3 mths but took my time getting out started small now im not far from 100% and loving it stay safe and keep the videos coming.

Glad the knee held up OK, Murray! I've had problems with mine of late, I picked up some wee patella supports from Amazon and they have certainly helped, especially on the way down. Now for the important bit, the sausages! Steak slice are a fancier, leaner version of Lorne sausage (aka square sausage). An excellent choice regardless of what you call them 😁

Good to see you back! Plus one on the stretching, as an ageing hiker myself, having torn a knee ligament footballing years ago, yoga has made a huge difference for flexibility and recovery (wish I’d discovered it 20 years ago). Originally from Fife so it’s lorne sausage for me too!
Looking good, bigger tops on their way any time! You should watch Dave Macleod's videos on active recovery of tendon and ligament injuries. He's a world class climber, but us mortals can learn a thing or two from his approach to health and age being no barrier to high performance levels. Not that we're ageing, just gaining experience...

We went to Cul Mhor and camped there last summer.it is stunning scenery.
Great to see you getting out,I was a good 12 weeks in knee recovery 3 years ago, and coming down was always more painful.Use kinseology tape if doing a Munro now, especially if not camping and having to trek down.
Collagen supplement in powder form has helped my knee tremendously, helps the cartilage.

Thanks Helen - been seeing a physio now and on the last appointment she told me she was going to also show me how to strap my knee up with the KS tape as I have never used it before (always just had an old neoprene knee support - so looking forward to trying out the tape :)

Mate I'm so happy for you, remember my comment on the video before? I really hope you don't have anymore setbacks, I'm still in the same boat as you, I'm 29 and have never had surgery though, I've been doing lots of squats and all that band stuff, training the weaker muscles around the knee. remember me saying I've moved south to Cornwall on the coastal path which believe it or not is challenging terrain, certain sections have an alpine feel with the switchback stuff. its usually 400ft ish up then back down again in such a short time, so I've got good access to knee testing hills! had a bit of a set back a few weeks ago, my good leg went a bit bad (IT band), just overdone things and I think it was down to my good side compensating, anyway the moral of that waffle, just bear that in mind, you are no doubt wiser than me but really be careful, watch your good side too, because of my good leg going bad, I've not been able to test my actual bad knee (I've had 2 MRIs, nhs inconclusive, private I found out I had mild IT friction syndrome and mild chondromalacia patellae). I love your optimism for the outdoors, I'm exactly the same but I've developed a real strong skill which many athletes don't have, patience. Im entered in the Eiger Ultra trail in 17 weeks and currently running 5 miles a week HA, all the best, Paul

I'm in no position to be giving advice, but I have found that taking collagen powder in my tea every day has really helped my knees, which got pretty cranky after years of gardening.

I feel your pain.
Agree last thing needed is surgery.
If the body can repair itself it will be stronger than any surgery.
The most injury free I have been was when incorporating a significant amount of strength training and stretching into my weekly routine.
Neglected that of late and surprise, surprise have suffered.
Slow and steady pays off, but hard to stick to when so much love of what you do.
Good luck with the recuperation, a season in the gym might not be to your taste, but may pay dividends in the long run.

Thanks Melanie - spoiler alert - I am now into week 3 of physio exercises after seeing a physio at start of March - got another appointment at weekend but been given lots of exercises to do - still to test the knee on a hill though!! more updates in the next few weeks videos :)

After breaking my leg close to the knee, (4 breaks in total!) a physio advised me, when walking up steep slopes, take the steepness out by walking up in a zig zag.
30 years on, i now strap my knee, 2 paracetomol and im managing!
I've used both the terms lorne sausage and square sausage. All I can say for sure is you can't get it down here in Englandshire....probably just as well because it's mostly fat....have you ever grilled lorne sausage....the layer yellow fat under the grill will put you off! Saying that, a morning roll, lorne sausage and a haggis slice...breakfast of champions! Anyway, yes, great video and glad the knee is functioning better....well, I think it is...I got distracted when you started talking about food! lol
surely the lorne sausage is one of my five a day Julian ???;)

There’s nowhere like Assynt. Hope you are on the mend Murray. I had real bother with the knee after the first lockdown and have found a bit of daily yoga a real tonic. Grateful for it because I had a hellish incident when the pain kicked in at the summit of Braeriach when I had to go back out to Linn of Dee! Macdui yesterday in sublime conditions and was thankfully pain-free. Hope you are the same now!

Again like my previous comments a brilliant video. This video resonates with my previous hikes as I also have experienced problems with my right knee. It's been within three months I've been sore on the descents from the local hills near to my hometown of Glasgow and some munros northwards. I'd be keen to hear and learn what you would suggest in terms of easing the aches and pain I'm getting. Naturally I've been using knee braces and Kinesiology tape however it would be good to hear your point of view. As always your channel inspires me and best of luck for the Spring and Summer season and I look forward to seeing the next adventure Murray. Cheers Marcus

Glad your knee lasted out, got a knee replacement and had a torn miniscus which was painful myself. Love Lorne sausage we don't get in Newcastle but used have sausagemeat and made patties, delicious

Superb Murray 👏 Also just to add to the sausage debate, I've personally always called it square sausage and so does anybody I know. My grandfather is a butcher to trade and has also always called it square sausage. I have a friend who calls it slice and absolutely detests anyone calling it square/lorne/flat. He actually gets deeply offended by it 🤣 I'd personally never heard anyone call it slice until my friend brought it up. I just think it's called something different depending on what part of Scotland you're from. I'm from North Lanarkshire myself.
I know it's kinda pointless to argue about it, but I find it funny to talk about it 🤣
Great vid as always. I also tweaked my knee walking Torres del Paine earlier this year. I've been resting it but also following Chase Mountains youtube channel and his knee strengthening routines are working, for me at least.
Walk backwards uphill for 10 minutes 6 days a week. It will probably fix your knee, if not it will help dramatically. Don't fall over though :)

It contains enough oil and fat it can be cooked without further assistance.

Great Video again, Thanks. If you have knee pain, and you go to a Doctor, the Doctor then sends you to a specialist, takes a look, sees arthritis and recommends surgery (if you go to a Butcher dont be shocked when you see a knife). Of course you have arthritis because of your age as do many people who have zero knee pain. If you go to a good Sports Physiotherapist or chiropractor, they will actually look at all the possible causes of knee pain. Weak lower back and glutes are a major cause of knee pain, (everything is attached) you are more likely to eliminate your knee pain through kettle bell swings to build up Glute and lower back strength (do what your physio tells you rather than me). A tight psoas muscle, hip flexors or a QL muscle can also cause problems, these are caused by too much sitting/driving causing muscle imbalances. Eliminate all NSAIDs, Aspirin Ibuprofen etc, they prevent healing, muscle growth, collagen and bone repair. Good luck with the knee and hopefully you can avoid surgery. I take Turmeric for my lower back and it really helps.

I must agree with your last point too as I have started taking tumeric extract and that has really helped (with knee and back too). I would also highly recommend Moringa if you haven't already taken that as that was a rather nice surprise in the same regards :)

Hi Rich - got a few issues with the knees - had torn meniscus years ago in right knee and when they operated they told me the ACL was partially torn, then about 5 years ago had surgery on the other one and the told me there was no cartilage left on the femoral condyle - something called OCD from my younger years!! However now seeing a physio so hoping the exercises work and I don't need any more surgery - fingers crossed :)
